It's happening...

VARIETY ARTICLE

For anyone who missed my previous blogs, me, Simon, Jessica and Nira are not involved in any way, shape or form.

And neither do we want to be.

That show was very personal to us.

It's about Simon and Jessica, not just some format or high concept.

It pains me to see it reduced to this...

"Single-cam half-hour revolves around a young man and woman who pose as a couple in order to rent a cheap apartment."

Feel free to vent. I haven't got the energy right now.

Remember, Fox brought us shows like The Swan, canceled Arrested Development and put on Dancing with the Stars, Cancelled Firefly FOR NO GOOD GOD DAMNED REASON! and Made Family Guy a commercial appeal. Peter? Doing Subway commercials? Who flubbed this?

No, McSpaced will not be viewed in this house hold!

Especially since they did not have the courtesy to ask Simon and Jessica and you for your creative input or to be part in it. And lord...Will & Grace? Ya know we are having a special on those box sets at work...$15...please don't let Spaced be reduced to that.

Rachael Yeah?

it's so hard to know if I want this show to cain badly, or be a marginal success.
either option seems like it would ruin the legacy.
it shouldn't be happening. why aren't Americans bothered about original comedy? what satisfaction can there be in basically ripping off the talent and creativity of others? it's not a 'homage', it's not a 'pastiche', it's just copying.

this Peter Johnson fellow has a lot to answer for.

Edgar, you hold them mate and I'll twat them. It's ridicul-arse. Truly. Is there nothing that can be done? No avenues to go down, no people to intimidate... I mean discuss this travesty with? A petition perhaps, a protest of some kind? No? Well, try and find some comfort in the fact that we - the fans - are outraged and are definatley on you, Simon and Jessica's side through all this. We love you guys so hard. I wish I could say something more meaningful really, or do something more proactive... if anyone can provide the finances, I'll happily get my fine Welsh arse down to whatever hollowed out volcano lair McG skulks around in and get medieval on his stinky behind. :)

Fucking Hell.

It'll suck. No one will watch it. And hopefully BBCA will play the original so people will be like, "Yo! The British version's WAY better." I've noticed they start playing Brit versions of shows on BBCA that they've ported over here (Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares, anyone?).

As a side note, Gordon Ramsey acts a hell of a lot more civil on the Brit version.

"THIS IS SHIT! THIS IS SO SHIT!"

I had seriously convinced myself that the writer's strike had scuttled the whole insanely bad idea... :(

Edgar, I know it's a very personal show for you guys. As a gigantic fan of the show, I can say that it's personal to us as well. This hurts...badly.

I've never seen a show quite like Spaced, and likely we never will again. It is so full of the sensibilities of myself and my peers, its almost scary.

Has anyone anything to say about Outnumbered? I've never caught it over here in the states.

It's a shame you can have such little say over the fate of your babies. I don't know whether it'll be any good or not - I've not seen the US version of The Office or any of their other recent attempts - but if you don't want it to happen, it shouldn't happen.

Can you imagine British albums being rerecorded by American bands for the US market?

This show can't be remade... It makes me sick... When it fails people won't want to give the original a chance... The original is a masterpiece. Comedy gold. Inject American comedy into it with censorship... Mother of God...

I think we need a short from Edgar about hunting down McG..rambo style

That one sentence pretty much sums up how much they've missed the point.

Spaced inspired me in so many ways. I really felt like it was a show that talked to its audience, shared their interests and most of all MEAN something. What really shone about it was the love poured into the scripts, acting and direction.

It would be a near miracle if the remake would even capture a hundredth of the magic that Spaced had.

So sorry that you've all been fucked over :(

Dude... I was watching the original "Spaced" and loving it. Too bad we Americans have to fuck everything up that we come into contact with...

Also, happy belated one-year anniversary of "Hot Fuzz". Jenn and I were watching it last night, and she'd never noticed your small cameo as the stockboy until I pointed it out to her. Also, the commentary track with Tarantino is just crazy fun. Thanks for a great three-disc edition!

That sentence sums up just how much of the point they're missing.

Spaced was a work of love. It engaged its audience, let them know they were in on the joke and amazingly for a 30 minute sitcom, had characters we could recognise as ourselves and our friends.

Sorry that you're being fucked over like this Edgar.

I'm not entirely surprised to see this show getting the greenlight, nor will I be surprised when it's cancelled. They've obviously underestimated the backlash they'll get from the army of loyal fans who support the original show. This will be 'Spaced' in name alone, and that's it. Edgar, please tell me they can't call the characters 'Tim Bisley' and 'Daisy Steiner' though. Surely Simon and Jessica own the character and personality rights?

Dreadful news, Mr. Wright. May all profiteering stooges be bear hugged to death by Brian Libby’s character from “Silent Rage”. I beg your pardon for having to address some of the more ignorant comments this blog post has attracted.

To all the embarrassments of the UK who carry on with the oft-subscribed anti-U.S sentiment while still managing to despise your fellow countrymen just because they’re from Newcastle or Wales or wherever else you don’t reside,

STOP carrying on circus antics a thousand years stale! You can form your own opinions. The same goes for all the Americans who lap up the popular trend of labeling all things domestic as second rate. You’re not perceived as “worldly”. You’re just another head in the herd. Intelligence has much less to do with trends and memorized facts than it has with broad, ever-evolving perception. Fuel that with endless observation and interaction and you’re in business!

So toss out those tired, thick rimmed glasses. Pour out that muddy, over-priced Latte. Run, don’t walk out of the internet café and keep up the pace all the way home, where you can snap your LP of Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits in half. Without looking on Wikipedia, can you actually name three of his albums anyways? I didn’t think so. Pick up a domestic beer (I recommend Anchor Steam or Michael Shea’s Lager) and toast to the abandoning of that sad role you picked up while window shopping for identity so long ago.

I have yet to comment on this blog, but my perception and my observations--leading to a fully-formed opinion--are that, not since All in the Family has there been a US re-tooling of a British show that has been any good. No kudos. You can watch crap TV if you want. There's plenty.

I can't believe it. I don't want to believe. FUCK it is going to be TERRIBLE!!

What is this Adam Barr shit?! Yeah, because when I think of Spaced I immediately say "this reminds me alot of Will & Grace." I don't think there could be two shows that are more different. The style the show is shot in, the type of humor and delivery, the themes and storylines, all are on completely different wavelengths.

Spaced America is a TERRIBLE IDEA!!!!

Being a huge fan of all of your work Edgar this truly angers me. I live in america and it shames me that these people who claim to have seen Spaced, and are fans, think they can americanize it. This is the worst idea ever. Spaced was perfect the way it was/is, and adding american actors instead of Simon and Jessica and taking away you Edgar will wreck this show. Spaced in my book was a show made by fans for the fans. You guys seemed so passionate about it and someone just had to come and take away all the glory you guys created. I will never watch McSpaced and i will kill anyone who does. lol jk of course. I appreciate Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and am looking forward to Ant-Man! Thanks for creating such masterpieces and sorry that us americans have to take them away from you.

Hopefully it'll just be like when McCoupling went down? They'll show two episodes, everyone will go "Hey, this sucks but the original was AWESOME." And then DVD sales will go up?

That's what I'm hoping for, man. Or else we'll pull some NWA shit (you know, your NWA, not Ice Cube's, although I bet either would work) and "disappear" some people involved.

Or, you know. Just keep hoping it goes away somehow.
