I have to say, as depressed as I am about the ongoing turmoil that is the American version of SPACED, I am most heartened by your echoing howls of rage on this page and others.

PROTEST VIDEO LINK!

I think my favourite and most succinct comment was on the Variety page itself.

Dear McG and friends, Please die in a fire. Everyone xxx"

Hey, they said it. Not me.

Anyhow, I woke from a troubled night of sleep and a terrible recurring dream of being burgled in broad daylight (no joke and no dream analyst required) to find my good friend Simon Pegg weighing in with his thoughts on the matter...

Here's the link to his statement...

PEGGSTER

And here's what he had to say...

"SIMON'S OFFICIAL STATEMENT REGARDING THE US SPACED

Thoughts on the subject of an American Spaced. Feel free to skip to the end.
Now that the pilot has been officially announced, I thought it might be a good idea to clarify my position on the subject. The whole affair seems to have inspired some spirited debate and some heartening displays of loyalty and love. All this for a show which is almost 10 years old, is all rather wonderful and a vindication of all the blood, sweat and tears (both of joy and pain) we shed in the show's creation. It was always our aim to create a comedy which spoke to its audience on such a personal level, it almost felt one on one. It would seem the fan reaction to the news that Fox has appropriated the format, confirms at least, that we succeeded.

As far as remaking TV shows for different territories is concerned, I don't have a problem. The Office remake being a perfect example. Yes, the original British version is a wonderful and compact piece of comedy writing and performance, but I think it's bit much to expect a large scale American television audience to fully relate to the minutiae of day-to-day business life in an obscure British suburb. I'm sure if you're reading this, you are the type of person who takes pleasure in the variety of entertainment you enjoy, relishing the differences between our various cultural touchstones but there is a massive audience out there, which perhaps isn't as culturally savvy (euphemistic phrase for 'geeky') as we are and need their signifiers to be a little more familiar. So, Slough is replaced by Scranton, and the office archetypes become a little more archetypal to an American audience. The spirit of the show remains intact. The performances are uniformly great and the show scores big ratings and wins EMMYs, whether we as comedy purists prefer the original or not. The success of the remake is born out by it's undoubted success and appeal.

My main problem with the notion of a Spaced remake is the sheer lack of respect that Granada/ Wonderland/Warner Bros have displayed in respectively selling out and appropriating our ideas without even letting us know. A decision I can only presume was made as a way of avoiding having to give us any money, whilst at the same time using mine and Edgar's name in their press release, in order to trade on the success of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, even professing, as Peter Johnson did, to being a big fan of the show and it's creators. A device made all the more heinous by the fact that the press release neglected to mention the show's co-creator and female voice, Jessica Hynes (nee Stevenson). The fact is, when we signed our contracts ten years ago, we had neither the experience or the kudos to demand any clauses securing any control over future reversioning. We signed away our rights to any input in the show's international future, because we just wanted to get the show made and these dark days of legal piracy seemed a far away concern. As a result, we have no rights. The show does not belong to us and, those that do own it have no obligation to include us in any future plans. You would perhaps hope though, out of basic professional respect and courtesy, we might have been consulted. It is this flagrant snub and effective vote of no confidence in the very people that created the show, that has caused such affront at our end. If they don't care about the integrity of the original, why call it Spaced? Why attempt to find some validation by including mine and Edgar's names in the press release as if we were involved? Why not just lift the premise? Two strangers, pretend to be a couple in order to secure residence of a flat/apartment. It's hardly Ibsen. Jess and I specifically jumped off from a very mainstream sitcom premise in order to unravel it so completely. Take it, have it, call it Perfect Strangers and hope Balkie doesn't sue. Just don't call it Spaced.

It's a shame, since the pilot is now a certainty, whether we like it or not, a simple phone call and a few reassurances might have helped to at least curtail the tide of indignation from fans and creators alike. I have, as of yet, heard nothing.

Simon Pegg"

I can't add much more than that, other than to say you can copy the look, the dialogue, the characters, the situations and the plots of the show, but you can't replicate heart.

Going to use the old chesnut - I'm not upset, I'm just disappointed.
Except that I am upset. And angry. And, quite frankly, fucked off.

Its probably little consolation, but I hope you (and the others know) that all of us lot are behind you guys 99%.

Perhaps whatever little attention McSpaced will receive can amplify the legacy of the original material, and bestow a resurgence of nostalgia that'll shower the Simon and crew with newly found riches in a justified sense of irony...

It's the principal of the thing.

I've not seen the original. Sorry, Edgar. I haven't had a chance to track it down.
But I won't watch the new one until or unless they rectify the situation and do right by you.

An American comedy-horror film...

There's no way that it wouldn't end up being part of the "Scary Movie" series, except it would probably hide under a title like "'Twan of the Dead," which I might actually be willing to see if R. Kelly narrates the whole thing through song.

I'm really not looking forward to the possibility (assuming MCSPACED actually takes off) of going to work and hearing co-workers hooting over last night's SPACED not having the slightest idea or even caring that they're talking about a pale imitation. But take heart, for every American version of THE OFFICE, there are many more American COUPLINGs. I have a feeling SPACED will be the latter.

Please share the extra kudos with Simon.

As an American it shames me that we have to beg, borrow and steal to get anything on TV or in the movies today. There are hardly any original ideas to be had and the really good ones are always underground. Several television shows in the past few years have been rip offs of British TV shows and most of them failed because why, it doesn't carry over to American audiences if you try and spin it as an American concept. That is why I love watching British TV as was mentioned "I'm sure if you're reading this, you are the type of person who takes pleasure in the variety of entertainment you enjoy, relishing the differences between our various cultural touchstones" I enjoy the differences and the comedy is just so hilariously clever, not like our many, many idiotic farcical comedies that we have on TV these days. And the fact that they didn't even have respect enough to at least speak to you about it and say "oh yeah by the way, we are doing an American version. What are your thoughts" or something to that effect. What is this world coming to? Amen Tim!!

This single line sums up everything about my feelings on McSpaced. Spaced is just a very special show, and unless McSpaced is able to get one iota of the spirit of Simon and Jess's creation, it really seems rather pointless.

Keep fighting the good fight Edgar.

I have unfortunately and much to my displeasure not yet seen your show because I am stuck here in Florida of all places and find myself completely out of the loop. However...I am a humongous fan of all of your other work (Including "Dead Right")and am eagerly awaiting the release of the DVD here in the states...and as a hopeful soon to be member of the film/television business, I find it completely offensive and disrespectful that somebody would steal your project in this fashion...even if contractually they have the right to, because although it may all just be a business...it is still a business made up of real live people who have real live feelings that should be acknowledged. If you'll pardon my analogy, this is your baby and nobody should feel comfortable making it do things it doesn't want to do.

All people involved with making McSpaced, or should i say shitting on the original Spaced, have made a really bad name for themselves now. And i would like to think anyone approached to play Tim & Daisy will be turning it down because lets face it why would you want to be involved/associated with one of the worsed remake ideas in tv history.

I'd love to hear what Jess has to say about all this. This is such a money driven thing, they've totally disregarded all moral justification (of which there is none).

Spaced really didn't seem like it was created for ratings or DVD sales. It felt like it was a show we all needed, a show which loved shows and films. Just like the following films that loved films. It was a show created with a great amount of passion and effort. "You can't replicate heart" - something that McG and his minions will never be able to create, because he and wonderland never make their own material. He might be able to drive a project, but an original production is the creator's baby. From that lengthy period in pre-production right up through production to post. Simon and Jess clearly loved their characters, it shows in both their action and in their dialogue. In production, Edgar pushed himself and made something historically NEVER done.

It still shocks me that to this day, with all the mention of your (our) upset, that they STILL haven't bothered to talk to any of you.

You can shove on as many writers as you like, Wonderland. You can put your best team to it. You can put blood sweat and tears into making this show. You can market the hell out of it. But it will never, ever, trample on the original and best, much loved revolutionary sitcom a couple of young actor/writers once decided to call SPACED.

Fans, I urge you to find out call times for the first pilot, strip naked and dangle your bits in front of the studio doors until they give up.

Neil.

What I don't like is the fact that Americans need to make remakes. You can tell that they are so fucking lazy and can't think of new material. Basically what they have done is seen that SPACED is so popular as a British comedy and it has so many supporters both in the UK and in USA and basically they want to make some easy money like they did with The Office. I can't believe that they put both Simon's and Edgar's names on it as if they had supported this. Surely both Edgar and Simon could sue them for that. If some motherfucking cock-sucking american company and a twat who thinks its cool to been known as McG (which isn't his real name otherwise his parents really must of hated him) even though his movies suck giant donkey dick decided to put my fucking name to promote a remake of one of the finest and most respected comedies in British history then they'd better run coz I might go all Matrix on your ass like Mike does (or at least thinks).

Maybe in that scene when Mike, Tim and Tyres walks into the building with all guns blazing was in fact the office of the company who want to remake it. Whatever happens I won't be watching it and I'm guessing that most of the Britsh and US fans will not either.

Simon spoke of "basic professional respect and courtesy"? I believe America has dropped those words completely from their vocabulary. I am very sorry this is happening. I don't want to see a remake of Spaced! I have already written a nasty little letter to Fox letting them know this time they have REALLY crossed the line. Most of my favorite TV shows are on Fox, and now I shall miss them all. I cannot support a network that just "steals" ideas that were "given birth" by someone else. You three put your heart and souls into Spaced and now Fox is just going to throw money into it, take it as it's own and pray for the cult following that YOU created? Bullshit! It's just fucking insane for them to think their version of Spaced is going to do anything over here. I really hope the pilot is a bust and that the American networks are taught a valuable lesson, LEAVE THE FUCKING BRITISH COMEDIES ALONE!

Are we really surprised by the fact that no one contacted any of you on this? Really? It's friggin' Hollywood. Based on the total fuck-over the suits gave the writers during the strike (just the attitude that they don't deserve any more was the worst of it ... well, maybe) I'm not surprised by this, or any other, total lack of acknowledgment to the creative force that created the thing they are now trying to line their pockets with. I won't be really pissed until the show makes it past whatever lame-ass pilot (i.e. - "Coupling") gets on the air and then they start completely stealing Edgar's directing style.

There are certain to be silver linings. As of yet the original Spaced is not available to our North American buddies, once it is, and our trans-atlantic cousins can expirience Daisy and Tim as they should be, a remake could very well become a moot point.

The comments about the American version of the Office are very interesting, I feel it is important to point out that one Ricky Gervais not only gave the show his blessing but is involved in it's development and execution. It is a very funny show because of that.

The Office appears to be the exception, has anybody seen the American pilot of Red Dwarf? Oh dear God...

Mr Wright! You could always just resort to pettiness, how about creating a show where a double decker bus breaks down in a rural English village, the occupants cannot get back to civilisation and everybody is being stalked by a large wiley Fox. You could call it 'Missing', or 'Not Found'. I think you get what I mean...

Speak, fat boy, speak!

Well said, Simon and thanks for posting the statement, Edgar.

As for those posting, just a friendly reminder...America is not remaking Spaced. An American douchebag director and production company purchased rights from a douchebag British production company in order to remake Spaced with no involvement from its creators. These douchebags do not represent America, so don't make this an "America-sucks-cuz-they-remake-and-ruin-Brit-TV-shows" arguement. It's counterproductive and a generalization. Are there a lot of remakes coming out of Hollywood? Yes. Have there been a lot of remakes of British TV shows in America? Yes. Mostly crappy reality/game shows (American Idol, Big Brother, etc.) with the occasional gem of The Office. There has been some creative TV coming out of Hollywood in recent years, too (The Sopranos, The Wire, Arrested Development, Lost, Friday Night Lights, Dexter, The Shield, I could go on...) In other words, let us focus our fury to the actual people involved with British-American unity.
(End of rant)

Don't let this remake happen. Don't. Don't. Don't.

Don't.
