Wow.

I write this from a Toronto hotel room, but any of you who were there at the New Beverly in LA last night know what a treat Joe Dante's THE MOVIE ORGY was.

Joe, in typically modest fashion, downplayed it at the start and warned us that it was dated.

But it was amazing, all 4 and a half hours of it. Almost like the You Tube of 1968, an amazing collage of TV ads, old shows, reels of B-movies and public service announcements. And brilliantly edited together to create endless callbacks.

The crowd were great and I've never seen Joe so pleased. The Orgy played as great as it did in the late sixties.

And what clips? Post war PSA's on women's problems or "The Curse", highly disturbing musical cat and mouse abuse from Andy's Gang, TV shows cut down to their most succinct points; not to mention insane Colgate, Nabisco and aspirin commercials.

I was in good geek company with the front row comprising QT, Bill Hader, Moriarty from Ain't It Cool News, Andre Dellamorte from CHUD, my good friend Michael Bacall and the lovely Julia from the New Bev. And we all lapped it up.

Truth be told, I briefly snuck out to get coffee and chocolate, but this took 5 minutes of a 270 minute running time!

Check out this great article in Variety on the show last night...

Also Moriarty's take on the night...

AINT IT COOL ARTICLE

And Andre from CHUD's take...

I'm glad I was there. Such programs don't come round to often.

Thanks to Mister Dante for an awesome season.

P.S. I'm a SPEED CRAZY fan forever now.

It sounds really amazing. I'm pretty bummed that I had to miss it, but what with finals week and living in Boston, it would have been pretty hard to swing.

Silly Jo! Trix are for Dick In A Box!

You're already in Toronto?!?! When you were in LA last night?!?! Good gracious, Edgar, do you ever stop travelling? (You do realize that your constant travelling, and the fact that you don't seem to mind, means that if you're not in San Diego for Comic Con this summer...you're in trouble. Right? Hehe :-P )

Anywho...that sounds fabulously awesome. I hope I'll get to see it some day, although I rather assume it'll be difficult since it's probably not on DVD, eh?

Much love!

I, too, felt overwhelmingly lucky to be at the New Bev last night. Hard as it may be to believe, I was left wanting more when the ORGY reached its four-and-a-half hour conclusion. I'm longing for the seven-hour version Mr. Dante said once was making the rounds.

SPEED CRAZY forever!

Man, I wish Orgy could get a DVD release, but the rights/clearances would never allow that...But thanks for the links, etc.

Ugh, I had to stay home and nurse a sick kid and wife.

Maybe I'll catch it in another 40 years.

It really was so amazing. My husband and I keep shouting "Don't crowd me" and whining that we're too "sensitive" and need Bufferin. Truly transcendent filmgoing experience, a real, surprising work of art. Joe Dante was so cute about it, I fell a little in love. :) Nice to see someone writing about that night. I keep meaning to but don't quite know what to say.

Toronto? Dammit, man, why do you always go to the wrong side of the bloody country? You should come out west sometime. We're not all hicks and twats. Most are. But there's a whole crapload of people who would giggle like school girls and do a happy little dance if you came out to visit us. Besides, Calgary doesn't smell, at least not as bad as TO. I spent three days there when I saw Evil Dead the Musical, and I have never smelled anything like it. Pretty though.
P.S. Come to Calgary. We love you!

You know between Dre, Feraci, and you, not to mention Brian from Horror-Movie-A -Day, I feel like I've been to the New Bev. Except I haven't. I live in fucking Oklahoma. You drove through here (quickly I hope) and I'm sure you noticed there is nothing to compare, in terms of movie orgies. I'm so envious.

It sounds great, sounds like you had a wonderful time and I bet those old advertisemet were a hilarious sight to behold. Oh the days of yore when they believed lead in the paint was a good thing and that red dye number 5 was just fine...lol

if you haven't seen it already,"The Atomic Cafe" is a great film to check out. it is a documentary on the cold war that was pieced together from newsreels, training films and public service announcements of the 50s and 60s with no additional narration. very cool, slightly disturbing.
