Okay my Top 29 is already a-changing as I just saw TIMECRIMES and it was just great.

Along with REC and LET THE RIGHT ONE, it's been a good year for international genre.

So, my top films is subject to change as I'm going to try and see a lot more before Jan 1st 2009.

Oh, and me putting THE DARK KNIGHT at Number 8 does not constitute a backlash. I loved it.

Oh and lower films are subject to change if I see them again too. Certainly planning on seeing BENJAMIN BUTTON, SLUMDOG and perhaps MILK again.

Oh and WALL:E.

I highly agree with the recent wave of great foreign horror. Inside, Frontier(s), and Them were a few of my favorites from the past year.

I've only seen about 10 movies from 2008... and am glad they all figure in your top 30! Nothing wrong to say about your picks. Your RIKI-OH award to Rambo shutted down my own arguments...

I like your Current Listening Edgar. I think I'd put that song in my Top 30 for the year if I did one.

And yeah The Dark Knight was a great film, but I liked Iron Man better.
And I think I liked "Burn After Reading" better than both of them to be honest.

My friend tricked me into seeing REC. While I screamed like a baby throughout the last half of it, it was totally worth it. And all these lists you keep posting is going to keep me entertained throughout the holidays so keep posting them Edward!

Dear Edger,
you are the coolest famous person ever for maintaining a regularly updated blog. I havent been on myspace for sometime now but you have pulled me back in once more.

Nice movie choices, I'm really looking forward to LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, especially now that you crowned it number one, must be good. As other people were saying I really liked IN BRUGES, but seeing it from an American standpoint must be a lot different than a European.

Again Edger, I'm a massive fan of yours and all film, and your blog kicks ass

I've seen LET THE RIGHT ONE IN twice already and it was even better on the second viewing. They shouldn't even bother with Matt Reeves's American remake because this film was just too beautiful to be retooled.

I actually had a brush with fame when I met Danny Boyle a couple weeks back, he was in Birmingham, Michigan for a screening of Slumdog Millionaire, with a post Q&A. Apparently he approached Jack White about doing the score(or contributing to it in some shape or form), but Jack's schedule was full with the Raconteurs(one of my favorite records of '08).

I was like a giddy school boy because I gushed about how the Trainspotting soundtrack had a tremendous impact on my life(I was only 15 when it came out). As far as I'm concerned, it's one of the greatest soundtracks ever.

I was very pleasantly surprised to see Let The Right One In at your number 1, as I genuinely believe it's the best Swedish film for at least the past three of four decades. Now, if only it could get a proper UK cinema release so I can see it on the big screen, then that would just be perfect.

If you haven't yet read the book, I urge you to pry it into your busy movie-watching/movie-making schedule.

This was the list I was waiting for. I’m coming in a little late on this blog but let me say I’m glad to see The Ruins on some one else’s list other then my own. I felt like a lot of people missed out on that one. I swear I seen REC in 2007 somewhere but maybe it was 2008. Any way Have you had a chance to see Tôkyô zankoku keisatsu (Tokyo gore police)?

The movie that I cannot get out of my head, and as such is probably the best film I saw this year, is Tarsem's THE FALL. I'm curious what you thought of it.

I haven't finished my Top 13, but I think it will be full of all manner of small stuff that eluded most folks - JCVD, TELL NO ONE, TRANSSIBERIAN, SNOW ANGELS, MY WINNIPEG, FROZEN RIVER. Did you make it to any of those?

Excellent news. After watching it, I went wild and bought three Van Damme DVDs the next day - IN HELL, WAKE OF DEATH, and UNTIL DEATH. I watched WAKE OF DEATH - a little overdirected by Phillippe Martinez, but a good solid performance there too. He seems to be one of those few actors who has spent his time in straight-to-video Hell becoming a better actor.

After just finishing it an hour ago, I just have to say something about Speed Racer.

You absolutely have to see Speed racer. Preferably in high definition. There are things in that film that have just flat out never been done before. Phenomenal. Just crazy. Don't let anything stop you, because whatever you heard is NOT the film you expect to see. The direction is just off the wall bonkers "how did they DO that?!" stuff. Don't miss this.

im getting ready to change my(non-exisent, only in my mind really) top films for 08

to put twiglight at the bottom.

ive seen a few scenes allready

1)casting is a biiiig nono
2)special effects/stunts-i have seen better from even smaller production companies
3)the acting.(linked to casting ofcourse)
4)the soundtrack(just robert pattinsons voice jsut ruins it(vampires arent smug bastards))
5)it could never do the book justice.

i may just write a list now, just so i can show how dissapointed i am(havent even seen it yet)

I'm so happy you chose LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. Stunning film. And the best film with a Morrissey lyric as the title EVER.

Actually it was a pretty damn good year for horror - The Mist, Cloverfield, [REC], Black Water, Rogue, Diary Of The Dead, W Delta Z, The Cottage, Midnight Meat Train, AvP2 (guilty pleasure) and Frontiere(s)

Plus Doomsday which was a big ball of fanboy fun if you were brought up during the home video boom.

I can strongly recommend À l'intérieur - Beatrice Dalle playing a psycho terrorizing Vanessa Paradis sister! Very stylish, very suspensful, and gore above and beyond the call of duty.

À l'intérieur, that was great until near the end; it went a bit too far. Albeit this may be my pick for best horror I've seen (very few) this year. I'm slightly surprised nobody brings up Saw V on this blog! Is it any good? I doubt it.

I didn't have a problem with your placement of The Dark Knight. There's hardly a chance that anybody could think it less than great, and that's really all you need. You know it didn't even make TIME magazine's list? I don't get it.

In honor of this list I think I'll venture down to the Mann's 6 today to see "Punisher: War Zone". If it's anything close to the bats**t insane "Rambo" it'll be worth the price of admission.

The audience of 20+ cheered (& laughed) at the scene you mention. The other was the kitchen scene when Frank removes a gangster's face with the assistance of a shotgun. "Punisher: War Zone" is deranged and needs to be on a double feature at the New Beverly w/"Rambo" sooner rather than later.

I've been wanting to see SLUMDOG again, too. I think it definitely requires a second viewing - just because there's so much to look at. Danny Boyle is too awesome. He's films are pretty eclectic. Yeah, I'm pretty stoked that he got a Golden Globe nomination. Keeping my fingers crossed for him until the Academy announces their list.

Oh, and I think you put THE DARK KNIGHT in the perfect spot. No complaints here. I'm just wondering how in the hell you managed to whittle everything you saw this year down to only 29 films.

Edgar, did you see THE MOTHER OF TEARS? I still need to see it and was wondering what you thought of it. It came out in 2007 but not in the US..I think it came out in June of this year. I can't wait for 2010 and 2011..THE WORLD'S END and THE HOBBIT. I hope IMDB is right about the release dates.

Gotta admit I have been Big-Screen shy this year - so many promising movies went direct to DVD *COUGH*DAY OF THE DEAD*COUGH*PURE SHIT*COUGH* and you can see why - but zombie films are on the rapid decline again (Just see Return of the Living Dead 4 & 5 for a no brainer - no pun either). REC was great, I kinda liked Hancock aswell... but anyhoo!

Oh... and Wall-E is up on mine... as is Kung Fu Panda! LOL!

You have to see The Fall, there is nothing else this year like it. it is on DVD now and it is quite beautiful. The Boy in the striped Pajamas is really good too. I also loved In Bruges, good to see Dark Knight not being number 1 even though I liked it alot I do feel it has been a bit overrated.

Hurrah for [REC]. Scariest horror film in a loooong time, and the end was not only a nice little subversion of the genre but was one of the most intense cinematic experiences I've ever had. Kinda lame they had to remake it as Quarantine though.

Slumdog Millionaire looks phenomenal. Danny Boyle showed a clip of the opening chase scene at a film festival in Cardiff last month and it was amazing.

I watched THE DARK KNIGHT last night FINALLY! It was badass BUT I just couldn't get past Batman's voice..it ruined moments for me.. it was borderline funny. I wanted to love the movie but just couldn't because of the exaggerated gruffy voice. Heath was AMAZING ...sucks hes gone :(. I also saw RUN FAT BOY RUN the other night.. it had it's moments.

I'm going to check out REC, sounds great! I'm loving the foreign horror.
