BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE…

What makes a woman beautiful? The old adage- "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" has been around forever. In an age of botox, plastic surgery, and if you can't naturally be it- buy it, the definition of beauty for the average woman has become more blurred than ever. The unrealistic Hollywood portrayal of beauty has been somewhat of an unattainable standard for decades. The difference today is the easily accessible alternative to "au-natural" has become as common as a lower back tattoo on a 25 year old woman. No longer for just the wealthy or even considered taboo among soccer moms of America, a little nip/tuck is viewed by many as "maintenance". In a different world where children really follow the "do as I say, not as I do" direction from their parents all of this should be fine behavior. The problem is that we don't live in that world. Children and young adults- girls especially rely on their role models to show them the way. What we teach our young girls is that inner beauty is more important, but we all know that young people immolate what they see. The dilemma is that now it's not just the actress on the cover of People that have had breast implants and a tummy tuck. Now, girls have to come to terms with why their mothers are doing the same.

I often wonder what women 50 years ago would have thought about all of our "beauty technology". I can't imagine they would have been too impressed, for that all we have gained, we have lost much more. Hollywood has changed too. I still am enamored by Elizabeth Montgomery. I can watch Bewitched reruns all day. Everyone has that woman from a time long gone that impressed them in the same way. It's rare to find modern Hollywood starlets today that hold the class, poise, grace, and most importantly self respect that was had in the past. I am old enough and confident enough in myself to know that I don't want to change a thing. I guess I am bothered because I was 13 once, and I wasn't so sure of myself then. Although, I don't have any children, I do have a very sweet girl on my mind every time I hear about teens getting plastic surgery or hearing them talk about how they can't wait until they are old enough to fulfill their quest for perfection. I hope she never feels like she's not beautiful or that she has to go under the knife just to keep up with the other girls. I can't help thinking that we as a generation are paying far too much attention to the shallow people that really don't have anything to offer inside or out. I think its time to take a big step back in 2008. Another old saying- less is more. That doesn't mean clothing- Britney.
