One of the Portland Mercury's writers today did a little blurb about the Slants:

Ezra Ace Caraeff writes "We get it. The Slants are Asian. The Portland sextet has a boastful bio which constantly mentions it, all of their press seems to hinge solely on that fact, and the band plays up every possible stereotype by booking slots at anime expos and holding a contest for an adorable pink Hello Kitty guitar. Much like a white rapper with confidence issues, the Slants' constant reminders of their ethnicity seem forced, if not a little desperate. Much like any white kid can rock the mic with the best of them, the concept of a few Asian kids playing keyboard rock isn't exactly mind-blowing, nor does the experience lead to, as their bio puts it, "melting people's faces off with 'Chinatown Dance Rock.'" Instead, the Slants offer another take on the sterile dance rock made popular by Depeche Mode, the Faint, and countless others who clutter the stage with an abundance of keyboards and black clothing. While Slanted Eyes, Slanted Hearts (OMG! Slanted eyes, because, you know, they are totally Asian!) was released last September, tonight is another CD release, this time celebrating national distribution for the album. EAC"

It seems that he doesn't do his homework (most of our press, such as getting "album of the year", hinges on the great music) and perhaps it is he who has the confidence issues. Perhaps he doesn't listen to any music at all: we aren't the only ones that represent our ethnic heritage or have tounge-in-cheek band name/album title. How about NWA, or even more recently, Jay Z's "Black Album" (or even The Beatles' "White" album set, haha).  Furthermore, no one seems to have probelms with Puerto Rican rapper Fat Joe who always talks about his Puerto Rico-styled beats and pride - yet because we decide to try and bring a new style of music to the Asian entertainment scene, he has issues?

Besides, his biggest issue is that much of our press has to do with our ethnicity - yet that's the focus of his own review, The Slants' Asian-ness. Perhaps he didn't even bother listening to the record, which really has one direct song about Asian social issues. If playing an anime convention is so over-the-top, wouldn't the same apply for Irish folk music being played at Kelly's Irish pub every weekend? Or all-gril bands playing at rock camp for girls? Get a life.

Anyway, if you've got issues with his comments, then you can send some love to the editor at: mercuryeditorial@portlandmercury.com

Our manager joked about hiring the Triad or Yakuza to take a hit out on Ezra, but I think the best revenge is just living well and succeeding.

Wow... What an ignorant som'bish.. That's really just too bad that this git can't understand there's nothing wrong with being proud of your ethnicity and heritage. And it isn't like ONLY Asian people listen to your music anyway. A large and still growing population of white people are listening to straight up Harajuku rock and roll, learning the Japanese language and studying the whole Asian Culture. Go ahead and keep your tounge in cheek references! I think it's adorable, and so do all the fans. And uh... I know a few guys in Seattle if uh... this Ezra cat still needs a little lesson brought over to him via 'Hoi-mono' tattoo having original gangsta's. >=D Though it make cost you one kidney.. Perferably AB-, if you have one layin' around to spare. >;P Hey if not we could always just take one of his. ^_^

There's a good chance of it; almost all of our "anti-Asian" reviews have been from non-Asians...

Ouch. I actually know this dude - he used to date a friend of mine. I have no idea what the hell his problem is. It's ok for a band to have some branding and an image in addition to good music, isn't it?? Also, I think it's cool to have a band in town that's about being Asian and hell I'd want a Hello Kitty guitar. I think that you guys do is hella cool and very clever. Your music is good and you have a cool image. Part of that image is being Asian because a lot of you are...Asian. Wow, maybe you guys should go up on stage with "white face" just to downplay your Asian-ness and stop shoving it down everyone's throats, eh? There's an idea.
By the way, I saw Jen Cho at a show over the summer and almost ran up to her and said "Oh my god, I totally know you from the Slants" but then I thought maybe that would seem stalker-ish and weird. But I wanted to. You guys have fans!

hehe i'd be very flattered to be accosted stalker-<myspace>style</myspace>! ^__^b i, for one, feel supremely blessed that our supporters are intelligent, articulate, beautiful people who just "get it" when it comes to what we're doing. if mr. caraeff had half the love we receive, maybe he'd be less inclined to spit his poorly-aimed venom in the faces of portland's musicians, as he so frequently does.

Kathy, you rock.

Maybe Ezra doesn't understand that were called The Slants because we walk crooked, not 'cause we're Asian. And "Slanted Eyes" is a metaphor for they way you see when one drinks too much.

But yeah, branding is part of the deal. Lots of bands/artists do it - even The Portland Mercury does it as kind of a leftist/hipster/social issue but still cool kind of weekly zine.

(oh and feel free to say hi anytime!)

Argh, that article irritated me so much I found myself thinking about it most of the afternoon. (Probably the writer's intention!) I get so irritated when artists of any kind are criticized for being proud of/celebrating their ethnicity. It's like, it's ok that you're Asian/Native American/Black, etc. but don't talk about it, don't make a big deal out of it. It's fine if the reviewer had a problem with the music - everyone's entitled to their own opinion - but if that's the case, the article should have focused on THAT. If the Slants want to celebrate or criticize the Asian/Asian American experience, whether by singing about serious social issues or giving a tongue-in-cheek name to their album, more power to them! An in MY opinion, the music of the Slants is AWESOME, so there!
