Why Bob Johnson is an Asshole & a Hypocrite
by Davey D

Former BET President and founder Bob Johnson is an asshole and hypocrite. Lemme not pull punches, be politically correct, beat around the bushes or try to impress high brow readers who feel I should be less crass and gentler with my words so I can appeal to their sensibilities. It's 2008 and unfortunately being nice and proper doesn't quite get the message across, especially when it comes to Bob Johnson and his recent disparaging remarks about presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, I'm referring to Johnson getting on stage to introduce Senator Hillary Clinton at a rally and expressing outrage about Obama's past. He said; "Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood. I won't say what he was doing, but he said it in his book."

It was a cheap shot referencing Obama's drug use when he was a young man. This was an activity that Obama freely admitted to in his memoirs 'Dreams from My Father' and on some level I can see it being fair game, but coming from a guy like Johnson, that's like former President Bill Clinton giving marital advice to Hallie Berry's former husband admitted sex addict Eric Bonet. I heard Johnson make these remarks and I was like 'Negroe go back into your cave, please sit down and leave the politics to someone else'.

I keep asking myself, where does Johnson get off slamming Obama about the wrongs of drug use when he piloted one of the largest media institutions [BET] that provided a worldwide platform that for the most part glorified and legitimized the lifestyles of those who not only used drugs but also sold them. In all the years we've known of 'billionaire Bob Johnson we have not seen him get on any stage and diss former drug dealers like Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Rick Ross or any number of artists whose videos he would routinely play coupled with sit down interviews conducted by fawning hosts who never ever challenged these artists for resurrecting a 'criminal' lifestyle in both their songs and videos they supposedly left behind.

The Bob Johnson we know, has never gone out of his way to publicly smash on artists who like Mary J Blige or Fergie who admitted to using drugs in the past and have since gotten their lives together and moved onward and upward. If anything, the former head of BET could be seen publicly praising them while courting them to appear at his award shows or Spring Bling concerts.

Johnson certainly never came out swinging on admitted drug abusing artists like Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown, Flava Flav or DMX who all had reality shows either on BET or the one of the other stations within the Viacom network where he had influence as a VP.

One would think a guy of Johnson's new found 'high moral character' would've been smashing on drug use and drug peddling a long time ago. Could you imagine what sort of shockwaves would've been sent around the world if Johnson even as a retired media mogul had spoke out and said;  'No Bobby! No Whitney! We won't give them a reality show until those two get themselves healed and free of drugs'? Can you imagine if he insisted the DMX show 'Soul of a Man' was centered around him getting over cocaine addiction?

Imagine the shockwaves if Johnson said; "Hell no Jigga we ain't supporting your album 'American Gangster' cause you highlighting the sordid lifestyle of heroin dealers like Frank Lucas and we are against that type of behavior? Could you imagine if Johnson found his nuts when at the helm of BET and shut down any and all videos from artists who had 'dirty pasts' that they were trying to exploit?

Sadly the Bob Johnson we know, has seemingly had no problem in making billions from highlighting the drug dealing, drug using lifestyle. Adding to this disappointment is the fact that this proud African American billionaire did things like remove programming that would make us question and shun such questionable behavior. It was on Johnson's watch that BET got rid of great award winning shows like Teen Summit. It was on Johnson's watch that we saw incredible commentators like Tavis Smiley and Ed Gordon disappear. It was on Johnson's watch we saw the BET nightly news shrink and then became a non existent. These shows were shut down in spite the objections ranging from scholars like Dr. Cornel West to the 8 major Black fraternities and sororities to more recently church groups leading the Enough is Enough campaign. It was on Johnson's watch that many in the community were up in arms protesting BET when they had that Step-N-Fetcher like cartoon called Cita's World. Y'all remember that one right?

As I'm penning this article, I'm vividly recalling Johnson arrogantly responding to critics on a widely televised 'townhall' where he was confronted for firing Tavis Smiley, Johnson said that BET stands for 'Black Entertainment' and he is in the business to entertain the masses and that he was not obligated to provide news programming. Who knows, maybe Johnson was trying to be 'entertaining' when he made is divisive remarks about Obama.

How is it that Johnson found the courage to stand up against Obama but was mealy mouthed against the artists with questionable pasts that he highlighted on his network who in turn became the face and MIS-perception of all African Americans to the rest of the world? Many of us who are not celebrities and have traveled overseas know the pain we've endured of having to explain to fascinated yet misguided individuals in far off lands that we are nothing like the characters and depicted in the videos shown on BET? I know I've had my share of conversations where I had to put things in proper context in places ranging from Barcelona to Scotland to Beirut where BET specifically was cited as the referencing point.

Instead, of being a champion for our people who could use his resources and influence to change widely held, worldwide misperceptions and stereotypes of us, he opted to become something more foul then any drug dealer. He became a propagandist of the worse kind. Instead of hustlin' crack, Johnson hustled Black pathologies, distorted images and misinformation under the banner of Black culture which has resulted in many believing we are part and parcel to the unchallenged buffoonery he allowed highlighted. Instead of celebrating Obama for overcoming the odds including the scorch of drugs to possibly become the next president of the United States, this 'negroe' Bob Johnson wants to act like a lap dog for Hillary Clinton and bash on him all while being a media drug peddler of sorts who is in a big way responsible for normalizing drug culture.

And please don't get me wrong, I am in no way saying Obama is not above criticism. I have lots of critiques that I can launch at him. For the record, I am not the biggest Obama fan. He gives great speeches and has lots of charisma There's no deny the energy he brings to mainstream political discussion, but from where I sit his politics don't go quite go far enough. I want Obama to be the type of politician to have been on the ground front and center leading the masses when we went to protest in Jena. Instead all I got was a prèss release.

I want Obama to have been the politician who is bold and assertive and uncompromising to the point that he would speak out on behalf of the SF8 or the Puerto Rican activists who are being jammed up by the Feds. I want Obama to be the type of guy who is smashing hard on police brutality and this current wave of gentrification. But when I argue with my fellow colleagues like writers Adisa Banjoko or Eric K Arnold, our spirited debates center around Obama's position on issues.

Even the big debate between rap stars Rhymefest (Obama supporter) and Lupe Fiasco (Hillary supporter) has centered around the politics of the candidates. Nobody is brow beating Obama for having used drugs in the past. The Obama we know and see today is clean, smart and razor sharp and we don't see him coddling and being a big enabler to drug culture the way that billionaire Bob Johnson has been over all those years. He made his billions by pimping drug culture on his network to the fullest.

The biggest challenge that all of us as African Americans have is because Johnson had made some significant economic accomplishments he led many into believing what he was doing as the head of a multi-billion dollar conglomerate like BET was building upon past freedom struggles waged by the likes of Dr Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, the Black Panthers and others.

The sad irony to all this is that if King and X were still alive waging battles against oppression, they would probably be excluded from the day to day banter of BET. We barely see or hear about these past leaders on the station today. What was the last in-depth discussion you saw or heard on BET under Johnson's reign about King beyond I have a Dream speech? What's the last insightful story you saw on Malcolm X?

If you listened to Dr. King's thoughts on media then you know one thing, that BET and the foolishness its put out in the name of our people would've been in stark opposition to where King stood in terms of using media as a tool to uplift and inform the community. Like I said Martin and Malcolm would never be on BET aside from a few documentary clips and sound bites if they were around today. If you don't believe me and think this is far fetched lets take a short trip down memory lane.

Those of us who a re old enough to recall, when BET first came out it held a lot of promise and became a source of pride. It promised to fill the void and become a much needed answer to MTV which started out refusing to air videos from Black artists. Eventually Michael Jackson, Run DMC and later Yo MTV Raps knocked down some of those doors, but BET started off promising to be our uncompromised mouthpiece.

I recall in the late 80s as the cable industry expanded, BET was not included on many of the cable systems and there were spirited campaigns to get them on. It was young 20 something year old activists who were then part of what I would call the Public Enemy/ Afrocentric generation that took to heart some of the promises made by Bob Johnson who at that time called upon people to stand up for BET and demand it be included as a cable channel. BET's exclusion from local cable systems was seen as yet another example of how prevalent racism was in this country. Many of us were coming out of the tailspin of the crack era and as Hip Hop's Golden Age kicked in many eagerly sought to fight the power. Getting BET on cable was one such fight.

Here in the Bay Area it was rap activists like artist Chill E.B. who worked tirelessly, organizing letter writing campaigns and call ins to get BET on cable systems outside of Oakland in neighboring cities like Concord, Fremont and other areas it was absent. I recall doing radio shows and even having someone from BET (it may have even been Johnson himself, I have to check my tape archives) come on the air to talk about the importance of all of us pulling together to help insure that BET got a fair shot. I recall giving out phone numbers to the offending cable outlets and encouraging listeners to stand up for BET. Years later many of the activists who spearheaded the fight to get BET on for the masses can't get on BET themselves to share and inform viewers of on going struggles in our community. For example, I know Chill EB who is a war vet and has spoken out against the war and has even done songs and videos about the topic never has been invited to sit on the 106 & Park couch.

It's ironic that Obama who at 40 something would've been part of that Public Enemy/ Afrocentric generation that initially rallied for causes like getting BET on cable systems now finds himself being criticized by a guy like Bob Johnson. How quickly they turn. But I guess we shouldn't be surprised shiesty people rarely change their stripes. My boy and fellow writer, Jelani Cobb raised an important question in his recent article on this topic for the Washington Post which was What were the Clinton's thinking when they got Johnson to stomp for them. She might as well gotten Rupert Murdoch or Bill O'Reilly to stomp for her. That's like me running for office and getting a gestapo like guy like Rudy Giuliani to stomp on my behalf-its not a good look and brings into question Senator Clinton's clear lapse in judgement. All she had to do was look at the number of protests launched against BET in the past few years for their degrading images of women. That should've been a clear enough message. In other words if Hillary thinks so little of Black people that she went and dug up a cat likes Bob Johnson then I'm gonna have to close the book on her and bounce the other way and roll with Obama.

Davey,

You sound kinda passionate there Bro... Lol

I gotta admit when I saw Bob Johnson on TV talking crazy my jaw hit the floor. Here is a man who never wanted to involve him self with being responsible for black issues speaking to a bunch of people about how the Clintons handle them? Wow

And its not even about the Clintons, Its just about the fact that Bob Johnson has once again proven himself to be a money-whore trying to pimp black people into believing that he really gives a damn about them. All he cares about is his own financial future. Thass a "Billion Dollar BET" for tha ass tho. Its sad.

I been telling yall for years, I even said it on my track "Tha Coon Song" Bob Johnson needs his cap peeled BACK!!! Bob Johnson lost his soul years ago and became the devil incarnate in blackface. Pray for him.

Man, First tha Cowboys lose to tha Giants and now this.

Easy, Davey, easy... Yes, it was childish and backhanded, but I wouldn't say it's hypocritical. We're talking about the President, not media and entertainment.

Entertainers are involved in drugs - that's a fairly acceptable truth. If Obama wins, he will be the first President of the United States to claim he was headed in the direction of being a junky.

I don't have a problem with Mary J (my very first CD was a Mary J CD) or Jigga. I've inhaled. That doesn't mean I'm cool with the President being a former weed-head or coke-head. (I am cool with it to an extent, but that's not the point...)

The REAL problem we should be having with the media moguls and our presidential candidates is that not one of them is talking about the economy that is falling apart right in front of our faces. By the time November rolls around, we are going to be in A LOT of pain, and it's going to last, at least, another year or two after that. If the government doesn't get it's act together financially AND limit how much the corporations can make dollars our of thin air, we will get a whole bunch of those jobs that we lost back... like making Nikes and Levis... think about it.

Peace.

Fugg datt. The president we have right now was definatly a Junky and alcoholic. At least Obama was man enough to admit it. AND, I want u to name one person that hasnt had on dosage of drugs. And I aint just talkin Illegal. Just because its legal doesnt make it ok. Coffee, Alcohol, Nicotine, and the list goes on are just as bad. Ur a better man for being able to admit it and overcome it and still be able to tell your story. No man is perfect. If he tell you he is, hes a lie.

Thank you for pointing this out. The REAL problem is that the Media isn't talking about ANY issues. wouldn't it be nice to see a democrat take issue with a republican for once? how about if someone asks the candidates to explain how their planning to pay for all this health care reform they propose? It would be nice to see one of the big papers run a side by side comparison of the voting records of the senators who are running, complete with an explanation of the bills they were voting on instead of just the convoluted name of the bill.
or how about a side by side comparison of the platforms they are running on. I have yet to see a comparison of Obama, Edward's and Clinton's tax reform plans, or their health care plans, or their foreign policy, or their domestic initiatives. They are all talking about having these things, but I guess its up to us to create that sort of comparative resource ourselves.

In response to your point about Obama potentially being the first president with an admitted former drug problem, if I recall correctly, President George W. Bush has admitted to having a former drinking problem and word on the street is that he had a cocaine problem when he was younger, too. He says he's clean now...but whatever. And I doubt anybody really believes that President Clinton didn't inhale. (Dude's probably high right now. j/k)

And that's just from the past two presidencies. In fact, Obama smoking weed is one of the tamest misbehavings compared to that of the personal lives of our past presidents. Besides the past two presidents, if you wanna go back in the day there are many other shining examples of depraved behavior and debauchery. A good example of which would be President Andrew Jackson who had a HELLA shady past. Homeboy used to have a major drinking and gambling problem. He even stole some other dude's wife. (The first divorce on record in the state of Kentucky was caused by the homewrecking of Pres. Andrew Jackson.) This is not to mention how he murdered some other cat in an old-fashioned duel....and that's just one president.

There are others, of course, like Thomas Jefferson raping slaves, President Hoover cross-dressing, etc. etc...the hits go on and on.

...but I agree with you about the economy, though. Folks, hold on to the jobs you have and be on your best behavior. It's rough out there for the unemployed.

Indeed.

There is well-documented evidence that the following presidents openly used cocaine during their presidency:
-William McKinley
-U.S. Grant
-William Howard Taft

This is on point Dave. I want to believe in the Clintons. I want to believe in Obama. Hell, I respect Edwards for putting up a good fight and speaking up for the oppressed, but they are all calculating opportunists. Or is it the game?

Cynthia McKinney has been in the game for longer than all three and she never sold out.

I'ma be strategic with my vote and support the most progressive party and people out. And it is not Clinton, it is not Obama, and its not Edwards. I'll support them if I have to.

I wonder if she really knows what he's about, or if so, does it really matter to her. Perhaps she does, but she also realizes that more importantly, the issues you raise don't mean much to us. How many of us really stopped watching BET? How many of us really see him as a drug and smut peddler? How many of us saw him sell to Viacom and said " yo, he gettin' that paper though"?

She knows those issues are not our priorities, and that if you wanna bring a Black man down, you use another Black man.

Add sellout to asshole and hypocrite....but what does it really mean to us?

let's not forget one key thing here, darling -- bob johnson actually said, in response to people's anger at his offensive statements, that he wasn't referring to obama's youthful indiscretions; he was alluding to his work as a community organizer, as if that's something that should be discussed in hushed tones. who the eff is he fooling? and i won't even get into the crack he made comparing barack to sidney poitier in "guess who's coming to dinner."

shoot, if i knew one of my sons would go on to become the first black editor of the harvard law review, graduate magna cum laude, serve as a stellar state senator, a u.s. senator, then become the first viable (even likely-to-win) black candidate for president, i'd buy him a bong myself, hear?

c'mon, bob johnson's a joke and a disgrace, just like bill & hillary clinton. here's hoping that one, brother bob is the victim of a violent mugging at the hands of some kid raised on the pathology he's sold to the masses on BET. and two, that barack kicks the clintons' sorry asses, chicago-style.

keep rising, dave. i love you, man ...

Sheena,

I agree, some how I'm not quite buying Bob's response, claiming he was referring to something else-- right? He couldn't even manage to save a little dignity for himself by just admitting his wrongdoing and simply apologizing to Obama. I look at Bob's actions as cowardly. It takes a strong person to admit his/her wrongdoings. Imagine the courage Obama had to have to tell the truth about his past...most people would have lied til they couldn't lie no more...that's percisely what Bob is doing...lying because he is a coward.

So add coward to the list as well. Bob is a hypocrite, sellout, asshole, and coward.

Davey,

Let 'em have it Davey!

Our current president was a drunken cokehead, draft dodger (not really a draft dodger...they just let him walk away without serving). I live in Michigan and we couldn't even vote for Obama in the damn primary. Who the hell is "uncommitted"? The whole system is so f*ked up and rigged there isn't a lot we can do short of total revolt. Gotta keep bangin' on the system. Ease up on Bob though....he got all that money and it's gone to his head. Obviously the Clinton administration took good care of him during the 8 years Bill was in office (I'm sure he was a lobbying for certain legislation that would fill his pockets and apparently he got it...that's why he's with 'em now. Obama couldn't do that for him. I'm sure it's all about that money). Big money cats don't just back candidates because they like their hairstyle or the way the talk.....it's always about what the candidate can do to fill up their pockets some more. I bet if you investigate a little more you will find out exactly why Bob is standing with Hillary & Bill. FOR THE DOUGH BRO!

The big things that we all have to remember is that the Republicans and the big corporations WANT Hillary Clinton to be the Democratic nominee. They want it so bad they can taste it. They even have (of all people) KARL ROVE out there talking about how she's the best Democratic candidate. Now why would they do that? That sneaky little pig does NOTHING without planning it out first. Here's my theory:

Hillary is a win-win for right-wing Republicans and corporate interests.

Here's why:

-If nominated, she would be the easiest to defeat. They have spent years building a loyal resistance to her, her personality, and her politics.

-She has taken more money from big corporate donors than almost anyone in the Senate (Republican OR Democrat)!

-If elected, you have to realize that she will maintain the status quo. Her corporate masters are already in her bank account.

-She's NOT going to bring about peace. Take a look at modern societies that have elected female heads-of-state for the first time. Most either continued wars, or created wars.

On the flip side, they're ALL afraid of Obama.

-The GOP has a lot to gain by keeping people in fear...it's how they work.

-The GOP wins if Americans stay busy hating each other while ignoring what they do up in the offices. Obama wants to heal the rift.

- The obvious one is that most Republicans are afraid of a non-white president

Letter is on POINT. What we are witnessing with all of these Black political figures attacking Obama is Bill Clinton asking them to now pay up for past favors he did for them. So now they have to sic who master says sic.

How can Johnson attack Obama who was/is HONEST about his use of drugs in the past and then say nothing about a lying former president who said he "puffed" but did not "inhale."

Get the book 40 Million Dollar Slaves, the brother has an entire chapter written about Johnson, explaining how he uses his "Blackness" when it is profitable.

BIBLE SYMBOLISM WHAT IT MEANS TO YOUR SALVATION
Gary Colin

The Black Church, Black Businessmen, And Plantation House N**gas (Chicken George)

African Americans in the "Black" Church and businessmen such as Bob Johnson will say that, "it's just business". Such African Americans ("Blacks") may feel that another Clinton administration is better for their financial income. They may even feel that another Republican or Democrat candidate is better for their personal concerns.

Considering all the suffering African Americans have experienced during our unsolicited "stay" in this country, you would think that all African Americans would want to see a "black" US President.

Unfortunately, the old adage still rings true, "blacks just can't stick together". And the sad thing is this, Barak Obama might just be a dam good canidate for the US Presidency.

Bob Johnson's programming already shows that he's of the "Chicken George" (slave overseer) mentality. The majority of BET's programming is "self-hate" religionists and "Christians" who worship the God of Finances and/or Entertainment.

Good ole family values and morals are no longer seen on the airwaves. We "Black" Americans have to turn down the dial hoping to catch, "Good Times", "Jeffersons", or "Sanford and Son".

Because of this "get mine" mentality seen in "Black" leadership, the African American race of people will continue to be "dum downed" and exploited until Sista Souljah's prophecy comes true. Her prophecy is that the Powers that Be will eventually declare African Americans unworthy to "coexist" with their race and reimplement slavery. Do you think I'm joking? Where are all Native Americans? They on "reservations". That's a nice racist world for, "unwillful residency", or "mild" slavery.

Minister Louis Farrakhan says that we, "Black" Americans are "free" slaves. Most of us thought that Farrakhan was crazy when he told us about the Mother Wheel Plane. This is the Judgment and Deliverance mobile throne of God by which he travels. Ironically, a multitude of caucassions in Texas saw this vessel on January 8th, 2008. These witnesses described the Mother Plane exactly the way Minister Farrakhan described it over 5 to 10 years ago.

On January 4th, 2008 I had a dream of a waning moon. On January 5th, 2008 by God's will I actually saw that waning moon with Venus above it. I knew that God was telling me something. I researched the internet and found out that I was looking at the "Crowned Scorpion" constellation. My search took me to Revelation Chapter 9, Joel Chapter 2, Job chapter 8, and to Mythology.

The conclusion of my research andmessage from God, which I printed on my website (on January 5th, 2008) http://www.webspawner.com/users/zionrapturetrouble was: "God has entered Mount Zion. Mount Zion is God's vessel in the Heavens. God will begin to gather His people before judging planet Earth". My family were all doubters until the end of 2007. The arrival of God's Mother Wheel Plane (Heavenly Mount Zion Hebrews 12:22), and other miraculous coincidences, have moved my family to belief and repentance.

Minister Farrakhan did not lie to us. He is 100% correct about Satan-king of demons ruling planet earth, white supremacy, American racism, the Malcolm versus Elijah confrontation, and God's Mother Wheel Plane (Galatians 4:26; Luke 21:28).

Slavery programmed African American "blacks" to personally hate themselves and other "black" Americans. Am I lying? Turn your televisions, music, and entertainment mediums on. This "self hate" will make it virtually impossible for an African American to ever hold a position of real power in the US ("us" means caucassions).

Even if Barak Obama overcomes this "impossibility" and does win the US Presidency, "they" will treat him exactly the way "they" treated former Major David Dinkins (no respect, no support, and destructive propaganda).

The hope for African Americans and any Godly people is not in BET, politics, finances, or pleasure. It is in God's Mount(ain) Zion (Matthew 24:15-22; Hebrews 12:22; Isaiah 2:1-5; Joel 2:1-33), which is Above "US" (the suffering people of color) (Lamentations 5:8-11; Matthew 24:15-16; Hebrews 12:22; Luke 21:28; Galatians 4:26; Ezekiel 1:15-21).

To receive an email copy of these Mother Wheel Plane "UFO" sightings, what the Bible says about these "UFOs", the dream given to Gary Colin (Joel 2:28), and the 100% percent accuracy of Minister Louis Farrakhan, contact Gary Colin at seeingbeyondthetrees@yahoo.com

Assante Sana for the article Davey,

I knew you would be on 'em soon. Bob "Mubuto" Johnson is one of the biggest sell-outs in the history of Afrikan People. We nicknamed him Mobuto because of the his billionaire status like Joseph Mobutu Sese Seko, who was involved in the assasination of Patrice Lumumba and amassed an estimated 20 billion in ill-gotten gains as he ran roughshod over the Congo (called Zaire while he was misleading).
I saw former congressman and civil rights leader Walter Fauntroy a couple of years ago in Gary and challenged him as to why the Congressional Black Caucus would honor Debra Lee and her work at BET. During our conversation, Fauntroy reminded me that Bob 'mobutu' Johnson worked as his press secretary and that the idea was to start a Black Educational Network. Fauntroy expressed his disappointment with Johnson and BET.
Despite the on-going work of the enoughisenoughcampaign.com, bet continues to spew poison to the masses, i.e. independent w/weebie & lil bossy "only time she need a man is for that good jugg." BET could have simply said no to this and other videos of this sort.
BET had so much potential to uplift the masses, but instead 'mobutu johnson worked along with the Clintons in filling up prisons with Afrikans and destroying our families.

Again, big ups for the article Davey and to Pastor Coates and those demonstrating with the Enough is Enough Campaign to end this ignorance.

i definately see the hypocracy. i don't plan to vote for obama or clinton, but i'm turned of by the lack of maturity and diplomacy during these political campaigns. it is'nt johnsons place to nit-pick at the faults of others when he's a criminal himself! constructive critcizm is fine, but snide little remarks are uncalled for. its him, the cantidates themselves, and thier supporters that turn me off with cheap petty shots at thier competitors; it allows them to avoid discussing the REAL issues/ solutions in full

You're the man Davey! I'm so glad you took the gloves back off. I can't believe you and your conterparts directly helped prop up this latter-day whore. I can feel the dissapointment for what could have been (or what once was). There's a special place in hell for Bob- and for the NSA motherfuckers that keep block calling me 3 times a day since I've been keeping it real on these blogs!

This could not be more on point. As a self-proclaimed media critic, I have been disgusted with much of BET's programming particularly after its sale to Viacom. He was in a unique position as a media owner to provide an outlet for us...to represent our agendas and interests, whether it be political, entertainment, etc. We have already established that it all boiled down to money...as a businessman/woman of course you want to make big bucks, but at what cost? In these days of increasing media consolidation, where newspapers in one outlet can own broadcast media in the same outlet, there are less opportunities for diverse voices. The Internet has helped in this regard, but there is still more credence placed on broadcast outlets. The powers that be don't always take blogs, myspace and the like seriously. Bob Johnson's outburst was icing on the cake for me; and HE is the one that really thrusted race into the forefront and made us look bad. This type of divisive talk not only hurts Obama, and Clinton too, but ultimately can reflect negatively on the Democratic party as a whole because we continue to look divided (and triflin' might I add). I don't think our political system is ideal but we should be looking at the basic short-term goal of not having another Republican in office! The mainstream media jumped on this battle over race and gender as another opportunity to divert our attention from the real issues of the economy, the war in Iraq, health care, etc. Thank you Dave for putting out there the history of BET and Bob Johnson's madness; and reminding us of the importance of critical thinking as individuals and a community.

(and thanks to everyone who mentioned the Dubya was/is a straight coke-head and alcoholic. Look/listen to him, it's obvious!)

D great article Bob Johnson. This is Curvey up in Seattle of Music Inner City. Not only did Johnson get rid of Tavis and Ed Gordon and Teen Summit was taken off, but the "Queen Of Nighttime Talk", Bev Smith was also taken off under Johnson. He is a power hungry punk who I have lost total respect for.

I remember Teen Summit and it was really a positive show. I remember when the beautiful Anada Lewis was the host, and even though she was a much younger lady at the time, she was a really articulate and intellegent host. That show introduced me to some artists who have become some of my all time favorites, like the gospel hip hop artists A-1 Swift, as well as other gospel artists that I have listened to ever since then ... Teen Summit was always really positive and was just an all around excellent show- it got young people THINKING...

However, I also remember the change that happened when that show went off...I think Ananda probably saw the "handwriting" so to speak and jumped ship to MTV, and all the sudden BET started having "Cita's World"...I too hated "Cita's World" that was real unnecessary and seemed like something right out of Spike Lee's "Bamboozled". It was like all the sudden, BET stopped doing ANYTHING valuable, and switched up a lot of what they were doing before, & began some kind of mad rush to be just like MTV (106 and Park being based on TRL, etc)...That time frame was truly when BET lost a lot of it's values, and most of the more intelectual and real hip hop artists stopped getting video airplay....
I havent had cable for a while (since 2005) and so I dont know what's "really going on"...but I just wanted to state for the record that there are some people of various other racial backgrounds who watched BET back when more intelligent shows were on, and did see the value of those shows-

Seeing that I havent had cable since 2005, when I do eventually get cable again, Im sure I will be shocked that some things have gone from bad to worse

Man you said a mouthful, but it really needed to be said. I always wondered why BET never rose to the occasion of displaying the beauty of our history. Thanks Man now I know someone else cares about our people.

Man, I've defended that asshole several times, saying that I think that some of the criticism levelled against BET is overstated. He's right that it's an ENTERTAINMENT business, and like it or not you have to cater to your audience, so "we" have as much to blame as anyone else for what kind of entertainment we get. Yeah sure we all SAY that we want "quality programming," but ratings & box office often show otherwise. If Akelah (sp?) & The Bee made as much as American Gangster, or even Barbershop, then that's the kind of movies the studios would be greenlighting.
And I'm sure that if Teen Summit got the same ratings that 106th & Park does, then it never would've been taken off the air. And, I admit, I felt good when I first saw him on the cover of Forbes, the year he officially became the first Black billionaire (one year before Oprah), just because it was nice to finally have on of "us" in the Top 1% of society.

However, I have now lost ALL respect for him. I couldn't believe it when I saw that. And then to try
to play it off like he was just talking about Obama's "community service?" Nigga please! You know what you were saying. And that's just foul.

You said it all brotha. I really cant say much more. I agree with everything. One more thing though, since slavery, why is it always some brotha that gotta come out against another brotha? Can we for once just be of one accord and support each other, espceially when its for something positive and good for our community. Damn those damn haters, toms, and anything else.

Peace

I totally agree and I think Hillary is an ass for letting him speak for her... just adds to all of the other reasons I think she's an ass though!... Getting back to OBAMA...lol you know me... the fact that he doesn't have a problem admitting that yes he's partied and inhaled...lol makes me like him that much more! I want someone who represents ME.... and I've been known to party from time to time ;-)

[QUOTE]And please don't get me wrong, I am in no way saying Obama is not above criticism. Instead all I got was a prèss release.[QUOTE]

before i respond to this quote, the whole issue with bob johnson didn't suprise me, an uncle tom will always be an uncle tom. he has so much money connections with the clintons that he's automatically one of their house niggers along with alot of our so-called "leaders" and fake pastors and radio personalities. so fuck'em and keep going.

now back to this quote. now, i respect your opinion, but you DO understand that by being up and center, a'la AL SHARPTON or JESSE JACKSON like, that he would be perceive as nothing more as another angry civil rights era BLACK MAN running for president, knowing he'll not going to win, but just to bring out some issues and build up some clout once jumping off. in other words he would be nothing but a PUPPET. obama isn't merely running for black people, but for AMERICAN people. he already did the grassroots thing, he started off as a grassroots activist and civil rights lawyer. so, if that's the type of politician you are looking for then he's exactly it. even as senator he handled issues like racial profiling and employment for those in poverty. but you have to understand that there are certain fights that are either in YOUR lane or not, and jena 6 wasn't in his lane, it would of alienate him as a race card politician, something that HILLARY almost effectively attempted to pull this past week.

i myself, may not agree with EVERYTHING obama says, because there's no such thing as someone agreeing with someone else 100% of the time. however he's the best representation of people of color. from reading both of his books, the 1st one was written before he even thought about politics, and the 2nd being his personal philosophy on bridging this country together. i have no reason BUT to support him. i mean from a man who came from basically nothing, just an average, unfocused, weed-headed teen, to MATURE and worked hard getting his degrees and becoming an elite harvard grad by NOT taking shortcuts or having a rich family and so forth, to through all that high paying job offers away to go to the southside of the CHI to become a grassroots activist and elevated from there? you cannot HATE on this guy.

alot of people criticize his speeches as being powerful, but fear they'll resort to nothing. and that's one of the biggest things i have to disagree. one of my GREATEST influences was malcolm x. now aside from one known incident of getting a fellow muslim out of the harlem jail, malcolm x did not physically bring forth change for the people, INSTEAD he INSPIRED people to change for themselves. and alot of peoples lives to this very DAY are changed from listening or reading some of malcolm x's teachings. so i dunno how come someone can be critical whenever obama gives out speeches that ARE that inspiring for people to hope and change for the best. especially when this nation will NEVER get fixed until all of us are involved.

i am personally am tired of the civil rights era of protesting. it's been 40 years of it and it's time for a new direction. we got these bob johnsons, these al sharptons, these bill cobsy's, these jesse jacksons, and so on and so on that are out of touch with the happenings of today or so in pocket with these "status quo" politicians. that's why i have a problem with the clintons right now, and not suprised that they're showing their true colors. they act like since they were so much "down" with the black ocmmunity that we OWE then something. and alot of black people are so blinded and even some having a willie lynch syndome effect, that the 90's was so great for black folks because of a REPUBLICAN CONTROLLED clinton administration. in reality, we did great in SPITE of that administration. one of the BIGGEST turning points of that decade for us was the million man march in which bill, himself, loudly protested. and that march was so impactful for black men to better themselves and their families and create jobs for their own and reduce black on black crime. we better OURSELVES and gave the clintons the credit!

today it's time for the baby boomers to past on and for the generation x to take over. obama is that generatino x movement. he arose from the 1st era of the hiphop culture. even though he admits not to listen to current hiphop (and we should he at 46) you can tell he understands how hiphop should be represented and how it's being minstreled today (undoubtly influenced during his 20's in the nid-80's while living in NYC). we really need to break that old 20 plus trend of bush, clinton, bush, clinton and carve a new path for us.

Thats ridiculous Gluv.. There's no excuse for Obama to not have been in Jena.. Perceptions??? Perceptions from who white folks??? Thats the same bullshit excuse the Dems have been giving for years and as a result a lot of key Black issues have not been addressed. If Obama is gonna be President he gonna govern us all.. The injustice that took place in jena with 60 thousand folks including a number of Congress peoiple warranted his support as did Katrina second anniversary rally.. If he backed away from jena because of fear of what white people will think, then he doesn't need my vote..
