Who Gives Kudos:

Thursday, June 07, 2007

I was discussing Maxim's Top 100 list with a friend and they referred me on to the AfterEllen list. Its the same thing, except for the lesbien community. 200 hot women, whats not to love right? The obvious next step is to compare and contrast.

First suprising thing is Maxim starts with #100, and AfterEllen with #1. I'd expect the men to want the immediate gratification of knowing who the hottest women of 2007 is first. Instead the lesbien crowd strikes first.

Next obvious thing is the show "The L Word" is apparently the most popular lesbien show ever. In fact I think every actress on the show makes the AfterEllen list. I'm not sure any one show dominates the men's list.

I was going to charge the women's list as favoring brunettes, but now that I really compare I guess both like the dark complexion.

However its clear there are different motivations behind the two lists. Maxim's list could be renamed "Women men would like to fuck" where the women's list would be named "Women women would like to date". The AfterEllen list has a lot of women on it who are accomplished, or show feminin strength. A lot of the women were probably on Maxim's list at one point, but even out of the spotlight, the women still pine for them.

Which brings us back to the obvious, women are experience driven. They crave strong experienced personalities. I think 20 years ago Jodi Foster probably could have been on the Maxim list, but now she's on the AfterEllen list. Perfect example of a strong successful personality. Lesbien or straight, women crave the same things.

So what drives men's idea of attractiveness? Like I said earlier, women we'd like to fuck would be an appropriate title, but why? I read once that man's instinct to procreate drove him to seek out young women as they were more likely to be fertile. That may have been true at one point, but most the girls on the maxim list don't seem like fit mothers to me. Hell Lindsay Lohan made the #1 spot???

I think the conclusion is while women are experience driven, men are fantasy driven. We need pin thin, slightly naughty girls to fuel our imagination. Where women are looking for confident sexy women who might provide that dreamy experience women long for. The man's interest will end right after the money shot, where the women are looking for something more.

Your analysis was interesting. Yeah, I think the male list is definitely more sex-driven, based on the prevalence of sprawling, tan, bikini shots. But why is Lindsay Lohan No. 1? I don't understand that, either based on her appearance or her possible raw sex appeal to men. On the list, sure, but No. 1, of all those choices?

By the way, it's not really "200 hot women," because there are a number of repeats.

It's not just actresses from "The L Word" (which I've never seen and it doesn't sound that great) but also other TV shows and movies that feature lesbian relationships. Like Piper Perabo, who is amazing, Lena Headey, Clea DuVall, and Mandy Musgrave. And women who are gay or bisexual, like Portia de Rossi, Kristanna Loken, and Ellen DeGeneres (the ones with asterisks by their names).

AfterEllen's list is more likely than Maxim's to have older women. And I think women are more likely to feel bad about shallowly evaluating women, because they themselves are women, unlike men, who can much more readily objectify women. (Not that women can't.) But on AE there are more face shots, and fewer breast implants. What I don't understand is why older women, who are almost always tanned to the point of red-orange-ish skin with splotches, and the worry of skin cancer, wear low-cut tops or dresses. It is not attractive.

But anyway. I will now go back to evaluating the creation of a European identity, and hope to sleep before 3.

great analysis of the AfterEllen list. i loved that list a whole lot more than Maxim's and i'm pretty happy with the way it came out. but i think if it was really experience or goal-oriented driven, jackie warner would have been a little higher up there than #96.

I actually don't watch the L Word...maybe I'm in the minority there. I like Sci-Fi and Fantasy, and I read comic books. Perhaps that's odd for a 30 year old lesbian, but whatever. LOL

But I was wondering if you could explain the "pin thin" thing to me. It eludes me because it seems...unfeminine. A long time ago, a (lesbian) friend once put it simply "I like women because women are soft." Maybe that's an over simplification, but there's a lot of truth in it.

The difference between men and women physically is that women have curves. Breasts, hips, butt = curves. Soft curves. grrrr And also, women biologically have an extra layer of fat. I'm not talking obesity or cellulite here, but you know softness. Technically it's all for the purpose of being able to endure harsher environmental conditions during pregnancy. But it all goes into what makes women different from men.

So what on earth is attractive about a woman who has deliberately shed that quality by starving herself? I mean, on top of that anorexia causes a woman's cycle to stop making her unfertile.

Obviously I'm looking to procreate. But I see an anorexic chick and I think she would be really unpleasant to...hmm...hold. Like I dunno, she might slice my abdomen open with her razor sharp elbow. Like I wanna lay on a pile of bones? I don't think so.
