June 28, 2007 - Thursday
Hello my friends. I hope all of you and your families are doing well. I wanted to post something based on all of the events that have taken place over the last few days. Many of you have sent me messages worrying about me and asking if I'm ok. Just so you know--I'm good, thanks for asking. I have quite a bit that I actually wanna discuss concerning the Benoit tragedy, the media's coverage of it, and what this means for the future of the business. If I am given the blessing of the powers that be in the WWE, I will write a very detailed, in-depth blog stating my unedited opinions. For now, I just wanted to address all of my friends, fans, and supporters with a summary of my feelings and thoughts.

I haven't always agreed with every decision Vince McMahon has made, but I do agree with everything he's done dealing with this situation thus far. Out of respect for the sudden death of Benoit's family and his contributions to the business, I think Vince did the right thing by canceling the scheduled Raw. When the decision was made to make Raw a Chris Benoit tribute show, the WWE was only doing what seemed respectful and right at that time. When more information was discovered, the WWE took a different and appropriate stance towards their programming. The ECW and Smackdown shows this week were dedicated to our great fans. Wrestling fans who were grieving and confused over this tragedy needed us, including me, to entertain them. I feel it is my responsibility, as well as my pleasure, to put smiles on people's faces and give them an escape from reality. I know Vince feels that way as well.

Chris Benoit was always kind, considerate, and professional when I interacted with him. Like everyone else, I was shocked when everything came out. I can't believe Chris Benoit and his wife and child are dead as I type this. As of now, all of the strange pieces of this puzzle haven't been put together yet. My thoughts and prayers go out to Benoit's other two children as well as the immediate family and friends of the deceased. More than anything, I feel terrible for little Daniel--he was as innocent as any human being could possibly be. This is a terrible and sad tragedy.

I am very disappointed with how many media outlets are lapping the entire population of professional wrestlers into this situation. There are many outstanding, wonderful people that do so many great things for the world that I work and wrestle with. It's not fair or accurate.

Tell the people you love that you love them, and never lose sight of what's really important in life. We may not ever understand why this tragedy happened, but we have to learn from it. Stay strong--life is too precious and too short. I have much more I want to say about the activities of the last few days. If it's appropriate, I definitely will. Be well my friends, I'll talk to you soon...

I don't like the way it's being investigated or handled by the media either. The way I see it is they jumped to conclusions and are sticking with their story. I don't believe Benoit would do this. I know WWE was in town for this past ECW and Smackdown wish I was able to go but wasn't.

You are totally right Techs. There is no understanding to be had.

Questions will forever remain unanswered in the minds of those who remain behind.
The best thing to do is to use what we have learnt from this tragic mistake.
Do not use drugs of ANY form unless they are to save your life and are given a perscription by a registered doctor for. And try and prevent from using them in the first place by keeping your body healthy by normal exercising which helps your mind as well.

Another thing to do is to keep the lines of communication open with those around you. If you are feeling down, share honestly with others so they may help you with your problems. If a friend approaches you and does not look happy or well, find out the truth of what is going on in their lives. You may be a lifesaver just by being a friend who listens.

Once again Matt hits the nail on the head by saying tell those who you love that you do love them. Appreciate those who are in your life. And care enough to CARE!

Hugs

We as yet do not know that he actually caused this tragedy. Someone else could have committed this crime. Let's wait and see what the evidence proves before we place judgement. After all, he was a regular person with regular problems and should not be judged hastily.

this week has been messed up. for some reason for all of last week i have been thinking alot about eddie guererro and its weird how i kept on thinking about him and then all of the sudden its like i hear that chris is dead. well first it was the death of sensational sherri that had gotten me to think more about eddie. maybe it was his way of saying that another wrestler was going to be joining him.
now i dont think that he could have done it. it doesnt make that much sense unless if someone was in the house with the family and could have done this.
chris was an amusing wrestler and hes going to be miss and if he did this then we shouldnt judge him we should let god judge him about this and that all we should do is just remember the career he had and all the things he has done for the wrestling business.

Hey you can't compare Eddie To chris. Eddie is not rotting in HELL like chris. He never murdered his family. Yea Chris was a good wrestler. I just can't praise a man that kills his is family and thkes the cowards way out. And by the way there was no one in the house who would strangle his wife then a day later smoother his mentally disabled son, then hang Chris. And it was not ROID RAGE. It was just him beeing stuid. He carefully planned it out. Yall need to make tributes to his son and wife and not him. That is all i have to say about it.

as a wrestler here in montreal, im taking this news way to hard.

I'm in shock. I cannot believe I am even writting this. The Raw show is on for him I cannot even watch it cuz it brings tears to my eyes.

Just yesterday I met one of my Idols Bret Hart, I was on top of the world, I really thought I knew how important wrestling was to me yesterday but today I know more then ever. Meeting a Idol One day and the Next Day Finding Out one died. Im just in shocked.

Chris Benoit Did so much for the business. He was a Business man above all. You work with him and you knew you were going to be learning something, He would take good care of you and give you 150% percent. He wasn't much of an great talker but you can see the passion he had for wrestling. He was a amazing wrestler,

For me personal Chris Benoit. I grew up watching since I was 4. He was always one of my favorites wrestlers. His respect and how much he loved the business taught me alot. I looked up to him as One of my Idols.

Ironic. I was with Samantha today and We were watching ECW one night Stand. Chris was wrestling with Eddie and I turned around and said. " He's one of the guys I wanna met one day". and I took a nap to find out 2 hours late that he was found dead.I cried and hard. I couldnt honestly believe it. My family laughed but they dont understand. i truly believe wrestling is something fans/wrestlers only understand. I feel as though something inside of me died. Like it was an brother that died.

we lost a great wrestler in the business.

chris your amazing. i have so much respect for you. you helped me in ways you will never know and i miss you. love you.

I don't know, because a monster does not fear God, but Chris put Bibles next to Nancy and Daniel to prove that he still feared God and may have regretted what he had done. I can imagine the guilt within him, but I am not the right one to accuse him. As for me, I condemn what he had done, but not Chris himself. We must remember him on the brighter side of things and not on this tragic one. Thanks for the blog Matt.

no one has sentenced Chris for anything and won't until the investigation is complete. But it wouldn't be fair to blindly defend him like you're doing either. I think Matt did the only thing that he could do, talk about the Chris he knew. Condemn the actions as wrong and tragic. The WWE has simply pushed pause on any more tributes to a man that MAY be a murderer of his wife and child until the facts come out.

Don't be such a prick to Matt and the WWE for trying to handle this tragedy the best way that they can. Especially since you didn't know Benoit and they did.

Nice blog Matt.

I agree. I have been a fan of Mr. Benoit's since his days a the Pegasus Kid. Heel or face, he always entertained me. If all of the things that are being said are true and not sensationalized by the media, then he was a very sick man. It really sucks that it wasn't discovered before this happened. I know what the stress of having a sick child can do to you. It really puts a strain on you. People react to these things differently. Sadly, this situation was handled in the worst possible way. My thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families of the Benoits and to other fans like myself who will miss being entertained by Chris.

Matt. I agree with you to a point and then to a point I disagree. True what Raw did needed to be done at the time however the WWE especially the Mcmahon's Linda more then Vince should have stated the following: Chris Benoit had steroids present at the house but until the toxicology reports come back in several weeks from now nobody can say Benoit was guilty of taking and or using them. Farther more How can the Mcmahon family sit back and let media portray speculative crap such as CNN repeatly saying the Entire Benoit family died and that Chris was administering the steroids to his son. We know for a fact that at least two other children weren't home at the time in question so that blows the "Entire" Benoit family references out of the water. Farther more On Good Morning America CEO Linda McMahon was a guest and side stepped the question of Chris and Nancy's son being MR and whether anybody knew it. I don't believe for a single second that The Wolverine wrestled for the WWE 10 yrs and That he brought his son to all his big matches case in point Wrestlemania 20's WWE Championship victory where his son embraced his Dad in the Middle of the ring immediately following Benoit making The Game tap to the crippler Crossface and The Mcmahon's are going to set idely by and state" We never knew his son was MR" How the hell do you know somebody 10 + yrs and see his son all the time and not be able to distinctly tell there's something wrong with him when you can see it plain as day by photos shown on CNN and all other shows.

Farther more I find it very profoundly Distasteful how they were so quick to resend their tribute to Chris when low and behold what else happened last night: Bret Hart was on Nancy Grace Live and stated that Low and Behold when Latino Heat Eddie Guererro Died of a heart attack once again it was induced by steroid abuse. Did the Mcmahon family resend and regret their tribute to him? I think Not. Farthermore I think it's sicking how there's some associated with Vince and the Mcmahon family claiming that 7 yr. old Daniel was victim of Benoit using the cross face to kill his son. I met Benoit many times back in the days of WCW through WWE and I for one doubt very likely that Chris would do that to his son.

Da Showstoppa,

You need to get your information correct before you post about it. Here are a few facts you were wrong on:

1. There was only one child living in the home of Nancy Benoit and Chris Benoit. That being Daniel Benoit. Chris has 2 other kids ages 14 and 10 that live in Canada with their mother. They did not live with Chris Benoit.

2. If you would have watched CNN last night you would have seen that Chris Jericho( one of Chris Benoits best friends) didn't even know that Daniel had Fragile X Syndrome. Chris and Nancy kept it personal because the Benoits were very private people. Only Daniels doctor and The Benoits knew about him having it. So it is not shocking that no one knew. Like Chris Jericho stated on CNN he wouldn't be surprised if even Chris Benoits own parents did not know daniel had Fragile X Syndrome.

3. Bret Hart never said any such a thing. Eddie Guerrero died of an enlarged heart and heart disease due to his previous drug and alcohol abuse and the stress of his schedule.
Bret Hart said he is still trying to wrap his head around this whole thing. It is shocking that Chris would do this.

4. At the time of the tribute airing WWE and everyone else did not know Chris had supposedly murdered his wife and child. They found out 2/3 rds of the way into the tribute. Did you expect WWE to cut in and say * We have been celebrating the life and career of Chris Benoit for 2 hours but we just found out in the 3rd hour that police suspect him of killing his wife and child. Let's trash talk him on live television before the facts in the case are known. * ?That would be totaly unprofessional and totally unfair to Chris, his family, his friends, and the many fans he had.

5. I don't know where you get your information but I have read no where about him using a crippler crossface on Daniel. I have only heard he used a choke hold.

In my opinion The Benoits had every right to not tell anyone about their sons condition. WWE wrestlers don't have to let the public know everything that goes on in their PERSONAL LIVES. In my opinion WWE and Vince McMahon did what they thought was the right thing to do at the time they aired the tribute. They owe no one an apology. Vince got on ECW television and said there would be no more talk of Chris Benoit. That was good enough for me.

No one will ever know what truly happened because no one was there but them and the Lord. I will not condemn him because it's not my place to judge him. That is a higher powers job ( no not the ones in WWE !!! ) .

Great blog as always Matt. I hope the higher powers in WWE will allow you to write an unedited blog about your thoughts on this whole thing.

Vince is doing what he thought he needed to do for business. Put yourself in his shoes. One of your employees is dead. His wife and son are dead. Your employee is accused of the double murder-suicide. You have stock holders. You could basically lose your ass if you back an alleged "murderer". Now I don't know if he did it or not. But there is still a possibility that this could all have been set up. Someone could have held chris and his family hostage. Someone could have killed his family and later done something to him making it able for him to be hung from his gym equipment. I'm just saying we weren't there. We don't know what happened.
Furthermore, vince didn't take back his tribute to eddie because eddie didn't kill anyone. He simply had a heart attack from steriods and years of alcohol abuse. eddie had one of those stories where he did bad when he was young but turned it around.
Benoit was a good man. He will be missed by wrestling fans. RIP.

I totally agree. I was starting to think i was the only one who thought this was a triple homoside. I don't care wat the media says, Chris Benoit was a great person with a huge heart. He doesn't have it in him to murder anyone, let alone his family. In the words of Chris Jehrico, "He LOVED his family, capital L.O.V.E, loved his family!". May peace be with the Benoit family and all of the grieving fans as i am one as well. Thank you and good evening.

Jesus H Christ people, I know we all love what Benoit was in the ring, but this blind loyalty is disturbing. Even Matt called him a "monster". I haven't seen anyone who knew him said "he didn't do it". He WWE hasn't tried to spin this, and they are gonna lose tons of money because of this. Who is gonna wanna watch the WM when he won the title? I know I dont. He was a great wrestler but lets not confuse that with a great human being. Remember him for what he was if you want, I will never be able to forget what he became. RIP Nancy and Daniel. You did not deserve this. I am the uncle of a special needs child and I raised him and his brother alone for 2 years and it can be hard, but that no excuse. So for all of you who blindly refuse to believe what your eyes see, go back to thinking that aliens killed Kennedy and that Bigfoot is Elvis' and the Lockness monsters love child.

Matt- your sentiments are exactly what many people really need to hear...so thank you for that. Irregardless of any future outcome to the situation, we should all remember to hold on to the memories that are part of us and not to throw them away when convenient. Sometimes people do things that we don't understand. ( I speak from personal experience.) If you cast off any memories, or your throw away your loyalty when things happen that you can't comprehend, then your loyalty and love were never real to begin with...Keep all of those who are grieving in your thoughts. Like Matt said, hold tightly to those in your own life and don't be afraid to let them know how you feel...because no one can ever predict what will happen tomorrow. I send my hope and prayers to all who need them...

I love the way you put it, and yes Vince's actions were just. I know you've worked with Benoit a bit and I know you're probably hurt by the situation greatly. So my prayers are with his family, and all of your coworkers, including yourself.
