Who Gives Kudos:

Tuesday, November 20, 2007
hello everyone
i met john when i went on a tour with ariel and bevan whose signer around europe a couple of years back now. he was playing keyboards for ariel and after a little bit he played with me too. it was him and i and greg and robert r and sometimes ariel would play bass with us as well. we played a show in paris (it was ariels first because he and john had problems at the uk border) and after me and greg and slice played john asked if he could play some of his own songs and i said sure. he hooked the sound guy up with his backing tracks and fully ripped around the stage and it was awesome. that tour had some grim moments (lost and stolen equipment and a shabby van whose door wouldnt fully close and whose engine wouldnt always start in the coldest early mornings) but besides those there was never a dull moment because john and these boys were always mixing things up and having good times.
a bit after that tour john gave me some songs that were going to be for his first album (hed played some at that paris show i think) and i liked them a lot. and then just a couple months ago john sent me his newest songs and i should say ive listened to them more than any others this year. theyre very emotional for me in the best ways perhaps because i first listened to them in an intense time in an intense environment. i dont mean to sell the songs short though because i think theyre really great. there are lots of small details in the way he produced the songs too that i get really into. well i just wanted to let people know as much as i could that his new album love is real just came out yesterday or so and i think its really good and i hope you all like it too. its on the upset the rhythm label and his page is here

thanks very much for reading and take good care.

Wow! I really liked the two sample album songs you can play on the website - both beautiful and different. "My Whole World is Coming Apart" is a compelling ride. In my mind it sounds like an innovative cocktail - I hear traces of loads of other artists i like - a jubilant version of the ultra-tight, snapping drum rhythms and driving baselines of Joy Division with orchestral synth work worthy of The Great Eno (though very distinct from his work), velvet chorus vocals reminiscent of Morten Harket (A-Ha) with a tiny dash of Jean-Jacques Perrey swirling things around. Fantastic!

I'm not intending to belittle Maus's originality or try to pigeon-hole his music, of course. Heavens No. I liked the music and wanted to convey my excitement by painting a simile-laiden comparison.

I'll be buying this record for sure, I can't wait to hear the other tracks. Thanks for the tip Panda :)

take care, lots of Love,
Julia xx

Testicular Manslaughter

Thanks Panda,

John Maus is a true artist. His songs are as well, true art. The real deal. John gave me a crd of his

songs in May of 2004. I remember the thing drove me into a manic fit. In the best way possible ,

like Shuggie Otis's songs can do. I am never affected by any music, it takes something like John

Maus to get any sort of reaction from me at all. These songs scream pain in the most beautiful and

fascinating ways. Maus songs are timeless. They will outlast most of what has come in recent

times.

Sincerely,
-Dana

I love John Maus a lot too, my friends think he's comedy oriented but i see a lot of emotion in his music.
