Current mood:THE OPPULENT....
Category: Life

One thing I've noticed about well brought up children of the rich, is that they often don't realise they're rich - or at least how rich they are......

I had a girlfriend who was this way.

That she was comfortably off was clear from day 1, but because I don't pay too much attention to money, it didn't occur to me (or apparently her) that she was to one day be SUPER rich..

Her father worked for the Dutch Embassy, but he could also be some kind of a spy.

She was brought up in The Yemen.

She spent time in The Sudan.

And when I went through the list of the other countries she'd lived in, I found the postings often coincided with political events...

The story was that he was sent to sort out administrative problems.

And the last I heard of his activities was that a year or two after September 11th, he'd been spending a lot of time in Pakistan.

Maybe there were a lot of administrative errors happening in Pakistan???

Financially speaking, I only realised just what was what, when we went to visit her grandparents in Belfast.

It was well over a year after we'd met.

The house was a nice size and as we pulled in, she told me it was built in the style of Charles Rennie Macintosh
.

At the time, I didn't know anything about architecture or design and though it was quite a good looking gaff, the name meant nothing and it wasn't that which give the game away...

That was a later, when I found myself sitting next to a brass heron..

We were having tea in the conservatory, and her Grandad was reading an antiques magazine..

I was still feeling the whole situation out, as you do when around potential new family...

Do they like me?? Do I like them??

Then her Grandad says:

'I see there's a pair of these (notions in mine and the brass birds direction) herons gone for £15,000'

He said it as if he were commenting on a set of new and controversial road works..

'OH SHIT!!! THIS FUCKING BIRD'S WORTH MORE THAN I AM!!'

I thought..

It was the notification to inform me they weren't short...

This difference in fortunes duly noted, I began to pay a bit more attention to my surroundings and it was then soon very obvious just how rich they were...

Everything in the house worked very well.

The shower in my room ran hot perfect powerfully and changed temperature as and when you told it to - in my experience not many showers do that..

Then there was a picture on the wall of their old home that had sat on the same land..

It was a mansion.

It'd been knocked down, the land portioned up and sold (on which 3 or 4 other large detached houses now stood).

I then noticed the gatehouse

And they mentioned the house down the road that was rented out - 4 or 5 stories of grandiose town house also on Belfasts Malone Road...

There was the Ming Dynasty Pottery that had been rescued from a ship wreck...

The large collection of original watercolours that were worth £12,000 a go..

And then there was the docks...

We were going to see a bird reserve because they knew I was interested in birds.

Another thing I've noticed about the rich, is the things that impress them..

Art and Nature are 2 (because they're both bigger and stronger than money???)

It was lucky that I could talk about both..

Anyway, we were driving to see the birds, and on the way they pointed out the docks..

The Thompson Docks

Their docks

Her Grandads family name is Thompson and they were the docks where the Titanic was fitted out - exactly what the link was has slipped my mind, but these docks are still the biggest dry docks in the world...

Well, initially, I felt a little overwhelmed by all this, but then I started playing the game.

In the evenings, I would also read the antiques magazines, and I'd start asking questions about particular pieces, and her Grandad would show me this and that and once I'd got the vaguest of handles on it all, we'd discuss the market and what was worth having and what wasn't...

I soon got used to all that.

That bit was easy..

One evening, when her Grandparents had gone to bed, I pointed out to my girlfriend, that I believed her family to be SUPER rich and that given that she was an only child, one day she would be SUPER rich too - in fact she already was...

'My Granny once said that Grandad could be a millionaire..' she said..

But she didn't seem to believe or understand it...

Well brought up being the operative words.Isla's paternal Grandmother has spent her entire working life exorcising the horrors of having been brought up in a council house, jettisoning everything that's stood in her way including the small matter of raising her child herself.

Can we have some more PG insights into rich folk?I dont get why people have kids if they are going to outsource their upbringing to some institution that charges obscene amounts to teach
the art of avoiding buggery but I'd love to hear what you have to say about it all...

Obviously people have kids for all kinds of reasons. I don't see the point unless you plan on spending time with them..

Speaking very very generally, I'd say that a lot of English folk love their kids, but don't much like the idea of childhood. Other countries (Italy being one) love the whole thing - childhood is worshiped and remains the center of everything..

There seems to have been the resurgence of interest in kids and childhood in the UK of late - but it often seems a bit fake to me...

As my history teacher at school once said: 'These days people want something they can take back if it doesn't work out - like a video recorder..'

Plenty of people get caught up with money - whether you've got it or not, I reckon the most important thing is to not let it dominate..

I find plenty of wealthy folk who have a better, more relaxed and generous attitude to cash than people who have a small or medium amount of cash...

But as with everything, it depends on the individuals concerned..

It's a good thing rich kids/people dont realise how well off they are otherwise they'd all go around feeling embarrassed about it.

I known a few well off people myself and lots of them (bar a few stupid few who I've cut contact with) feel like they ought to be poor to be cool.

I think when Jarvis Cocker of Pulp was singing Common People in jukeboxes and clubs in the mid ninties he really did intend it to be something that the rich kids would think was cool. Cos then they really could be the subject of derision by the poor kids who couldn't order as much as em at the bar.

The irony of it all.

Yes write more about rich people's attitudes on thier social status.

While your at it do something on Jarvis Cocker and his band (Different Class period) if it interests u.

He was such an amazing icon...what the hell is he up to now?

For some reason being skint is seen as being cool and edgy..

I find it to be a pain in the ass most of the time, though I'm not sure being rich would be too good for my health..

It makes me laugh when people think getting rich is going to solve all their problems - all it does is vanquish one set of problems and replace them with another..

It's all relative. I'm very aware that though I'm way behind with bills and have no real disposable cash, I still lead a very high standard of living and that as a country, this one is super rich...

Cocker's still recording as a solo artist - in fact I think he's released something recently..

As a band, I don't really know Pulp. I've got Different Class and This Is hardcore and that's it...

I tried doing my very first interview with Cocker, but he wasn't keen...

I've got those two.

Pity he wasn't keen as I'm sure the two of you would have provided us some great entertainment.

Ask him again mabye?

If u do a piece on him I'd be grateful if u could point out what hes done recently for those who've lost track of his movements.

I soppose I should just do my own research but to be honest I think it might add to the ever growing list of things I wanna do.

Spoke to Pete about the supergroup...he is very keen.

I've spent plenty of time around the rich and the super rich and the so rich they haven't a clue how rich they are types and the thing that gets me about anyone from "old money" is that they seem to have this air of entitlement coupled with the ability to be the tightest peopelo around.
That said I love visiting an uncle who is totally blase about the Miro and Picasso that clutter up the wall! Yep real decent sized paintings, not bad when you think he grew up living off commercail st in the east en and in hackney!!

Your so right about them being tight.

When I fundraise on London's streets they are the people thet really don't stop to talk.

When they do they hardly ever give the money man.

I know what you're both saying and to a degree the only way you can have big money is by being professionally mean...

However I've been treated with great generosity by rich folk on number of occasions - including on that trip...

Class division is the root of most of the social issues around the world.
religion and racism has kept the lower end of the financial spectrum in-fighting with each other whilst the rich get richer.
That said, inverted snobbery is just as unhealthy as snobbery.
Its not anyones fault to be born into money and like you said it does come down to the individual.
You tend to find self-made higher classes tend to do a better job of keeping their kids grounded and as a result these kids respect all walks of life and dont turn their noses up at someones clothes or the council flat they go to one night for a party.
They should feel no reason to be embarresed at the riches they possess but ignorant rich kids do create envy amoungst the lower classes with their warped views on life and how easy they seem to get it.
the irony is most of the ignorant rich kids never seem to have the same family bond, Common sense or life experiences as someone from the council estate.
Its impossible to generalize any walk of life but ive seen a lot of evidence from door to door charity workers that poorer areas seem to give more than richer areas probably because they can relate to the "People worse off than ourself" mentality a lot more than someone whose never had or associated with anyone whose ever had a financial care in the world.
Not the biggest Pulp fan myself but when you think back "Common People" did hit the nail on the head.
Weve all worked with or studied with someone who CLAIMS to be skint but you know they..re not choosing between 8p noodles and cigarette papers... or dinner or electricity... but like I said its through no fault of their own and a lot of rich folks worked hard to get where they got.
That said when 10% own 90% of the planets wealth something aint right.
RE: Pulp...Seen Jarvis Cocker @ Connect almost a year to the day and he angred the crowd a little by refusing to play one single Pulp song in front of a festival crowd who lets face it only turned up in their droves to hear Disco 2000, Sorted for Es n Whizz, Common People or This Is Hardcore. he even teased a Pulp number at the last song before doing another solo song called "Cunts are still running the world"

All good points..

Like I said above, being rich and being poor are the same in the sense that both states supply problems...

If I was to choose, I would say that having been skint for 33 years, I think I'd rather be rich for a bit now - just to try it out...

As for Cocker, it does my head in when acts don't play the hits, particularly at festivals.

I can understand not wanting to do it, but if that's how you feel why play a big show where you know the crowd is gonna be wanting the hits???
