Throughout my career as a writer, I've met people that trusted me without knowing me well and they have helped me, enabling me to follow my dreams. I've been visiting the pages of readers this last year and I've seen excellent works by actresses & actors, musicians, directors, etc. That's why I thought: why not make a movie together? I would retain the rights of the film based on my latest book The Witch of Portobello while developing this partnership. From then onwards, I've developed the following project, already registered:

1. The book, The Witch of Portobello, is divided into 15 narrators/perspectives. Most of them – 13 – directly interact with Athena, the main character. Here is the list of narrators:

Up-date 1 : The following characters have already reached the quota :
Lukas Jessen-Petersen, Newspaper, Pavel Podbieskli, Heron Ryan, Samira R. Khalil, Derdre O'Neill, META NARRATOR : Scotland Yard, Padre Giancarlo Fontana, Lella Zainab

Therefore the following characters are still open for submissions:
Andrea McCain, Antoine Locadour, Liliana, Nabil Alaihi, Peter Sherney, Vosho 'Boshalo'

2. Each filmmaker is invited to choose a character and film his/her perspective.

3. Those that wish to participate will have to record a video will have to up-load their videos in their Myspace account (of course the original version has to be in a good definition and with perfect sound).

This filmmaker will have to illustrate the scenes where the narrator interacts with Athena. Since there will be a myriad of projects, I am aware that Athena will always be a different person (Caucasian, African, Asian, etc). This plurality is welcomed since Athena's character is supposed to be "fleeting".

The filmmaker that chooses a narrator's perspective will have to make all the scenes of the book in which this narrator interacts with Athena, not merely one chapter. I would prefer that the filmmakers stay close to the scenes of the book (for instance, if a filmmaker chooses to narrate the story of Athena from the perspective of the priest Giancarlo Fontana, he/she will have to illustrate the scene where Athena is refused the communion after her divorce).

4. Filmmakers have to create a Myspace account and upload their version.

Once your movie is up-loaded in your myspace account you can send the link directly to my profile in myspace :

http://www.myspace.com/paulocoelho
and to witchofportobello@gmail.com

5. Once we select the best videos our lawyer will get in touch with you and will send you the contract and the address to which you will have to send your original material. There will be a 3 000 € prize for the filmmakers that are selected. The rights of image will be entirely given to us.

6. Once this selection is made and the original material sent to us, our professional editor will use them in order to recreate the book. We will make all the efforts in order to show the final version in film festivals throughout the world and equally sell the right to distributors (even though this may be very difficult).

7. We also invite musicians from Myspace to create either a general theme for the feature film, or themes for each narrator and/or character. In this specific case, we will pay 1,500 € for the theme chosen and the artist will have to sign a contract in which he will be granting us the rights for the film (but not for the disc). For the musicians, please up-load your song into your myspace profile and send a message to Paulo Coelho's myspace profile: http://www.myspace.com/paulocoelho

8. The films can be recorded in any language as long as they are submitted with English, French, Portuguese or Spanish subtitles. Do not worry about eventual accents because most characters have a foreign accent.

9. The deadline for inscriptions is the 25th of July 2008 and the results will be known by the 24th of August 2008, the date of my birthday.

You may be asking yourself, what's the advantage of all this?
From my point of view, while retaining authorship rights, I'll be diving into a new experience and seeing before hand the plurality of views about my book.

From the contestant's perspective, if we manage to close the deal with big festivals and/or distributors, they will acquire a wider visibility.

Last but not least, we would be doing a bit of cinematographic history together: a film directed by its narrators!

I hope you like the idea. Take into consideration that if we don't receive materials that are up to our standards the project will be cancelled. All those that wish to participate, please register below.

We wish for this to happen. And here is the first film made by its participants!

Love,

Paulo

One question... will you consider animated or computer-generated scenes alongside filmed ones?

It is my sincere hope that when chosing those to represent your movie that you use real Witches since they will know the Goddess in and out and hold great respect for them others whom do not practice might not have nor the knoweldege of her herstory. Just my thoughts.

Hi Paulo,

You are saying in your mail that I can subcribe "below"... I cannot find that button, or am I looking over it. So, I would love to subscribe and to make a movie for you.

Why? If you allow me I would like to share some thoughts with you.

I know you're work and have read some of your books. I like them very much. But I had not red "The Witch of Portobello" So it was because of your call to make a film of the book, that I started reading it. It was just the message I needed in my live... Athena had to go through changes by letting everything go she has learned till then, dance against the rithme, going through complete emptiness, afterwards she was aible to dance even better... That's what I want to do now... but it is damn hard to do this. I wanna try it with your challenge of making a movie that shows that moment of emptiness, I don't know how and with who but I just want to try it. So even if I don't succeed it is a good thing for me to have red the book.

Yours sincerely
Kwitelle

Hello Paul,

Nice to meet you here. A friend of me noticed me about this happening. I never readed a book from you so it will be the first time. I will read the 11 chapters and let my thoughts and feelings compose the music. When it is finished I will put it in the myspace.

I think that is the way it should go or am I wrong?

Kind regards,

Tejo

Hello mister Coelho,i'm a filmmaker from Roma,Italy,i'm interesting to participate to this project,so i'll take a copy of this book and i'll try to make this experimental,it seems something of mystic and magic tales, misterious characters and intrigate plot.

I like it and this good idea,it can be a very original way for making a movie by a book.

So can i realize it in italian with english subtitles or in english language directly?
So do we have time for making it and for uploading until 25 july?
Thanks for the attention,
See you soon,
Paolo

Hi Paulo.

I submit my song called: "Nosferatu", (track No.1) on my MySpace page.

It's also available as "Nosferatu Remix", (track No.2) on my Myspace page/ music-player.

I feel like you, that communication, and especially the words we speak to one another, are vitally important to our very existance.

Your words are conveyed through writing, mine through singing.

Both our words touch the very soul of the man, woman & child.

My song HAS THOSE ALL IMPORTANT WORDS.

iT IS NOT JUST ANOTHER 'READY MADE FOR MOVIE SOUND-TRACK'.

Please listen carefully to the words I am singing, (a copy of Lyric will be Emailed on request).

Everybody who has listened to this song so far, says that THE MELODY & WORDS STICKS IN THEIR MINDS.
IT WILL BE A FANTATIC CALLING CARD FOR THE MOVIE, AND IT TOO, FOR ME!

FINALLY: The two main characters highlighted in my song are Nostradamus and Nosferatu.

WHY DID I CHOSE THEM? (or did they chose me?): Because, of the way they both WERE VILIFIED, PERSECUTED, and then 'ACCEPTED' into the history books (LEGEND).

I rest my case.

Thank you!

Adam

Hi Paulo I just turned in my video which I called Liliana and I just wanted to share this:

I picked the Liliana character because to me it was the most moving chapter. Liliana is such a beautiful character and it was an honor to work on a great story like The Witch of Portobello. With you being my favorite writer and filmmaking being my passion, I am proud to to have achieved this dream.

Thank you for the opportunity.

Timeless Sonic Factory

Dear Paulo Coelho,
I like your idea for your book "La Strega di Portobello"!
I'm an italian musician, a composer, a thereminist.

I composed this track after reading your book.

I think my track is good for "Nabil Alaihi".

The title of my song is "All God's Children Can Dance".

Technically, I've used my Theremin, organ and percussions.

Organ and percussions for giving to the track an ancestral movement of dance, and Theremin for giving to the track an ethereal melody.

If you have never seen a Theremin and thereminist (as me), I suggest to see a Thereminist play this instrument.

You play this instrument on the air, with your hands, without touching any keyboard or any "material" instrument. Simply you play with your hands in a electric field generated by two antennas, and the music flows as a magic.

I hope you like my homage!
You will find my track "All God's Children Can Dance" on my "myspace" called Timeless Sonic Factory as requested by you.

Hi, Paulo. I contacted you through your myspace account with a message that my first 3 songs on my play-list are there for your consideration for the film version of your wonderful book as the theme. You can choose which song of the three you want to use as the theme. I'm also contacting you here as well (and I hope you don't mind) because I really want this opportunity and I believe that the mysterious and slightly ominous mood of the songs would fit the film perfectly. I want to thank you again for this opportunity you are giving not just to me but to other musicians and filmmakers and for giving me courage to follow my dream. Have a good weekend dear Paulo. Cheers, Dario.

Song list: 1. Film Noir 2. Perhan 3. First Shot of Moonshine.

Hello Paulo, I'm Alessandro Gabrieli and I would partecipate to the soundtrack contest for our movie based on your book.

My song is an experimental ambient-electro-newage that I think could represent the witch introspective and old celtic english forests and neighbours of London/Portobello with all relative sacred areas/ambient.

The music is the only one on my Myspace Player: "Pinewood Fire Rain"

I hope you will have similar ambiental/pantheist sensations with my composition.

Your sound-editors could also envelope the volume if they want, with no problems.

Thanks and best regards Paulo! :D

I am a military veteran with a history of serving demons in my past in the deep heart of Central America where I was tortured, imprisoned and left to die. I did not however and have grown to a poet, songwriter and musician and hopefully healer. I have produced music independently for the past 20 years focusing on the light inside and not road managers or contracts. I thank you for helping encourage the growth of this light and helping me bring healing into a world where I once brought destruction. I have a song that might go with Pete Sherney or may not its a modernized form of "gypsyesque" movement calling in that release which comes through dance. It’s on myspace. com/troiatkinsonmusic. Being a music site, there are 6 songs downloaded. Please feel free to take a listen to any of them but “forever thankful was the one I had in mind. Thanks again and keep on “rockin in the free world, baby”.

My favorite is "the alchemyst".Well,i descover your interesting project and i decided to take part.I'm a musician and in this last ten days i wrote something for you.I've been inspired by an idea.A strong image went through my mind and hit my soul. It was the image of Athena dancing into dinamic meditation.I felt her growing energy during this meditation and immediatly a music was born in me. So, i wrote the music and i turned it into reality.I'm sorry for the quality of recording but in few days and without the help of none it has been difficult to achieve a better goal. You can find the song on myspace profile.I hope you'll appreciate my work.Regrets,love.
