OK....I came back to the UK and got wheeled off the plane...A first I must say! Felt a bit like Elizabeth Taylor! Got an MRI scan this morning, and am now sitting up in bed with my left foot like a dead fish....freezing and numb. I'm going to have to get myself a crutch and a parrot, so I can fob myself off as a pirate and scare the neighbourhood preschoolers! Just kidding folks!
Some of my plans and schemes have had to be put on hold, because there's not much I can do if I can't walk properly!!! Hey Ho!
I've been reading the front pages, with images of civilians in Georgia, who've just been blasted and bombed out of their houses. The sight of a little grey haired old lady lying on the ground screaming in anguish..blood spattered bodies.. Mothers with babies standing in front of their ruined homes. The revolting abomination of war. It makes me so angry to see innocent people being subjected to this violence time and time again. "War" is legalised murder. It should be criminalised. Those who perpetrate it should be held personally accountable for every single drop of blood spilled, every limb smashed, and every life decimated. What on earth in wrong with these psychotic morons who give orders to violate people in this way??? All these "leaders of men".....murderers...every one of them. I'm sickened.

Look at the Birdie!

Bet it was all on account of your FLIP FLOPS

Get some really good supportive shoes for going to conferences in...good supportive walkers

Please show the doctor the shoes you wore, how much walking you did, etc

New Balance makes good shoes...whatever you get - break them in!

High Heels and Flip-Flops Cause Back Pain
Christina Lasich, MD
Physiatrist
Grass Valley, CA
What do shoes have to do with your spine pain? Everything!

Shoes support your entire body as the only contact between you and the ground. Alignment, support, ride quality … Hey, this is beginning to sound like a tire commercial. Well, shoes are like tires because they provide for your comfort (ride quality), your stability (support), and your posture (alignment). Good shoes can put you on the road to spine health.

Comfort
Suppose you had to walk around barefooted on a concrete floor for a few hours. That would not feel very comfortable because nothing is cushioning you against the jarring of the hard surface. With every step like a jack-hammer, the impact travels all the way to your spine. Pound, pound, pound … Over time, these shock waves will cause pain in the pressure-sensitive structures of your spine like the discs, joints, and ligaments.

You must buffer your back against the hard reality of the ground. Most high-heeled shoes, cowboy boots, and sandals (including flip-flops) fail to give a cushy step in your stride. You need air pillows to ease the hurt caused by the hard ground. The tire manufacturers figured that out when they switched from hard rubber to inflatable tires. Before you hit the road, it's time for you to upgrade to better ride quality with well-cushioned shoes.

Stability
Your shoes also need to be very supportive. If your foot is wobbling, slipping, and sloshing around, all the extra movement travels right up the leg to your spine, which is hanging on for dear life just to maintain balance. Some women seem to enjoy teetering on their toes in the spiked high heels. Walking should not be a balancing act that places your body at risk for injury.

Flip-flop wearers especially endure an unstable shoe. Flip-flop, flip-flop … That is what the heel is doing, just flopping around. A good shoe always controls the heel with a strap or a cup. By stabilizing the heel, your shoes should provide a solid foundation for the entire limb and spine. Without good footing, your back will blow out from all that stressful shaking and leave you stuck at home.

Posture
When was the last time you checked your alignment? That's right your alignment—your posture. Start by checking your feet. Foot position affects the position of your ankles, knees, hips, and spine.

High-heeled shoes unnaturally place the heels above the toes. Even the slightest adjustment to the foot can throw off your body's entire alignment. The spine is very vulnerable because it has specially designed curves that evenly distribute your weight. High heels alter these curves. Eventually, this poor posture places too much uneven wear on the discs, the joints, and the ligaments of the back.

Wear out your back parts and you will have pain. All the parts in you (or your car) have to lineup properly or the whole system breaks down, leaving you on the side of the road.

A shoe has everything to do with how your back feels. By providing comfort, stability, and proper posture, your shoes are the foundation for you. Shoes are the only contact between you and the road. And like tires, shoes have everything to do with your performance on the road.

It is fine to wear bad footwear (like high heels and flip-flops) occasionally; just don't make it a habit because unhealthy habits lead to chronic pain. So next time you choose shoes to wear, think about choosing to feel better. With comfortable ride quality, stable support and proper alignment, your spine will feel better over the long haul.

Wheeled off the plane? Annie, please get well soon!!

Regarding war, it is probably the most senseless act known to the human race. Has anything good ever come out of a war? I can't think of a single thing. Oh sure, economies benefit, but what a cold and meaningless benefactor.

War's entire premise is death and destruction. It's entire meaning is rooted in force and violence. And yet it has been the tool of tools among nations when things don't go according to plan. Appointed officials - elected or not - decide for the entire nation that destruction is the only option.

On and on, insanities...

Oh Annie! a wheelchair ugh....well I hope that you do NOT feel like Elizabeth, as she is not doing
well at the moment, sad to say.. I know some of her family and friends. She has lived some life,
another activist in her own right....

"Legalized murder" - correct.. I was saddened by that same image you saw of that poor woman so flattened...
I can't stand this earth at these times. But this is our lot... we either sink or swim against the monstrosities of men.
and there is a commercial that has been running of the polar bears... I just can not bear it any more. "pun not intended." I cry... this is beyond sadness.
I have nothing more except the hope that the universe will change the minds of men and nature.. that by some miracle.. will tilt towards the rescue of humanity.

Sounds very painful, Annie...! Did the MRI show anything?? Hope you'll be up on your feet soon again...!!

War IS criminal, and this war in Georgia sickens me to death.... And there is so f*****g little I can do about it.... The only thing I try to do myself is to never get angry at the people around me, the people close to me (this does NOT include the morons that go to war!!), no matter what happens.... It's such a waste of energy, it doesn't help and you only lose precious time that can be spend in harmony....

Lots of love from The Netherlands,

This world is mad. Listening to the news in radio today was devastating and the tears were running of no possibility to influence on the real cause... Now Russia is destroying South Ossetia, like the US Iraq, the civilians are totally unprotected and the UN, Red Cross and other organizations are gathering their resources for help. No sense at all. We can only put some patches on the damages caused by the world leaders committing huge crimes against humanity.

Hopefully you get on your feet soon, until that, just for a while to get rid of this ugly world, close your eyes every now and then, and be Elizabeth :)

Dear Annie

I really hope you get better soon!

"Psychotic moron... murderers..." I'm sickened every time I hear news reports on the radio about the Zimbabwe negotiations where a person perfectly fitting the description you give may just continue to be that country's president!!!

I hope you keep your mind occupied with positive things as well whilst in bed! One can download fascinating music composing programs from the internet... Watch a bit of telly... Read a book... OR... have fun with the people looking after you and BE Elizabeth Taylor... just read the contra-indications stated on the insert-paper in your prescription medication box, and then tell those caring for you things like 1) 'I think I have hypersensitivity towards sulphonamide... 2) My hepatic function is impaired (don't know what it is...)... 3) My vision is blurred, call my optician! etc etc.

Hugs from your silly South African friend.

... a few things that has helped me with my constant back ache (I suffered a compression fracture in my lower back three years ago):

1. Sleeping on my back with a pillow under my knees or on my side with a pillow between my legs;
2. Being disciplined in doing the mild exercises given to me to strenthen my stomach / back muscles; and
3. Remembering to eat something before I take pain or anti-inflammatory medication which tends to mess up one's stomach.

I really hope you feel better soon!

Sorry to hear about your back! Back problems can be very hard to handle, but it seems like you did the right thing to get the MRI. Sometimes stress sets this sort of thing off. So Rest!!

I was just looking at images and reading about what is going on in Georgia. Brings tears to ones eyes. I can't understand why so many always jump to war? Why not try to work it out in more constructive ways, without the bombs and murder. Yeah.. most of the leaders are men. But not all men are murderers and agree with such acts. A lot of men like myself find this revolting too. I too am sickend.

Anyway, glad to hear everything is going well with "Sing" and that Mexico was a hit. Except for your back problem. Feel better!

Annie;

I couldn't agree more with you, the russian attack in Georgia is sickening(saw it in BBC and Euronews )they defenly got to held responsible the new rusiian president, nobody got to get away, even W got to be accountable in the International Courth of Heague.

Is so sad seen civilian been inocently attacked, but since WW1, the casualties of war were 90% military and 10% civilians, somehow we ended up the other way around,in the last 20 years wars casualties account of 90% civilians and 10% military, isn't crazy?

If you choose a career in military and you been paid to be a mass murder, or to be killed, then do it to another of your kind, but killing civilians is the most coward and low class of war-doer,since civilians don't have arms to defend themselves,or are attacked by surprise.
We have to look no further than Iraq,Sudan,Gaza streep,Israel,Lebanon...were cowards lunch misilies to cities ono civilians, always they excuse is for represails for something else(hostages, etc ect)

The attacks in Georgia follow this model, certainly Russia is not different that any another "terrorist state",Im wondering there is oil also in Ossetia south,in Georgia too?
wasn't to long ago that the Putin attacked Georgia?

My only wish is that the United Nations do something, forget about W in China,he is having a blast, and nothing that he'll said had any ground of authentecity.

Have a good Rest Annie, don't street yourself much, you did enough this year.

Peace
Julian

ps; I don't support any war, doesn'tmater the cause, but if you choose the military as a career, well is your choice, legalize your act of crimes under the eyes of patriotism, hmm patriotism, funny word, seems to justify the unthinkable.

""... the russian attack in Georgia is sickening""

Yeah, of course, Russia is always the bad guy, isn’t it? Don’t eat everything that your media offers you.
It’s not a black / white story. And there isn’t one good guy and one bad guy.
A few months ago I started to listen to a radio station that broadcasts original news from all around the globe in my language (Russian news incl.) … I can tell you what the current news doesn’t mention: Georgia committed several bomb attacks in Abkhazia (one the two regions) this year, e.g. a bomb attack at a bus station. Georgia also killed dozens of Russians or threatens them. The majority of the people in these two regions is Russian. So, Russia does what every country of this world does: defending its citizens. This sad story didn’t started 4 days ago. It started months and years ago.
I was on vacation in this region in 1988. It’s a very, very beautiful place. I’m very sad what happens there.

Hello Art; good to see again ;)

I didn't say that the russian are the good or bad guy, but you proven the point I did before;

"We have to look no further than Iraq,Sudan,Gaza streep,Israel,Lebanon...were cowards lunch misilies to cities onto civilians, always the excuse is for represails for something else(hostages, bombing, etc ect)""

As it seems because geogians did bomb attacks on russian soil, so now Russia got to defend their land or citizens, but the weirdest thing is that russian citizens lives on both side of the frontier, in Gerogia,Russia,Ossetia south and Abkhazia, the frontier at this point doesn't mean anything, is just the goverment trying to get hold of economics profits(oil)using patriotism as thier flag.(if they really cared for their citizens they would look for the whealthfare,at all levels)

The again ,who has to suffer? ;the passenger of the bus(civilians),not the bus driver(goverments),seen it thousand of time before, and it will happen till the end of times, sad but true.

Where are the Peacemakers, United Nations,Red cross??
somebody got to make this madnes stop. Thanks for the update Art

""but the weirdest thing is that russian citizens lives on both side of the frontier, in Gerogia,Russia,Ossetia south and Abkhazia…""

that’s not surprising. Stalin (who was born in Georgia) incorporated all the regions into Georgia and Georgia was part of the Soviet Empire. It was only natural that many Russian moved to these regions and they stayed there after Georgia became independent in the 90s.
But now Ossetia and Abkhazia want to be independent from Georgia. Russia supports that and Georgia (and the US and the EU) know very well that these independent countries would be very Russian-friendly. That’s why there’s lots of trouble.

This might be of interest (from last November)

And these sick bastards that perpetuate this war are sitting pretty in their nicely decorated war rooms with air conditoning and fine foods while all these men are fighting and killing innocent people. It's all just some video game to them, where they have no chance of getting killed or harmed. They should all be made to stand on the front line if they start the war. I guarantee you, war would end tomorrow if these cowards actually had to fight it themselves. You worthless, vicious cowards!

Annie, I hope you heal properly and soon!

I pretty much agree with you about war and violence, but I think it's inaccurate to place all the blame on governmental leaders. They are often guilty, but sadly, it is often average people who support such aggression and/or retaliation, or who allow it to proceed through sheer laziness or lack of concern, or who fail to act towards ending it. We all have a responsibility to prevent war and militarism and to stop that which has already started. To blame leaders only goes so far, and however accurate that blame might be, it doesn't recongize our universal responsibility to each other as human beings. Blaming governments can also lead citizens to learn helplessness, if one isn't careful. We are powerful, even if it sometimes doesn't look or feel that way. We can end war if we want to, and not only that, I would say that we must.

Thast very nice thinking Paul and Little sun,but people even if they are MANY don't have the Power, just look at America and the Iraq war,can somebody stop it?NO

Russia and Gerogia are in a very tense situation, very mitlitarize goverment, so do people over there have the power of decition, I seriuosly doubt it, even here on the most liberal country of the world, democracy, blah, blah ,supported 2 unfair wars.

Peace marchs and so on are just good wishful thinking, but not till there is referendum or senate or congrese pass a law,the ocupation of Afganisthan and Iraq will continue uncontested.

"just look at America and the Iraq war,can somebody stop it? NO"

I respectfully disagree. America can be made to leave Iraq if enough people want it to stop and act to make it stop. At a certain point, certainly after 5+ years in Iraq, the blame spreads to those who watch it happen and do nothing out of sheer laziness--and there are certainly millions of Americans (and non-Americans) who sadly qualify. Too few people want to do the work. By "acting," I mean much more than marching. I mean actually getting involved in politics and informing yourself and supporting new candidates and challengers even to elected officials you once may have liked. (What do you think happened to Sen. Clinton in the primary? She was a victim of a groundswell she didn't see coming.) Acting also means sharing your beliefs and desire for change with your friends and neighbors and inviting them to become involved too, despite how uncomfortable or hard that might be. Acting also means contacting politicians, donating money and/or time, and aligning yourself with groups who already have power so that you can magnify that with greater numbers. Politicians pay attention to the size of issue advocacy groups because they see votes there. Acting means not spending money at companies that you know support policies you disagree with (if possible). Bottom line, I believe that it is our responsibility to do more than merely voting and there is so much we can do. Voting is the bare minimum--and too many Americans merely vote and then wash their hands of all responsibility after an election. This is essentially forfeiting your power to the few who control the system.

There have been plentiful opportunities to stop this war, and people dropped the ball. We dropped the ball. Either that, or we have tried and failed. That doesn't mean you stop trying. It's true that American citizens have been unsuccessful in getting their leaders to get out of Iraq--so far. To me, that says only that not enough people wanted this bad enough.

I see what you're saying, and there's some truth in it, but all that says to me is that millions in the streets is insufficient by itself. Despite Herculean efforts, more must be done. Peace marches aren't a panacea.

Think of it this way: if we want to change policies, we all must become about political activism like Michael Phelps is about swimming. We must do more, more, more and become better, better, better at it. Despite how easy it is to become despondent, the only real hope we have is the opposite. We must become hopeful and courageous, because it's the only thing that has a chance of working. Heck--isn't this exactly what Annie Lennox has shown us?

Every once in a while, throughout patriarchal history, the combined will of the people has indeed reached a certain critical point where the people have said to their leaders, no matter how oppressive: "No more".

But, for a very long time in most places, just enough crumbs and dissension between us have been very carefully tossed to keep us from remembering that at any moment, we could indeed all come together and say, "No more".

You speak of referendums in the US legislatures, I assume. Again, until we come together as a people here in the US and all say, "No more", yes, those in "power" will continue to do as they please.

But whatever corner of the world we live in, until people feel just uncomfortable enough... until they stop falling for "divide and conquer" tactics which keep us too busy hating one another to see what's really happening to all of us, you're right, such united action will remain wishful thinking.

Does it absolve us of responsibility that we're not yet all uncomfortable enough or too distracted by infighting? I don't think so...

I'm with you about your thought and feelings about war and violence in general. It seems that the human race did not lear a single thing from its past. And what's worse is that it seems all the live that have been cancelles during the countless wars all over the world have just been spoiled, for nothing ...at least I hoped that the massacres of the past could have served as a lesson , but it seems it's not like this....
I don't' know... I have strange feeling in these last couple of years... I have the feeling that we are going back instead to go forwards....I have the feeling that this is the medieval time of the 2000.....and that's not a good feeling. Am i losing my hope?!

Annie,
So sorry about your back. Back pain is the worst, I've had it twice and I was miserable. I'm sure that your Dr., will get to the root of the problem.
I agree with you on the war. Our great President did the same thing in Iraq. Thousands of innocent men, women and children killed... for what? Bush and Putin are in the same category. They think with their @@@@@@ and not their brains, wait did I say brains, they don't have brains.
Just spouting off.

Oh- that MUST be sooooo unbearable for YOU, who is so overwhelmingly independent and almost always in perpetual motion. Aaaargh, indeed (loving the pirate reference!). There's not enough letters in this limiting communication style of typing to convey empathy- and it "feels" extremely frustrating and lame to type, "I am sorry- and truly hope your difficulties will be sorted out soon, with a positive outcome.". BUT.. I AM, and.. I really DO. By the way?? QUIT viewing the news!!! STOP subjecting yourself to the horrors and tragedies.. at least for.. oh, I dunno.. like 6.357 seconds??? *sigh* YES, this IS horribly sickening. My recommendation and "cure", if I were to "be a world leader" would be to settle disagreements with words. NOT weapons. I suppose then, WOMD (guns, bullets, toxins, etc.) would be rendered obsolete, and people could be set to work manufacturing.. oh, I dunno.. lovely glass beads, and fuzzy pink bunny slippers. : ) Say, since you find yourself laying about, I have an awesome task, if you're up for the challenge. My lovely cat knocked to the floor a HUGE assortment of beads and gemstones (they WERE in separate containers!!)- of all colours, shapes and sizes imaginable. *snickering* I'll even toss in a needle and string for ya. AND the cat, of course.

Get well soon Annie, I don't know what to say with regards to Georgia, it breaks my heart when I switch on the news, all the suffering in the world is like a living hell and we seem powerless to do anything about it no matter how hard we try.

Wow, Annie...that second paragraph was extremely powerful and I am humbled to be given the chance to read your words in this form...Up until today I have only followed what you had to say in your music...most recently, yesterday. I love you!

Gosh Annie, I feel so bad for you. At least you have a sense of humor to go along with your pain and morale outrage. Balance IS important. As is keeping your head out of the sand, however, I really don’t think all this worldly negativity is good for your back.

I’ve never been in a war or anything close to it. One of my life’s ponderings is how do we as individuals end up living in our particular place of circumstances? I saw Dali’s comment above and it must feel incredibly unfair to the people living in Georgia. I’m very fortunate (for the time being) that my soul landed where it did. But why is that? There are some theories that we choose our life based on the lesson we want to learn. That’s a tough one to swallow when thinking of all the people living in poverty and war torn regions. What are your thoughts on this?

Also, I was thinking this might be a good time for you to learn sign language. Here’s a helpful link if you are interested: http://www.deafblind.com/worldsig.html

A great sign language site indeed, Alexis. However, I would like to add a particular sign that I didn't see in any of the sites mentioned. Apparently its universal and signifies what psychotic murderous morons should do to themselves...

Little finger, ring finger and index finger folded against the palm, held down by thumb. Middle finger is straight up in the air. With palm toward face hand is lifted toward psychotic morons. Use any hand, or both hands to bring the message across more effectively. ;)

Ugh, I hate typos. Oh well...“moral” not morale...your morale seems pretty darn good considering...keep thinking those positive affirmations for a healthy back!

I don't think we've seen Pirate Annie before--who knows what that could lead to?
Cheers to you and wishing you're on a swift mend.

Annie in a wheelchair. Yikes!!! I'm glad you got an MRI, and I hope the doctors come up with a treatment plan immediately!!! (Although the image of the pirate costume DOES sound fun. Good on ya -- to find a way to make a joke out of something that must be painful and annoying.)

War IS legalized murder. And the news from Georgia is horrifying. As well as the news from Iraq. Zimbabwe. Ok, and now I think I'll do what these warmongers want all of America to do, just for a few minutes: I'll go turn on the Olympics, see if we've won any more gold medals.

<sigh>

Sending best wishes your way. Get better SOON.
