Well..the recent "western" world economic events have left everyone with that feeling of queasy uncertainty...coupled with the countdown to the US elections, these are wobbly times on this side of the bed indeed. I'm not a US citizen, but I can tell you that people are watching this campaign with baited breath all around the world. I've said my piece about Sarah Palin..no need to repeat. America is a divided country...those who "get" the bigger picture, and those who don't. Those who get suckered in by a neat hairstyle and a folksy wink, and those who realise that you have to have a bit more "substance" to be a world leader....Or do you????
It's down to the citizens to make the choice..This is where democracy gets scary, because the "majority" don't always know what's best.
I was living in a basement flat in Notting Hill in the early seventies, and then Dave and I lived in Crouch End through the recession years. Every second shop on the Broadway was to let, or was being used for charity. Those were edgy times.. We always thought we were heading towards the apocalypse...and we weren't too far off course. The Cold War, the Berlin Wall, The Iron Curtain, the nuclear arms race...the whole shebang was right there and then.
I was thinking about the ancient "yin yang" symbol today...and it really is so perfect. One half of the sphere is black/ the shadow/negative/masculine/ and the other is white/light/positive/ feminine. That's the condition of life...always...polarised opposites in co existence. That's how we are on the inside, and that's what's happening on the outside too. It's just a question of where the "balance/harmony" lies. That's why my songs are always drawn to the major/minor mix...That's what "blues" is all about...Exquisite pain and sorrow..co existing with beauty and truth.
That's what the deep core of "soul" music is all about. Nuff said.

the worst bit is if you have yin/yang inside your head and you can't make a decison about what's right/wrong.

Well, I have heard the bs from both sides. I don't buy into anything very easily, Annie. But I WILL be voting for John & Sarah. My reasoning is purely scientific & mathematical. I cannot vote for somebody who believes that abortion is a right and is not immoral. It is IMMORAL. I cannot vote for somebody who is undergoing investigation for voter fraud. I cannot vote for someone who has terrorist ties and prejudice friends. I will NOT vote against freedom. I'm not talking about freedom to be able to decide whether an unborn child should be terminated. I am talking about freedom for the unborn child. I am talking about freedom that I and many soldiers are prepared to die for. Freedom to LIVE. Freedom for our children and goodness. Freedom for mankind. Freedom from tyranny. Freedom from terrorists. Freedom from abortionists. Freedom from evil. Freedom that can be called American. Under God. Freedom that George Washington would be proud of. Freedom that Jesus Christ would demand. Freedom that I will demand as well, as an American.

You have stated your case against Sarah Palin. You have your fame and fortune. Me? I will DIE just to save one child. I will lay it all down. Sacrifice all that I have. I will die for your child. I will die for goodness sake. I AM an american. A real American. John McCain & Sarah Palin stand behind me and honor me. Obama will dishonor me and our country. He says that the entire Iraq war is a mistake. So my friends are dying for nothing? Though they save lives and build homes everyday? Though they feed millions? Though they have SAVED IRAQI LIVES? IF you value what American soldiers do, you will NOT vote for Obama this year.

p.s. Didn't mean to reply to you Kitty. My reply is for Annie but meant for everyone to read and consider.

"My reasoning is purely scientific & mathematical. I cannot vote for somebody who believes that abortion is a right and is not immoral. It is IMMORAL."

It never ceases to AMAZE me how hypocritical people who vote the so-called "pro-life" Republican ticket always show themselves to be. I think it's "IMMORAL" to force a woman to carry a child to full term against her own wishes -- not to mention a violation of her FREEDOM! Also -- and I'm speaking this from an African-American perspective -- but you pro-lifers don't tend to align yourselves with an ideology that improves the QUALITY OF LIFE for children once they're HERE! You do your best to

* Oppose Universal Healthcare Initiatives that would bring affordable healthcare to all U.S. children. (Remember Bush vetoed S-CHIP and McCain is sticking to all of Bush's policy positions)

* Oppose educational initiatives that would improve learning and lives of all children. You only seem to care about giving the children of the wealthy a better life (generally speaking). They get all the tax cuts while the children of poorer parents have all manner inequality in educational preparedness.

You say you care about "FREEDOM TO LIVE" -- what if a pregnancy threatens the life of the woman carrying the child?! Does it make sense for her to die?! I think NOT! And a woman that has been the victim of a rape has already had her freedom and life violated -- she should not have to carry a child to term against her wishes.

"I cannot vote for somebody who is undergoing investigation for voter fraud"

That's funny -- I suspect you voted for George W. Bush years ago, and he was put into office at least ONCE against the will of a majority of Americans. And thousands of people -- mainly African-Americans -- had their names purged from voter lists to ensure they couldn't vote -- and the rest is history. I doubt you were so solicitous THEN -- and McCain and the GOP are now trying to cry foul because the election isn't going their way! Talk about hypocritical?!

"I AM an american. A real American. John McCain & Sarah Palin stand behind me and honor me. Obama will dishonor me and our country. He says that the entire Iraq war is a mistake"

And Barack Obama ISN'T a "real American"? Please explain your statement, because I suspect your reasoning has to do with the fact that he is African-American and has a middle name that you don't like. Prove me wrong! Obama will dishonor "our" country and soldiers more than an pre-emptive war fought on false pretenses as Pres. Bush has? Please explain how....

The war -- and all the senseless death that has ensued -- on the false pretenses of WMDs and a thus-proven false association between Sadam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden does indeed make the war and death on BOTH sides -- a MISTAKE (an understatement).

You really need to learn to deal in FACTS and not EMOTION.

What Would Jesus Do? Seek peace and FREEDOM through PEACE and UNDERSTANDING!

Right, Kimber... Sincerely wish that all the other recordings and eye witnesses at "that" rally and others were all lies... And that Palin's people weren't now trying to keep reporters from, not only interviewing her, but the people at her rallies also ;)

Adam, always thrilled to hear from a man who thinks he has a right to an opinion about what choices any woman makes about her own body! Bet you'd love it if we started pushing for laws where we got to make choices about your testicles. Not really even remotely comparable in terms of all the ramifications for a woman, (though I doubt you'd see it that way) but I'm betting you'd suddenly start to believe in the Right to Privacy that Roe vs. Wade is based on!

If any war was a mistake, which I firmly believe Iraq was--as apparently do tens of thousands of Iraqi's currently protesting the U.S. occupation (um, you might need to tune away from FOX to hear about that)--you'd prefer a politician who refused to admit that the war was a mistake and cause more U.S. casualties (and others)?

You might want to considering having a little talk with yourself about these pesky little facts, Adam: Obama has gotten more donations from active military and veterans than McCain has. Why? Check into the truth about their ratings with all the major veterans groups and why with one, Obama got a B+ and McCain a D; another gave Obama 80% and McCain 20%. A little something to do with McCain continuously voting against adequate funding for veteran health care, voting against the new GI bill, and, and, and....

I COMPLETELY agree with you! Thank The Lord that there are people like us still around that are willing to stand-up and scream above the cround for what we believe in. Thank you for all of the time that you and all your fellow soldiers have devoted to defending our country! My best friend was in Iraq twice, and in Afghanistan once. I am proud to be able to say that I have soldiers that are near and dear to me, my husband, and my children! Without people lke you guys, my children would be growing up in a different world. It is now up to us to make sure that our grand-children grow-up with the same rights, freedoms, and opportuniteis that we did!

So true, so beautifully said. And so sad is this world of ours sometimes. I added the "yin yang" symbol some days ago as my Skype picture, because it is so very true as you said and I was talking with my Asian friends, who understand that in much deeper way than I do. But I love the perfection as the result of so opposite elements.

The importance of voting is now higher than ever. Some people say that politics is useless, that voting does not change anything etc. The very same people are also often blaming "the society", "the global corporations" and "the governments" about the crisis, wars and conflicts. But as all of them are anyway operating based on organizations build by human beings and individuals, I say there is not an easier way to influence than voting. The leaders of the world we need are definately much more skilled and have wider views than Sarah Palin in her pathetic small world.

Hi Annie,
As usual, you've said it very well indeed. I'm not sure we here in the US will "get it" right this time out or not; I do know our economy can't take the blow of another four years with a Republican ran administration though.
The latest polls look good for Obama but there's the nagging doubt...will people really vote for him on Nov. 4? Do people really want change or are we terrified of it? I, for one, will be voting for Barack Obama and proudly so! We need a leader who better understands what it means to be Middle class or working class; we're the grease making this giant machine turn...and we need a better shift manager than we've had!!

All the best to you,
Clem :)

So you really think this is the fault of POOR people? Are you seriously that uneducated about the process? FOX News hasn't provided a better answer for you yet?

If I make you a loan and I set an interest rate of 5% and then your job gets outsourced to India because the Bush administration gave away all the IT jobs, that's not the fault of poor people.

If you buy a house and you pay your mortgage just fine and then your daughter has a car accident and you have $30,000 in medical bills adn can't pay the mortgage. that's not the fault of poor people either.

If the bank raise your adjustable interest rate from 5% to 9% and your payment goes up $400 a month because if it, that's not the fault of poor people.

You have really got to get out there and read more.

""I am against Socialism""

Kimberly, you cracked me up. Socialists from all corners of the world have been pleading for a nationalisation of the banking sector for years. They must be very happy to see that the leaders of US and UK (and other countries) make their dream come true. Funny, the last leader of East Germany Erich Honecker once said:
"Den Sozialismus in seinem Lauf halten weder Ochs noch Esel auf" (which means "Neither an ox nor a donkey is able to stop the progress of socialism”)

Seriously, the current events and the trillions of wasted money and our leaders who turn from lame ducks into heroes overnight make me vomit. Hopefully, they will help the new homeless people too

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iLBIM860ys&feature=related

Capitalism is dead. A few days ago I learned that when East Germany was declared bankrupt in 1989 its foreign indebtedness was 9 billion (in euros now). I guess today we are more bankrupt than Communism/Socialism ever was. I will spend my little money on something nice before it’s too late and all the money becomes rubbish.

Kim, you might want to consider doing some serious research about the economy before assigning "blame" or exonerating the Republican economists... Perhaps learn a little about de-regulation and the whole pyramid scheme built upon the mortgage industry, how mortgages were sold and re-sold and certain kinds of "bets" made by many quarters of the financial industry... It's quite complicated--even many in the financial industry don't seem to fully understand certain rather vast aspects of it that seem to be based on more fake money than the world actually contains. It's quite astounding.

It would also seem there's a great deal of "blame" to go around. Democrats have, indeed, participated in creating this mess. However, the current serious issues we face would appear to be strong proof of the failure of the de-regulation and "trickle-down" (otherwise known as piss-on-the-lower-classes) economic philosophies embraced by most Republicans since Reagan. And embraced by McCain. You might also want to consider learning more about what socialism actually is and how Bush's bailout might be viewed in relation to socialism.

Folks below: This kind of response to others' viewpoints is something I find very sad. It only perpuates and solidifies divisiveness. If we are all yelling at one another, no one can hear.

I am so glad you realize that! Many times when I read your writings I think "Well...she's been here (USA) so many times, I HOPE she doesn't think we're all like that!" We ARE very divided here. I live in Los Angeles, and so I guess we're in a bit of a bubble. We ASSUME everyone else WANTS to think like us, to move ahead, be progressive, etc, when in reality, the aryan pride, believing-every-single-word-of-the-Bible, conservative clan, is very content in thier way of thinking. When they make reference to Ronald Reagan as some kind of hero, I CRINGE! I think, "OK...AIDS, 28 years later." He felt it was a "sex disease" of blacks and gays. So he ignored it, as did George Bush Sr. Reagan was NO hero.

A massive majority of the center of my own country believes in guns, war, that "Obama is a terrorist", keep "the gays" away from our children, and that Palin is "great" etc. Have you seen the photo of pro-life Palin smilng next to a moose she had just shot with it's GUTS all over the place? I'm not sure who's the greatest coward right now -- Bush or McCain. Bush because of all the lies that brought us into this horrific war, for all the graft that brought us to this economic destruction -- or McCain who is willing to race-bait and incite others to violence in order to win an election and who picked the most insidious and incompetent person to be his running mate.

Everyone's stress levels are way up. I don't know how we're going to pay for things in the future. We don't have jobs anymore and we don't have any stable systems to work within.

Being a POW is not a qualification for President and it doesn't make one brave. And certainly someone who acted brave once can be a coward the next day. I think it's Cowardly that he won't call Obama a terrorist to his face. I think it's cowardly to pump your crowds into a frenzy of "kill him" and "Shoot Him" on purpose. I think it's cowardly to say you're not doing to take the low road to the highest office in the land and then pull out every sleezy, dirty trick possible when you lose.

And he is race baiting. It's not propaganda. We see it every day in his ads and his campaign speeches. You can call it propaganda if the news says it's happening. You can't call it that if you see it coming out of the person's mouth.

The McCain campaign has INDEED race-baited! The whole "Obama is a Muslim" -- which is both a false and bigoted assumption -- has been played up by the McCain camp by way of Sarah Palin. Palin added fuel to this by saying that Obama "pals around with" terrorists.

For one thing, Obama ISN'T a Muslim, and Palin and McCain's reinforcement of this plays into a lot of bad stereotypes. Also -- Muslims aren't all terrorists are prone to it and aren't necessarily anti-American -- like YOU are showing yourself to be in baseless accusations.

"Obama was forced to wear a lapel pin, wouldn't participate correctly in the Star Spangled banner."

A flag lapel pin no more makes a person "American" or "patriotic" than a wearing a "WWJD", or "What Would Jesus Do" makes a person a Christian.

If you like the McCain/Palin ticket -- FINE -- but don't make yourself look ridiculously uninformed -- an understatement -- with unsubstantiated claims.

Many of the electronic voting machines (made by diebold a military contractor) have been tossed out in many states and many people have switched to absentee paper ballots, which if the election is close, will be counted and you can bet the majority of those are dem's. If people could realize and stop for a moment that they are alive and they have much to live for they might be able to change events in the future. Most live in a state of motion that insist upon doing what we are told and are given roles even before they are born.

If you look at the ying and yang you will see a center and realize that they are a reflection of one another in purity. If you meditate long enough upon the symbol you will note they embrace one another until you can’t tell which one is the start or the end and understand all reflects in our actions. It is a dark time “ I know I have felt it and it has affected me” and we are held captive in our cages by choice.
It goes deeper never higher. We can’t deny one side of the other.

This is why some of the darkest people can come in the name of light and darkness can hide the innocent so not to be seen. We must be more then just human to understand. Transcendence means nothing if you have nothing to transcend too.
Note also we move in harmony the example we give out will also reflect in the other people around us.

Take care
Tom

Things ARE getting bad here in America. Pres Bush was asleep at the wheel and did little or nothing about the financial crisis which has been looming for over a year. Unfortunately this has also BADLY affected the entire worlds economy. The only good to come of it has been to badly damage McCain and the Republican party badly in the polls that the only way he could win is to steal the election.
Palin was a desperate attempt to lure women and the fundamentalist right to the republican party. So far it hasn't worked. Women were interested in Palin in for a few days and thats about it. She has had some ethical problems as the Governor of Alaska and has very little political experience. The pig in lipstick comments still crack me up... :)

You can't have light without darkness. The eternal flow of the Tao. Yin and Yang. We've been in a period of darkness for 8 years. Now it's time for the light. Maybe I am reading too much into this...but how cool is it that Obama is half black and half white? Like the ancient Chinese symbol of Yin & Yang, we need to restore balance. We need Obama. :-)

Well said Annie - we are living in seriously troubling times but the American people have an amazing opportunity to make things happen, to change and undo the last 8 years and stand up for what is right !!! Globally we are on our knees (and not in a good way !!) and we have such little time .. but there is still time to make a difference ... we need to change, adapt and grown as a nation. We need to ensure that Obama gets elected, tell your friends, tell them to tell their friends ... get out and vote !!! Make it happen !!!

Perfectly written!!!!! I admire you for first and foremost writting this blog and second saying that America is divided and I don't think we will all get the picture at the same time...as for Palin.....ahhhh who the hell is she?...........I still believe we should have had Hillary

Well put Annie!

Have you seen the SNL skits with Tina Fey as Sarah Palin...funny stuff! I think that you would enjoy them. Especially the one where she and Amy Poehler portray Palin and Hillary..

Yes here in America the times according to the media are growing bleak...

Nothing like watching my 401k drop by half over the last year...it makes me want to turn our base floor into a stock house full of stapled materials...

I have never been so proud/shamed to part of this idea of a free country as I am today... It seems inconceivable, another eight years of this crap. I believe that I "get" it now, and thanks: it's good to know there are others on this particular side of the bed.
