At the end of this week I’m actually going to take a HOLIDAY! The first in a long while. I don’t know whether to bring my laptop, or whether I should try to wean myself away from it for a little while.
In any case...Just because I know you’ll miss me( you will won’t you??!!) I’m going to prepare some postings in advance, because I wouldn’t want you to pine in my absence....
Coming back from Paris yesterday on the good old Eurostar, I had a little bit of downtime to clear some space and delete old emails...hundreds of them! It gave me the chance to realise just how much work goes on...and it was kind of staggering really. Even just ONE event takes so much time and effort to set up...so much planning, with countless phone calls, e mails texts and arrangements.
Looking back, I can hardly catch up with myself!
In any case....we are all like little ants...going about the busyness of our lives in our own individual and collective ways. Ultimately we are all interconnected, and if one thing shifts, we all feel the effect in one way or another. It’s always interesting to watch the latest developments...A few days ago the G20 leaders ( head ants!) gathered here in London. In a few hours, they discussed global finance, apparently looking to find solutions, or ways through the economic crisis. The issue is SO vast, and so complex, and it runs far deeper than mere currency. I personally believe that the entire ( financial ecological ethical social industrial ) system needs a desperate emergency overhaul...the whole way we exist on the planet, otherwise survival is unsustainable. We’ve been so out of kilter with the natural balance of things for so long. Indigenous people have always respected and revered nature. Even if, as human beings, they might have territorial/fights fights, the great source/provider was never abused or squandered.
Modern society has a lot to answer for...in all kinds of ways. Will the head ants manage to become collectively intelligent/cooperative/wise/visionary??? Your guess is as good as mine.

Have a wonderful relaxing holiday break. You definitely deserve it! To truly get a break, you should probably leave your laptop behind, but I know I couldn't.

Enjoy, and we will be here upon your return.

Enjoy your holiday, it is well deserved. And yes, I will miss you but it will be nice to know you are taking care of yourself for a change.

The only problem with the head ants you mention is that they are not as intelligent and organised as the insect ants!

Have a great time,

The head ants are sadly not doing too much to change things. Sometimes it just seems that our leaders are mired in a hopelessly corrupt system and happy with the status quo.

Of course I will miss you!!! But goodness, you definitely need a break! Relax, enjoy, and sleep late (if you can ;] )!

Hopefully before it is all too late, our leaders in government will become aware of just how desperate our situation is. Wasn't it George Michael who said, "You gotta have faith"? Smart man... :)

Of course we will miss you but how wonderful that you can squeeze in a holiday. It is very sweet and responsible of you to get a pet sitter before you go. Not only will your peeps feel loved but The House will be in much better order when you return. Finding a few bobbles knocked over and down pillows in odd places is certainly better than us brooding over your disappearance.

Your analogy of ants is quite good and true but did you know it is very common for a swarm of small ants to attack and devour an ant that has grown large and sluggish from his selfish over indulgence? I completely agree that we are all interconnected. Do you ever notice small details in the sequence of time, such as driving down the road and a butterfly narrowly misses your windshield? What kept you from being 1 second further down that road? Just now typing on your blog is changing the course of my day.
Perhaps another butterfly will be saved!!

Have a fun time wherever you are vacationing.
You deserve it!

Well said Annie.
I just read from Sebastian Copeland's (whose expedition is by the way very interesting, visit at myspace.com/sebastiancopeland) blog about the inuits and the effects of environmental damage done far away from them but causing serious problems in the Artic area. It makes me anxious to really admit that inconvenient truth again..

I love your idea of the ants and especially the head ants :D They have a huge concept to deal with, so why not to join as one ant trying to carry her straw.
Enjoy your holiday, we will miss you :)

Good for you Annie!!! I hope you are going someplace relaxing with lots of privacy. Maybe for a worldly person such as yourself that might mean your own home.
You didn't ask, I hardly ever offer

unsolicitated advice, I'd try to to stay off your laptop as much as possible. Perhaps bring it along though, wouldn't want you having a seizure because you did not have access to it. *LOL* I wrote to a friend recently how I was trying to wean myself off myspace, but I did spell wean wrong, didn't check my dictionary the time. I spelled it ween.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday. I want to tell you I have always admired how you were willing to risk your career and take many years off to be with your daughters. I hope they are going to be spending a lot of time with you.

Always wishing you the best, Brenda

Leave the laptop at home; relax and enjoy your holiday. Yes, I and all yo' peeps will miss you but its good to hear that you are taking a break.

The G20 summit might produce some good results. America was able to send an intelligent ant this time. It looks like people are starting to wake up to how unsutainable our lifestyles are. This current economic crisis is so deep it cant be ignored. Its like people woke up out of a dream and realized there was a pink elephant in their living room.

We ARE interconnected and our actions have a much greater impact on each other than most people want to admit. If we step up to the plate and do something to make the world a better place because what we do does make a difference. Ok..... Im off the soapbox now...Have a great Holiday

I guess we can only hope these G20 leaders turn the talking into some postive action and stick to their word.

Thing is some"head ants"within the UK politcal system dont exactly fill me with a lot of confidence. The inquiry into reforming the system of MPs' pay and expenses is long overdue for me.I mean with some of them its like do as we say and not as we do.Its one rule for them and another rule for others.

Oh im having a little rant now! lol

Good blog, Annie! Have a nice Holiday...and YES I'll miss you even if we are connected only by cyberspace. Have a nice break...you deserve it!! I will get a few days off soon from teaching for Spring Break...and I'm looking forward to it. Bring your laptop or you will go into a techno coma (withdraw from the computer addiction ha ha).

In terms of the G20...the head ants don't know what they are doing and can't agree. We are all doomed IMO...play the video game Fall Out 3 and see what I mean about the future. I just don't trust the government to come up with the solutions or to have the collective will to address the problems we all face. We truly are all inter-connected and we all live in one home... Earth. With North Korea shooting off missiles and Iran getting a bomb and the whole world having unsustainable debt and the squandering of natural resources.... I don't see an easy way out.

I think I'll go for a long walk in the woods to center myself. Sometimes you need a break from the real modern world for awhile!! Listen to the birds sing and see the flowers starting to bloom.
Have a nice Holiday and Happy Easter!!! SueNY :)

i'm not surprised that you're taking a break!!! and of course we will miss you terribly!!! its funny( not ha ha ) but funny none the less that so many powerful people( ants as you say) should have come to 'our' tiny island to discuss the current problems ... i don't honestly believe that they will have come with any long standing solution(s) to the problems we're facing ...

why do i think that? well because i believe that they will have been looking at short term fixes to said problems rather than looking outside of the box... in my own humble opion the way we live in the west( and increasingly accross the globe) is based on greed/ aquisition of wealth and 'things' most of which we don't need,( capatilism) thoughout recent history has proved to be unworkable and unreliable as a way of life , but if you speak to 'joe blogs' questioning the way we live and pointing this out, it seems that no one can see beyond this way of life... to most people if we're not living in a capitalist society then the only alternative in their eyes seems to be communism... i feel that there must be a realistic alternative to the boom and bust way we currently live and i dont believe that the only other way is communism but not being in a position of power and having hung up my wings and wand i dont have a magic solution to these ongoing problems, but i do believe that mp's/ politicians are paid sooo much money ( and need to do something to justify even a tiny % of it) that if they truly wanted to come up with a better way of life that was better for us a a race/ culture the planet and so on, they could , but they too are blinkered, and tied to what they know!! and considering the recent revelations about £ claimed for add homes etc they appear to be not overly bothered about spending 'our' money for their own gains.

there are a lot of good things about the modern world and an awfull lot of bad;, for every step forward we make we seem to step ten ( or more) back... and if you look at the way some countries/ races live, i can't ever see us being able to get away from this mess, it would help if we were all singing from the same hymn sheet and that the western world wasn't looked on with distrust/ hate by a lot of lesser of cultures but we seem ever destined to be seen this way, until mankind can learn to live with one another regardless of race/ creed/ skin colour/ beliefs/ sexuality and so on i'm not holding my breath in anticipation that 'things' will improve( well not in my lifetime)

Enjoy your time off and if you can, I think you should leave the laptop at home so you can really just be with YOU. Maybe you could take a small dictaphone in your handbag for those moments to record what you might want to write about later and perhaps share them with the peeps upon your return.

As far as the giant colony of ants we call our world, I dont see instant light at the end of the ant tunnel but the energy is indeed shifting around the little workers and their hope for peace and positive change is indeed getting stronger. As the song goes.

"Just what makes that little old ant
Think hell move that rubber tree plant
Anyone knows an ant, cant
Move a rubber tree plant

But hes got high hopes, hes got high hopes
Hes got high apple pie, in the sky hopes

So any time your gettin low
stead of lettin go
Just remember that ant
Oops there goes another rubber tree plant"

Bon voyage

Some of the head ants deserve praise, working in teams while carrying food back to the nest. They lift some 5 to 25 times their body weight in the process. Other head ants just go around and around in circles, only creating an illusion of hard work and bringing nothing to the table.

Did you know there is a species of ants identified as "crazy ants"? They are so called because of their rapid and erratic movements and difficulty in controlling. (Sounds like one crazy ant we know from North Korea).

So cool of you to prepare some postings in advance. You also sent a shout out to the peeps during the St. Luke's concert.....FANTASTIC! Keep banging the drum!!! You are at the top of your game....simply in your prime. Your interpretations of all these amazing songs along with your stronger-than-ever voice created this performance on film I believe is your strongest ever.

Really glad to hear that you are taking a holiday Annie as I am sure it is badly needed !!!! While I have to admit that I am rather addicted to my laptop, if you have the opportunity to be laptop free for a few days, grab it !!!!

The G20 summit has the potential to achieve so much but I worry that there are some very bullish "Ants" in the pack that do not always see the wood for the trees !!! There is so much that needs to be done but as Cathy said, it's like they have not even noticed the Pink Elephant in the room !!! We need more than an overhaul ...... we need a miracle !!!!

Enjoy your holiday Annie and safe travels.

It certainly has been all systems go for you recently and for me holidays are about no constant news, no computers, except the odd internet cafe session, very little tv and loads of books.
Mind it depends how long one is going for!

The political ants of Britain should be hanging their heads in shame at the systematic abuse of their

"perks" from the gravy train at the taxpayers expense, when all I can see around me just now are massive local authority budget cuts when the plug will be pulled on some great work done by Projects put in place with a long term aim at improving society and from which results were becoming evident (eg nurturing classes in schools)

You mentioned 2012 in your previous blog and I think that it ties up with what you are talking about the world needing an overhaul. I truly believe that a new World enlightenment is a big possibility because it has to be. I don't see 2012 as the end of the world but the beginning of a new phase of human development.
The creativity of science will work hand in hand with the great truth and wisdom

which goes back to the Egyptian pyramids, the Maya in South America, the Native American Indians or indeed when Adam was a boy. The essential ying and the yang of the male and female is so wonderfully demonstrated by Barack and Michelle Obama who seem to stand side by side in more ways than one. The wonder of natural world will be high up on the agenda again because it will have to be.

On that note have a great holiday wherever you go..we are off on a weekend trip to Arran next month which took two hours to book because it is so busy due too a Wildlife Festival taking place there - so it should be a great atmosphere. I love the pace of life on Arran...

I so agree with you. There are 4 plus 16 court jesters. I can’t believe these 4 played our saviours right after they ruined the whole world. Oh, no, wait: the summit wasn’t about us ordinary people. It was about the new Messiah who climbed down from his holy mountain so that everybody can lick his boots.
