Saturday, August 30, 2008
As I toured all over the country this summer with True Colors, I saw something in the eyes of the audience I have not seen in a very long time, it was HOPE. Each night as I talked about the power of voting, it was evident through their reactions that the crowd wanted to change how this country is run. That is the one good thing that President Bush has done in the past seven years, he has created a movement within the country to change how things are done in Washington DC. But, what mattered to me the most is that everyone cared enough about their own lives and the future to register and vote.

I believe we are at a crossroads and the next ten years will determine the future of this country. Like I said from the stage, this is not voting for the American Idol, it is much more important, this is voting for the American President. And now that I'm home again, and off stage, I wonder, will we become the country that respects the diversity that is our backbone or will we continue down this path of the few ruling the many? I wonder to myself are we gonna make that change in a big way and when I think about it I believe that the change can happen in the form of Senator Barack Obama.

Because, America is a quilt of many fabulous fabrics and we have a sorted history that has not always respected that. And because, for far too long groups of people have been singled out and discriminated against simply because of such things as the color of their skin, their religious beliefs or whom they love. And, that these very acts undermine the basic principles this country was founded on, the time has come to finally break down the barriers that keep America from fulfilling its destiny.

In particular, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community is closer than ever to gaining full equality. We are teetering back and forth right now, and we need to act together to push us in the right direction. What we are asking for is only fair and right. We as a society, LGBT or straight, can show that civil rights are important and discrimination is wrong across the board through our vote. I believe by voting for Barack Obama we will do just that.

Like Obama, I grew up with a loving, hard-working single mom, in a neighborhood mixed with all races and different backgrounds. And like Obama, I knew that was our strength and not our weakness.

I see in Barack Obama a real fighter for fairness and inclusion, a person who overcame every obstacle growing up to achieve an education and to become the leader he is today. He battles against discrimination of all kinds, from race and gender to sexual orientation and gender identity. He is the most inclusive candidate who has a real chance at the White House that we ever have had. He is a true American who commands respect and more importantly respects Americans - all of us.

I believe that a President Obama would deliver on the promises that have been made to the LGBT community for so long, like inclusive workplace non-discrimination legislation, the end of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", and finally the passage of hate crimes legislation that includes everyone, not just some. It saddens me in ways I cannot begin to describe just to know that hate crimes still occur in our society. Under President Obama, the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act will finally become law.

When I talk to young people I believe the time has come. It reminds me of my generation in the 1960's who made a promise to make the world better. The young people today have dedicated themselves as well to this goal and have truly embraced change. They are working harder than ever to elect Barack Obama President because he is a voice of a new and more imaginative generation. They are hungry for new ways of thinking, and to put away old labels, fears, prejudices and bigotries. They believe you can change the world one person at a time. And so do I.

Simply look around, and talk to every young voter you meet, and then vote because you care what happens to them and you care what happens to the world and this country. We all deserve better.

Lastly, I implore you to share your lives with the people you love and care about. Your vote is powerful, but the work cannot end there. Americans are mostly fair-minded people, but are disconnected from the everyday struggles of your life. We are one society and if we are disconnected we fall, but connected we stand tall. If you want people to understand the reality of being LGBT in society today, you need to share your story.

If you are LGBT, share with them the discrimination you still face in America, and if you are a straight ally, share with them the discrimination you have seen inflicted upon your friends and family. Explain that discrimination not only affects the one it is directed towards, but it affects us all. Show through your example what LGBT people truly are like and break down the misconceptions and stereotypes that fuel the prejudices that have plagued our community and society for far too long.

I am an example of what can happen when you share your story. When my sister Elen came out to me and told me about her life, my eyes were opened to the fact that I needed to be a part of changing this country for the LGBT community and have taken that responsibility very seriously.

So, the time has come to stand up and use your voice. It is time that we push ourselves over the edge towards full equality. It is time that we have a President who will work for us and not against us.

All my best,
Cyndi Lauper

Wow thank you so much for your heartfelt words. I believe Mr Obama can also make a differance in this country. There was a wonderful article about him in the most recent issue of The Advocate and it really helped me decide that he is the one I want to vote for. The younger generations do not feel or believe the same things that a lot of the older generations do and it is time we had a President that reflected that. I can't wait to step into the voting both this fall and make a differance in my future.

Thanks for all that you have done and continue doing for the LBGT community, you have made a world of differance in our lives. Not only with your music but with your words and contining support to the community.

Thank you for all that you have done for the community! I wish I knew how to tell how my family is discriminated against, but it seems that no one where I live wants to hear it, or even try to make it better. Just this week my spouse and I felt the pressures of our life style. I had to have a simple surgery , and I didn't handle it very well. My spouse asked if she could have 2 days off work to take care of me, and was denied because we aren't married. Keep in mind we have been together for 7 years.

Belive me I WILL BE VOTING THIS YEAR!!!!

Sing it Sister!! Thanks for such an eloquent and insightful call to action. Hope is something that many Americans lost sight of for a while. I am glad to hear it is back in full force, and not a moment too soon! It is no secret where my vote will go this November. I sincerely hope that all of American takes the time to educate themselves about the issues at hand and what is at stake.
I welcome hope (and much needed change!!) Obama/Biden '08!!

Cyndi, you are a true gem! LUV U! Thanks for your kind and thoughtful words! I loved your appearance on ASWTurns,,,one of my Mom's fave shows, and I taped it and showed it to any of my friends that would sit still long enough to watch your amazing performance! I am really fond of your new cd, and it has truly inspired many, including myself! Even though you have been inspiring me since the early 80's! My second concert ever was U, with the Bangles opening for U in Roaonke, VA, '84, and that is where I connected with my first boyfriend, he was a Senior, I was a Junior in HSCHOOL!! YES,,u helped that to happen, I won't ever forget it! AND, one of my good friends, who became a DR.
and later died of a brain tumor, was the guy who snatched off your ankle bracelet, and you stopped the concert to give a lecture about taking things that don't belong to you and how rude that was, but hey he was a good guy, deep down inside, GOD rest his soul, he is hopefully in a better place now! I have friends from every spectrum of the community, gay/bi/straight/and TSG, they all react to your message! I have been fortunate enough to see you twice live, 2nd time was with CHER, in Greensboro, NC, hate to say it but you and your amazing band blew CHER away, no disrespect! And you truly ROCKED the house, even with your injury!! I wanted to be in DC for the TRUE COLORS show, but just wasn't able to make it, I know you rocked the Warner Theatre, the last time I was there was to see MCHO on her ASSASSIN tour, when it was filmed for DVD! Luv ya always, and to "quote my ex, GOD BLESS HIM, You make my loins ACHE!" Keep takin' us "Into the Nightlife", hope to hear some mixes of that soon! U GO GIRL! Christopher Manis

Paul J. Gorzkowski - Writer/Author
Paul J. Gorzkowski

I am way past the racial card that has plagued this world for decades. What my biggest concerns are, is finally reaching a portion in my lifetime where we all can live in a world without hatred. I blame the past eight years worth of crimes and hatred towards fellow lives on George W. Bush and his crusades he impelled on the United States during his terms as our President.

I don't care whether Obama is black, white or pink with purple polka dots. It's his attitude to resolve this country's issues that Bush has caused that I am concerned about. Yes, I am sure by my tone that you can tell how much hatred I have for our current president and if anyone in their right mind looks back at what we have been through over the past eight years, they would not have any problem with my attitude.

At this point, I dont care who becomes our next president, just as long as it is not another Bush or anyone who has his same point of views. Obama and McCain both have their good sides and bad sides but when you wrap it all together during these campaigns rallys, it's all promises made, promises broken.

Bush made those same promises during his campaign and totally changed his attitude once he entered that White House. I just thank God that I am not one of them who has to now hold their head down in shame because of voting for him. We just now have to put our faith and trust in who ever makes it in the 2008 decision will stick to their words and promises and give this country back what we have lost and missed over the past decade or so.

I will go ahead and say that after watching these campaign rallys and such, I am not impressed at the least. I will be voting this year to make my own stand but as it looks right now, I will not be voting for Obama or McCain. I am not saying in the near future that my decision will not change but as of right now, I will be voting for a write in, a gentleman named Bill Balsamico of Pennsylvania. He can be seen and heard on Youtube. com if you search his name.

Mr. Balsamico has got the attitude this country has needed for years! He puts his balls in first and doesn't care if anyone gets offended by them. He personally has lived the experience we all have lived and he knows exactly what this country needs to get through all this turmoil.

Cyndi, I have been a huge fan of yours since you first hit the spot light in the 1980's and I am sure you liked President Regan just as much as I and millions of others did out there at that time. Granted, Regan had his faults but he had done allot of good for the United States when during his terms. Think of Balsamico as Regan on his best side at least eight times better.

I met Balsamico through his website of signs he continued to post outside of his restaurant in Pennsylvania called, Casa D' Ice. You can Google the name of the restaurant to read some of his signs all of which spoke his peace for passerby's to see his opinion of what is going on in this country as well as Iraq and others.

I invite you Cyndi and others who read this to just give a few minutes to watch Balsamico's videos on Youtube as well as Google the name of his restaurant and read just a few of his signs.

I can almost promise you that you will be very impressed as well as it just might change your vote for our next president.

Thank you Cyndi for speaking out on your blog about how you feel about the candidates for our next president. And thank you for such a great life long worth of great music and entertainment. You have certainly made a huge imprint on my memories of the 80's through today..

Love you always!

Sincerely,

Paul J.

Dear Cyndi,

I am a straight female who has supported many friends and family members in their everyday struggles to be accepted by others. I am very optimistic Senator Obama will open the lines of opportunty to eveyone in this country and end the discrimination of a person because of who they love and are.

I have been fortunate enough to see you perform three times over the past two years and I speak about your support of the LGBT community to raise awareness to others and hope they, too, will become a suppoter and understand people need to love and support one another. Your True Colors tour has not only given me the opportunity to enjoy your amazing presence on stage, but I have opened several friends eyes to your message. I planned on seeing you at the HRC concert this week, but because I was traveling to attend this concert I realized I wanted to participate more than just one night in an auditorium. I spent two full days in the city listening to many different people speak and partaking in something I may never have the chance to do again.

I am thankful my parents let me listen to your music when I couldn't listen to Madonna and today I appreciate everything both of you are doing for this country and the world. You are in inspriration to many people of all ages and I am thankful the LGBT community has your support because many people will hear your message.

Thanks for all your work on behalf of LGBT people Cyndi. In the UK I know little about (and avoid) American politics, but I do know about being gay and the discrimination that still goes on in the 'free world'. One example - I will be in Gibraltar next week where discrimation against the LGBT community is not recognised in the same way as race etc, against European law. A lesbian couple there are fighting to be recognised as joint tenants on there council home. I then go onto Morocco where I certainly won't be shouting my sexuality from the rooftops. So, America as I'm sure you know is not on it's own. I hope if Obama can make a difference in America that he gets enough support, and will get things on the right track to help put an end to these extreme hate crimes. On a lighter note, I cannot WAIT to see you in the UK at Southampton! I hope you will include some of your amazing 'Shine' tracks (Higher Ground PLEASE!). Love and respect from across the waves.

I believe in free choice. I believe in hope. I believe also in things of divine sovereignity. But, I do not believe that the president is the one calling shots. He can do nothing more than the rest of the powers allow. Like the ornament on the top of a stave, there has to be something single for the people to look at. How would we feel if we were to have to surmise the total shaft of agencies, peoples, and ideals that must be aligned to make a single inch of change? We would feel very lost. It is easier to look at a singular, is it not? I believe in hope too. But, my hope is placed in God's hands, and works. Thank-you...

Well done! My partner and I have moved to Canada, almost a year now, where we are accepted as regular folk no matter where we go. I'm not sure if this is a Canadian thing, or perhaps a West Coast liberal point of view sort of thing. All I know is we are quite happy and content up north, even though it was a VERY difficult decision to make. Thank you for your untiring support of the LGBT community - if only we could get everyone to listen and understand.

I love this write up Cyndi. I live in Orlando, FL and I will vote for Barack Obama in 08! He is the perfect candidate to get us moving in the right direction so we don't have to put up with more of the same as the past bush admin years. I am very happy to see you, a major celebrity, continually supporting the GLBT community so strongly, and faithfully.

I love your new album, it's got such a nice variety and I am getting into the electro sound alot. Give it Up is one of my favorite new songs and can't wait for the next album to release whenever that is. You rock and always will in my book.

I saw you open for Cher a few years ago at Nationwide Arena (small venue, lol) when i was living in Columbus, OH--wow so much energy and such a powerful voice coming out of that body, it blew me away. I was like "Damn, she sounds better in person than on the cd's". When you did True Colors, I just got chills because I know alot of people struggle with their identities in growing up, especially those in the GLBT community.

I would love to meet you someday!

No one could have said it any better, Doll! I truly believe Barack Obama is the best thing that could ever happen to America/ns! Good on him, with the amount of Racist BS Flak himself and his family will receive. It's time to try and slap the IGNORANT from society once and for all! Of course we all know that'd never happen... but it's very hopeful things can improve and so will America as a whole! Here's to HOPING BIG that he'll get in!!

OMG this just made my WHOLE day!!!! I needed to read and hear something so good and powerful today to bring me up, and this blog post hit the spot!! I am so glad to see this surprise blog post from Cyndi. Not that it is a surprise reading something like this from her, but I mean it was a surprise to see something that could bring me up after a rough week, let alone summer....And I am glad it was Cyndi who was the one who could bring this to us and myself today. We sure have a lot of good things going on in our world today...and now we our really able to see more dreams come true than ever before....

We do live in a country, that should be able to be equal, and since this country was born, it was always made up of people who are not the same. That was what made our country different from day one...so it should be even more so easy to let us all live the way we see fit as equals in today's world as well.

We do have change coming, and I know the HOPE, that Cyndi is speaking of, and has seen is for real, since I have seen it as well. Not only from with in my own self, but from the people I know and are about in my life also. This is a great time to be alive for sure, we are leaving history in the making...I do get sad still to see how some still want to repress the nation y not wanting the good changes to be made..I know that those who do not want that change, are really just afraid, and perhaps uneducated about some things....But we need to be the change we want. Be the hero you would want to look up to. Tell your life stories, just as Cyndi has said, it is the one true power to make that change happen and at the same time it helps to educate those who are afraid of change and the things they are not sure about yet....I know this telling of stories very well, we all do, because we live the lives that are all so wonderfully full of those many multicolours in each of our own individual lives....

By sharing our stories, is indeed the best power that we have and can do so easily and freely, in some many ways. One of those ways of course is the blog world. And another is websites, make your voices heard, and keep telling your stories. And be sure to get out and vote!!! I do believe that Obama will help this country move back into the right path for a better future starting today...
