December 30, 2007 - Sunday

Category: News and Politics

I remain hopeful that Americans can still rouse themselves to save our democracy. But the time in which to head of financial and moral bankruptcy is growing short.

~ Chalmers Johnson

With the Democratic Congresses approval rating at an all time low, one must wonder, "What are they thinking?" If the Democrats were holding to any kind of democratic philosophy, their direction in government should be clear. The House Speaker herself has stated on many occasions that the Democrats were given a mandate in 2006…to end the Iraq occupation. We should all keep in mind that this mandate includes the cessation of spending like a bunch of drunken sailors on holiday leave.

Yet their contempt for "the will of the people" continues to stand. Americans are no better off than they were under a Republican held majority. These circumstances beg the question, are the Democrats cowardly or complicit? In order to answer this question one must only look to some of the driving forces behind the continued failed policy in Iraq, namely that of private American defense contractors. This particular industry has exploded in recent years, in not only profits, but also the power it wields in politics. During the 2006 election cycle, defense contributions (totaling 17, 923, 5552 dollars)  and lobbying efforts (over 40, 000, 000 dollars) has reached an all time high, this number shows a sharp contrast to figures collected as early as 1990 where total contributions equaled 7,069,584 dollars. As the rhetoric continues, around the Iraq debate, the developing pattern is quite clear; as defense spending has risen so have the contributions to candidates.

Interestingly, it appears from current figures the defense industry carries with it one more asset…a crystal ball. In both the "Defense" and "Miscellaneous Defense" categories, lobbying efforts and contributions have shown clear favorability towards Republican candidates. However, this is no longer true. For the 2006 election cycle Republicans acquired approximately 65% of contributions where as Democrats received only 34%. Already for the 2008 election cycle, Democrats are gaining strength in this sector. As of today, December 29, 2007, Democrats have received 52% of the contributions from defense contractors. In contrast, the Republicans have only received 48%.

Perhaps we can surmise that Democrats are neither cowardly nor powerless as so many would have us believe. With a majority in both house's, and more members of the Republican Party recognizing support for this endless war is political suicide, clearly a solution exists. Just as money and greed are justifying the continuance of the Occupation of Iraq, it can end it as well. Democrats have the ability to end this occupation; it appears they simply lack the will to do so. With the presidential election around the corner, it would behoove all of us who wish to see this war end to examine the candidates and their loyalty to defense contractor profits. To date, every candidate both Republican and Democrat have accepted money in the thousands from this industry. That is every candidate save two: Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel.

As evidenced in recent years, money wields greater power than the will of the American people, however, the people continue to hold the power of the vote, perhaps it is time we used it wisely.

Okay, let's get this straight once and for all...

There is only ONE party in the United States, The Business Party. "Partisanship" is a historical reference ONLY to something that no longer exist.

You are now a citizen of the United States of America, Inc. And international coup of global business partners, who run puppet regiems in foreign lands where their business interest run.

Your "democratic process" has been thwarted for a while now. And sure, you can have your "rights", as long as you purchase them up front!

Capitalism is that hard to persuade. All we of peoples have to do is understand that marketing and branding of goods and services, and learn our own niche role to creating change within it. Its not some untangable monster; its an entity and network of vast interests and impecable versatility. Lets always remember that we can reform any aspect of capitalism that we wish to change or modify. I myself believe capitalism to be psychopathic much like the mentionings in the documentary The Corporation. But I also believe that we can diagnos the poor behaviors within it and diagnose it through behavioral modifications. But not all people are able to do behavioral modifications. We as peoples who understand its actual applications must teach people within capitalism how to change its behaviors.

Blaming the corporation is like blaming the dog. If we leaned the behviors we can change the dog. But first we must change our own behviors and understanding of the entitiy which we seek to change.

Just my opinion. And maybe I'm wrong. Not trying to bash you:).

When I was just three and 4, my sister and me learned to talk and read, by playing my dads old 45 records. "Another Saturday Night" Sam Cooke, " how prophetic these songs were. I was the families little R&B star, born in Detroit, a city that is now in financial ruin, particularly the manufacturing sector. Understanding the Capitalist m.o., is a must in the revolution back towards Democracy.

I think we can work on fighting fascism by creating police misconduct organizations in EVERY city/town. Many of our cops are outstanding peoples, but there are the very few bad apples which can easily taint the barrel. And there are many peoples outside the barrels that would like to see some of the barrels tainted.

Talking with some friends recently, we discussed people who had a major impact on our country without the recognition usually associated with such impact players. Earl Warren came to mind, then Ike. It was he who warned us about the military industrial complex. How right he was.

It is so interesting to me tho that he warned us but was also somewhat complicit in its beginnings. It seems that many in the White House become "true" believers in democracy only after they leave office. I am reminded of the work of Bill Clinton and George Bush Sr. after the Tsunami. I am not sure we would have seen such friendship and compassion with these men if they were currently in politics.

I am very disappointed with our Democratic Congress, they have completely failed us!!
They have done NOTHING for us and continue to cower to bush!

If you support a candidate shouldn't you also own their voting record? That being said, why is hillary doing well in the so called polls? she voted almost 100% with bush!

How ignorant do you have to be to support giuliani for that matter? what the hell is going on?

I support Kucinich because he has NOT taken any money from corporations, he has a plan to end this war and bring justice to the people who brought us to this aggressive war!
He will look out for the people in this country and not let lobbyist dictate his agenda.
If you pay attention to the debates and have half a brain you can weed out the candidates that have flip flopped on many of the issues!
Enough is enough!!

Thank you ...great blog!

I myself have switched to Kissinich because he's hard on ending the war with real time action and not rhetoric. I was a fan of Ron Paul, and am still of some of his economic policies, but am not supportive of his xenophobia spreadings of immigrants, and his historic action of not supporting racial equality via the Civil Rights Bill of 1964. (I just post a blog about it.)

So to your camp, camp Kissinich, I'll be supporting physically and fiscally, as supporting such a cause is supporting all peoples everywhere.

Agreed! the last election spoke volumes yet this Democratic Congress dropped the ball!
They could have dug their heels in and said NO, yet they proved to be spineless.
Time and time again they continue to fund this war, which they just did again:
Democratic leaders are preparing a new $500 billion plan that would send the president as much as $70 billion in Iraq funding
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2007/12/10/as-congress-caves-on-iraq_n_76101.html

http://www.thenation.com/blogs/thebeat?pid=237751
09/28/2007
Congress Quietly Approves Billions More for Iraq War
The Senate agreed on Thursday to increase the federal debt limit by $850 billion -- from $8.965 trillion to $9.815 trillion -- and then proceeded to approve a stop-gap spending bill that gives the Bush White House at least $9 billion in new funding for its war in Iraq.

Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold, the maverick Democrat who has led the fight to end the war and bring U.S. troops home from Iraq, was on the losing end of the 94-1 vote. (The five senators who did not vote, all presidential candidates who are more involved in campaigning than governing, were Democrats Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Joe Biden and Republicans John McCain and Sam Brownback.)

The "no" votes in the House, all cast by anti-war members, came from one Republican, Ron Paul of Texas, and 13 Democrats: Oregon's Earl Blumenauer, Missouri's William Clay, Minnesota's Keith Ellison, California's Bob Filner, Massachusetts' Barney Frank, New York's Maurice Hinchey, Ohio's Dennis Kucinich, Washington's Jim McDermott, New Jersey's Donald Payne, California's Barbara Lee, Maxine Waters, Diane Watson and Lynn Woolsey.

When you take a chance and leave your party demanding a change of the status que, disappointment is saying it mildly! I would be down right pissed!

Thanks Jennifer
p.s. I focus on the war, as you know there are too many other issues to vent on ugh! :o(

Increasing our poverty on sponsoring murder is absolutely discusting. I feel my whole body crenching with shame and disgust. We have no one to blame but ourselves. No one is doing this but ourselves. We have to wake up. We have to go to jail. If we don't go to jail, we're not woke up. If we're not going to jail, then we sponsor murder.

Perhaps it is not Congress who has failed us . . . perhaps it is a system of government with the checks and balances in place that has given the President veto power that only a Congress with one party holding a VERY strong majority can override. The current split in Congress prevents them from doing so. I guess what I am trying to say is that I don't think our politicians can be blamed as much as the fact that we are in the worst-case scenario for the type of government we have in place. Does that make sense?

Totally. I think you are on to something here and it is something I have given a lot of thought to. Many philosophers warned against democracy for various reasons but mostly because it is so difficult to truly keep people informed and active participants. The Constitution was written so that it could be changed, and with the veto power given to the President it does create a quandary in terms of true representation.
However, we the people do have to power to do something about the power of special interests...again looking at where our vote goes but also in terms of taking some action for change. This is something we seriously need, election reform. I am for spending caps, but then we run into free speech arguments, I am sure you know all about that!

it's sooo crucial we make the right decisions......

dennis kucinich is my favorite of course, but i'll take obama over dr. paul anyday.

ron paul is to conservative for me, and his abortion stance seems too judgemental.

i think we need to reregulate not deregulate.

deregulation in my opinion would give to much power to the businesses and take power away from the workers; it would be going backwards not forwards.

The efficiency of change must be gaged by the statistic of people ready to go to jail via nonviolent, peaceful, directively activie civil disobedience. We need to really remember this simple strategym. And let us not forget the power of the internet and of real time video footage.

We must be willing to liberate our minds with jail cells. Untill then we will allow our peoples to be murdered and plundered.

Yes, civil disobedience is a must. I truly believe that we must get psychologist together and devise a strategy to increase the stats. Its all numbers and all about conveying the videos of oppression and jail goings to the global world. Everything must be tangible and on a stage never seen before. A true act of peace. A true act of not supporting war.

But yeah, go you. You'll have to tell me about it. Or maybe you can shoot me a private message about it. Or maybe you can just tell me about it after the fact:).

it's the 14th amendment argument that has been largely discussed and considered never to have been ratified etc. You will find most Libertarians like Ron Paul are opposed to the 14th amendment largely because it seams to be the excuse the federal government uses to overrule the states on all matters of individual state law. Further because the question of true ratification comes to light and the argument for citizenship of illegal aliens. Congress does have the ability to withdraw citizenship according to Rulings by the Supreme Court, the real debate is whether or not it will also recognize citizenship of non natural born citizens as having the right to hold office.

Some of the details here in Wiki cover the precise mention of certain figures and one namely your own governor who wants to run for president of the united states.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural-born_citizen

controversy over the ratification of the 14th amendment:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourteenth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution

IMO the proposal to make the necessary changes to end these arguments would be the formation of a North American Union so there is no need to worry about citizenship and boarders. His Perspective would appear to be one to defend national sovereignty and not reward people who desire by illegal means to gain access to citizenship.
Such as covered in the following act:
http://www.uscis.gov/propub/ProPubVAP.jsp?dockey=cb90c19a50729fb47fb0686648558dbe

basically looking at the situation this way. Having a wife who immigrated to the US and we jumped through every hoop for her to come here, paid thousands of dollars and wasted time waiting years for approval she was finally awarded her citizenship after doing everything legally. When someone else awards those who violate the same laws and bypass all the legal requirements and have the fee's waived it's like a reward. They are rewarded for committing a crime according to immigration regulations by attempting to obtain work in the us via illegal entry and working illegally, yet they are rewarded with the citizenship of their child born here so they can stay because the Dependant is a natural born US citizen by illegal minds mind you, who is now Dependant on the parents to provide for him. Their actual status should be denied according to our laws yet there are exceptions made and the reward is they get to live here and work here illegally.

The solution being used in Mexico is of another nature which has been proposed here and will start to be enforced by May of 2008 with the REAL ID act. the eventual proposal will likely be identical to this one:
http://in.news.yahoo.com/071228/43/6oy6m.html

the Solution Ron Paul proposes would prevent us from getting to that point and from having to join a North American Union, to keep our constitution and to keep the Sovereignty of the United states. I'm not a big fan of the 14th amendment because of the apparent abuse of power the federal has used with it in an assumed role. However i am also not convinced it was properly ratified. having waiting patiently for years for my wife to become a citizen of the united states, jumping through all the immigration hoops and having paid the thousands of dollars required to make the US government accept my marriage to my wife as legitimate and her desire to gain citizenship as legitimate, i am all for clear definition of Citizenship that is not in favor of rewarding illegal immigration by playing the game of jumping through hoops, or forced microchipping of people. I am all for people who want to immigrate to the united states, but why should I have to pay the money and jump through the hoops when they are rewarded for non compliance?

I appreciate activist mentality's but i have actually dealt with immigration for 6 years. It's a real slap in the face when illegal immigration is rewarded. Imagine someone steals your car, gets caught but because of an exception in the law, they are not even fined and instead they are allowed to keep the car and you can't do anything about it.

rewarding someone with Citizenship in the USA should be a reward in itself, saying go ahead and break the law we will reward you for it sends the wrong message.

I see what you are saying, however, if we were to follow the logic of not rewarding those who were born here by illegal parents, a lot of us would have to pack up and go home. None of my relatives came here "legally" nor did they jump through the hoops of the process you described above. They came here around the late 1800's and just pretty much melted in so to speak.
The one thing I also found alarming in the commercial is that no where did he address NAFTA. I know he has discussed rescinding it, which I totally support, however, he does not acknowledge that these people are basically economic refugees brought here because of US policies in South America.

i think you misunderstood my position, i have no problem with people born here, it's pretty much standard in many country's if you are born there you are a citizen of that country. They are not the ones i was referring to in regards to rewards. The reward is for the illegal alien who comes to the USA and decides to live there claiming the child is a dependent and therefore they can not leave because the child is a US citizen. The child is not rewarded, the Child is already a citizen the reward comes to the people there illegally, they get the benefit of staying and of course working illegally and the reward if amnesty is granted of breaking the law and being rewarded for doing so.
My answer would be simple, grant the Child US citizenship and the ability to obtain a US passport, but still require the legal means to obtain citizenship like everyone else for the parents, or the entire family can be deported with the ability to reenter legally later when the child is of sponsorship age. Issue a Visa for the family with a natural born Child who is a US citizen via a special visa class that could be generated. One that does not grant the authorizing of 12 family members to come along too via sponsorship but only immediate family as in the parents and the other siblings. Thus because they have a US citizen who is a child it would give them the right to raise the child in America making the process legal for them, but it would require them to still comply with the law to migrate only have access to work while they wait for their immigration to be approved, thus they can work legally and still continue the process of raising their child ( an american) in America and have the befit of working at the same time as they work off their immigration status, they would be entitled all the same working privileges but also all the same requirements by US law for immigration status be it permanent resident or Citizenship. This way they can work and be taxed and do things legally just like anyone else wanting to get married to a US citizen who is a non us citizen. That way the treatment is fair, however if they were there illegally then they should also have to pay a fine or increased fee's because they were there illegally in the first place, thus seeking to violate the law in order to obtain legal residence. I would also consider this a misdemeanor offense and add it to a criminal record which can be removed once the person passes their citizenship test. In other words, they can have it removed if they want to by continuing to follow the legal process and then the misdemeanor can be removed from their record.

Now in regards to your grandparents, mine etc.. different times different issues i am sure.
The Immigration laws were very different when your grandparents would have entered the country.

I am uncertain of Ron Paul's stance on NAFTA mainly because i have not followed up on his views on NAFTA but i know he has mentioned being very opposed to the NAU and SPP. If he is apposed to the NAU, NAFTA would also fall in line with this regards.

basically economic refugees brought here because of US policies in South America.
-Ah bad foreign policy is an area where HE would like to make changes for certain, if the policy is unconstitutional i am sure you will find that he can provide answers to these issues as well from his viewpoints, i do not know of course how to answer for him.

I can only speak on the immigration issue mainly because i have gone through it with my wife. The assumption is that marriage means someone is instantly a US citizen. That is definitely not the case.

respect,
4

I think money is only a symbol. If we have a real fair and eqalitarian system of voting and voting equality for peoples. one vote for one persons and for all people to have easy acess to voting systems, and destruction of this bull s electoral college crap, and a nonrigging of the votes, counting of the black votes, prisoners, etc ... all the money in the world couldn't defeat that.

Let us not forget that our last president was put their through coruption and the general consent of the peoples to allow his forcefull ascendency to power.

I can hear Sam Cooke's song A Change Is Gonna Come- so I personally have hope. We must all have hope. But hope can only come in the form of DIRECT ACTION. DIRECT ACTION daily. On nonstop barrage of truth to the despotic powers that be that deny our peoples an ability to not murder, to not plunder, to participate, and to promote the truth ideals of democracy and freedom.

destruction of this bull s electoral college crap
- can you say disenfranchisement of the people? none of the states west of the Rockies would get a say. What is your proposal to rival the electoral college? What you propose is mob Rule. The east coast would then set the pace for everything in the country. Politicians would only visit those states and who cares about the west coast.

and a nonrigging of the votes
- this has been going on for THOUSANDS of years all the way back to Greece and Rome.
It's not the number of votes but who counts them.

to participate, and to promote the truth ideals of democracy and freedom.
- what you re proposing is neither of these. No offense but how can you say this when you are proposing to disenfranchise more then half of the country with the removal of the electoral college with out proposing a viable alternative. Popular vote does not always make right. The popular guy in high school is not always the guy who should lead. I am not in support of the Bush administration by any means but i definitely do not see a viable solution proposed here which supports anything but the negative impact of democracy, that being the Mob rule mentality where the 51% majority dominates the rest under neath them with out a say or a vote.
If you support freedom what is your solution to the overarching power grab of the current administration and that of a democratic administration as well? since both seam to be acting in unison proposing More federal power and less state authority and even less individual liberty?

What you are saying sounds good but it's a bit of doublespeak when analyzed.
