1) your identity will like to every SSN used to associate your likeness in a database. generally, when a person is linked to more than one SSN it is questionable. this can be traced via public records as well.

2) every person who has ever used your SSN will link to you in a database. generally, this is also pretty red flag. this can be traced via public records as well.

4) if you can assume hard proof/documentation you should be able to file civil suit. probably prosecute criminally as well. it's very new law, the US stature for ID theft wasn't written until 98 in my brief research of this subject, this means that your lawyer/lawyers should probably be pretty good and that anything you do is probably going to be nice caselaw exposure, since i always imagine lawyers love this stuff when applying for promotions.

you could probably hire a PI of some sort to organize your case. as someone who does entry level fraud investigation for a corporation, sort of like barista work without chemicals, my sense of tools are probably spoiled and limited, since a multi billion dollar entity ownes my tools, but they are totally directed towards financial liability for "the company".

I can tell you that looking thorugh identity tools, there are a lot of companies that do a lot of crazy things with public records and that once you are a laywer and have all those oathes and disbarment over your head, probably equally a lot of databases with not so public records.

I think you hit the nail right on the head. Most people are unaware of how easy it is for lame ass crooks to steal your identity and have a field day with it. I guess they figure that they will get caught or cut off eventually but in the mean time they take it for all it's worth. It is EVIL, you are right there.

Their karma will take care of them, don't you worry. People of my faith believe in something called the law of three fold return; every action you take for good or ill will be repaid in kind, three fold. I have watched it happen my whole life and know it to be a fact. So many times people who have fucked me over have paid dearly without my raising a finger. Don't worry they'll get what is coming to them no matter what you do or don't do about it.

On the practical side, you can clean this up. It'll be a pain in the ass but it can be done. Your FICO score can be raised as well after you get rid of all the bogus accounts. You should go to http://www.myfico.com and look at the credit education sections. There's some good and helpful info there that will help you to straighten it out. From here on out you might consider getting ID theft watching from your credit card companies. Almost all of them offer it now and it's pretty cheap...around $10.00/month. Anything that was done with bogus SS and other bogus info can be removed from your record with a little hard work. If I were you, I'd hire a GOOD financial advisor and tax attorney and charge them with getting this mess straight.

Opal's advice is great. I was just talking to someone about that very thing yesterday. Other than that, maybe this whole thing is about patience? It is probably going to take a long time and a methodical going over of details with a fine tooth comb. Maybe if you wed yourself to that idea, it would be a little easier to deal with. Look at it like a part time job, taking some time every day to work on it and then being done with it for the day and focusing on your creativity. Don't feel overwhelmed, just bite off a little chunk everyday.

I know this hurts and sucks beyond any comprehension...so that's the first thing, don't even try to understand. Like you said, karma will run it's course and I'm not sure why this happened to you, but I think part of it was a lesson so know you are AWARE of how friends can be as fake and Pam's tits. So this is really a learning experience, a harsh one I know, and I'm sure that the FBI will come to terms with this mess and karma will take over.

While I wish you nothing but the best, and I hope you get back all that you lost, I do hope that you aren't stressing yourself too much about this.

I can't explain to you the evil part because I never experienced that type of evil personally, but I can be sure that it feels like you were ripped up, invaded, and left to die. You're alive though Courtney so keep living and fuck them, they will get what's coming.

This is terrible. I am so sorry you have to go through this and trying to explain such evil mindedness to your child is even worse. There is no explanation. Some people in this world are just pre disposed to being so jealous of others that have done well that they feel somehow justified or entitled to a share. Even if they don't even know you. Maybe it's easier that way if they don't have to think about your feelings or what it will do to you. I think you may have been marked because over the years you have been very, very successful and although you are a very intelligent and clever woman, you did have the time period when you were "out sick" and that may have made people think they could get something past you. Your karma is good and you will get through this. The journey is tough no doubt. When bad things like this happen we always want to know why. Why did they do this? But , the answer is really just this base...there are a lot of shitbags in this world that are just waiting to try to get something for nothing and they would steal the soul right out of you if they thought they could. You will get through this although I know it must make you feel so sad and violated. Hang in there darling. This too shall pass.

From your posts, it sounds like you are having a hard time finding people you can trust. If someone tells you something that is too good to be true, run, don't walk, from them. It doesn't sound like any kind of bad karma. It sounds like you are being swindled and controlled entirely too much. You will probably have to put your foot down and start watching your own back to put a stop to it.

About evil:
I am convinced that people are inherently centered on the self by nature. Once in a blue moon, you meet someone who tries, at least tries, to think of other people and understands the concepts of common courtesy, love and respect. Most people only think of their own wants. What I am trying to explain is that trust is not something you should place in people until they have earned it. You have the right to make them earn your trust by making sure they are not trying to steal from you before you trust them. The evil you are experiencing with this situation is greed. Several different con artists don't have to like each other to take advantage of the same person. Obviously, there are a group of people who saw their chance to swindle you and took it. It's just plain greed. If they keep getting away with it, they'll keep doing it, if not to you, then to someone else.

Old versus new:
The things I don't understand are why they wouldn't let you have your own check book and why you got charged several times over for a greeter who wasn't there. It's your money. You should have final say on what gets spent. If you don't have any say so, there is something major wrong with that picture. From just the little you have posted about, it sounds like you are still being robbed. That's what my gut is telling me. Any effort you put out to straighten out the old stuff is going to take your mind off stopping the new stuff that is happening to you. It sounds like a vicious cycle.

Anyone's best bet is to cut all credit cards and pay off and cancel all credit accounts except maybe one card for buying gas (for the purpose of building good credit for a mortgage on a home only, because houses are so expensive). I'm serious. If someone can't pay for it now, why buy it unless it's something they need? Wants and needs. A person can stay in debt for the rest of their life and still be paying years later for something that they no longer use or that they no longer even own. That seems ridiculous to me. Maybe I'm just a tightwad. I don't know.

But no credit cards means no new charges against you. If any strange credit card bills do show up, cancel them and let them know you didn't make those charges. It wouldn't hurt to think about it for now for your own protection while you straighten this enormous mess out...as hard as that would probably be to do.

I'm sorry to hear you are having to go through all this. I wish I had some answers. All I can do is offer up opinions on what I think. They are just opinions though and not much help, I know. I'm sorry. I wish for nothing but the best for you. :hug:

I have been put through some evil bullshit in my life concerning my son and while going through it I had so much anger and hate in me and it about ruined me. Karma was served, it took a while, but it felt GREAT when it happened!! I know how easy it is to get wrapped up in the shit and dwell. as much as i agree that you should not OVER-stress, and try to focus on the positive as much as you can (like that fact that you are now aware and looking into all this financial stuff and that it WILL get sorted out dammit(!), and that you are an innately intelligent and savvy person once you sink your teeth into something, even something as complex and numbing as all of this financial stuff), i think it's good that youre expressing all of this. it IS helping your karma b/c youre spreading awareness to others who might not be aware of similar things happening to them! or that could happen to anyone. youre shedding the light of truth; that's really good.
also, if youre banker was in cahoots with the people who were fleecing you, and you have evidence of that, get yourself the best lawyer for this stuff and sue the banker! if you find a really awesome, smart lawyer, they'd have a field day with this. there is just no excuse for a BANK to be allowing that kind of malfeasance. and the -right- thing to do would be to sue their asses for hurting you and frances. give them a taste of their own medicine and do it with the law on your side. booya.

I hope these people will reach that state where they REALISE what they're doing and they get a conscience! I cannot imagine anyone who has a conscience, to be doing stuff like that. They will seriously have a lot to make up for, but hopefully they'll do it before they die. They cannot escape the consequences of their actions forever.

The people who ripped you off? They take opportunity everywhere they can out of greed and total self interest. They don't give a shit if they hurt you or cause you pain because they are too shut down and off from even coming close to knowing what it feels like to be in your shoes. They live in their heads not their heart and gut as you do.
These situations were created by your lack of interest/attention to these thing and hence they saw the opening/opportunity and they went for it. As another poster said there is probably some psychological sadism involved as well. Some people get a massive charge and a big kick out of causing problems.
And it all comes down one word POWER. As maybe you and I would live and breathe creating music , beauty and art they live and breathe creating self power....and what is more powerful than having the ability to take away from someone something they think that person values as much as they value? And these people value one thing because that thing brings them power: Money. Money is the first thing in the structure of their value system so they automatically assume it is the first in yours and that is what they go for to take power away from you.
Add to this they are/were probably very much intimidated by you if they knew you and then fucking with you is that much sweeter for them... i don't have to tell you about the whole women having power thing now do I.... and how it just freaks some people out to the point where they impose themselves in your life and try to or do take power away.
When a person is not conscious of an area of their life and not attending to it as they should all that unused energy just sits inside and becomes stagnant and agitated. If you are not using it then it eventually finds a way out through you and projects outward... attracting this kind of person in your life. In other words these 'evil' greedy people are manifested and attracted to you from your own inattention and non-actions in that area of your life. They live out what you ignored. It is just like if you cannot express anger and hold it inside believe me you are going to attract allot of angry people to you to live that anger out until you learn to express it and take care of your own anger.
Take control. Just do it. Use your power. You are certainly very gifted with a hell of a lot. Use it.
 

my sister got taken for close to 600,000 a few years ago, and when i got my computer this past march within 2 fucking days some scumbag hacked into my accounts and helped themself to a <myspace>size</myspace>able abmout of $. I'm so sorry that happened to you...I was a victim of ID theft about 6 months ago, and while it was on a smaller scale, it was really awful. I was in the middle of my second year of AmeriCorps, doing full time volunteer work, and someone stole money from me from an online account....these people really are pure evil. They don't even think about how their actions are going to affect their victims. I hope everything gets sorted out for you soon.

I am going through an identity theft ORDEAL myself, it is one of my worst nightmares come true. The banks that let this slide through are not very helpful either, and of course the police give you a big line of bullshit so they don't have to file a report. I hope you get it all straitened out. It is unfortunately really, really easy to steal someone's identity these days, especially someone well known like you. Just keep track of every piece of paper you receive, that's the best I can tell you. I love you Courtney and hope you are doing well otherwise!!!!
