Before I left for the holidays, I wanted to duck in and wish all of our DCUO friends well.  I also wanted to thank you for all the comments. It’s great to read all the hopes, opinions, and wishes for the game. As I’ve said before, we read this page first when we’re looking to get a feel for player reaction to our latest and greatest. Speaking of which, I also wanted to give you all a little gift for the holidays:....

Let’s talk movement powers.  In DCUO, you’ll be creating a hero or villain from your own imagination that will strive to fight alongside or against iconic DC characters.
A combination of choices will determine the exact powers and
abilities of this character.  Fundamental among these choices is the question of how you move.
....

Flight:  Obviously, you need the option to soar through the sky.  While an oldie-but-goodie, this movement power gains some new dimensions in DCUO.  Firstly, you’ll have combat powers based exclusively on your ability to fly.  Want to catch up to that super speedster who’s racing away?  Hit your intercept ability and swoop in for the kill.  Need to get across the city right quick?  Boost your flight speed and leave your enemies reeling from the sonic boom.  We’re finding in our play tests that players who like to have good general movement controls like the flexibility of flight.  And while it does provide easy mobility, it also tends to also attract the eye.
Who should we attack?  How about the guy hovering
in place…....

Super Speed:  Run up and over anything.
  Fast.

That’s super speed in DCUO.  You’ve seen it in our gameplay movies and you’ve played it at Comic-Con.  Super speed redefines, ‘run and gun’ by giving players the ability to fight and move everywhere.  Again, our play testing has shown that players who like more of a racing game feel to their movement enjoy super speed.  The agility and precision made possible by this set of powers brings a whole new level to skill-based gameplay. Of course, that same level of control has another edge.  Loose control and you can end up in all sorts of interesting places.  Let’s just say that the ceiling ain’t the best place to stop and take a shot.  Trust me.
....

Acrobatics:  Acrobatics lends an entirely new feel of platform play to DCUO.  In leaps and bounds, players arc through the skies of Metropolis, pausing on the side of buildings to take cover or take a prime shot.  Double-jumping and air dashes add a level of mid-air control that keeps the other movement types on their toes.  Like no other power, acrobatics puts tactical control of the terrain into the player’s hands.  Of course, that also means that you have to be aware of your surroundings. Accidentally sticking to an overpass while trying to escape your lead engineer can be problematic.
....

I have to admit, acrobatics is my favorite new addition to DCUO.  Yes, it may come from my personal affection for ninjas, but hey, we’re all still fans at heart.
And who doesn’t like flipping out now and then?....

I look forward to seeing which type is your own favorite as we release more information in the New Year.  Have a happy holiday.  See you in the skies of DCUO.
....

well like you read, there are going to be certain powers that are going to be tied to your travel power. like the Intercept or the Boost like Chris mentioned.

Also in City of Heroes, Superspeed was amazing but it was very limited in respect to the amount of places you could reach. God forbid you needed to reach some place that was on the roof of a building, or on top of a bridge while you're under it... if I understood Chris Cao correctly, he said we can run over EVERYTHING meaning up walls on ceilings too.. and ten acrobatics wasn't a travel power in city of heroes. so this is something new which I'm sure many people will be excited to try out.

hope i answered your question, also I don't work from SONY of DC i'm just a regular Myspacer if if i got any of this information wrong.
my apologies

You guys really need to add a cinematic fighting system and a changing fight system as you level up also the AI has to be smart and use its environment and the whole city has to be destructible and when you fight with a player you can combine your powers to form a more powerful attack.

Its great that you guys are going to let us have the power right away and then build on it from there unlike that other superhero MMO that you had to lvl and lvl and lvl before you got to really fly or run at super speeds

Sounds great, but will we have the ability to be a member of the Green Lantern Corp? Will we be able to be some sort of ninja trained regular guy a la Batman, or is that the Acrobatics? What about technology based powers?

You don't join the Green Lantern Corps the ring picks you. It would be stupid if everyone could go running around as a member as the of the GLC. There are only a certain number of GL's in the Universe so in order to join one of them has to die. Unless DCUO adds some stupid mission that anyone can undertake to become a GL, I think they should just let people create their superheros without joining closed rank systems like the GLC, however you should be able to join the Justice League since they went unlimited.

Acrobatics sounds like a great addition to the feel of the DC Universe. The obvious templates would be Nightwing, Batman, Blue Beetle, or even the Creeper.

I honestly look forward to getting a chance to test this game out.

I am a 4 year + veteran of the City of games, and if this feels right, I will definitely move my E-heroics to the DCU.

Is acrobatics actually going to have grappling hook or not? and how is it really going to compare to flight and super speed if you're just some dude who can't really go that fast? Maybe if acro was sort of like a combination between athletically fast (slower super speed) and grappling hooks (like batman or spiderman, were they just sort of attach to nothing in the sky and swing from place to place)

Will there be cominations for characters like Wonder Woman and Superman who have the powers of both flight AND superspeed? Will they be able to use their other powers while flying? For example, can Wonder Woman hoist or move objects and people with her lasso using her superstrength and superspeed? Can Superman use his arctic breath and vision powers while flying? Can Wonder Woman deflect attacks while flying?

I think you cleary are doing a great job with the three listed above, but honestly super jump and teleportation are huge. I understand that they can be challenging to program, especially because your trying to incorporate and balance them all in combat as well, but without those two (and possibly more), your not offering nearly as much originality and customization to the players as they'd want. Either way, can't wait and keep up the good work.

If they do introduce teleportation, I hope there is a mechanic like needing to have been to a locacion to be able to teleport there. Maybe start with line of sight and as you grow in power you would be able to recall destinations you have been and with some concentration you can jump to that point.

incredible! I wanted to congratulate you guys on taking such a simple idea like travel powers, making it new and more expansive!

in other superhero mmos your travel power looked just like everyone else's no matter if you were a fiery speedster or a bio mechanical wonder. which was pretty lame, with these extra powers that you're adding that adds more room to give a type of "personality" to your character making him/her more unique.

one question: will we be able to add "effects" to the travel power? makybe a blur? a cloud streak? light?

Ok, so I have to ask about a few that I associate with superheroes that haven't been mentioned.

1.) Teleportation - The ability to teleport from point A to point B and even in combat to drive your enemies nuts. Going to hit me? Oh I'm over here, here I am, punch in your face, up above you, and then I'm gone.

2.) Vehicles - I'd really really like to see heroes have the ability to get customized vehicles, planes, and other technological gadgetry to allow them to move. Everything from jet-packs, to levitating discs, to super-sonic skates.

3.) Super Jumping - I know this is marvel oriented to ask, but HULK JUMP. You get the idea. Some sort of muscular character jumping up and over a building.

4.) Wall walking - You mentioned super speed moving up any surface, and acrobatics that involve using your surroundings, but at a non-super speed can you walk up the side of a building? Can you hang upside under a bridge watching traffic? I imagine no, but you never know.

A few concerns about the actual 'speed' of travel powers. I have witnessed this in CoH and other games. I'd like to know how you got around the issue of mega-amounts of information coming in while flying to people's computers. Especially flight.
If you're soaring at super sonic speeds are things on the ground/air just a blur?

Now that we've got a bit more detail about movement powers, does it mean we have a better idea of the size of the city? Is the city going to based on 'zones' or 'explorer' areas? Are you going to spend most of your time moving from mission to mission? New 'contact' oh you have to run to them, now run to the mission, now run back to the contact, now onto the next contact...

Lastly a few requests for missions and movement powers....

1.) Please do not place 'missions' in significantly 'dangerous' areas so players have to run past very 'dangerous' mobs to do the next mission.

2.) Please check npc speeds in missions and possibly allow us to tell them go slow, stop, run.

3.) If someone ever mentions travel supression during fights to keep things balanced, please slap them hard.

As a kid I grw up reading a lot of comics, I loved the super heros comics. So naturally I tried CoH/CoV but was a bit disappointed. So to see DCUO is coming out with a game made me all giddy inside.
I cannot wait for this to release, I am like a kid on Christmas, nervous, anxious, hoping it's not like a sweater from Grandma :)

As for travel powers, I love that you get them right away. That is what disappointed me about CoH/CoV, I had to wait a few levels to get it, I mean did Superman not know how to fly, could Spidey not jump and stick to walls.

WOOT I CAN FLY...I cannot wait for this game.

I'm all about the flight power baby!!! I'm also very excited that I can have a travel power right away. having to wait until level 14 to really be able to fly or run fast or what ever was a real pain in the rear.

And if I remember correctly, there is going to be a "based on" option that let's players design characters based on there favorite heroes (eg. personalized versions of Green Lanterns, or various Batman or Superman off shoots).
I hope that's still an option because I really want to join the Green Lantern Corps:)!!

Any way, thanks for the up date. I'm really looking forward to playing DCUO.
When's the beta-testing start?

Awesome. shaping up to look great.
Can't wait to buy!

Also, since the game is gonna be on sony station and it's also gonna be on ps3, i have a question. Most MMOs are $15 a month and with a plan that sony station has, you can pay $30 a month and get all the MMOs from sony.
Now since this time I'm gonna buy it for the ps3, can I still use my sony station account make my $30 a month subscription work for it on ps3 or do I have to buy it on the PC for it to work? Like will the game on ps3 have its own little system? And I hope PC buyers and ps3 buyers can play with each other because I have friends who are mixingly buying for both and we all want to play with each other and the same servers and stuff? will that work?

Thanks for making the games guys and can't wait for any more leakage! (*cough release date! cough*)

Yeah I like what I see so far in terms of travel powers. One thing I'd like to see is customization of effects while moving in fly, super speed or acrobatics, be it poses, colors, motion blurs, even customizable sound effects while entering, during and exiting use of a travel power.

It would be nice to have the game balanced so that these travel powers do not negatively affect PvP situations. Fly atm seems like it will be over powered, unless there is some sort of a penalty for using Flight Speed Boost, and Intercept.

The game seems to be shaping it self very nicely and I'm looking forward to playing it in the future.

Happy Holidays!!
