It seems Mr. Stephen Colbert of "Colbert Report" fame has taken it upon himself to use our "Re-Animate the Decemberists" contest as a call to arms.

It has come to the attention of Decembersits HQ, Mr. Colbert (his real identity is in fact that of a closeted high school teacher-- known as "Chuck Knobblett" to his students and coworkers, in- particular one Geoffery Jellyneck, and that he is not the sunday school teacher turned conservative political analyst secretly working under Karl Rove that he professes to be) has started a new segment in his show called "Who's Riding My Coat Tails Now?" It was during this segment that your beloved group of minstrels were taunted, accused and then challenged! That's right! The Decemberists have been directly challenged by the conservative right!

It seems that months previous the Colbert Report decided to do something "edgy" and offer up Stephen in front of a green screen wielding a light saber, asking fans to place Mr. Colbert into an animated world full of fraught and danger. Isn't your conservative right scary enough for you Chuck?

http://colboard.com/cn/greenscreen.php

Mr. Colbert, thinking that we actually watch his show religiously, went on to suggest that we had stolen his idea, calling us "...a bunch of coat tail riding jerks!" Who's riding on who's coattails? We already played out that "light saber thing" years earlier live and on stage, sans animation, sans stunt double, sans fancy green screen with pure rock, sweat, C batteries and plastic:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51fCwGAue5Q

So now, threatened by our video contest and in fear of losing his spotlight as the House and Senate slide from his fingers, and in an attempt by the right wing to glom on to our fans, Steven Colbert is offering up his "Second Green Screen Challenge":

http://www.colbertnation.com/

We are asking you to help us win this battle and set the record straight; that music will always prevail and not another right wing closeted doof will pull the wool over this nation's eyes. That's right, we want you to help us defeat Stephen Colbert in our video! "Mulch" him as they say, take him down to the banks of the Ohio, bring out your dead! Send them to him here and send them to us here. Further, we would like to announce "The First Decemberists vs Steve Colbert Guitar Solo Challenge". Put down the pen Colbert and pick up the axe! Let's see what kind of a man you really are and let's shread, "cut heads" as they say. Let truth and good music prevail!!!

Even bad publicity is good publicity. Such a thing should be counted as good advertisement. I personally find the entire thing hilarious.

Never a dull moment.

I read about this a couple of days ago, and I remember thinking, "The final battle should be a lightsaber duel." Except now that I think about it, the numbers wouldn't exactly prove fair.

Oh well. Mulch! :D

In all seriousneess, though, a Decemberists appearance on The Colbert Report would be like a party in my mind.

And everyone's invited.

No kidding! And with a lightsaber fight to boot! That event would be like an explosion of ultimate giddy! Maybe someone could put together a video of such things... hmm... if only I had the ability. Oh, how grand it would be.

PS. That YouTube video makes me yearn for some live Decembrists goodness. You guys are heaven. I am officially saving money.

Every time you think the universe can't get any more awesome, The Decemberists step up to the plate.

And make the universe more awesome, to clarify.

I am so IN!

I already put the Decemberists AND Stephen Colbert in Hawaii in separate green screen adventures. Now to combine it all in some bust of evil creativity. Imagine if Darth Vader could laugh. That's the sound you'd hear at the end of this message.

"cut heads" you say ? hmmmm I've seen that somewhere ... http://youtube.com/watch?v=IGAGqhqZfDE

If its a lightsaber fight use the double headed saber against him, if its a guitar battle use double necked guitars !!!
That'd be awesome to see !

I just want to know, as a few of us out here are slightly naive...but are you serious? Do you know that he is actually a big joke...hence the show being on Comedy Central...did you see his performance at the Presidential Correspondents Dinner? Anyway just wondering if you were kidding, becuase if you aren't, you are the biggest bunch of douche bags I have ever seen.

Oh, yes. The fake conservative commentator may hold faux beliefs, but his challenges are surely real.
Be warned, young Decemberists: the Colbert army is relentless in its internet crusades (I would suggest that you study up on the recently built bridge in Hungary for a taste of their power).
I think that a confrontation in person would be your best bet, for his online minions play rather dirty.
Watch your coat-tails and prevail: you have my full support.

Actually, you're dumb. They are mocking him the same way he mocked them. Develop a sense of humor and you might understand little faux-feuds like this a little better.

As for me, I hope he actually ends up in the video. That would be a great piece of Decemberists history saved forever in the magic of film.

he also noted that he's giving them home field advantage by holding the contest in december.

you've obviously not heard the decemberists' live performance on npr just after picaresque came out. colin busted out a wicked guitar solo in 'mariner's revenge song.' it may not have been satriani, or even kirk hammet, but it was impressive for an indie folk rocker.

Even Kirk Hammett? Satriani taught Kirk Hammett after hearing Hammett's early work with metallica. So perhaps you meant Hammett, or even Satriani. And satriani is uber pwnage ANYDAY

Don't tell me you guys aren't completely super stoked that you're getting so much exposure on the Colbert Report. I mean seriously:

1) Getting exposure on Colbert is better than getting it on MTV with screaming 14 year old girls.
2) This is seriously one of the most hilarious things I have ever seen in the history of music!!!! Not even have THE BEATLES (not capitalized for emphasis; THE BEATLES are so important to mankind that every letter of their name must be capitalized) been challenged on national television by a comedian.

Good for you guys!! You obviously know how huge of an audience that show has, so this will be good to get your name out there. You guys are real pioneers of our musical generation as far as I'm concerned.
