Opera and M&Ms
Louise Yeiser
100 words
I went to the opera and discovered that I could sneak a jumbo-sized package of peanut M&M's in my purse and eat them, one by one, without crinkling the plastic wrapper or rustling my purse or squeaking my seat or scrunching my body sideways or chomping or lip-smacking, while my neighbor in the section across the aisle crinkled, rustled, squeaked, scrunched, chomped, and lip-smacked her way through the last half of the first act and the entire second, craning necks and inspiring stage-whispered tsk-tsk's. "It simply isn't done," my mother would say, hiding her pride in my discreet, lady-like sneakiness.
