All I can do is be thankful that he made it possible for so many things to happen that have shaped who I am - even if we were on almost opposite sides of the planet. He has reached far and always will. Walk, in silence....

I think we should not be too sad, not because hes gone, but the lasting legacy hes left. The reinventing of club culture with the hac, the bands and the music he brought as well as much more.
but he will definatly be missed.
rest in peace Tony and have a great party with Rob and Martin!

Gutted last night, and just upset reading the condolences.Never got to speak to him,but he's always made me smile whether it's his appearances on Granada Reports,or his stage appearances.
Pissed myself first time I went to see New Order at the Hac in 1985,I was crushed up at the front under Gillian....which was nice. And Tony came on and said " Get back get back you lot....they're a bunch of ugly bastards anyway!"
Very funny bloke, remember reading recently 24HR Party People, his short involvement in Granada's WORLD IN ACTION,interviewing MP Keith Joseph and ended calling The Mad Monk a T**T. And Granada got to see the out-takes.
God bless Tony.

And take care Pete.

I was on NOOL when the word first got out. I was also the second on that main thread to speak up about it. Sad day indeed. '24 Hour Party People' movie-watching party this weekend, anyone!?

Humor aside, this world is a lot emptier now because of such a loss.

Margaret had it right too--I grew up listening to the music that Tony brought to the world--with LOVE--from his blessed Madchester.

Hail, hail, Madchester, whose king will always be. The once and immortal Mr. Wilson, Mr. Manchester, Sir.

Hey Tony, tell Ian, Rob, Martin and John Peel that Madchester and the world says YO!!

Cheers--

I cannot imagine what my vision on music would have been without him :
Joy Division and Factory Records were milestones. The exceptional music and the beautiful sleeves stood out in the early eighties music scene.
Another milestone was 1991 when we went to "Madchester" to The Hacienda, The Banshee, Dry 201, the record shop of 808 State and other places.
Mike Pickering was spinning at the Hacienda and the place went stark raving mad. That night became my introduction to club culture.

The influence of Tony Wilson in the history of today's music cannot be underestimated. He left an inerasable signature for over a decade.

I spoke to Tony once on a BBC Radio 5 phone-in show.

I told him that despite the stick he often got from certain quarters, he was a true hero in my eyes. Bands as strong as Joy Division may have made it without him - who knows? All we do know is that he backed them to the hilt and took every opportunity he could to influence people within the media to take note of the fact that "something was happening in Manchester".

His response to me? "Thank you very much, but I've done nothing really. I'm just a fan like you". That struck me as fantastically humble of the man.

He also yold me that one of his favourite concerts ever was New Order supported by Happy Mondays at Birmingham NEC. I can't remember the year, but I know it was the 26th March 'cos that's my birthday and the gig absolutely blew me away too.

RIP Tony. Best wishes to all that knew and loved him. I'll bung a few quid to Cancer Research as a gesture.

My reaction to the the news even surprised myself.
I genuinely had a tear in my eye when I heard the news. I have not felt like that about a stranger since the death of John Peel. Had it not been for Tony's involvement, the soundtrack to my youth might have been totally different.

I am grateful for his legacy.

I met Tony just the once when he visited my college in South Manchester to give a talk at a Music Conference and he asked me for directions. He was extremely polite.
For those close to him - his family, friends and all those he worked with - my thoughts go out to you. Although it is a sad day, his achievements for Manchester and the Music scene are part of a lasting legacy which will ensure he is never forgotten. There was only one Tony Wilson and he will be greatly missed by many. RIP.

i was totally shocked when i heard the news yesterday.
he was a very very awesome guy, who gave a lot.. a hell of a lot to manchester and the world of music and we have a lot to be thankful to him for.
a crazy, stubborn, down to earth, cool mancunian genius.

just a really sad, harsh way to go. but his memory will live on forever and he's the true father of Manchester. but he lived an exciting, fullfilling life and many people who cared about him and he gave back so much.

my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends, and everyone.

Dear Hooky,

This is a voice from the past - Cathy Lincoln. My heart broke in two places today, maybe even three because of what I just read on the news. One - Tony Wilson, that rascal has passed no one like him will come our way again. Then I just went on the New Order site and saw that Rob died way back in 2000, I had no idea and I was crazy about him - even had a little crush on him back in the day- heartbreak number two. When I saw 24 hour Party People it brought so many memories back. I had heard New Order interviewed on Jonsey's show, and then today I hear you were in town last week, another piece broke, especially in light of what I learned today! My Dad had surgery on Monday so I don't know if I would have seen you, but now you are gone, I hope we meet again someday. I think of you often and the old times at WB and at Capitol. I am in contact with Tim Devine, but perhaps you two have lost touch as well, in any event I'm sorry I missed your show, and you. Oh Peter, I am so so sorry...Love, Cat
