This morning in Michigan, Senator Obama announced a comprehensive New Energy for America plan designed to address the current energy crisis and move America towards a 21st century energy economy. Some of the proposals put forth today include:
  • Providing short‐term relief to American families facing pain at the pump
  • Helping create five million new jobs by strategically investing $150 billion over the next ten years to catalyze private efforts to build a clean energy future.
  • Within 10 years, saving more oil than we currently import from the Middle East and Venezuela combined.
  • Putting 1 million Plug‐In Hybrid cars – cars that can get up to 150 miles per gallon – on the road by 2015, cars that we will work to make sure are built here in America.
  • Ensuring 10 percent of our electricity comes from renewable sources by 2012, and 25 percent by 2025.
  • Implementing an economy‐wide cap‐and‐trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050.
You can read the full New Energy for America plan below:

What about solar energy? Stay away from nuclear energy. If Iran can't have it, neither can the United States.

Oh I like the idea that there should be a law that new houses built should be built with the alternative energy connections. That would be great. It would keep costs low because it would be done in mass nationwide as opposed to individuals who would love to do it but can't afford to b/c it's a bit expensive now. I hope Mr. Obama will look into that.

Keep up the good fight sir!!

What if we drilled? Wouldn't that help out with oil prices?
We should definately drill.

If we drilled we would get oil. It would not help out with oil prices in the way that you think. It would lessen the stress on the supply side, but that wouldn't shrink demand and only continues the same energy policies that have only allowed us to go as far as we are now... beholden to foreign countries. The problem isn't with drilling because we're already doing that. What some are suggesting is that we drill in places we normally wouldn't because drilling in those places presents a threat to the ecology/environment.

Basically the popular strategy going around is that if we don't have enough we should just get more, which is an attempt to simplify something complex, like saying the sun is just god's lightbulb. Don't have enough light? Well, turn on a lamp. Can't get to where you're going? Oh, what you need is transportation.

The strategy ignores all the factors that add or detract from the solution. In essence; no solution. It is the equivalent of you looking at the boy in your picture and saying, hey, I heard you don't have a girlfriend... let's have sex. ... Nevermind the risks of pregnancy, STD's, broken heart, age, maturity, etc.

I'm sorry you feel the way you do about Nancy Pelosi. So far, she's said, flat out, the only thing that really needs to be said so we can all focus on what needs to be done next... she said, George Bush is a complete failure as president. Now, all we have to do is consider how it is he has failed and how he is failing, and develope a strategy to overcome that failure and begin to succeed again.

I think Barak's got the right idea.

Please stay away from Nuclear power!!!!.... Earth only has about enough Urainium and plutonium to sustain the USA for 2 whole years at our current rate of energy consumption & to even use it that way we would have to build an Nuclear power plant every 2 min.s and then we have issues like the whole melt down possibility, possible terrorist attack at one of them & waste issues to worry about.

imagine if one weeks worth of the $ that made its way to Iraq for the war was supplied to the studies of the scientist there at Los Alamos national lab what could have been learned by now. Perhaps they would have figured out a better way to use the suns energy... or try and effectivly turn nuclear waste (much of which is simply being evaporated into the air we breath) into a useable energy sorce itself.

find out from them in Los Alamos New Mexico.... the scientists work for the sake of science... i bet they would work because they care. They walk the halls where the minds of men worked to unlock the atom why not harness the sun.

Each state can still get the money but they have to use it on renewable energy for there state.......what do you think?

I agree with this plan EXCEPT for the investment to "Develop the Next Generation of Sustainable Biofuels and Infrastructure" mentioned on page 5 of the plan. If we can open our eyes to see the food shortages occuring worldwide and the political chaos and rioting created in their wake (ex. Haiti), then we can see the direct connection of turning existing grains from the food supplies into biofuels is not the way to go. If we restructure our energy needs to promote an infrastructure for the production of "synthetic fuels," then we are only going to further ensure that such instability worldwide will continue to occur and, most likely, dramatically increase.

I'm no expert but it doesn't take much to see that an alternate source of energy must be researched and developed so that we don't burn up our planet and, at the same time, governments around the globe can remain stable. Yet, I believe in the kind of innovative "thinking outside the box" that Mr. Obama is ensuring with his presidential campaign. "Yes, we can" is not only the slogan of his campaign, but of our generation and the only optimistic choice we can make for our children and grandchildren.

A new Nuclear energy plant hasn't been built in over 30 years and the ones we have now are providing nearly 20% of the energy used in this country. Chernoble(hope I spelled that right) was a mistake but wasn't here in America and the only damage it has done long term is give nuclear power a bad name. Nuclear power waste can easily be taken care of safely and effectively. And we also have the resources and the time to do so. It is not the biggest and best solution to our energy problem but can be very effective. Wind, solar and electric power doesn't have the...horse power so to say to greatly power whole cities and large parts of the country at low costs, and theses things can take alot more time. Believe it or not people out there don't like looking at those large wind turbines, I say charge those people twice as much for gas and I bet there opinions will change. As for other countries like north korea, no they can't have nuclear power for the obvious reasons, lets be real, no need to lie to our selves, they simply can't be trusted in the position they are in in the world. Alternative sources of energy are great and I love obama for really going after them, we need them and we need them now and/or ASAP. But don't turn your heads away from nuclear power, It is safe and clean and again maybe not the best solution but it is better than alot of the things we use today.

I read the whole thing.

The part about the cars and trucks probably isn't very important and increasing fuel prices.

It's pretty obvious that the cost of fuel is making fuel economy an issue in the market.

Playing around with that would be one of those "gimmicks" you mention.

Let me cut to the chase.

Obama, you've got 8 pages here and all you need is one sentence:

Constitutional Amendment that all new homes and buildings require solar panels.

That one sentence is about real change.

It's green. It helps regulate the housing supply.

It isn't just a promise of getting here or there. It's setting a new direction for the world in how we think about using our resources.

Do you really get to take your own positions on the important topics?

Is a bold progressive step such as this too risky to take now, on the verge of your success?

Don't let me down!

America has proven to do a good job of keeping nuclear plants in check. The few incidents that have happened don't rank in the top 50 in the world and we've got like 120something of them, 2nd is France with 56 i believe. Although, I don't think we need too many more of those just in case.
The messiest thing to the environment in the US would be oil spills right?

I like those ideas on the Discovery channel, I don't remember the name of the program off the top of my head, but one of them was putting a bunch of low orbit reflectors in space to reflect some sun rays, one was putting windmills high up in the sky. I would like to see the government funding things like that, ideas that you can feel rich people aren't getting richer off of. Exxon Mobile developing hybrid cars, I can't help but think they aren't doing all they can to stay away from good old cheap Mid-East oil. I could care less if my care was made in the US, in fact, mine was not.

Possibly easier than a Constitutional Amendment or a new law requiring all new-build houses to be renewable-energy friendly, would be to introduce tax breaks for housebuilders building renewable-friendly houses, and also for existing homeowners who convert their properties to wind or solar power. This would greatly reduce the costs of both, and wouldn't spend years tied up in Congress, where the neanderthal GOP would do everything in their power to obstruct it.

In regards to energy:

While I can understand the republican view to save all the oil we have in reserves to a crisis, I am wondering just what level of economic pain we need to be in for them to see it as a crisis.

My true concern isn't that we'll use the oil reserves only to regret it later, but that what we regret now [not instituting a stronger green energy plan years ago when it was first discovered we could harness the power of the sun] will continue to be ignored and it's importance downplayed.

Along with that, I remember how hard people worked to get places like ANWR protected, and the political gymnastics they had to go through to get through all the red tape, and I remember what a victory it was to have their reasoning declared accurate; so, to push all that hard work aside now and pretend it never really mattered seems like a horrible flip-flop of conscience.

Are their arguements no longer valid? Does drilling no longer destroy the natural environment and add to the problem? Have we discovered that our oil resources were always infinite after all and all those stupid treehuggers were just rebel rousing to get attention?

I didn't think so.

Dear Senator (soon to be President), I applaud your recognition that it is past time to be done with fossil fuels. HOWEVER, I question your use of the word "new." None of the energy sources is new to us. Not even nuclear energy is new, since solar energy is actually 'fussion' energy. And the human race has been deriving energy from stones for centuries, only before the stone were called coal.

The "new" thing, Mr. Obama, is that now we have energy brokers. And these people, these brokers, who are responsible for manipulating the price of energy, not scarcity.

So my question to you Senator is what are you going to do about the folk, like 3 of McCain's principle advisors, who have gotten rich on establishing control on the "energy spigot," whether it be oil, solar, wind or nuclear? Nothing will change if the same despots are allowed to sneak in legislation like the "Enron exception," and rape consumers for profit.

I really think this plan has some great points, but at the same time I disagree with a few. I love the fact that Obama wants these new plug in cars. the cleaner, less emissions, the better. We need to look out for the earth, its the only one we have.I think we need to also look at using vehicles less often, more affordable public transportation. I love that he wants to set the standard for other countries in the global climate change effort, going green and clean. ANd thank you for looking out for the little man, giving us a break and taxing the oil companies that have caused all our greif in the first place. What I do not agree with is the off shore drilling. I just see so little room for error, as I live in Alaska and already the salmon population is declining, what would happen if because of a spill from an off shore plant, more species became endangered, slowing our economy, and ruining our environment. The same thing goes for nuclear power plants. They can be safe, but there are always accidents. I am not an environmentalist exactly, but I do think we need to preserve what we still have. I Think we need to move away from our dependence of oil, but not at the cost of a an even more threatening source of power such as nuclear. We need clean, renuable energy that we all can live with, and not fear. Isnt there such a thing as the hydrogen engine? Why dont we produce those at a resonable price? Also, I think that this whole surge in prices on oil has opened our eyes to think, what do we really need? Do we really need that new SUV because it looks cool, or can a bycicle get us from point a to point b sufficiently? Really, oil is nice, convenient, but expensive. People are getting back to nature, back to only the neccesitities, and while this may not be convenient, shouldnt we be looking out for the earth in the long run anyways? Barrack, you have my vote, but we still have some work to do on the energy crisis for the earths sake.

Hey PaleAnt, you're so stupid. Solar Energy is good. It's the Co2 because it blocks the sun in that's trying to get out, but with solar energy you actually harness the sun's energy so that you can turn on your tv, or your computer or whatever other electronic device. Back when the earth was being created there was a lot of Co2 in the air because of all the volcanoes spewing their gasses and lava. After a while that Co2 started to die down and go into the earth's crust, just sitting there, allowing plants and other organisms grow on top of it. What do we do? We take all that Co2 out of the ground in forms of gas and oil and just spew it back into the air. So you're right about the earth being unlivable one day, but not because of solar energy, because solar energy and light have been shining down on earth for millions of years.

But you're cool Obama keep up the good work.
I just don't really like the thing about nuclear, but still, good work! :)

I think it was a total conflict for Speaker Pelosi to stall a vote on offshore oil drilling and called for an end to the legislative session, leaving the fuel cost problem hanging once again with no solution offered. Republicans refused to leave the floor and a heated debate began with the mics and cameras off, they continued as a sign of protest for more than five hours.

Why not deal with, why not allow a vote? Is that not the purpose of our Congress? A recent editorial in the New Hampshire Union Leader says that recent polls show that more than 2/3 of Americans believe that we should be drilling for more oil. 2/3 is not some select few.

“I’m trying to save the planet; I’m trying to save the planet,” stated The Speaker when questioned. “I will not have this debate trivialized by their excuse for their failed policy.” “I respect the office that I hold,” she says. “And when you win the election, you win the majority, and what is the power of the speaker? To set the agenda, the power of recognition, and I am not giving the gavel away to anyone.” We ask the Speaker, are you talking, Save the Planet or Save Face and further one more question looming in my head.........

I would like to know if Senator Obama felt there might be a conflict of interest with Speaker Pelosi shutting down the vote, knowing she owns some 22,000 shares in the Clean Energy Fuels Corp(CLNE) which happens to be a natural gas fueling station company which of course is the big winner if we don't drill more! I would hate to think that the Speaker of the House might put financial gain ahead of the hard working taxpayers of the United States of America.

I would like to hear from you!

I didn't see anything in there about supporting and extending the renewable energy tax credits, which your competitor McCain supports. How can you expect change on the national level from millions of Americans if there is no support from the Federal gov't? The tax credits are about to expire at the end of the year, and a lot of solar companies will be in dire circumstances because solar energy will be too expensive for businesses and common consumers/households to purchase. It is already hard enough to convince people to spend the money on solar even with the tax credits in place. These need to be raised and given a guaranteed extension of at least one presidential term. If the solar companies go out of business but there is tax credits for the production of the solar panels, it sounds like there will be a lot of panels that no one can afford, and no one to sell them. The solar industry is relying heavily on the passage of the extension of the renewable energy tax credit, and yet your vote was not included in the Senate votes for several bills to offer an extension. If you are not willing to vote for it while a Senator, or support it in your energy plan, how can the entire solar industry stand behind you? I want to believe you will bring a change, but unless your energy plan is revised it is hard to believe that average Americans will be able to afford to help with the change.
