So, being new to the Atlanta area, I am very curious about my surroundings. I have visited in the past and know of China/Korea/Viet Town, but thats about it. So! I decided I would compile a list of places that I have discovered or been led to that are a 'must visit' for anyone thinking of traveling through ATL.
My first find is called Little 5 Points. This place is awesome. English punk, bohemia, grunge, gothic, and much more come together to form a small shopping district know as L5P.
The resturats and pubs here are all British inspired and the one we stopped in served mostly English food (a few items on the kid's list were not). They have great beer lists for all the beer enthusiasts.
We happened to eat at a place called L5P Pizza. We could hear the hip-hop music as we approached the place, so I was a little iffy. However!! When we entered 'hip hop' was no where in site. Small red booths lined the walls backed by old school pinball machines. A blank wall on the left was littered with flyers and pieced together ads featuring local bands, mostly punk rock, and other shows happening in the area. The guys working behind the counter are in their late 30s, fat, sweaty, and all wearing tshirts with some sort of profanity on them. A large sign above the cash register lists the menu. Pizza, any way you want it, and Calzones - who could ask for more?
I ordered a calzone with spinach and feta. I noticed two signs at the cash register: 1. Turn off your Fucking Cell Phone!!! and 2. We can refuse service to anyone. That means you.
They gave us, instead of a table number, a picture of a girl picking her nose and told us to place that on our table wherever we choose to sit. Our order came out about 15-20 later (they were super busy). The food was awesome! It's the kind of pizza you have to eat with a knife and fork. I got a boat of pizza sauce with my calzone.
Afterwards, we washed up in the one-room bathrooms. The girls room featured the painted image of Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver on the front door. Not creepy...
Anyways, the shops in the areas are all locally owned. You won't find a corporate store nearby (except for the oddly out of place Starbucks that was completely empty inside). Everything from vintage clothes stores to hand made crafts, art, books, music, bike shops, and so much more are jam packed into this place.
The top off the uniqueness of this setting, the entire surrounding neighborhoods are made up of English cottage style homes. They are so cute!
So, if you are artsy in any fashion, then is the spot you must visit on your next ATL trip. It's located in Decatur and if you smell smoke and hemp you know you are close.
