Who Gives Kudos:

Friday, March 10, 2006
The music we love was born some time ago, in a cotton field somewhere as people sang their sorrows and hopes. There was something spiritual in these songs, something bigger than the pain of life, something that inspired endurance. Over the years, these songs were transformed from Gospel and Blues, into Rock and Jazz, and later became every aspect of what is now called the music industry. As this transformation progressed further from its origins, it gradually began to lose the soul it was born with. The music around us became meaningless and empty, a wasteland of triviality where Gospel has been relegated as a footnote at music awards, a relic of where it all began. But things are destined to come full circle, and the time is coming for music to find its soul again. It is in this tradition that Sean Michel finds itself, a band longing for meaning in a culture struggling to do the same.

The music of Sean Michel began to be written in the summer of 2000, when Sean and longtime friend Stephen Tucker collaborated on a handful of songs. Sean would play these songs for friends and the occasional event on campus at Ouachita Baptist University where he studied Theology and Art. As graduation neared, Sean and friend Jay Newman planned to spend time in Namibia doing mission work. As a fundraiser for this trip, Sean recorded seven of these songs. The resulting disc was titled 'portraits', as each of the songs were meant to present a picture of Jesus Christ. Several hundred of these discs sold in a matter of months, and the next year, as Sean and Jay were preparing for a trip to China, it seemed only natural to print more of the same discs to fund that trip as well. It was in that summer of 2003, backpacking through the mountains of China that the vision for this music began to become clear. It was obvious that the songs were having a profound impact on people.  This wasn't all that surprising considering Sean and Jay's belief that the music was not merely from human sources, since many of the songs directly quoted Scripture. There was a spiritual quality to these songs that was poignant in their conviction, and it seemed at that point only natural to allow these songs to reach as many people as possible.

After they returned, Sean and Jay set about doing what was necessary to spread the message inherent in these songs.   Over the next several years, and all the way up till now, they have done just that.   There have been many incredibly talented friends who have come along in the journey.   All the while, Sean has continued to write more songs and continues to do what is necessary to allow these songs to connect with people.   It has become apparent over time that this will be a life long pursuit.   This passion for Truth through music is not something that can be communicated well through the fleeting hype of next-big-things or fad-of-the-minute popular singles.   No, Sean Michel is in it for the long haul, and intends to make music that will last.

The songs of Sean Michel are not meant for a market or genre. They are simply an attempt to find meaning through music in the same place the music we love first found its meaning: the Gospel. Their music presents the listener with equal parts reality and Truth, driven by deep emotion and conviction. These songs are meant to attack the evils in this world, while also inspiring hope, simultaneously piercing the heart and uplifting the spirit.

Saw you on American Idol... I knew that you were a believer before I EVER logged on to this site.  It had nothing to do with the song that you sang, but it had everything to do with the way you spoke with and responded to the judges.  I just knew.  We are called to be in the world, but not of the world.  Congratulations-- I will be watching for you in Hollywood.  Can't wait to throw you some votes.

Like the poster above, I knew before I found this myspace that you were a Christian. I will be voting for you every step of the way. You've obviously got a strong calling and anointing on your life. May God Bless you as you have already blessed me! Also, can you come play in Southern Ohio sometime? That is, if you don't get too busy too quickly. lol. God bless!

This is the bulletin I posted after seeing your performance...I'm still in awe by you, in a very spiritual way, I'm finding it strange...not often do people reach that far into my soul and leave such an impression without me giving birth to them...lol

Good luck and God bless...

Okay...I've totally jumped on the groupie wagon with this one. Ever since American Idol started I pretty much refused to watch as they chose all the p.c. mainstream wannabe stars. Then, along comes Darren, who, as many of you know works me like a cheap trick. I will do, say, and watch whatever he wants me to because, well, I love him just that much.
So, he gets me started watching this American Idol shit when out of the hall comes walking the homeless Jesus who we all knew would return...
Upon looking at this dude I knew there was something about him...and then when he said all of us are really poor inside...well, at that point I was ready to write home about him. What a genuinely humble man...
But THEN...THEN, HE SANG...IT WAS LIKE THE GATES OF HEAVEN OPENED. Okay...so maybe I'm over doing it just a bit...BUT this dude totally blew me away. So...as my friends I request that you view the video on my page...(BTW...I have totally dedicated my page to this dude...it's like alter of Sean)...Just listen to the video...If you hear what I heard and are as inspired as I am by him, watch the stupid show and dial the stupid number. The world would benefit by getting a sneak peak at Sean Michel...

When I saw you on AI. I have to admit that I was a little taken away but your appearance but at the same time, I thought WOW he's a pretty confident man to go to AI with that long hair and long beard. Not that there is anything wrong with it at all. You know how Simon can be about judging a book by it's cover. I absolutly loved your audition. I instantly became a fan. I just felt compelled to you for some reason. Your audition  gave me goosebumps and the only time I've felt that way is during praise and worship at church. I felt something  rise up inside of me whle watching you on the show. This morning I got a friend request from a profile that said AI and on it was your audition video. I watched and watched and watched it. Still I felt something I only feel during praise and worship. I got curious and searched myspace for you and found this page. I started reading and listening to songs and BAM......you're christian....you have a gift from God. He is going to use you for so much while you on this show. I believe that you will go FAR if not all the way. For the past 5 seasons I've always wanted an annointed Christian singer on the show in hopes of touching the millions of lives of the people who watch the show and this year will be that year! God Bless you Sean! You are amazing and I can't wait to see more of you. I have a lot of family in AR all over, I'll be calling my sister 2nite and maybe she will be able to make it out to see you tomorrow while you lead worship in Malvern.

God Bless you!

Amber

What is cool is that at Ouachita Baptist University, I remember back in 1999 jamming out with Sean, Jay Newman, BennieB (Ben Butler), and D-Wag (Dustin Wagley) outside of the Student Center on the bongos, djembe, congas, and me on the recorder. Those were the days!

Keep sharing the Gospel!

You were my favorite on the show, even before I looked at your myspace page.  You have such an amazing voice, with such a great humble personality.  I'm a part of the American Idol group on myspace, and the moderator picked you as the favorite too.  And now I'm looking at your page, totally excited that you are a man of God.  Your songs, bio and even personality is so truly inspiring.  I can't wait to see how far you go on the show and in life.  I'm so excited for you.  People all over the world are going to be seeing the Jesus in YOU.  I am keeping you in my prayers, Sean.  Keep up the great work!!

I love the music you sing i can remeber as a little girl id be pulled along a tobacco bag by my mom while the people in the field would sing gospel in the blues ways my uncle would be setting on a old log when it was break time and a few other family memebers would join in he would play the harmonica and the rest played the spoons and banjos it was great growing up around music.Daddy was a coal miner so i got my middle name from lorretta lynn (coal miners daughter) lol. There is nothing more comforting then listening to gospel music and the blues i miss being back home in Kentucky here in Arkansas i have to go all the way to Mountain Home just to even get close to the music i use to hear.My daddy is a baptist preacher who loves the lord and loves his gospel music.Keep up the good work and maybe with a little help we can get your music back on the shelfs lord knows we need it because the hard core music has taken over and i hate it.Sincelry Debbie in Arkansas

I have never written anything to anyone I do not know.I'm not even sure why I'm doing so now.I was so moved by your voice on the AI audition that I replayed it over and over.It didn't even dawn on me to look your name up on the computer until now.I know this sounds silly but I get goosebumps and tears well up when I hear you sing.I am drawn to hear you and I believe you have a beautiful gift and message.

Hey Sean, I saw your audition on American Idol and was impressed by your humility and talent. You really brought the rhythm, too. Terrific performance, very engaging.

I've listened to the band's MySpace music and loved it. You guys aren't merely playing music; you are worshiping the L-rd. You have got poverty of spirit and you aren't afraid to be totally abandoned before Him.

Would you consider doing a show in Kansas City any time? I'd definitely go.
