So here we are... how are you? Another day... how did you sleep? enough? feeling rested?
busy? happy? stressed? First of All... thanks to you all for coming out to our shows with the counting crowes and augustana and sara bareilles ... this has been our favorite tour so far... and we've really had a great time with y'all so far. Second of all... Someone responded to the last blog about this upcoming US election with the question "is it really all that simple?" and... i don't know the answer... part of me says Of course it's not simple... there are SO many people on this planet, and all of us are leading unique lives with totally different circumstances shaping our worldviews... but then on the other hand, if you look at it from a certain angle, that fact does indeed become simple... because if we realize that not everyone thinks about the world the way that we do, and we give people space to lead their lives according to their beliefs, then hopefully we can figure out a way to set up a structure in society that cares for everyone's health and basic needs. Now, i know that there are times when certain peoples worldviews include some kind of insane belief that people with opposing viewpoints from theirs need to be killed... for either economic gain, or in the name of God...

In either case, i hope we can all agree that it's just not right to go out and kill people... It seems hard to imagine that any divine force out there (an all powerful, all knowing entity that we could call God... or Allah... or Krishna... or Boran... or Shangdi... or Thixo, Gunab, or Tsui... or any other name that humans have given the unfathomable... go look on widipedia for Names of God) would actually want us to kill people who used a different name for IT... I like to think of the different interpretations of this divine force as cultural nicknames... they're endearing... sometimes people have lots of nicknames... it's not surprising that God would have lots too. God is very popular.

I don't know how to deal with those people who kill for the second reason... I'd like to just say "Look!!! No single person on this planet ACTUALLY knows what God's will is for us humans... but most people agree that God is interested in us leading basic moral lives... don't kill others... try not to cause suffering... etc... The golden rule sounds pretty good to me... or as the classic movie Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure so eloquently put it... "Be Excellent to Eachother... and... Party on Dudes!!!!"

So... to answer your question "is it really all that simple"... I guess i'm gonna go with: NO... it's not that simple when you try and deal with the whole world... obviously each of us as individuals can't really change the sweeping scope of this human drama... but we can do our part by trying to peaceful and loving in our own lives... looking deeply into our selves and finding our flaws and working to make them better... respecting each other... finding joy and spreading it... blah blah blah... :)

I love you guys... I love seeing all the different opinions... and i'm just trying to think about practical things that can be done to make the world a better place... Voting is an important one... especially in this election because things seem pretty chaotic right now. But to be honest, that's just the beginning because we all have a responsibility to do our part... I hope we can figure out a way to keep making things better before things get a lot worse...

Here's a video I wanted everyone to see to just put a simple light on a major problem of the political process, which is that important issues get overshadowed by petty and childish arguments...
check it out:

and also... here's a link to Joe Biden's speech from the DNC:

JOE BIDENS DNC SPEECH

Be excellent to eachother...

You are truly excellent to us, Jesse....I simply love the blogs you send to us....These blogs especially keep my mind racing in terms of what I want to do when November comes....just when I think I have come close to knowing who I am going to vote for, I learn a bit more and bit more, which makes it even tougher to fathom/understand.... Every vote counts and needs to be done for the absolute right reason.

Thanks again for giving us more to think on.

Much love

Venus

Awesome, Jesse! I like how you get us all thinking, and you are so right. Nothing about this is simple...I saw the speeches as they all happened and thought they were dynamic. But you are so right about all the BS overshadowing the important issues. Sheesh, can't we all just 'get along' and do what's right and just for our country? Let's pray that we can!

:)

Well, I'd like to think that Obama is smart enough to know how his remark would be taken, especially since it came so soon after Gov. Palin's own comment in her acceptance speech... about the difference between hockey moms and pit bulls being lipstick. Whether he meant the comment as some sort of jab or not, who knows, but some self censoring certainly couldn't have hurt. He had to know some people would jump all over it... so to complain now that they have jumped all over it seems silly to me.

I do agree, though... the whole political process does get bogged down by loads of nonsense, and we are all sick of it. Where is the respect on both sides? Do we always have to pouncing on each other and making mountains out of molehills all the time? It gets aggravating... Still, it won't stop me from being involved. We all have a great responsibility to our country, no matter what party affiliation we claim as our own.

Love to you guys! Loved you in Tinley Park last month! I hope you make it back to the Chicagoland area soon. :o)

Oh Jesse...how you make us think! I LOVE that!!! Actually, yours has always been my favorite blog. I feel you are a great thinker, with a big heart. You may be very opinionated, but you always see both sides and welcome people to draw their own conclusions. It is rare to find intelligence and heart rolled into one human being...kudos for being YOU Jesse! *wink

Anyway, this blog brings up a very good point. I would like world peace...but your quote from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure has the best advice for daily practice...and unfortunatey we often fail at it as opposed to succeeding in our treatment of others. Why is that? Ego? Always wanting to 'one up' the other? Or just plain greed? Why do we as a human race always feel we must be better than the next person. Who said...Just be the best YOU can be...maybe if we did that....our world would find peace. So maybe that's what we should do...strive to make those around us the best they can be...instead of trying to be better than them...

xoxo, Love and Kisses...Mary ♥

PS...See you in Northern Cali...you guys are bringing so much FUN to my life on this tour...thanks sooo much!!!

Well said - I've been saying this to people for years! If 'God' exists and his apostles wrote the bible - it clearly states that KILLING is AGAINST his will...no killing- or war...even in his name is actually condoned. Im not gonna bleat on about religion but it goes to say that 'God' is the only one with the power to decide. Men {mankind} does not have the psycological reasoning to deal with this power...or mostly any other power - though egotistically we think we do...

{ps I love to get my teeth into a good conversation...you can tell I love to talk because of the length of my own blogs...If you find yourself at a lose end you could always go take a peek at them...I also love to blog things in great detail.}

Duuuuuuuddde... Exxxcccellllllennnttt...
To quote my Man, Gandhi... "Be the change
You want to see in the World"... As human
beings... that IS our job. As residents of
this remarkable planet, at this remarkable time,
we must ALL be willing to open our minds and
our hearts and accept our responsibility as
individual parts of the universal energy that
can, and will, raise the consciousness of this
entire world... Sooooo... can one person
make a difference? Hmmmmm... You said it
best with the 'Golden Rule'. Perhaps it IS
just that simple.....

Such a great blog Jesse that keeps everyone's minds moving and thinking, instead of the useless junk that's probably usually sworming it, haha. I work in the field of psychology and plan on becoming a psychologist after a few more years of grad school, which is grueling, but worth the end reward. It is so interesting that you talk about worldviews because that is something we talk a lot about in the psychological world. To become a better therapist we always have to think about and put people's worldviews into our own perspective, which will be the way we truly can work to help the other person. It doesn't work if we don't acknowledge our own worldview, biases, stereotypes either. Everything is important because maybe if we can put ourselves in the other person's shoe, we would know that everyone is born and raised in a certain context, that yes might be extremely different from our own, but that does not make their views anymore wrong or right compared to our own. What I hope is that people, if they can think of the other person as coming from a different upbringing, then maybe they can then realize there is no need for hate or discrimination because everyone is different. The world needs to learn to respect the differences. It doesn't mean you have to be best friends, although, that would be nice, but it means to be able to live peacefully.

Thanks for the blog, it got me to re-evaluate my own beliefs and made me think :D Always a nice change from the crap you see or read these days!

Jesse, you know which movie you should see? Left Behind (1, 2 and 3). It's about the end of the world, worldpeace, faith, God, etc. I really think it will interest you!
I don't know much about politics (especially from another country), so I don't think it's simple at all :p
I hope you're doing great and that you will watch Left Behind! (if you like it, watch 2 and 3 too).
Much love and God bless, Dewi.

Darling Jesse, keep fighting the good fight! Keep your enthusiasm for continuing to put your ideas out there. I give you so much credit for not pushing a specific agenda, yet so clearly working to bring loving balance to your blogs (sharing your fears & concerns and then adding a goofy vid clip for something lighthearted). When you bring us information that is both scary and shocking, you'll add a list of examples of human greatness and the triumph of peoples' higher nature coming to the fore.

The passion you show at your M5 performances comes through so clearly and it is just a fantastic joy to witness. Thanks for your courage to do it over and over. The passion you share with us here also comes through so completely that I am moved; once again! Thanks for your courage to do it over and over again.

Looking forward to West Palm, remind Mr. Levine about National Underwear Day...

Oh come on Barack Obama knew exactly how his 'lipstick on a pig' would be interpreted.

To have you showcase his response to the reaction it caused like he was rising above it is an absolute joke.

Evidently Jesse you are just another sheep waiting to be led by this whole sham of a process.

What you should really be trying to inspire people about is voting third party. That is where real change is. There is no change in the Democrat or Republican Party's. Look at where the two-party political system has gotten America.

How depressing.

The American dream? As George Carlin said "It's called the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it.

Anything that reaches outside of one's self ceases to be simple because then we are dealing with individuals. No two people are exactly alike--not in the physical, emotional, psychological and especially not in the political sense.

When one person is left to make decisions which affect an entire nation, there are going to be ideals which clash with our individual doctrines, ideologies and beliefs. As Americans, our job is to hold our elected officials responsible for their actions. It is ultimately our responsibility to hold them accountable--that is why voting is so important. This election is so important because now is a time when more people have turned out to vote than ever before. Now is the time change CAN happen, but we have to make ourselves heard. We have to make the best decision we can by becoming informed, doing the research, and not being influenced by petty arguments and mudslinging.

Nothing in life is simple.

Thank you, dearest Jesse, for always being the voice of reason and impartiality in an otherwise insane and biased world. Have a beautiful day, and may you find peace and love in all that you do. Namaste.

much love,
R.

I am from Germany, and I wanted to share my thoughts about the election here in the United States...
Anyway, I have been watching the commercials by John McCain and Barack Obama, and I think that it is a strange way to do commercials, because they both mainly are just saying what the other candidate is doing wrong. I thought that they would say what their aims are, and what they want to change.
So, I am disappointed in some way...If I could elect one of them, I wouldn't be sure which candidate I would pick... It doesn't seem right to me, just to say what the other one is doing wrong, the commercials would be a lot better, if they would say what their aims are...

And concerning to the message of God: I don't really believe that there is a real "God", but I think that the stories "he" wants to teach all the peoples in this world are based on very good things, like not killing people and that that you should help people in need of help and that you shouldn't have any prejudices against people you don't know...
I am looking forward to your next blog :)

Me? Agnostic. I could go on but I won't (as no-one will probably read this anyway)...

As to the Obama clip, well I have to say I haven't been paying much attention to the whole US debacle that is politics. No offense meant there, I love the US but hate the theatrics that people call politics. It's bad enough in the UK but in the US it's all about showmanship (and we all know who really pull the strings in government... and no it's not the so called elected figurehead).

That said I was quite impressed with Obama and his attitude and views are refreshing. Lets hope he doesn't become infected with too large a dose of ego as the campaign progresses.

I agree with the importance of voting however feel sad that those who wish to gain power need to vilify others in order to achieve their goal. Like I said with Obama perhaps this will change. I am always optimistic...

Urf perhaps I'm jsut blue because my late summer vacation is over now :( Normal attitude will resume shortly I hope!

Thanks Jesse, always good to hear your views.
