We're in Rio right now... show tomorrow night... such a beautiful place... amazing mountains... the ocean... trees... birds... people smiling... a lot of poverty... traffic... a lot of traffic all over the world... I wonder if we'll ever find another planet we can get to safely and live on... wouldn't that be great... we'd know how to do a lot of things differently... we'd be able to figure out how many people the environment could comfortably and sustainably support... we'd use renewable energy sources like Wind and Solar from the beginning so we wouldn't have such a pollution problem... and then we'd have more time to figure out why it is that humans have such a hard time getting along...

FOR EXAMPLE>>>

I was just thinking about what a good opportunity we have now for opening up the minds of people who don't realize that their learned opinions of intolerance are not necessary... that they are just hurting innocent people, and adding negativity into the world. Tonight as I was reading all of the e mails I got about not letting the discriminatory law of Proposition 8 pass without a fight, I thought this is such a good way to start a positive dialogue with people who have different opinions... (especially when those opinions blatantly oppress and deny equal rights to a portion of the population)

Just in case you don't know what this is all about... Proposition 8 takes away from homosexual people the equal rights to marriage and all of the legal and financial benefits that come along with it... What makes it even worse is that those rights were recently granted to them by the California Supreme Court by a ruling that was made on May of 2008...

And YAY... wasn't that a great victory... yes... because... DUH... it's not right to discriminate against people... right? but NO... because people who want to deny equal rights to homosexuals spent the second most amount of money on any election category other than the presidency and it looks like they may have won (although as I write this... all of the absentee ballots have not been counted yet...)

ANYWAY... there are many constructive ways to voice your opposition to this mean spirited and unnecessary proposition... so keep a look out for the ways that you can try and talk to people who have these types of prejudices... because there have always been humans who tried to oppress things they didn't understand, or didn't like... but there is also a great precedent of people coming together to fight for equality and justice and freedom and all those good words...

Here's one petition you should sign ASAP...

Thanks for your time...

I am just so sad at the amout of money that was spent on both ends of 8 when there is so much dispair in this world... so many diferent uses that the money (over 59 million dollars) could have been used for.

I have to agree with Sadie here. Why don't we try to come to a place of agreement instead of concentrating on the disagreements? Why does sexual orientation take precedent over poverty, hunger and sickness? Jesse, wouldn't your time be better spent advocating ways to better the world on a higher level than the baser ones? If I understand correctly about the Proposition, it is already established that they have contractual rights, correct? Are we spending all this money to make sure that it is called Marriage between same sex? Who might have been fed with that money? What disease might have been eradicated with the needed research that money could have brought about? What about spending the money on a new energy resource that the whole world could benefit from? Why is sex more important than these others? Please elaborate...

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
That is so true, well put and on the mark.
People always miss the mark because they feel they are being "discriminated" against.

Gee, lets see, so which side here is placing issues of discrimination (sarcastic dick quotes omitted) in front of other issues? Oh yeah, that's right, the one making a STATE WIDE REFERENDUM against gays.

And that is such a B.S. argument.

So you are basically saying that we have to chose whether we will discriminate against gays or end poverty.

I personally voted no on 8, I was simply stating that the amount of money that was raised to make sure that the proposition passed broke my heart. I just think that if I could have a conversation with God and we were to put Prop 8 and some of the other horrors of the world on a scale with all that money in front of us, I can't imaging Him saying "By all means, make sure that there is enough television coverage, make sure that there are enough signs and flyers, those starving infants will be just fine..."

This is like the telephone game--I got what you were saying sadie, the next person seemed to take the fact that you said that it was a shame that people had to spend money to fight this thing and make the logical leap to basically say that what you were saying means that "we shouldn't waste our time fighting against--cough, cough, "discrimination.""

God, I think God made me wake up early this morning on my day off and post on a myspace page all day long.

I'm just aghast at the fact that opposing a blatantly discriminatory act could be controversial among people who enjoy the funky, intense, soulful jams of Maroon 5. But I guess that if you sell millions of records, you are going to attract the occasional hater.

The California Supreme Court overturned what the citizens of California had already voted on several years ago... and, given the opportunity, the people voted again and Prop 8 won out. Courts need to stop abusing their authority in this country... It started with Roe v Wade and has been downhill ever since.

Love you guys but please keep in mind that some of your fans have differing opinions...

A slim majority of people in this country need to stop abusing their authority to vote by using it to take away rights from people who have a different sexual orientation than they do. This is an act of bigotry, plain and simple. These arguments defending the mildness of this law remind me of defenses of laws that oppress women in Saudi Arabia.

Some people had differing opinions about segregation in the 1950's. What would have happened if people would have walked on eggshells back then to avoid hurting those people's feelings?

What a lot of people fail to realize is that the courts are not overturning these propositions just because they feel like it; they're doing it because these propositions break the US Constitution in a number of different ways.

Everyone is promised equal rights under the law and Proposition 8 goes against that. Also, the separation of Church and State. Let's face it, the main reason people are so up in arms is because the Bible says marriage is to be between a man and a woman. However, this should not carry over into government. Not everyone in this country is of the same religion and therefore should not have to follow one religion.

Another thing that gets me about us (californians)....the Yes voters keep talking about the sanctity of marriage and they don't want that ruined.....yet our divorce rates are high! how can people who cant respect the sanctity of their own marriage dictate what others can and can't do?

As an african american and as a woman I understand the struggles my ancestors went through for rights. November 4th was bittersweet because one group got victory while another suffered defeat. I am an extreme ally and i will do whatever it takes to restore justice where it belongs. This is why I want to go to law school....because there are still folks out there who just don't understand (Not saying you specifically, Puglover (your opinions are completely valid and respected), but those who just vote for it because they still think that their personal beliefs are more important than millions of people's lives (who won't affect their own in any way).

Might as well say they cant be taught in the same institutions as straight people while we're at it. Or hey! let's make homosexuals drink from different water fountains and eat in separate part of restraunts.....let's take Prop 8 and run with it!
*Huffs and leaves chanting anti-discrimination chants from a rally November 5th*

...if you don't like gay marriage....dont get one!!!!

thank you so much for sharing you views on this travesty. i personally live in texas, but have been hearing and reading alot about prop 8 and i think its so sad what has happened. its like when you give a kid a puppy and let them name it and grow attatched to it and then in a few months say, well youre mom and i voted and were gonna have to take that puppy that you love so much away now. its rediculous. i dont understand what the big deal about gay marriage is. first of all it IS a civil rights issue. secondly its a matter of seperation of church and state, why shouldnt it be legal? bc the bible says that its wrong. i am believe in God but dont understand why this has to be the final say when it comes to someones life. maybe they dont think how you think.
and i dont want to fight with anyone bc thats the last thing we need at this time, so ill just call it debate. but puglover....jesse and the rest of the band have every right to voice their opinions and whats important to them. they respect your opinion so you should respect theirs. theyre not trying to change your mind. hes just trying to get his feelings out in the open...isnt that what you do when you write a blog??? if you dont like it then dont read it. this band is heavy into politics and human rights and other issues. i dont know how big of a fan you are but if you are a regular reader of this blog then i think you might know that by now. he isnt being biased, or pushy, just giving some information out to some people that may be interested in it. if you dont like it then dont read it. your comments were taken into consideration, and while you may be right in a sense, didnt you voice your opinion just as jesse had?

i just think that people need to put their selves in other peoples shoes and realize how wrong it is to take away someones right because of their sexual orientation. i thought that we grew up in a generation that was more tolerant. and who knows, maybe one day we will look back and think of how crazy it is that this was even an issue, just as i was growing up not believing that the civil rights movement even had to take place.

PEACE AND LOVE. AND TOLERANCE.

It's a shame to see how some parts of the US seem to go back to medieval times :-(

We had the same discussion about gay marriage in Germany and it is possible now. Not with ALL the same rights as a "normal" marriage, but it is a big step.

I really don't see why people have a problem with gay marriage. I mean, I am not going to get married to a woman just because I can. I am straight. And it's the same the other way round... nobody forces a man to marry another man. So if you are NOT gay, leave it up to them whether they wanna get married or not. If you ARE gay: be sure there are many people out there supporting you.

We are on your side!!

Love,
Silke (from Germany)

PS: Thanks for bringing up this topic, it is important that celebrities voice their opinion about so called difficult topics- this shouldn't even be one!

Yes, I understand that the Prop 8 says all of that. It still comes back to someone else determining what to call my relationship. If people don't want to refer to my marriage as a marriage, that's fine. You still don't have the right to tell ME what I can call it. So, the Prop 8 needs to get the hell on and diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiie today.

Dearest Jesse,

I love how open-minded you are and how much you believe in equality for all. I must admit that yes, I have been raised with those views and ideas and although I don't believe that marriage between same sex partners is "true" marriage, I don't believe that homosexual couples should be denied the same legal/financial rights that a "marriage" affords a heterosexual couple. I'm not against homosexuality at all. My beliefs say that whatever you do is up to you and judgement is left to the 'God' you believe in. I don't support denial of rights in any way shape or form. I sincerely hope that something is done to afford homosexual couples the rights that heterosexual couples enjoy. I just hope not too much emphasis is placed on the label of "marriage." Personally, I don't believe in marriage anyway, I don't think it works anymore. People have become to selfish and have become a disposable society.

Sad thing is I truly believe that homosexual relationships have a better chance of lasting than heterosexual relationships. Maybe because they have been denied the simplest of rights and have had to work harder for their relationships, I don't know. Whatever happens, I sincerely hope that some kind of solution is reached.

Love is Love! No one should be made to feel that their love is less than it is just because of who they love. That is so wrong and I believe that love should be encouraged and supported no matter what!

Enjoy your travel, keep blogging and opening minds, dearest. I hope that you are all enjoying yourselves. Take in the atmosphere and the ambience. Embrace the culture and share your insights with us. As always.... be healthy, be careful and BE SAFE!!!

much love to you all!
R.

What lies behind us, and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

I have been astonished that men could die martyrs for their religion -
I have shudder'd at it.
I shudder no more.
I could be martyr'd for my religion
Love is my religion
And I could die for that.
I could die for you.

OK, seriously stupid question, ....can I sign this petition as I live in Texas??? I believe that this proposition should be re-evaluated but I don't know if my signature will be voided because I'm not a registered voter in the state of California.

BTW, Queen Victoria, thank you for your comment. ;D Only speaking from my heart. I don't ever plan on getting married. Just don't believe in the institution anymore, and though I was raised Baptist and have those teachings so deeply ingrained in my psyche, I stopped practicing organized religion when I was 12. I have studied so many different religions and doctrines and the sad thing is so many share some of their most basic principles but they still can't live without attacking what they don't care to understand. I believe in LOVE, GENEROSITY, PEACE, HOPE, and NATURE!! Everything else is trivial.

much love to my M5 boys!!

Yes Homosexuals should have the same rights...strange that this should predominate your mind whilst you are in Rio....I have been there & Sau Paolo & what preoccupied my mind was the absolute poverty in a land with obvious wealth...families camping out in the entrances of skyscrapers, the street kids running like wild dogs ( & yes reminiscent of India (where I have spent a year & half) where people still smile when they have nothing.
I was mugged in Rio...had a gun put to my head & he got £1000 (1st & last time I used Travellers cheques...I just cashed them in) I was told that is about how much a doctor makes in a year...I wouldn't advise you go to the favelas....but thats where many people live...in corrugated shacks....not the 5* Westernised Hotel you probably wrote this in....Look around you mannnnnnn....American Politics can wait........

Your right though- why should we sit back and watch things happen that we agree or disagree on, when we ourselves can speech out and let our opinion and thought be heard. We want the world to change to better ourselves, economy and overall to make everyone lives a little easier. It only take the power of one to make a change or difference, to be heard and to fight for what they think is right!!

Aaaahhh..... Jesse.....
How we LOVE you!!! Breathtaking picture, btw!!!
Ugh..... I have a gay brother-in-law who is the
most beautiful man, inside and out, anyone would
ever wanna meet! He's been in the same relation-
ship (bi-racial, btw) for 12 years! They are super
successful, have a couple of houses together, just
opened a winery together, have 2 dogs together
that may as well be their children..... It is soooo
distressing to think of what would happen to all
their wealth and assests they've built together if,
god forbid, something were to happen to one of
them, or even if, yikes, they were to decide to
part ways!!! Right now... they have no legal rights,
even though they ARE pretty much "MARRIED" in
many more ways than the definition would imply!
And moreover... He is the Godfather of my little
4 1/2 year old daughter! Of all our family members,
HE, and his partner (who I ADORE) are the ones
who would love her the most, and care for her the
best - I'm CERTAIN of that!!! So, too, god forbid
anything would happen to her daddy and me, and
little princess is bestowed upon 'the boys', and
then something happened between THEM... ugh!
Where does that leave little missy... who BOTH the
boys love dearly??? UUUHHHGGGHHH!!!!!! It's
very disturbing, really!

God, Dude... Again... It really all boils down to the
"Golden Rule"! 'Do unto Others'... and "Judge
not... lest Ye be judged"!!! Back-to Basics!!! 'Keep
your LAWS off my BODY'!!! And I'll say it again...

LLLEEEGGGAAALLLIIIZZZE FFFRRREEEEEEDDDOMMM!!!

OOYYYYYYY!!!!! Ah... Jesse... We love you bruuthaaah!
Keep you and the other Maroon 4 safe down there!!! We
MMMMMMIIISSSSSSSSSSSSS YOU!!!!! MWAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post election comments have really made me question.... do we really live in the land of freedom??? Because if they had it their way then the rest of us would be forced into the "box" way of thinking... and if you ask me that is not FREEDOM.

This whole argument is absolutely ridiculous! The whole problem is the word 'Marriage' because its supposed to hold some holy religious significance. If you ask me that went out the window when the divorce rate hit 60% but since people can't seem to let go of that notion I propose making all unions in this country 'civil unions'. That way every citizen can file their taxes the SAME way and everyone has the SAME LEGAL rights as it should be and the churches can sort out who they allow to be 'married' on their own without any interference from the federal government.

I'm not super religious, and I don't believe in organized religion but I do believe in God. Isn't this what God intended? He created a world that was beautiful for us to occupy and we have destroyed it, not just with pollution but with hatred and intolerance.

I wish there was a do-over button we could push or another planet we could start over on that people had to pass a morality test to live on. But then isn't that a form of discrimination in itself? I've seen people live in poverty and I've been there myself and as someone who desperately wants a better world to live in, the options just aren't there for most of us. We can't afford to do the things we deem as right. But we can afford human kindness and empathy and patience and virtue and hope and knowledge. Parents need to teach their children these things and stop letting a tv or a daycare raise them. Children don't have their own op pinions, they listen to their parents and repeat what they hear.

As far as gay rights go, it fits in with everything else. There, sadly, is no such thing as equality. If there was, everyone would have the same rights. There wouldn't be all of the "programs" that are just for a certain group of people. We the people, are keeping everyone separated by only handing out certain rights to certain groups of people. How about Human rights, where everyone has the freedom to choose their destiny? For example, college funds just for blacks, I want to go to school too...If we came out with a college fund for poor white people that would be deemed racist, what makes theirs so different? It seems that people have taken the minorities and given them more options to prove that we don't discriminate anymore, but then it's closing out other groups of people....Equal rights for all, that is the only solution. Who are we to pick and choose?

Fear! It's all about fear and lack of understanding. It was fear, back in the day, fear of long hair, religious freedom and color of skin that created the great social divide in these United States. It seems the only way for those who live in ignorance and fear, to keep their opinions and agendas in the forefront, is to propagate fear into the mainstream! But is now seems a new day is coming. Although the recent voting down of gay rights is a tragic misstep on the path to an enlightened social conscience, the voting in of an African-American, as President of the United States of America, seems to to be a monumental step forward in the journey of enlightenment we are all taking together. We must be patient with those who do not understand. We must try to help them understand that living in fear is not living at all. Fear is binding. We choose to promote freedom in this country. Fear is not freedom, but a prison of the soul. We have taken a giant leap in the direction of freedom of ignorance to color. The world is watching, and celebrating, with us is this amazing moment in history. We are better for it. Let's not be reactive, but proactive, to any of this. Let's join together and continue to educate...

I live in California and I am shocked and disappointed by the decision. It was just passed earlier this year! Are that many people that fearful, divisive and hypocritical? People, no matter their sexual orientation, deserve to be treated equally and receive equal rights (hmmm, this reminds me of another example....discrimination based on color of skin). Don't we teach tolerance in schools? 53% of CA isn't walking that talk it seems.
Yes, there are other issues in the world that need attention and funding but that doesn't mean something that directly affects a group of people should take a back seat and not speak up about something that is important to them! Our global economic and environmental issues are going to take time to address and everyone needs to be involved.
JRC~ are you guys checking out any ecolodges, environmentally friendly places, using fuel efficient transportation? We gotta support and encourage these practices when we travel...gotta reduce our imprint. I don't know much about what Brazil is working on to that effect.
Have a great time!

I really really like the music you guys make. However, can I suggest that being the big Beatles fans you are that perhaps you write some enlightening songs like John Lennon. I am all about the tainted love songs you guys write, but it is not the most important thing in our existence... just a thought. One love, Andie

*APPLAUSE*

You guys have been my favorite band for some time now. I cannot tell you how *thrilled* I am to read this post. It means so much that a musical group that I admire so much is dedicated to an issue that is so important to me!

I am shocked, astounded, and deeply saddened that Proposition 8 passed in California. I am hopeful that we are on the road to equality for the group that has had this fundamental right stripped from them only months after it finally bring granted. It seems as if America has taken two steps forward in electing our first African American President only to take three steps back (in the approval of Prop 8). There was a time when America thought that would never be possible and we have, in many ways, overcome that era. It is my hope that we one day overcome this one as well.

Again, I cannot tell you how much it means to me for someone with your platform to speak out on this issue! I feel confident that if we ban together, our nation can one day overcome this unfounded bigotry. Thanks so much for providing the link to the petition - that is a very positive step!

With love and respect,
♥ Christy

I have always loved the music of Maroon 5, but to know they are involved and care about overcoming discrimination adds new valus to my appreciation...
