Hello Freedomphiles!  Interesting news out of The Washington Post today.  Apparently, UCLA has done the most exhaustive study of marijuana and cancer ever done in the history of the world.  Their findings:

The new findings "were against our expectations," said Donald Tashkin of the University of California at Los Angeles, a pulmonologist who has studied marijuana for 30 years.

"We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use," he said. "What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect."

(...)

Earlier work established that marijuana does contain cancer-causing chemicals as potentially harmful as those in tobacco, he said. However, marijuana also contains the chemical THC, which he said may kill aging cells and keep them from becoming cancerous.

This backs up the findings in other studies, like the one I wrote about that concluded it to be one of the "most successful treatments of neuropathic pain" in the world.  Or the study that says it can halt the spread of breast cancer.

Thanks to Travlr for the tip.

You no that it is only illegal so that the government can put people in prison and conduct paramilitary style raids, right? It has nothing to do with the effects or side effects.

I'm still not too keen on purposely inhaling smoke. Our lungs were not designed to handle a great deal of particulates. That's why we have noses and mucus and coughing and sneezing. Of course, I would do it if I were sick and could expect that it might cure me or relieve my symptoms. But as a healthy person, I can't see wanting to smoke just for a high. Especially when I can eat chocolate instead. Or even give me a pot brownie.
