 Hello Freedomphiles! The image above is of the lovely Dominique Swain from 1997's Lolita. In that scene, young Lolita is just playing innocently in the yard, but on the porch, Jeremy Irons' Humbert Humbert is watching, stewing in a heady brew of pedophilic obsession.
It's a good lesson to the young girls out there. No matter how innocuous the actions or image, it can be like heroin to those who prey on innocence. This is the lesson that Officer John Gay of the Cheyenne (WY) Police Department was trying to teach when he gave an assembly to the kids at Windsor High School.
But, as they say, the devil is in the details:
Office Gay does his job by ridiculing girls from the school. He snoops around, checking out the various web pages the students had on different social networks. Any photo that he thought proved his point was downloaded. This sounds like a stalker; he thinks it was police work.
Shaylay Nordic was one of Officer Gay's victims. He trolled through her MySpace page and downloaded a photo of her. She was in a t-shirt and shorts and was bending over to point to pair of new shoes. On two different occasions at her school he blasted that picture across a screen for all the students in the assemblies to see.
Officer Gay told the students that this photo would entice sexual predators --- perhaps, it certainly got his attention. He ridiculed Ms. Nordic and implied that she was inviting a rapist. That's how the young woman saw it. Her father was furious and said, "He took a pretty innocent picture and made it look sleazy." He said the police officer "belittled, embarrassed and humiliated" his daughter.
As if that weren't bad enough, Shaylah relates that "He started telling me that old guys were jacking off to my pictures, and that I was pretty much asking to be raped." He said that he gave the picture to an inmate, who said he would "tear her apart." Shaylah ran from the assembly crying.
Was that a cold bucket of perspective in the face of Officer Gay? Apparently not:
"So then he saw her leave the auditorium in tears, and mockingly he said, 'I'll just call her and see if she'll come back because I have access to all her information so I have her phone number right here.' So, he called her from the stage after she left the auditorium in tears to come back to the auditorium. He was just super harsh and very inappropriate."
Thank God Officer Gay is around to keep girls like Shaylah from being victimized, hurt, and humiliated.
