hello, there...
and here we are again. christmas eve. late night. we've been here before. "a christmas story" is on repeat ad infinitum on tbs, a small part of me remembers when i believed in santa claus, fox news anchors are in a church reading bible passages just in case you didn't fully understand that they are aggressively appealing to a christian conservative base (though tonight for some reason i'm ok with this as "news"), and i am home from a great late night holiday party with my oldest friends from home... and i (very) randomly just flipped the channel to lifetime and came upon a holiday movie called "noel" exactly as a song of mine called "something" was playing in the background. that was the first big money ($500) i ever made for a song four years ago. weird how it all comes back. and i think i just made like five cents for that airing, too. ka-ching! one more piece of gum for this guy.
is it also weird that i kind of want to order the new "alvin and the chipmunks" late night infomercial cd called "undeniable" with a cover of "living on a prayer"? hmm. if there's def leppard on there, i'm in like flynn.
i feel lucky. lucky that i have a family to come home to in nashville, lucky that i have old friends with a few decades of history between us, and lucky that i get to do what i love for a living. it's been a great year. i got to tour once again in the states and europe on the hotel cafe tour with some of my best friends, and, right as i decided to take a break at home and start writing my next record, a dutch dj named tiesto decided to remix my song "ride" and turn it into a dance floor hit across europe and the middle east (cuz he's huge there), which then allowed me to sing with him at bonnaroo and at the 02 arena in london. i felt like a won a contest. crazy. tiesto's world is so far outside what i do, yet there is a fantastic energy to anyone who can get thousands of people to dance like the night's not going to end. i just wrote a new song with him that is a perfect mix of both of our styles of music, and i think it'll be on his new record next fall. here's to all things dutch...
i've achieved what i set out to do creatively in so many ways, but, with 75% of my new record now done, i feel like there's a lot more to do. i grew up in the last couple years on the road - maturity, wisdom, whatever - and it's finding it's way into the songs. even though i've been writing songs as long as i can remember, i feel like i just got started with this music thing, and this new record is the beginning. i play music because i have to... because nothing makes me feel as complete as writing a song. however, that on it's own doesn't allow me to do this professionally. i'm a craftsman, a builder. i get to put together ideas and melodies that mean something to me, but a song really starts to live once i let it go into the world, once it's not mine anymore. a house ain't a house until there's someone living in it, ya know? i get to do this for a living because of you. in a time when most people steal music, i have managed to sell a couple records and keep going because of you. because you listen and care and write and talk about music and live with music and believe that a good song can make a day or a long drive better or make you feel understood when things aren't so great. i understand because that's what music does to me, for me. i'm glad there are people out there like you, and i hope you never go away. more than ever, musicians need you, and on behalf of everyone that does what i do for a living, thanks.
wherever you are in the world tonight, whatever your religion or beliefs, i hope you're happy. i hope you have family or friends nearby or at least some peace on this evening. and if you're up all by yourself watching "a christmas story" on cable for the fifth time, then now you have a blabbing friend like me to spew a bunch of sentimental nonsense your way and pass the time. i promise i'll be (slightly) cooler tomorrow, but not tonight - tonight i'm waiting for a sleigh to hit the roof.
and to all a good night... -CB
