Current mood:  chipper

Yo! Been pretty effin busy over last couple of months - September was spent in Terry Britten's amazing studio in Richmond. It's brimming with vintage gear, an old E.M.I desk(Pink Floyd-Dark side of moon era) and billions of guitars, old analog gear, a treasure trove of effects pedals(nick, like a kid in a toy shop!). The Sessions have been pretty amazing, we certainly have an embarrassment of riches where material is concerned! We will need to do a lot of listening over the next few months before we reconvene in the New Year to pull it all together! Plenty of hour long jams! and killer choons! we just need to get the balance right.

Last week kicked off with the Q awards-fckin weird dipping your toes into such showbiz events-think that will be my last venture to such affairs-I had to leave before the dinner was served-who wants to eat that shit when you can eat pies! What the fck am I on about-just had to leave and get the fck outta that place! Maaaaaan!

Anyway, the remainder of the week was spent rehearsing"up north" (what a freakin luxury to make music away from that big London place!) with Nick and Pete. Richard will be joining us later when we've gotten the music together. Gotta say - twas the greatest few days playin' old tunes! Started with Life's an Ocean and gotta say it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up! So far we got a short list of about 20 odd tunes to pool from for these first gigs, in no particular order we played-Make it till Monday, Virtual world,She's a Superstar, Gravity Grave,This is Music, A New Decade, On your Own, History, Stormy Clouds,Life's an Ocean, A Northern Soul, All in the Mind!(Sounded Amazing), B.S.S.,Drugs don't Work, Sonnet, Lucky Man, Come on, Weeping Willow, Rolling people, Velvet morning, Space and time,Man Called sun, Starsail and new ones, should I give titles away yet?fck it-Sit and Wonder,Judas,Appalachian Springs. Other new ones we are planning to do - maybe-Mona Lisa and Rather Be. I don't want to give the game away(already have) but I would like some feedback on all this-Now's the time to speak up! What have we missed that u wanna hear? Is it too early to play new stuff? do we skip the obvious? do we do the obscure? Let me know! Later.....Si Jones.

Slide Away, Country Song, She's A Superstar, Stamped. I mean, fuck it, bring on the rock! It's almost enough to make a grown man weep. Play as much of the new stuff as you can, I say. It's always nice to get a little taste before full purchase. Good luck with it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed to ward off the voodoo.

Great to hear you are rehearsing so much early stuff. Watched 'Life's An Ocean' on Jools again recently - Fuck Me! Would 'Longest Day' be too much to ask? Love the bass on that track...

cant wait to hear the new tracks!! if you threw this time into the setlist it would be amazing, but as long as you play weeping willow that will be the best thing ever. glad you've been playing all in the mind - you never did this enough first time round. what are the new songs sounding like? storm in heaven or urban hymns era?

I'm a broken record, but come to New York. New York. New York.

Gotta agree with this...Let the Damage Begin live would be a killing wall of emotion and noise.

In fact there's so many B-sides that could make it onto the list (an aspect that always showed the quality of musicianship for you guys was that "B-sides" held their own against any other tune)...

"Three Steps" has to be a contender for a show opener, given the glaring self-referential predictive nature of the song to where we will find ourselves in November.

"Where the geese go" has always been early morning beauty.

...but of course let's go to that golden period of B-sides from the Northern Soul period

"Let the damage begin" (as already mentioned), "You and me", "I see the dorr", "Litttle gem"

and nothing could close a show in anyway better than "Back on my feet again". No emotional pressure Si but I took my best mate Steve to Sheffield in 97, the Verve captured him and helped him love. He met his soul mate Clare a year later, became engaged to her in early 99 and then died suddenly of a brain anurism. She was destroyed and went into the darkness as far as it is possible to go. I managed to help lead her back to life and "Back on my feet again" was the first song that enabled her to smile again...so if you want to ensure you break someone down into tears (but in a good way) on the 9th then know that she will be there in the audience as my wife (with Steve watching over.

Si, you sound stoked about playing again. What I'd give to be a fly on the wall at those jammin' sessions...

I think thats a pretty impressive setlist as it is. As you've never played it live before do you think This Could Be My Moment would get played? Its got such a celebratory feel, perfect for the comeback gigs i think.

Generally the feeling seems to be among the Verve-ians I know is that you'd be best to play a few new tunes, and mix it mainly with whatever your 'now sound' is. So if you've gone back to the early psychedelic sound (which everyone seems to think you will have - why else would Nick agree to do it otherwise?!!) then plenty of early singles/ASIH stuff, if its more poppy then UH songs would work best. Any road we trust your judgment :)

very exciting stuff, some amazing tracks you've been jamming. I think this tour is really gonna bring out the true fans so id keep thinks maybe new and obscure, would be much appreciated. On the 'is it too early to play new songs front' i guess it depends when your thinking of releasing some new material, as you know, as soon as you play em live they are gonna be everywhere an people are quick to judge, but fuck it, you guys are class live an no doubt you must be buzzin to get back out there. where up north you jammin? If you fancy a night out in Liverpool giz a shout...the scallies are quite mellow this time of year. Peace

I think you guys should do whatever you want. Us fans are always going to be up for it. It must make you all feel great to be honing those musical daggers, again. Even though I will be missing out on your upcoming gigs of legend, I would be up for "Let The Damage Begin" and "Mover". That's just to give you an idea, since you had mentioned obscure. Whatever. I'm just glad that you are feeling the super buzz again. I saw the You Tube clip of you all...nice to hear you get on the mic! Have a good time, Simon.

Blimey, if we could have 'Star Sail' to start off with and end with 'Gravity Grave' with 'A man called Sun' just before, there would be a fcking storm in Blackpool never mind in Heaven, bloody hell it would be like those early Verve gigs I saw in Liverpool all those years ago. I might even have to nip backstage and give it the old 'remember me?' all over again...

Hoping to hear 'Holy are You' as the walk on too...or am I asking for too much?

As much new stuff as possible, for sure...

Just hope this postal strike sorts itself out and my tickets don't go missin...

I think the song selection is great..but hey, there's no such thing as a collection of bad Verve songs!!! But Since you're asking for opinions, maybe throw in "Blue" and "Butterfly" if you like. And by the way....its absolutely not too early to hear new stuff!!! Just play what feels right!!! ...But I was wondering that would there be a possibility that some previously unreleased tracks like "Black and Blue" or "Mover" showing up on future albums?

Just that you've pulled out She's a Superstar blows me away. There's been lot's of speculation on what you'd be playing and that ones been on a lot of "Hope to hear it, but not likely to happen" lists. It would be perfect show for me to hear Superstar (extended of course), GG, Drive You Home, MCS, All In The Mind, Stormy Clouds...just...everything...you've made so much good music. Really want to hear new stuff. I'm so curious about it. From the enthusiasm you guys have I've gotten really excited about it. I think it would be great to throw in a couple of totally unexpected songs like No Knock on My Door or Where the Geese Go. Sorry about the long message, but it's really cool that you're looking for fan input. Seems to be a rare thing.

Wow "Starsail" and a "man called sun" 2 of my favorites! Please play some B-sides! More than anything I just want to hear you guys "Jam" and improv ! I really love the Funkadelic/Krautrock/hip hop vibe of your jams. That was always my favorite aspect of the Verve, the ability to take a song anywhere. Live versions of your music are always exciting because of that fact, you can expect the unexpected ! Most other bands show up ,play there album note for note, than bounce. Please dont wait to long to come to the states!

As much i love UH i just think certain songs have been overplayed, i'd love to hear rolling people and come on though. As long ya's play gravity grave i'l be made up! fuck, i'l be made up whatever ya's play to be honest.

My favourite three aside from the obvious ones would be Let the damage begin, Weeping Willow and All in the mind but I could go on with a never ending list.. Can't you play for hours like Bruce Springsteen and include them all in the set? Obvious, obscure, Bsides, Csides EVERYTHING!!! Just the fact that is gonna happen and you'll be playing those songs again is so good that makes everything impossible seem possible!
