Thursday, September 25, 2008
The future of giving. It is funny to think about charity today, what does it really mean to be philanthropic? Today we buy goods from across the globe, we touch base with others on a daily basis from our cell phones … and through Myspace. We trade ideas and philosophies with people in our classroom and in classrooms across the world in an instant. So why if there are so many ways that we use technology and our growing access to information and ideas for our daily life – why can't we use those same daily actions and interactions to reach those in need.

We went to Africa for the first time in mid 06. We went there to learn, as the laymen that we were. We wanted to see for ourselves with our own eyes the tragedies that had been reported by CNN. What we saw was not a statistic. We saw real people and real solutions in action and what blew us all away was that there was less despair than we had anticipated. We saw doctors with ideas, kids with hope and the resolve of committed aid workers.

Our journey to support AIDS research began for real when we decided to step into the game in a way that was in our sphere of influence. We used what we had, our music. Thousands of downloads meant a real impact for many children fighting AIDS and poverty – that was the beginning.

That one song and the idea of the giving what we could and reaching others with ideas and passion, has lead us to do one mile barefoot walks before every concert on our tours since last fall – we have walked 76 miles barefoot in snow, and sleet, in blistering heat and rain … and thousands of people have joined us. Through the efforts of MANY that have walked with us we have helped a great company called TOMS shoes give thousands of shoes. The goal now is to log every mile that is walked and make every mile count for a dollar – given by us to a cause that makes a real difference on the ground.

Our walk is not fantastic, it is not grand, but that is exactly why it matters. We are a generation that is over prepared and under estimated. What would happen if each of us just took the walk. Join us for the next week and see what happens.

Walk on – HANSON

thank you for your spirit of giving back to the less fortunate. i know you will be blessed for it.

i'm a 3rd grade teacher in a low income school. everyday, i put my all into helping future generations. it is more rewarding than any job i could ever imagine. it is not always easy, but when i see in my students' eyes that they are learning, it touches my heart every time.

thank you for finding an area where you can be of great help and for being willing to serve.

your fans are behind you and proud of you. God bless you in all you do.

Even if I can't attend your concert (for the first time in 11 years) I will most CERTAINLY attend any walk that happens here in Pittsburgh. I will be a fan of who you are and what you represent in a generation that has become so lost in its own ideas and unable to find their way. You have been a part of my life, half of my life, and the reason I am still alive. I will gladly walk so that others may live as well!

Wow, How mature! I got to meet Hanson on the 21st at the HOB and I took the walk at SMU and I must say not only are they the most inspirational men but they are kind hearted. Their music has purpose and meaning. I am proud to say I'm a Hanson fan. It's a shame people like IHB do not take the time to listen to their music or find out about them as musicians. They aren't the MMMBop boys anymore, they are about so much more, and I wish people could see that! Hanson you are amazing,I hope you continue on with these wonderful walks because you really can change a persons life with just ONE mile. Thank you Hanson for your wonderful music and Compassion! I am inspired by all you do.

I wanted to thank you on being not only my favorite music group since i was 5, but for being such a great inspiration to me and for being an amazing example for others aswell. Isaac, Taylor, & Zachary Hanson, I admire you more & more each day. I look to you 3 as icons of the century. You 3 in the end will go down in history as not "pop/rock stars who made millions of dollars from their cd's sold and used it to buy Mink coats and fancy cars and houses" but only as 3 men who created and devoted their lives to other people of all kinds who needed a helping hand. From the first day I laid my eyes upon you 3 men in 1997 I knew that god must have spent a little more time on you. The truth is, if there were more men and woman like you in this world then I truly believe that our world would be at somewhat some form of peace. I can't believe how incredible you 3 are, every time I see/hear about the walks and what you 3 do I just want to be a BETTER person in this world and I swear to you that I live my life through the eyes of the lord. But somehow I know that I am blessed to have been given you 3 as Role Models to me [and to so many others] in every day life. You changed my life when I came to know you 3 in 1997 when I was just 9 years old, and today you sill continue to change and help form the person I am today in 2008 [I am 21 now]. I think Hanson deserves a Peace award of some sort, and although I know you 3 do NOT like to take credit the saying goes without a doubt 'give credit where it is deserved'. You 3 are hero's, to those children in Africa, to your parents and family, and to your fans all across the world. I love you Isaac, Taylor, and Zachary! Thank you for giving us the power to love, care, share, and help out even if that just means walking barefoot for a mile.

Forever and always a fan from the very begining - Lauren Allison.

Taking the walk changed my life more than my logged mile will ever effect an AIDS patient or orphaned child. Instead of simply earning $1 towards a charity, it opened my eyes to the wealth I possess, the poverty of others, and the desperate need to bridge the gap. Simply put, it changed my entire outlook. By walking just one mile, we can open our eyes to the need of others, and also become empowered and impassioned to reach out and make a difference within our spheres of influence! Thanks so much for getting us excited and mobilized to be a great generation and make a real difference in our world!
