March 5, 2008 - Wednesday

I recently got a phone call from an imaginary friend asking me why I chose to film my next hour special for Comedy Central in Austin, Texas. Why Austin? There are plenty of reasons of course. Austin is a beautiful city to visit with fancy hotels, a great nightlife and a rich tradition of appreciating live performers. Heck, Austin even has the Spam museum.

But for me, the real reason I'm filming my next hour special in Austin is because I'm from Austin. I mean, I wasn't born there and sure I didn't grow up there. But my parents… well, my parents aren't from Austin either. My dad almost had a business trip there once though.

So how am I from Austin? Well, my Dad's name was Austin. And I'm his son, so see. I come from Austin. Sure, my Dad's legal name was Michael, but his nickname was Austin. I mean, no one would address my Dad as Austin, 'cause he wouldn't know they were talking to him. The nickname thing was something only I knew about. I, of course, would never call him Austin, cause he was my Dad. I would call him "Dad".

I suppose another reason I chose to tape my new hour special in Austin goes back a long way. It must have been like 30 years ago. I guess I was your age. I remember I was sitting with my Dad in his orange dune buggy... boy he loved that dune buggy... sometimes I thought more than he loved me... anyway, we were sitting there enjoying our popsicles in my Dad's dune buggy and he turns to me and says. "Hey Jim when you grow up, if you end up being a stand up comic would you do me a favor? Will you film your second hour special from Comedy Central in Austin at the Paramount Theater?" I'll never forget that day cause later on he told me his was gay.

You don't believe me? Well why don't ask my Dad? Oh, that's right he's dead. Thanks for bringing it up. (Oh, I can't stay mad at you.)

Anyway, thats why I'm dedicating my Austin filming to you and my gay dead dad.

If you'd like to be notified of the special pre-sale for the shows I'm filming in Austin, either join my email list or this Facebook Event.

I love you and Austin and My Dad,

I'd love to see a Dallas date too. Austin gets sxsw, isn't that enough? Damn Austin...

I'm trying to convince my husband that we need to drive to Austin for the show. So far, no luck, but I'm going to keep trying!

Jim,

I would never mean to intentionally diminish your geographic acumen (I have no idea what I just typed)

The plain fact is that the Spam Museum is in Austin, Minnesota - not Austin, Texas. I've never been there, but I know it's there because I keep telling myself I'll go there someday. it's not too far from the Twin Cities (where I saw you on stage then saw you getting to your spot in the lobby to greet your adoring, also-pale fans)

Who knows? I might even bring my kids. (To the Spam Museum, not to your show. Although I could, they'd love your show. Almost as much as they love Spam.)

You know, Spam is kind of like Minnesota's answer to bacon.
If bacon was a question. If bacon were a question. (Hmm, that both sounds right)

I'm going to stop typing now. Have a good show!

If they made a bacon hot pocket, would they cancel each other out?

I saw you perform in Houston, Texas last year for my birthday. I got to shake your hand, and you called me pale. It was the best birthday of my life. :D

Next time you get closer to all of us Gaffigan fans here in Louisiana (like Houston, or New Orleans--that would be amazing!), I'll be the first in line to get tickets. Thanks for being so awesome.

Your imaginary friend is nosy, and far more opinionated than mine.

I hope you both make it Down Under some time soon - Canberra loves you too !!

I love your imaginary friend's bacon...

Awww, that was a beautiful story! My dad was gay, too. The only reason him and Mom ever hooked up was because Mom LOOKED like a man and didn’t mind taking it “Greek”. I bet your parents were a beautiful, tall blonde couple, though. My mom still gets mistaken for a man. That’s such a great memory with the dune buggy and the Popsicles. I love this happy blog.

What a coincidence! My dad is gay too. Okay...he might not be gay, but he's extremely happy, which I find quite surprising because I KNOW I wouldn't be happy getting porked in the backside.

[Since you have HTML disabled, just imagine a pic with bacon stuffed into a large condom here]

And all this time I thought the REAL reason you were filming your 2nd special in Austin was because Jennifer (Voodoo) and I are thinking about moving there (or Pensacola) after we get married in June.

Good luck with the special and thanks again for voting for us.

Honestly,
Folks from La, Bama, NC, MN and NZ are all welcome; I think you all have flags in the Alamo too. I haven't met a person from any of them places that didn't like runnin in the Heart of Texas.
If you are IMPORTANT or CRITICAL try Houston or Dallas...That's where I store my relatives who can't laugh due to the anal tension. If you are bustin' up laughing the anus relaxes... How ya gonna cut wire if your ass isn't tawt?

PS: My Dad is dead too... I don't know what else he might be doing.

OMG!! I can't believe it ... The same thing happened to me! My dad also told me he was gay ... he didn't tell me.. he showed me ...well actually, I told him I was gay ..then we made out for awhile ...I was so crushed! He said I was a great kisser, but he just didn't feel that same spark that he felt with my brother. That's why I moved to Austin! LOL ... I'm kidding my dad's not gay .. although I think his boyfriend is!

Hehehe .. Love your stuff Man! Can't wait to see your show here in Austin!

YAY!!! Love Austin!! THat's where we spent our honeymoon.....not you and me...me and my husband...but it would have been fun if it was with you....I mean, we'd have had to get another bed in the hotel room for you....and maybe a bit more expensive to feed you...but it still would have been cool....except for the sunset pic we took...deciding on who you'd be standing next too.....
But anyway...YAY Austin! (and your dead gay dad too)
