It's with a sad heart that we are to inform you that Abilene has closed it's doors. We are not quite sure what the future holds for us, but we have to say that all future shows are cancelled.

However, we love all you guys out there who have rallied to support us in the past and we miss you guys as much as you miss us. We miss drunken karaoke, napkins in the air during a fat city show, drunken philosophical conversations at the upstairs bar at closing time, finding random items in the bar after closing, people's funny xrated stories involving the bathrooms, bands starting as shitty openers and turning into awesome headliners, the rabid regulars (who would drag thier friends into the bar to become regulars themselves) who were the lifeblood of the place. They knew that Abilene was more then a hipster's punchline, that it was a place to go see good music and relax with some friends and some (or many, many) beers. If the walls could talk...they would end up being arrested...Good times.

Never count us out, who knows what the future holds. We hope to bring good fucking music back to south street when we can!

In the meantime, have a drink for Abilene!
You know we'd have a drink for you....

Boy, am I late on this one. I've been out of the loop for awhile after the ending of Poorboy...been playing with Hoots & Hellmouth ( www.myspace.com/hootshellmouth ) and was looking forward to dragging them on in. Abilene fucking rocked. We never had a bad show there, ever. Every show was a packed house, sounding good thanks to the excellent soundstaff, booked with great bands thanks to Joey, and we and our fans had killer times thanks to the amazing bartenders. I sincerely hope this is a temporary thing. Philly is full of shitty venues trumpeting shitty cover bands, and South St has turned into an overpriced mall, driving away the unique scene of shops and people that made it famous. Abilene was one of the remaining holdouts...hell, even fucking Zipperhead split, and if that's not a South St icon, I dunno what is. This is a loss, not just for the neighborhood of which I'm a resident, but for the music community of the city itself. Abilene was a place that you could play without getting fucked like most other venues in town (pay attention, grape st!). As much as south st made playing @ abilene a pain in the ass with parking and such, it was bloody worth it every time. Cheers to you all, and I hope to see it back in action soon.
