In the course of last year, I have upset a lot people, found myself
becoming someone I hate, and sacrificed more than I care to lay out in
this BLOG right now...

48 hours ago a SLEW of negative reviews starting hitting the web and print at a rapid pace... my heart fell to the ground - and for a BRIEF moment in time, a question hit me, that I couldn't believe I found myself asking... "what if they're right?"
What if all of the naysayers, and reviewers who were talking about how
BAD REPO is were right, and I was wrong? What if there really wasn't
an audience for this? What if no one really got what we were trying
to do? WHAT IF I MADE THE WORST MOVIE OF THE YEAR... or, as LA TIMES SAID "THE WORST MOVIE OF ALL TIME?!?"

That feeling lasted an entire 12 hours... It lasted until the second
I pulled up in front of the SUNSET 5... only to walk into a MAD HOUSE.

I have been lucky enough to be a part of three SAW films... I have
been to conventions, met with fans, even signed an autograph or two...
But never have I seen the kind of fanship that surrounds REPO. Last
night I watched as show after show sold out at the SUNSET 5. I sat at
Sushi Dan's and WATCHED as they added a midnight show, and within
moments it too SOLD OUT. I walked through a sea of fans DRESSED up
liked REPO characters. I shook hands with fans who drove over ten
hours just to see REPO. I sat back and listened as over a HUNDRED
waiting people broke out in song, singing ZYDRATE ANATOMY...

They stood for HOURS waiting to get in... Singing, dancing, being
weird, wearing strange costumes. Laughing with each other, dancing
with each other...

But that is not the crazy part...

The crazy part is this was only the 7:30 crowd... Once the theater
doors opened, and everyone took their seats... Outside another crowd
was forming... The 10:00pm crowd... And they were even weirder, and
stranger than the 7:30 crowd... They sang louder... and danced
harder... Don't even get me started on the MIDNIGHT CROWD...

Yesterday morning I woke up, depressed, sad, and down because of all
the hate, and negativity surrounding REPO... But today, I feel
rejuvenated and energetic... But more importantly... Proud. Proud to
be a part of REPO. Proud to know that I worked on a film where an
audience will stand for hours in a line, dressed as characters from
the film. Proud to be a part of a movie where high school kids will
travel 3,000 miles OVERSEAS just to see the movie because it's not
opening in their country. Proud to have a group of dedicated fans,
who take to the streets, flyering cars, clubs, and bars all because
they want to promote something they believe in... Proud to be a a
part of a movie where at 2:00am in the morning - fans will gather in a
parking lot SINGING the entire CD. Proud to be a part of something
that is so important - fans will TATTOO themselves with it. Proud
because REPO is already much bigger than 'just a movie'.

Making REPO made me realize why I want to make movies in the first
place. TO ENTERTAIN and ENGAGE audiences, and anyone who was there
last night - watching the crowd run and dance around in the aisles
could see they were entertained and very much engaged. And more
importantly, a film with little promotion, or advertising?

As much as I would love to have reviewers endorse what I am doing - I
would rather have the fans, the public... the ones who buy the tickets
get behind what we are doing.

With basically no advertising, generally bad reviews from main stream
press, I think we did a HELL OF A JOB last night... The last 48 hours
there has been a heap of negativity surrounding REPO. Some of us
where even BLINDED by it... But one only has to drive down to any of
the theaters showing REPO to see that a couple of negative reactions
can not, and will not change what so many have embraced... something
different.

For the critics that hate out there if you could only see the reaction from the people this movie played to... You would realize why I have not, and will not ever give up on
this film...

Some will call this movie a failure - but it's already a success... It was made... And that in and of itself is a victory...

I stand by this movie... The cast... The music... But more importantly I stand by the fans who have embraced it. Those are the critics I care about!

WORST MOVIE OF THE YEAR! I think there are some fans out their would disagree.

Enjoy some pictures from LAST NIGHTS opening from NY and LA!

Well Some people said the same thing about Rocky Horror Picture Show? and it is a movie with a following that has lasted 30 some years. I am honored to be apart of a new fandom that will last just as long.

On BEHALF oF THE FANS, THIS MOVIE and everyone involved in it ROCKS and don't let any stupid critic tell you different.

DAMN STRAIGHT!!!

While not as packed in San Francisco last night as it was in your LA photos above, we still had a great sized crowd at my showing. And there was another good sized crowd waiting for the next showing. And at the "REPO Release Party" afterwards, there was some folks dressed in cool REPO inspired costumes. The club even had blue colored Zygate drinks and a bunch of blue "Zygate-ish" glow sticks. I got very buzzed off the Zygate drink too! Haha!!! I hope to post some pics soon.

Tonight, I'm going to see REPO! for my 2nd time!!! As far as I'm concerned, REPO! lived up to the hype!!!

as far as I can tell you made a movie for a very rare group of people.. of course there is a lot of negativity around it. look outside and see the world.. but who wants to make movies for THEM?
you can be proud of creating such a special work for such special people.

my respect for you grew a lot after finding out about REPO. I think this is much more than the saw films. I hope you..ll give us more of this in the future.

Darren -

I've been waiting to see Repo! since last year when I caught the clip from Spike's Scream Awards floating around the internets. I went to see the show last night at the Lagoon Theater in Minneapolis, and it's the only film I've been to (besides the midnight opening of Episode 3) where people applauded once the credits rolled. I think you and everyone else who worked on the film created something amazing that will far outlast anyone's memory for negative reviews. I loved the movie, my friends loved it, and I'm just greatful that there are filmmakers willing to make unconventional films for the unconventional people out there.

Thank you.

Darren, screw what those critics think. They don't know what a good movie is anyway. They wouldn't know a good movie if one if the film unraveled it self from its reel, SLITHERED up to the critic, pulled their pants down, and constricted there genitals until they popped off. They would literally go "Did you feel something just now?" They are programed to hate things like Repo. Their opinions don't even count.

ANYWAY, glad you had fun at the premieres, i really wish i could have been there. Luckily i had the luxury of seeing Repo at the University of Maryland, and it blew my mind multiple times, enduced multiple orgasms, and im pretty sure im addicted to Zydrate. You keep doing what your doing Darren.

Never listen to the critics (even though I'm one myself). For me criticism is a form of entertainment that should be taken with a grain of salt. I respect you for what you have achieved. I've been struggling for almost ten years trying to break in to the business, making two micro-budget features (5 grand a piece). I'm not giving up, and you're already there man! You're doing something you can love, and it doesn't matter if anyone else likes it. If you believe in it, that's all that really matters. But I know that it's hard to "not" listen to critcs.

We had a blast, the movie was very unique and says Darren Bousman from begining to end. The reviewers also said "Death To Smoochy" sucked and "Zoolander".....shows how much they know. I am not a fan of musicals but found myself singing this movie all night long....cant wait to see the next creation.

My friend and I literally raced down the freeway from San Diego to West Hollywood to get a good spot in line for the 10pm showing since my friend called saying the 7:30 line was crazy. Ugh!

Darren don't listen to those idiots. If I read a review for everything I purchased I wouldn't have anything! I think people who are paid to be professional movie critics are kind of stupid. Its just a person with an opinion, thats all they really are. Opinions are truly like buttholes because everyone has one. I am glad that you realized the impact of your movie, I for one cant wait to see it (I am so sick with a cold right now). You spoke to a generation of people that follow (in my opinion) some of the best cult films and tv that has touched so many people and affected so many people. Repo is like buffy, charmed, dead like me, nightmare before xmas, rocky horror (even though its not my fav), critics may not have liked all those mentioned but the fanbase is really what kept it going. So I am glad you realized so many people will be enjoying it again and again, and how much its already affected people. And we do disagree because we love it and those photos are CRRRAZZZY.

And that Darren buddy is the only reason you need to be proud of your film. There was an Uwe Boll and Paul W.S. Anderson film out this year, and they think REPO is the worst? These critics really need to reconsider their opinions...and its funny because most of them seem to have the same one....

HERE, HERE!

Repo is the only movie I've ever seen that had the audience applauding after it was over.

It's the only thing I've ever felt an obligation to get behind as a fan and help to make it something greater.

It's the only film I've seen that has such a refreshing throwback to Opera. Real opera. The stuff that I grew up listening to through my dad, like The Magic Flute and Die Fledermaus. I love that style of storytelling, and seeing Repo was something special for me.

This is also the first time I've seen a movie where everyone involved in it has so much love for it. Not just you, and Terrance and Darren (the other one), and the cast, but all of the fans.

You've done something wonderful here. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Last night was honest proof that REPO has gained a very very very large following, and you have MILLIONS of people supporting the film, and more importantly, supporting YOU :) 99% of critics don't have enough of an open mind to appreciate true art - such as REPO.

So get out there, celebrate, and continue life knowing that you have made one HELL of a musical! The journey is only begining, my friend ;)

Darren man, I am ever so anxious to see this masterpeice, being in Canada, having no money to travel so far, I am only hoping to God this gem gets noticed, I LOVE the soundtrack. Yes I downloaded it but I shall buy it when I can! Now its movies like these that really matter, movies that the media will shun just because they are scared of a predicted outcome that they think will crash. For example, look at "The Boondock Saints." That movie was underground and is one of the biggest movies ever. Getting back to REPO.. I believe even if it dosent make a worldwide release in theaters it can still make its way to a straight to dvd release. Better that way I think, its the underground movies that show true heart and soul with movie making. I have so much belief in this movie and I havent even seen it, the clips and soundtrack just grip you by the balls. Like to me I thought it was the most bizarre thing Ive ever seen for a movie but thats what drew me to it. Such kickass music and the storyline is just fucking awsome. I just hope "Lions Gate" will dig the dildos out of their asses and see what this movie is doing. Gaining such a reputation and gripping such a wide fanbase just like you said, not having any commercial advertising, now thats something to consider as to releasing this movie. But again Darren I hope it makes a release, I want to see it! haha. And the funny part about how I got into it was from my 13 year old brother, hes a huge fan of yours and he too, wants to see REPO desperatly. Thats all the kid talks about, and he promotes it alot at his school, he already has alot of his friends wanting to see it, even his friends parents haha. So if it does get that release we won't miss it! Mad love!

Darren, because you wrote this amazing blog, I'm coming to see the film again tonight with two newbies.

WE are the audience for your film. We are people who search out independent/foreign music on the internet because the radio sucks, revel in offense comedy because it makes people think, and are able to appreciate Verdi's AIDA as well as the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

This blog is the most inspiring thing I've read in a while. Thank you.

To me, it is quite evident that the mainstream critics must not have watched the movie, because if they did then they would realize how wrong they are about it. Today is the 2nd day, and my boyfriend and I have already seen it 3 times. We're going to see it again soon with a big group of people as well :) Hell, we'll even buy tickets even if we don't actually show up! ...Just kidding, we'll most definitely show up. The one thing that makes me mad is the thought that I could have auditioned for this movie and my mom told me after she already said no because "I had to sing opera!" Grrrrr..... Well, anyway, the movie is really great... scratch that, this EVENT was really great. It was very well cast, and the score is amazingly addicting...like Zydrate. :) Keep up the good work, and I'll definitely spread the word to everyone I know! Jacki
