Keith Olbermann discusses PROP 8:

(thank you Keith).

PERSONAL NOTE:

What are we if not equal?
Who are we if we do not fight for what's right?
When, if not now?

Fear-mongers will tell you that your children are in danger. They will tell you that we are hell sent to infect them with a lewd and degenerate disease. They will tell you that there is no God in our hearts. They will tell you that there is no love in our soul. They will tell you that the innocence of our society depends on keeping us down.

They will tell you anything to scare you into hating us.

In 1924, The Racial Integrity Act felonized marriage between whites and non-whites. It wasn't until 1967 (43 years later) that caucasians and others could legally marry. What a waste of time, yes? Indeed, it seems absurd now. But here we are again. The same bigotry of love has risen its ugly head and aimed its narrow eyes at Same-Sex couples.

If two consenting adults are able to find love in this violent and violating world of chaos and placidity, who are they to deny those couples the right to celebrate love in a legal and binding ceremony? Why should the government have that interfering power? Don't they interfere in our lives enough already?

Besides, isn't the point of the Conservative morality thesis to get us closer to positive values? Isn't marriage supposed ensure monogamy thus minimizing the debauchery they claim to fear? Wouldn't it be more logical to allow everyone to stand before God and take vows of love?

Or is this opposition just another veiled form of hate?

If you're like me, you will refuse to accept this ugliness anymore. We can make a difference. We can PROTEST. WE CAN STAND UP, SPEAK OUT, & STRIKE BACK.

Don't let the bigots and fear-mongers control our nation one moment longer. You can find resources online - to write the media, to join the protests, to fight to keep America the land of the Free.

Say NO to HATE.
Say NO to PROP 8.

Best,
Otep Shamaya

I couldn't agree with you more, dear Otep. This is a very personal issue to me. My brother is bisexual. If he wants to marry a woman, he can... but if he wants to marry a man, he can't? Where is the difference between those two things? He is my hero. He is the sweetest, most loving, gentle and generous soul I have ever known. Yet many people would have me believe that the devil is in him, that he is evil incarnate. He would never hurt anybody, yet those who are against his rights would happily murder a gay person for the simple reason that they are attracted to the same gender... yet he is the evil one?

But I do have hope that we are coming to a time when more and more people are starting to understand. My generation is so much more accepting of gay people than my parents' generation. I really do think that we will reach a time when people see gay marriage as just the same as people now see mixed race marriage: not even worth commenting on.

Thank you... I started crying when I watched this and read your personal note. Last year I came out to my parents and my friends and within these people, they have mostly been accepting, but I hear about the persecution outside of my personal world and it sickens me. I never understood how human beings could treat other human beings like that. to say I'm am going to hell because I love another female; that's absurd, but if that may be then I choose love. I am blessed to have those on my side in a world so against gays. I will stand up, speak out, and strike back because this has gone on long enough. Every person deserves to be with the one they love and be happy. I want to be able to be married one day to who I love no matter if that be male or female. Love knows no outer appearance, only what resides in the heart. As one of my very good and christian friend told me once, "I believe in the word of god and doesn't he say we are supposed to treat others as we want to be treated? That's why I'm doiing this with you." She was speaking of a group of friends and I making t-shirts to wear at our school on the day of silence.

The same thing was happening in Connecticut...
there was a [small scale] rally to stop the amendment passing Same-sex Marriage from being legalized
Fortunately, it didn't pan out as expected.

Point being, Prop 8 is a set back, but there are always set backs & bounds forward on the road to progression.

We will hit a nation-wide revolution. We will.

We live in a world where people can go off and die for a war they really had nothing to do with. Or face biggotry for what they believe in.

If two people love one another it shouldn't matter if its two men two women a man and a woman or whatever. Love is blind in all eye's, we look beyond sex and race and find that person we can truely connect with. One day everyone will finally see this and realize that they've known this all along.

I completely agree.

The most BS part about gay marriage being illegal is they base it on mistranslated words of the Christian Bible. One, the correct translation is 'boy' instead of 'another man', thus pedophilia is against God's word.
Two, aren't church and state supposed to be separate? How can you base a law on religious ideals, false religious ideals at that?

I've been against the ban since it happened, so thank you Miss Otep for putting it out there.

thus prop 8 is friggen insane. i mean though i am straight i have always supported gay rights and this seems like more prejudice and hatred to me. unless suddenly gays are not u.s. citizens then they are entitled to the same exact rights as straight people. i cant believe cali of all places passed this proposition. keep up the good work and lets see if we cant get this through the thick headed politicians heads that all people are equal and deserve the same rights regardless of race religion or sexual orientation.

It is dumb that people are fighting something they already voted for. Not to long ago too. This is why I think that only the educated should have voted this year and every year, not the people who were bussed in to vote 2 weeks before the election.

If you voted this year Straight DEM/REP, and or just only voted for the president it is your fault this prop is already passed , it is your fault we are now fighting for the change Next time you vote read up on your politics not just your president!!!!!!!!

Ironic how people want the government all in their lives when it's in the matters of something they want. Yet when the government infringes on you by doing something that matters to another the government is all in your way.

Essentially from a founding and law point of view Prop. 8 is un-American. Morality has nothing to do with religion. To propose a law due to religious morality is in violation of the division of church and state. We as American's have the right to the pursuit of happiness. Prop. 8 clearly violates that and our civil liberty. To deny some one their way of life with in reason is against everything that is America.

To play devil's advocate I understand the other side of the coin as far as taxes. Despite that thought a couple willing to raise children in any shape or form should be given those same rights, for it is their civil liberty. Prop. 8 isn't hate it is ignorance. It is America sliding from the literal translation of it's core foundation. Love is blind. Justice is blind, thus law is blind. These things see no color, creed, or way of life.

The problem with America is the ignorant people. The general population of this country grows up not knowing what their own country is about. Those same people want the government to take care of their every aspect of their life cradle to grave. If the un-educated could be educated in what is American and what is not. Educated from the history and core. Not the politics of a party.

In closing I support your views and gay people in America's views of same sex marriage. There is no reason why a single person can be denied the joy of their civil liberties. Yet it blows my mind how people want the government in their every aspect of their life like spoiled children. Yet when the government infringes on their life after being welcomed in with open arms they get upset.

I hope Prop. 8 and it's ideals fade in the sands of time. It is very un-American.

It absolutely kills me inside that people put so much time and effort into breaking up couples in love. People make laws, propositions, and constitutional amendments to deny basic rights to couples in love. A guy and a girl can meet in Vegas and get legally married after knowing each other for 20 minutes and still have all the rights of a married couple, yet a gay couple who has known and loved each other for years and wants to be together forever can't. If you really think gay couples are so evil and horrible, don't marry someone of the same sex. Don't be friends with gay people. Don't look in their bedroom windows when they fuck. But no one has the right to take away someone's rights because of their damn opinion. If I were to marry a girl, how would that effect some homophobic person 1,000 miles away from me??? How would my decision to marry a female effect them??? It wouldn't, yet they're so hell bent on taking away the rights of gay couples. They just need to throw more hate in the world and take away the love.

Wouldn't God view those who hate as sinners, as opposed to those who love?? One would think so.......

Hate is a horrifying thing. But unfortunately it is something that is bred into people from a young age. I think there should be laws against parents teaching their children to hate just because someone or something is different!! It's neglectful!! My poor father had to change his wedding to a handfasting just because he is gay ... and now we are all crushed! I am going to find things I can do online now to start protesting this!!

as a lesbian myself and in a long distance relationship i find that prop 8 sucks for one alot of people think gay marrage is wrong because of religion well god greatest gift is love .our orignal sin is sex for straight or gays and that sin is takin away from us because are souls ascend to heaven our flesh stays with are bodies rotting in the ground. and people would have no problems with gay people if the sex wasnt included and it was just love. there is like 360 odd things in the bible about what straight people arnt allowed to do only 6 for gays its not that god loves us more its because hetrosexuals need more supervision. he he .anyway i think there needs to be a nation wide rally in dc for pridefest maybe that will open washingtons eyes a bunch of us together but i mean peacefull group no violence or threatful or hurtful taunts otherwise we are no better then them who are hurting us.
we need to band together to show that we are serious they let britney spears ruin marriage let the gays bring it back to what it was

That video made me so happy. It's great to see somebody taking such a big risk for what they believe in.

People seem to think it's strange how passionate I am about GLBTQ rights since I'm straight, but it's all about compassion for other people. When I found out that Prop. 8 passed I just started crying. I had no idea that I would be affected like that and if I told most people they'd ask me why, since the amendment doesn't directly effect me. My answer is because I have compassion for other people instead of only worrying about myself. I wish that people could take some time to just think how they would feel if it was their right to marriage being taken away, how outraged and violated they would feel. Then they need to understand that that's what the people affected by Prop. 8 are feeling right now.

I don't know who said it originally, but really, 'when injustice becomes law, rebellion becomes duty'. Everyone needs to fight Prop. 8 and not just say "That's sucks, oh well." now that it's passed. The vote was so so close and we can't give up now and hope it'll change in 40 years.

Otep, Even though I'm "NOT like you," :) I refuse to accept the hatred and bigotry.

Nobody has the right to dictate who anyone may love.

I have become of the "ALL OR NONE" philosophy.

Either ALL people have the right to marry, or NOBODY has the right to marry.

I've been SO annoyed when someone wants to argue against gay marriage but the only thing they can say against it, OTHER than just the sounds bytes they keep hearing... is "gay people shouldn't marry because they can't procreate.
"

So when I ask "Well, what if a man and woman are married but they're sterile... or CHOOSE not to have children.
Is that wrong too?

The answers? "That's not what I'm talking about"

DUH! THAT'S EXACTLY what you're talking about.

(I don't want kids. I'm happy shacking with my boyfriend. I'm not his property. He's not my property, either. Our "kids" are snakes. I guess that's wrong too.
:P

OH, and the STUPIDEST thing ever said (and so many of them keep repeating it... SUCH MORONS!) "If we let men marry men and women marry women, who's to stop People from marrying animals?" (SHUT UP DUMBASS!) "OR stop a couple from marrying another couple?" (I don't see a problem with that).

BTW, One of my other friends has a different point of view, that I think is wonderful!

Here is the link to his blog (I hope it works!)

http://blog. myspace. com/index. cfm?fuseaction=blog. view&friendID=59994949&blogID=448100661&Mytoken=F2F64A5C-4ACA-455B-B13C9FF1B0F2E81896730418

An excerpt of his blog:
"How can the Christian Churches demand that not only do they not wish to marry gay people, but Buddhists can't marry gays either? Why does Christianity have this monopoly? The funny part is that there are many Christian Churches who have no problem marrying gay people. After all, that's more tax free money in the collection plate.
So the question becomes, why do some Christians have the monopoly on marriage? Is that right? Is that moral? Is that American? Is that freedom?"

He has many more points you might enjoy reading!

It amazes me that church and state are to be seperate yet the only reason our government can give for being against gay marriage is that it goes against laws set forth by God in the Bible. The same conservatives that are fighting gay marriage urge women to not have abortions. Hmmm...if the fetus is worth saving doesn't that mean you should love and accept it for what it becomes in life.
I am not homosexual yet I don't ever remember choosing to be straight, so why is it that we assume that homosexuls some how made a choice?

At almost all wedding there the verse from Corinthans 1 that goes something like love is not jealous, love is not blind, love does not judge...well you all know what I'm talking about. Practice what you preach people...only God can judge and he doesn't make mistakes.
Let all people love and be loved!
