Category: Travel and Places

After the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru (see blog) we headed through Lake Titicaca to Bolivia.

The good stuff:  This is an amazing country with the most geo-diversity of all my travels so far.  The prices are the cheapest and it is easy to get by on $15 to $20 a day including transportation and excursions.

The NOT so good stuff:  Some of the roads are very dangerous and most are unpaved.  On our journey from La Paz to Rurrenabaque the bus in front of us went over the side of the road and 20 people died (see List of Bad Travels blog for more).  Of course this road is considered the "World's Most Dangerous Road" (see pics below) and there were heavy rains the night before.  We decided to fly back to La Paz.

Where to go:  We started at Lake Titicaca where we stayed in Copacabana and then went to La Paz where we caught the a bus to Rurrenabaque and took a 3 day jungle tour through Pampas.  This is an incredible trip –with pink dolphins, monkeys, alligators, piranhas, turtles, colorful birds, and amazing sunsets.  Then we went to Salar de Uyuni which is the world's largest and highest slat flat.  We did a 4 day trip that included Laguna Colorado filled with flamingos and flaming red algae colored water with shores crusted with arctic white gypsum salt.  Then we saw Laguna Verde which is a bright turquoise green due to the arsenic and other minerals.  Then we cruised across huge expanses of desert with amazing views.  From here we made our way to the "mines" of Potosi where we did a tour of the mines and blew some stuff up with dynamite from the local roadside stand (seriously).  Then we made our way to Santa Cruz where we were too tired to do much anything and just caught a train to Brazil (see Rio blog).

So, how were the mines? I wish I had the time to have taken that tour from Chile.

How long are you going to be in Brazil? I might move there in a few weeks. I'm not going to Nigeria now. There is way too much violence there right now. I added some more pics from Chile in my blog if you want to check them out.

Tace care and safe travels bro, Brian

amazing pictures, you must have quite the camera to capture those images.

Where you able to spend much time with the locals? You spend very little time talking about the people and who you meet there, and the culture, compared to your usual commentary.

May your time in Brazil be safe, and glad to here you escaped the road.

amazing...I just got back from driving through Africa...the roads were a shambles, I wonder how they'd rank against that Bolivian Nightmare....glad you're safe...and that you had a 4X4. A few of us are planning a road trip in South America next year and your blogs are inspiring...keep filling us in and careful of transvestites in RIO.

I love your way of commenting on these different places. Let me ask you would you say traveling in groups is prefered in an area like this or can a woman go on her own? I want to go, this is amazing. I always saw pictures here and there in magazines but I NEVER imagined that someone can get to really experience the beauty you see in your pictures. I absolutely love the monkeys!!! Are they harmless and accostomed to humans?

Pardon my ignorance but, I just cant believe it! Your profile has really opened my mind more than I thought I could posibbly have.

Thank You so much for the posting pictures of your trips its great!!!!

So envious at the moment. This is absolutly an unforgettable trip. I like the short commentary you gave on Bolivia. I am in awe of this beautiful country and the equally as beautiful pictures that were taken. What camera do you use? Or do you polish these with a photoshop program to get such clarity?

Can't wait to see where you go off next. Buena suerte con tu proximo viaje.

Hi Duane,

I got of my behind and went and had my very own adventure, I left on Feb 20th and got back the 7th of March. I know about time, right? I will say that you did inspire me to get up, just go do it and not wait any more. Puerto Rico it was very wonderful, not everything I expected but incredible in ways I didn't expect at all..The people were awesome if I want to do something, anything, snorkeling, whale watching, or horseback in the jungle, I was hooked up in a heartbeat just by talking to a few locals. They were friendly and very helpful. Planning my next trip to Belize now, can't wait. Got any tips? Loved the new pics!

Smiles and Laughter,Laura

I don't usually comment on your blogs an' stuff, because I have too much to say to type it all out, and not much of it is original -- but this time I just have to.  I have a few comments/questions.

7th picture down, 2nd one of the monkey-type things: Is it just me, or is one of the monkeys (or whatever they are) totally humping the one that's eating out of someone's hand??  You have no idea how hard I laughed when I noticed that.  I was mid-"awww!" when I saw it, and about choked.  LOL  If I'm wrong, and am simply a pervert with an overactive imagination, then, um... just kidding!  I didn't think the monkey was gettin' it on.

8th picture down: what ARE those things??  You have the picture saved as "pampas"... but I don't know what that is.

11th picture/crocodile/alligator: OMGOSH, this picture scared me out of my wits!  I have this irrational fear of water-dwelling animals (meaning that yes, I am terrified of the ocean -- which is really, really sad, because I think it's the most beautiful, incredible thing ever!) and seeing that thing slither up to me in the water would literally have me crapping my pants in fear.  But it is a truly awesome picture!  (As all of them are!)

Yeah, basically the rest of my comments could be summed up in what everyone else has already said: WOW!  Gorgeous.  Incredible.  Absolutely breath-taking, etc.

P.S. I believe at one point in the past you had a picture of you/someone in a hammock on the beach in Aruba...  Do you still have that picture lying around somewhere?  And if so, would you mind if I borrowed it for something?  Even if you'd rather I not use it (I was hoping you'd let me use it to make "friends-only" banner for my friend to use on his blog), if it's easy for you to access, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me see it one more time.  You thoroughly rock, kid.  Keep up the excellence.  : D
