MAY 2008 REVIEWS
AMERICA'S SWEETHEART - Rainbow Party: Blending a fusion of both Indie and Rock sounds this four-piece you couldn't want a more well played album but it's all a little predictable and one wonders why they chose not to just let go and speed things up much more. They're supposed to sound like Blondie, Go Gos, B52s, Fastbacks and The Muffs but I don't see that at all. What they sound like is a 90's Riot Grrl band which isn't a bad thing but I know America's Sweetheart have the potential to put out a much better release. There's some good tracks on here such as 'Want Your Smile', 'Cute But Dumb', and 'Cool Girl', 'Sally Says So' and then they blow it with tracks like 'Chaudie' and 'The Ego'. If this album was as adventorous as the sleeve then they'd have a killer album on their hands. Instead they have an album that is going to be really enjoyed in parts and hated in others. Still worth picking up as six of the tracks are well worthy of being heard. 6.5/10

ATOMIC BITCH - Promnite: Hey! Hey! Hey! One of my favourite bands 'Atomic Bitch' are back with a new album and I love it! There's nine tracks and I can safely say that I love them all. Despite Atomic Bitch being a two piece they've managed to create a great sound for themselves that see's Brad and Ursula blending elements of Punk, New Waves and Indie to give them that unique sound. Aside from the well played music see's the hot Ursula Tadlock delivering the vocals with style and what's more how you'd expect from an experienced front person. Opening up with 'Suspicious Hair Dryer' you're drawn in immediately and you can't help fall for tunes like 'What A Lifetime', 'Easy That Tiger', 'Promo Nite' and 'Rock N' Roll Highschool'. Apart from a great album musically you also get a well packaged album cover and the CD itself is like a vinyl record. Top stuff from Ursula and Brad here. 8.5/10

AZRIEL - A Will Of Fire: Azriel are a new band to me but their catchy Metallic HC sound really did it for me and I'll go as far to say as I'm amazed I don't see these guys on the likes of Scuzz, Kerrang and Rockworld TV. Forget other bands in this genre of music as Azriel have it spot on with some top notch musicianship and equally outstanding vocal delivery from David Murray. For a debut album these guys have been captured so well and I'm hard pressed to think of many bands who've put something of equal high quality out there in recent years. Not only is the musicianship tight but the quality of the production is second to none. If you don't believe me when I say this is a great album then check this baby out for yourselves. I love it and you will too! Anyone who knows what a great HC band is will know these rock and will play this beast to death! 9.5/10

DEMENTED ARE GO - Live And Rockin': The band were never happy with this recording and Link Records who originally released this live album would release anything which would make them a quick buck. While this somewhat does capture a Demented Are Go live show I have to agree the quality really isn't up to much and who the hell was allowed to play the fiddle throughout the show?!! I guess this is one for collecters of DAG material and what you get for your money includes some of their better known songs such as 'Surf Ride To Oblivion', 'Pervy In The Park', 'Cripple In The Woods' and 'Anal Wonderland'. There's fourteen tracks in all and this comes with excellent sleeve notes written by Simon Nott of Big Cheese Magazine. If you're a collector of DAG material this isn't a bad release production wise - It just should have been better. 7/10

DIRTY REVOLUTION - It's Gonna Get Dirty EP: I've been waiting for this baby to come through the door and was it worth the wait? Oh yes! The production could have been better but as a debut release from this band they've done well. Dirty Revolution are Cardiff based band who blend the finer elements of Ska and Reggae the some wicked socially aware lyrics. Opening up this EP is 'Dirty Revolution' a Reggae number in the vein of King Blues/Suicide Bid and for me the strongest track on this release. Next up is a catchy Ska number ' I Love Reggae' which is a bit if a fun number on how a Ska fan meets a Skinhead onloy to find he's into Skrewdriver. I've heard a live version of this song too and it fits so well into what the band are doing. The third track 'Failure To Communicate' speak for themselves. A great song with lots of Reggae thrown in along with the Ska beat. '50p' which is a bit of a dig at celebrities and the vocalist not feeling the need to have to get her tits out to prove herself. Another catchy song that probably goes down well live. The closing number on this EP is 'Police'. Let's face it the way society is and nutters stabbing people etc on street corners it's not too hard to have a dig at the old bill and quite rightfully so . Very heavily Reggae influenced and not to far removed from Suicide Bid. This is a great CD and if given a better production would see the band being captured much better. Not a bad effort and a great introduction to this Welsh four-piece. 8/10

DREAM ARIA - In The Wake: I guess the band will hate me for saying this but they're one of the best Goth bands doing the rounds today. They have a sound that most of these modern goth bands can only dream of and having a inspring vocalist like Ann Burstyn fronting the band I can't believe these aren't signed by a large independent. This album maybe three years old but I tell you what it's got all the ingredients of a great album and even the sampling they use doesn't spoil the finish product. There's thirteen tracks in all and I have to say not one filler either. For me my favourite tracks include 'Sungoddess', 'In The Wake - Body', 'Blue Lady', 'Promise' and 'Opus Dei'. The music by be keyboard based but everyone plays there part and no more than Jozef Pilasanovic on guitars who's guitar lines really add to this baby. Don Stagg has had some excellent ideas with the music and without over doing any of the parts either. This also comes well produced. Dream Aria are certainly worth checking out. 9/10

DREWVIS - For The Win: This is going to be one of those albums you're going to love or hate. I can't see Ska purists geting into this at all though I'm sure it'll go down a blinder with the younger crowd. Myself I'm in two minds about. Some days I think this is dreadful but on others when I'm looking for a bit of tranquility I can get into. Acoustic Ska was put firmly on the map by Chris Murray and in student circles I think Drewvis will get there eventually. His music has a very rootsy Ska/Reggae feel to it and on this mini album you get seven songs played in this vein along to very personal lyrics. I wish I could write more but as you can guess I'm still undecided whether or not I really like this release. Maybe I need a few more plays? Still worth checking out and deciding for yourself. Comes well produced and well packaged. 6.5/10

FORMER CELL MATES - Who's Dead And What's To Pay?: Former Cell Mates have that Leatherface guitar sound but that isn't suprising as main songwriter 'David Lee Burdon' played with Leatherface. There's certainly a more rockier edge to this band but you can hear Leatherface for sure but for me it's not a bad thing as I enjoyed then. There's eleven tracks in all on this release and I can't find one filler. Every song has that strong melodic guitar sound that will put these guys on the map. Just listen to some of the songs including 'Always', 'Come January', 'Child Proof Cap', 'Why Would You Pray For Me?' and 'Does He Make You Laugh?' and then try telling I'm wrong. I'd laugh in your face. It's just a shame that so many bands aren't as adventurous as these guys as this is solid guitar music at it's best. 9/10

GIANTS FALL - Promo: These guys contain ex members of Breakneck who shared stages with the likes of Gallows and other prominent HC bands. Having started a new band has seen these guys come back with a fresher sound whcih contains plenty of Rock, Punk and Screamo. There's certainly no room for slackers as these guys are on top form musically. It's just a shame there's only three tracks on this promo as after hearing them I was left wanting more! If you're after a good solid guitar sound which rocks with the best of UK Metal/Punk bands then check out Giants Fall. 9/10

THE GO-SHEILAS - Greatest Hits Vol. 1: It's about time this Orange County Pop-Punk got an album out and I can tell you what it was certainly well worth the wait. From the opening track 'Better Life' you know you've made the right decision to purchase the album as every tune on here is a great Pop-Punk experience. My only grumble would be the closing track '99 Red Balloons' which is done very well but it seems every female fronted band covers this song - It's getting too predictable now! Andy Fisher and Dave Robinson sound like they're having the time of their lives on their guitars. Not only that there's also Tobie Hutton playing some great bass lines with Dan Carlton keeping them in time with some excellent drum work. Sheila Go-Sheila really gives it some on vocals with a great sounding voice with plenty of balls to go with it unlike many female vocalists who prefer just to look pretty. As I said there's some great songs on here which include 'Simple Plan', 'The Lonely Road', 'Holiday' and 'My Life On TV'. You can't go wrong here if Pop-Punk is your thing and what's more you get a great production and a well packaged sleeve. Yep a winner here! 9.5/10

GUANA BATZ - Electra Glide in Blue: I haven't heard this album in years as I hardly ever play vinyl and you know it still sounds as good as it did when first released in 1990. I love the Guana Batz as they're my favourite psychobilly band and when you hear this baby you'll hopefully understand why I love them all these years. There's all the tracks from the original release plus a bonus track 'Lights Out' which is a B-side from an ultra-rare 12 EP which was released through World Service. Everything you could possibly ask of a great psychobilly album can be found on this release. The quality of musicianship is spot on and the production is the best the Btaz ever had. Just listen to the title track 'Electra Glide In Blue', 'Texas Eyes', 'Katherine' and 'Self Made Prison' and you'll be blown away. Not only do tyou get a wicked album but the packaging is spot on with some indepth notes from Craig Brackenridge. This has to be a must for all fans of Psychobilly - It really does! 9.5/10

HANOI ROCKS - The Nottingham Tapes DVD: I was never a big fan of Hanoi Rocks but I pretty much enjoyed this DVD despite the quality both visually and audio not being quite up to standard that I expect. I guess for the die hard fans of Hanoi Rocks this has to be a must as there's not many Hanoi Rocks live recordings in the UK despite them re-locating to London at one point of their career. For those who don't know who Hanoi Rocks are where have you been hiding? They had a Glam Rock N Roll sound and influences ranging anything from the New York Dolls to Iggy Pop to Chuck Berry and Little Richard. There's fourteen live songs on this DVD including 'Blitzkrieg Bop' by the Ramones and other tracks include 'Up Around The Bend', 'Boulevard Of Broken Dreams', 'Tragedy' and 'I Feel Alright'. I guess a must for all Hanoi Rocks fans and Rock N Roll fans in general. 7/10

IDA MARIA - Queen Of The World: Does this woman ever rest? I can't believe the amount of singles that I've had from Ida Maria over the past few months and 'Queen Of The World' is the latest release. While I wasn't too keen on Ida's sound at the beginning this woman and her band have grown on me and each release has seen the sound mature. 'Queen Of The World' is a quality number and despite being a song about drinking this has got to be one of the best songs Ida Maria has ever written. While so many people are trying to compare Ida to the likes of Janis Joplin I think those comparisons are mental! Ida Maria is much better and is her own person – This single confirms it for me. If you're after a great Indie sound with plenty of passion then check out Ida Maria. She rocks! 9/10

JOHNNY FOREIGNER - Waited Up 'Til It Was Late: It's about time this Birmingham based hard edged indie band got an album out but has it been worth the wait. Well of course! This thirteen track album is actually better than I thought it would be and I'm sure this is sure to raise the bands profile and put them on a new level. I like the sound the band have created for themselves and to break things up in the vocal department they have a male and female vocalist which adds to the charm. The frantic pace this album goes at is well wicked and from the very moment you hear the first guitar riff there's no time to have a breather. I can safely say these are one of the best indie bands to come out the UK in a long time and when you hear songs like 'Eyes Wide Terrified', 'Yes! You Talk Too Fast' and 'Our Bipolar Friends' you'll begin to understand why I love this band so much! 9/10

JILL BARBER - For All Time: This album finally gets a UK despite this album being available elsewhere! Still this award winning Canadian artist will no doubt impress with her Indie/Folk sound. There's eleven tracks in all and I can't find anything negative to say abouyt what has been out down on this release/ For me the tracks that inspired me the most were 'Don't Go East', 'Hard Line', 'Legacy' and 'Good Night Sweetheart'. The music that Jill barber plays is inspiration and it's great to hear that she is more than just a vocalist.Just listening to the music you will soon pick up on the passion and this album shows clearly what music is all about! 8/10

JOHNNY FOREIGNER - Eyes Wide Terrified: This is the second single to be taken from the debut album 'Waited Up 'Til It Was Late' and if you've not heard anything by Johnny Foreigner before then this three track single is a great intro to the band. The title track 'Eyes Wide Terrified' is one of the best tracks to come off the album and it's great to see a couple of unreleased tracks added to the single. This is worth picking up just for the third track 'What Burlesque Wont Stand' let alone the two other trackss!8.5/10

JOHNNY PANIC - The Rebel: Johnny Panic are one of the best bands doing the rounds in the UK at present and I'm surprised they aren't much bigger than what they are. If you've never heard this Rock N Roll band then this single is a good place to start. From the moment you hear the title track 'The Rebel' you'll be addicted and I'm not surprised as this is one of the best songs taken from their album 'The Good Fight'. Track two 'The Hurt' is a slow but catchy number which shows Johnny Panic aren't restricted to playing fast Rock N Roll numbers not forgetting the vocal diversity from front man 'Rob Solly'. I can't rave on enough about this band and I'm sure once you guys check them out then you'll hopefully understand why I'm a huge fan of the band. 8.5/10

THE JOHNSON FAMILY - No Forwarding Adress: Despite this band going for over ten years and containing members such as Nigel Lewis (The Meteors), Helen Shadow (The Queen Bees) and Ricky Lee Brawn from the Space cadets I'd never heard of them? So what they like? If you're expecting some Psychobilly then think again. They kinda sound somewhere between Johnny Cash and Wood Guthrie with a touch of Southern style Rockabilly thrown in there. It took me a couple of plays to get in to but once you pick up on what the Johnson Family are trying to achieve it all comes together. I guess I wanted another Psychobilly album but recording shows Nigel Lewis and co in a different light. Gone are the high tech studios too! The Johnson Family recorded this fourteen track album on Ricky's vintage valve recording gear. Yeah I'm so into it now and once you get over the fact you aren't going to get another Psychobilly album you'll enjoy this too. It's quality throughout and what's also good to see is the packaging is far from predictable too. 7/10

KICK BOX RIOT - Seeing Ghosts: It took me a little while to get into this Welsh Indie/Rock band but my partner reckon they're the nuts so who am I to argue? They play some catchy guitar riffs and it's said the vocal delivery is very similar to Hot Water Musics vocals and I'd tend to agree with that. There's six tracks on this release and it's fair to say there's not one filler on here though tracks that stood out for me were 'Fear Of Change' and the title track 'Seeing Ghosts'. I'm actually surprised no ones signed these guys yet as I'm sure there their sound will appeal to a lot of young kids who are getting into this style of music. Great band name and the music isn't bad either! 7.5/10

KIDNAPPER BELL - Less Me, More Sky: Hmmm! I can see what they're trying to do but it's not my thing really and probably not most peoples either. I can't see who're theey're aiming their sound at as there's just too many influences that have been thrown into the mix. Also there's no point to all the samples they have in their music and that's what turned me off this EP on most part.. Kidnapper Bell should be looking at a more potent sound and a sound that doesn't have too many ingredients thrown in to the mix. There's four tracks in all and if you're a litle more adventorous than me then you'll probably like it. 5/10

LONGWAVE - Songs From The Forthcoming Album: I didn't like this promo at first as I found the vocalist annoying but after leaving it for a while and then going back I find it a quite bouncy affair. OK so the vocalist still annoys me but I like the catchy guitar sound these guys have created, I can see many indie fans catching on to this band as they're pretty much an upbeat band and it's a shame as I didn't get the full album as these four songs might be the only decent songs on it! Still it'd be worth picking up the album just for 'No I Don't Dare' on it's own. Producer 'John Leckie' has gotten the best out of Longwave despite those dodgy vocals. 8/10

MIDIAN - Promo: Midian Mathers is a Soul/RnB artist from Virginia in the USA and on the basis of these three songs I have in my hand I'm sure this lady has a very bright future. The opening number 'Don't Wait' is a tasty Soul number with Pop influences which captures Midian's voice at her best. Her voice is just phenomenal on this song and I'm surprised that she is without a label. This three minute song is sure to be a winner when it's released. Next up is 'Breath' which see's Midian take a more RnB route and with the pop influences thrown in this could be a dance hit in any nightclub around the world. Breath is very catchy and confirms what a great vocalist Midian is. Anyone who can make their voice work on different styles of music surely has to be praised. You can't help but wonder why this lady isn't much bigger. An artist that really deserves to go far in this industry so make sure you check her out! 9/10

MY AWESOME COMPILATION - Frontiers: Even though this band are a new name to me I was blown away by the quality of this album and I recommend that everyone gives this Leicester Rock band a listen! From the opening moments of 'Frontiers' I was addicted and with tracks such as 'Red Is For Danger', 'Ghosts On The Underground', 'Hostage', 'Accelerate' and 'Back In The Game' it becomes obvious what a great album this is. These guys have toured with the likes of the Darkness, Fallout Boy and Alkaline Trio and that experience has served My Awesome Compilation well. Throughout this album you'll feel the passion both lyrically and musically and I daresay this will see them reaching new levels and fair play to them. Remember the name 'My Awesome Compilation' and make sure you pick this baby up. 9/10

NADEEA VOLIANOVA - From Russia With.....: I came across this Russian born beauty on My Space and liked what I heard so I decided to drop Nadeea an email and here sitting in front of me is her debut album 'From Russia With...'. Some would argue that using their sexuality to sell records means they can't sing but in the case of Nadeea Volianova they would be wrong. This lady may have the looks but she's more than just a pretty lady being pushed by a record label. When you hear her voice you'll know what a great voice she has and I'm surprised Nadeea isn't a star around the world. What's more she writes her songs unlike many other female solo artists who have to sing what the record labels throw in front of them. On to the album now. Well there's sixteen catchy Pop and Techno tunes with a fair bit of Dance thrown in for good measure. Nadeea also drifts into a touch of Reggae with her song 'Jamaica'. OK so the songs may have a commercial feel to them but that's what adds to the charm of this release. Nadeea Volianova on the basis of this album has the potential to hit a wide range of people and quite rightfully so. The album is bubbly and captures what Nadeea is all about. Not only do you get a wicked, well produced album but it also comes with an eight page booklet featuring the lyrics and very hot photos of Nadeea Volianova. An album to be missed? Nope - It's an album to be bought and played to death. 9.5/10

OUT FROM ANIMALS - The National Curriculum: I don't really know about this single. Part of it likes the electronic rock sounds they play but another side of me thinks there's no room for electronics in rock music and I'm swaying to the latter to be honest. The three songs on here are catchy enough especially the title track 'The National Curriculum' and I'm sure many people will enjoy this release as the band play their instruments well. I just love my rock without all the pretty thrills that electronics brings and even though it does work it's just not my thing. 7/10

THE OUTLINE - You Smash It, We'll Build Around It: Hmm! I'm not too sure about this album despite playing it several times over the past fortnight. There's some great moments on this record but other times this band just sound so boring and so run of the mill and that's a crime as it's so obvious these guys can rock it out with the best of them. One thing that really annoys me with this album is the keyboard. I mean who's daft idea was it to add them? That move really didn't do this four piece any favours at all and killed of songs like 'Death To Our Enemies'. The few tracks that I did like included the opening number 'Aesthetics' but that's about it. The Outline should have stuck to the guitars and beefed them up a little rather than add that annoying keyboard. Not one of the best albums released this year and would have probably been better as an EP. 6.5/10

ROSABELLA GREGORY - Uncovered: Despite Rosabella Gregory being a very talented lady I'm struggling to find who she is targetting with it. The acoustic vocals accompanied by her piano playing are spot on but it's the kind of scene that usually gets artists no further than playing lounge/bars unfortunately. I think Rosabella should have added other instruments to beef up the sound a little and to add a little variety to her songs as they sound too similar. Even the fifth track 'Under The Rubble' which is based on a true story that focused on a man losing his family in the Iraq war didn't really have the passion it deserved. I'm sure this is why Rosabella hasn't move on and with a little more imagination in her music I can see this woman making major headlines. 6.5/10

THE RRRS - My Valentino/Forbidden Kiss: The Rrrs hail from the West Midlands are an are kick ass indie band that I think many of you will love. This four piece have a catchy guitar sound but what makes them stand out is the distinctive vocals from the gorgeous Sharzilla Moog. On the opening track 'My Valentino' sees the Rrrs come into their own with the catchiest number on this three track single. This track also shows what a wicked vocalist Sharzilla is. Slowing down things a little on 'Forbidden Kiss' shows just how diverse this band are yet still retaining that catchy guitar sound. A great song and I for one reckon given proper air time on the radio will see this band hit it big time on these two tracks alone. 'Credit Crunch' see's the band taking a more indie rock route and this song that the reviewers at NME will be raving about. A great debut single and hopefully leading the Rrrs to greater things! 9/10

STARK - The Curse: This album has been out for around four years now but still worth picking up as there's some good tunes on here from Lani Ford and Co. This is raw NYC sleazy Punk/New Wave being played with passion and you can hear that in songs like 'Look At Me', 'Slut', 'Wrong Guy', 'Beautiful Mistake' and 'Summer Girl'. I guess if you're going to compare Stark with any bands I would agree that crossing the Pretenders with Patti Smith is the nearest you're going to get. However the music Stark play isn't blatent copying and the same can be said of the lyrics too! Stark stand out as their own people and rightfully so too. Certainly an album worth tracking down. 7/10

STARK - Put It To Your Head: Three years on and Stark are back with a new album and this really does kick ass! Both lyrically and musically this is much tighter than their debut 'The Curse'. That break has certainly given Lani Ford food for thought and with those life experiences and changes in the band will certainly guarantee this is one of the best albums I'm going to hear in 2008. Opening up with the potent '18 Again' this album steams into wicked songs such as 'Dreams Come True', 'Nothing's Wrong', 'Reliably Disappointing Relationship' and 'Disturbed'. Lani Ford doesn't mess around here and for me has got to be one of the best artists to come out of NYC. Not only do you get a great album musically but the production is top notch and packaging is the tops too. It's great to read Lani's lyrics too - Even if you don't like the music then I'm sure you'll love how she writes. Yes check this baby out. 8.5/10

STORY OF THE YEAR - Wake Up: This is the first single to be released from the wicked 'The Black Swan' album which is a wicked release. Wake up is a great first single to be taken from the album as it captures the band at their best. Brilliant Rock with lots of catchy hooks complimented with some wicked vocals. I highly rate this band and if you're still not sure about them then this single is a great place to get an education. Wake Up certainly captures the bands new found spirit and I for one think this would be criminal if you pass up a listen of this band. 9/10

Their material is bouncy and up lifting that you can't help but get into this band. The two tracks on this release are worthy of being released as a single and my only gripe is that this should have at least been a mini album. The title track 'Pink-A-Pade' is a great song and well worthy of being released as a single. Having said that the flip side 'Fairies' is a good Indie song and is a great supporting tune to the title track. Yeah Sukie rock and I love what they do. 8.5/10

There's eleven tracks which blend in the sounds of punk, garage, rock and roll and rock which blew me away. The production from JJ Burnell certainly brought out the best in Louisa and Lucy. Just check out tracks like 'The Ex-Factor', 'I'm So Bored', 'Loser' and 'You Aint My Baby' and you'll find out for yourselves what a great album this is. 'Black Summer' has all the ingredients to be considered to be one of the best albums released in 2008 and it's certainly my album of the month.
