REVIEWS
It's been a great month for music with 5 artists getting top marks with their albums. When many claim that real music is dead they really do need to check out some of the quality releases I've had to review this month.
THE ADICTS - Songs Of Praise: I always found the Adicts a bit hit and miss to be honest thought it was great receiving this limited edition 25th Anniversary album through the post as I haven't heard the original release in years despite it sitting in my album collection gathering dust. Still if you're a fan of the Adicts this is worth picking up as I understand this album will come with the original recording and re-recorded version which makes this a must to pick up! All the tracks are here including 'England', 'Mary Whitehouse', 'Viva Le Revolution' and 'Songs Of Praise'. It was great hearing this band again and I'm sure you Adicts fans will be totally blown away. 8/10

ALFONZO - Shuma: This Scottish Indie-Rock band aren't bad at all and their new single is worth tracking down. Certainly playing high profile gigs with the likes of Snow Patrol and Feeder have helped this band develop and the results can be found on this single. The title track 'Shuma' is the strongest track by far but the flip side is certainly worth a listen even if it's just an instrumental. Personally I thought they'd have put a couple more numbers on here to help promote them much better as this single doesn't really grab you like it should do. 6.5/10

ALL THE WAY RIDER - The Eagles Revenge: Something that most British bands don't do and that is think outside the box when writing their music. They want to play it safe in case they are ridiculed for doing something different. However 'All The Way Rider' are a breath of fresh air as they take a vast range of influences from bands such as Porucpine Tree, Fugazi, Queens Of The Stone Age, Hot Water Music, Pink Floyd and Soundgarden. With taking all those influences and adding their own ideas they've come up with a rather good album well worthy of being given a listen. There's thirteen tracks in all and not one filler. Every track is given the same love and attention and that's what writing an album should be about. It's not often a visionary rock band comes along and when they do they should be made welcome with open arms. 8.5/10

ANN WEST - Missed It Again: Ann West a former model has been a busy lady in her life and now she's doing what she's wanted to do and that is sing. 'Missed It Again' is Ann West' debut single and what an impressive start. This is a great catchy pop song that should sell by the bucket load as it is really catchy and makes you feel good. The alternative radio version of this song is the extra track on this single and that's well cool too. Ann West is one beauutiful lady and what's more she's got a beautiful voice to match. Go on give her a listen. Ann West rocks! 8/10

THE BABYLON BUSHWACKERS - Happy Days With....: The Babylon Whackers is an all-star UK punky reggae party featuring Jonny One-Lung (ex-Filaments), Babar Luck (ex-King Prawn) and Majah Tunder with guest appearences from members of Suicide Bid and the King Blues. This has got to be one of the best albums I've heard this year and blows away all the other Ska/Reggae releases I've heard this year. OK so this isn't pure Ska but it has elements of Punk and Dub which gives this eleven track album plenty of energry from start to finish. From the opening track 'Greeting' these guys don't let up and what's so cool is that come the final track 'Marching Compromise' you are left wanting more! It's just a shame there aren't more tracks on this baby but with songs like 'Rudeboy', 'All Of Them' and 'No compromise' you're going to love it nonetheless. This album is the bollocks and any Ska fan worth their salt needs this CD in their collection. 10/10

BEN COOPER - Rockin': Ben Cooper former member of Rockabilly legends 'Restless' has penned a twelve track album. Not only that but he plays all the instruments on this recording too! If that wasn't enough the man even recorded the album himself! This is one album which most Rockabilly fans wont be able to do without. Rather than write something predictable Ben has played around with his own where some tracks are pure Rockabilly and some even pay respect to their 50's roots. Not only that but there's a couple of numbers that take the Rockabilly sound to a new direction and that can only be a good thing. The quality of the lyrics and music is high so yiou wont be fobbed off with an album full of fillers. There's some great tracks on here which include 'You're The Fool', 'Road Running Man', 'Celestine' and 'Wont Put Me Down'. Ben Copper is one artist that really does deserve to have his solo material heard. 8/10

CELLAR 170 - Promo: Cellar 170 are a newish band from just down the road from me and what I hear I like. Fronted by Lauren Diamond this kick ass alternative rock band will be going places in the next year or so if they're given the breaks as their style of music has much to offer. This promo contains three fully mastered tracks and two rough demos and not a bad song amongst them. The guitars/bass add to it's charm but the person who brings out this band is Lauren Diamond with her wicked voice. Just check out 'The Introduction' and 'Romeo And Juliet' for proof of that. What you have hear is a band that can offer you something really cool and in time these guys will be writing stronger tunes as they play more gigs etc. 8/10

CITY 13 - Better Late Than Never Again: I couldn't believe the quality of this album when I first heard it and now I've played it a few times it just keeps getting better and better. City 13 are a Wolverhampton based band who've gone into the studio to write a cracking album and they've accomplished that with style. From the opening moment of 'Suffer For It' the band steam roller through the remaining nine tracks with some very convincing hard edged rock with punk influences thrown in. There's not many British bands who could put out an album this good and for that you really should check out City 13. Influenced by the likes of The Offspring, Iron Maiden, Blink 182 you have to give City 13 credit for adding some of their own ideas which combining all that makes this a shit hot album. Not only that but the production is spot on too and this is where most British bands crumble with weak sounding recorsdings. Not City 13 though! They can safely compete with their American counterparts and probably knock spots off most of them too. A highly charged album with plenty of balls which just has to be heard. 9.5/10

THE COMANCHE CIPHER - Ludovico Technique: What a rather strange name for a band and EP release. Still I suppose it's better than hearing the same old rhetoric what is rife in the British music scene. Once you put on the CD you're treated to five tracks of progressive hardcore which is certainly gonna blow those cobwebs away. What you have here is something that is destined to challenge some of the more known HC bands as these guys are some what more original than what is about now. Tracks such as 'Swimming With Sharks' and 'Fall Of The Beloved' confirm it for me. If you want something heavy and original sounding then this release is certainly a good bet. If you want a tried and tested formula in HC music you must be mad as these kick ass. 8/10

CONTEMPT - Who Needs Diplomacy?: This is the third album from Contempt and even though it's been out a fair while this is well worth picking up if Hard edged Punk Rock is your poison. OK not as melodic as past releases but they make up for that for some tight musicianship throughout this fifteen track album. The lyrics are still spot on and socially aware and you'll find that they don't fuck around and just give it to you staright. Just check out tracks such as 'War For Oil' and 'Make A Stand' for proof of that. The lyrics deal everything from Animal Liberation to chinning Fascists to the shit going off in the Middle East. Martin has been at this for years now and I'm glad he's still at it. The only downer to recieving this great album is bassist 'Trogg' passed away after battling cancer. The man shall be missed. If Hard Edged Political Punk is your thing then give contempt and this album a listen. 8/10

DEADLY SINS - Selling Our Weakness: I've never heard of Deadly Sins before and I was so impressed I haven't stopped playing this album since I got it! This is great Rock N Roll with Dual female/male vocals from the gorgeous Stephanie Dougherty who I believe tours with the Drop Kicks and Billy Brown who also is the lead guitarist in the band. From the opening moments of 'Grey Skies Turn' you're treated to some kick ass tunes which include 'Dial Tone', 'Riot', 'Open Casket' and 'Non-Believers'. There's no compromise on here and all band members give it their best to give you a fresh and inspirational album. You're not going to get a better album this summer – I'm totally serious here. Deadly Sins rocks and I know you're gonna love 'Selling Our Weakness'. 10/10

DORP - Humans Being: I have to say that Dorp really can't be catergorised and that's a good thing as their brand of Rock and Electronics with Pop tunes thrown in here and there really do make this band. This thirteen track album is something that should take this band to a new level but only if the music industry stop playing it safe and give support to a band who aren't afraid to break the rules. While many bands are quite happy to throw in a couple radio friendly to bring them some attention the same be said of Dorp. Every song on this release is real and if the general public and music industry can't deal with that all I can say is that it's their loss! There's some great songs on here which include 'Cops And Robbers', 'Plug Into The Machine', 'London Out There' and 'A List'. Not only do you get a great album from start to finish you also get a top production so what you waiting for? Pick this up now! 9/10

DORP - Pigs Do Fly/Cops And Robbers: If you're new to Dorp then you need to pick up this Double A Single. The two tracks featured on this single are the opening two tracks from Dorps new album 'Humans Being'. Both are decent numbers and show what a quality band Dorp are. If you're looking for something that pushes the boundaries then I have to say this is the band you're looking for. Great stuff that does deserve to be heard. 8/10

ELIEEN ROSE - At Our Tables: I've only heard bits and pieces from Eileen Rose in the passed and wasn't too enamoured as her sound was more suited to the lovers of Country which really wasn't my thing. However this latest album see's Eileen blending Pop tunes with Country and what a difference it makes. Having members of Sponge playing on this release and a great producer in Rich Gilbert has helped Eillen write what I consider her best release to date. Not only is Eillen a beautiful woman but she also has an amazing voice and her guitar playing is wicked. There's eleven tracks in all and everyone a killer. What's more as a bonus you get a second CD which contains 7 live tracks from Eileen Rose. I've played this album a few times now and with every listen it just gets better. Comes well packaged too. Top release. 9.5/10

END OF ALL - The Art Of Democracy: I believe this is the third album from this Californian Grindcore/Death Metal band and I must say they've certainly upped the standard for this release. There's twelve tracks on 'The Art Of Democracy' and it's a fair bet to say their fans will be having a great time listening to this and you know what I'm sure they'll win some new fans over too. It's just sheer brutality all the way through and what's more the lyrics are well written too. Just check out tracks like '45 Statement', 'Henchman Of Hatred' and 'The Self Destructive Machine' and you'll realise where this band are coming from. Great production and well packaged too. 7.5/10

THE FAFF - That's A Nice Glove: The Faffs debut single is with us and what a release. They've put a couple of numbers on here that grab you and want you craving for more. I can see why they've had comparisons to the likes of the Artic Monkeys and the Klaxons as they too have catchy guitars with a chirpy front person delivering the vocals in style. While 'That's A Nice Glove' is the tightest track on the b-side 'Halves N Halves' isn't too far behind. I've a feeling this band are going to do well for themselves as they've got that something extra to them that not many bands possess. Certainly a band well worth tracking down. 8.5/10

FINGER ELEVEN - Them Vs You Vs Me: Despite this being Finger Elevens fourth album this is the first time I've heard this Canadian band and what I hear I like. I'm not surprised this album has already shifted over 500,000 copies in the USA. What you get for your money is an eleven track Rock album that incorporates other genres of music in the sound including Country and Funk. While some may be bored with the average Rock sound that most bands come out with you haven't heard nothing yet. You have to give this band credit for going beyond the norm and including other instruments such as the Banjo, Violin and Xylophones. Here you get a really good album and I'm sure many will get into this release. Certainly a good dose of Rock music that needs to be turned up loud. 8.5/10

FINGER ELEVEN - Paralyser: Personally I would have released this single before the new album was released so people can have a bit of taster before it's release. While this is a good single I feel that they should have featured more than just various edits of the same track. I'd have liked to have seen a couple more tracks from the band's new album or some live tracks from previous releases so the fans can get value for money. Can't really say any more as I've said it all above. 7/10

GIN GOBLINS - The Crime Of Our Lives: I haven't heard this Scottish band forever so it was cool that this 7" EP came through the post. The Gin Goblins play hard edged Punk Rock and the title track was by far the strongest number on here. Good solid Punk Rock played with balls. However for personal reasons my favourite track was 'Extremist' which is an Animal Rights which I was surprised seeing on this release as it's fair to say that the Gin Goblins aren't known for political thinking. They sum up my own thoughts about how Animal Rights activists are unfairly tagged. Like the other track 'Beware' the production isn't all that and given better studio time but if DIY Punk Rock is your poison I'm sure you'll enjoy this EP nonetheless. 7.5/10

GOLDBLADE - Mutiny: Despite the fact that Goldblade have been about for a fair while now this is the first time I've actually sat down and listened to a studio album by these guys. What I have sitting in front of me now is a thirteen track Pirate influenced Punk Rock album and you know what this is shit hot! While most of the British Punk bands are damned right boring and put out any old rubbish the same can't be said of John Robb and Co. From the opening song 'Jukebox Generation' there's just no compromise whatsoever and that's a good thing in my eyes. For proof of this just check out 'Riot! Riot! which is about the LAPD tear gassing the SOS punk Festival (Goldblade were playing this festival). Not forgetting other great tracks such as 'City Of Ghosts', America Destroys All It's Heroes', 'Kids of Today' and 'Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone'. If you're after a top notch Punk Rock Album then look no further. 9.5/10

GUILT TRIP - Suffer In Silence: 'Guilt Trip' are a melodic metal-core band from in the UK. All the musicians on here are experienced at what they do and in doing so have developed a rather tight sound. Not my thing in particular but this five piece have written album that most metal fans will enjoy. For me the better tracks on this release include 'Trying Words', 'Suffer In Silence', 'Interlude' and 'Passion Of Two Minds' almost certainly deserve a listen. Sometimes if you've not heard a band you wont take the risk but for all those metal fans out there these guys are worth taking the risk on. You'll find that out when you pick up this eleven track album. 8/10

THE HUSTLE - Promo: The Hustle are a five piece rock band from South Wales and on the basis of this four track promo they have the potential to do fairly well for themselves. The songs are simple yet catchy and for that reason I can see the Hustle reaching out to a fair audience. It helps having feel good factor songs like these and they're best played loud too for full effect. If you like catchy tunes then the Hustle are a safe bet if you want to check out a new band. Great musicianship and top production is the order of the day here. Check them out. 8.5/10

HIFI HANDGRENADES - Carry On: First off what a great name for a band. On the basis of the name alone I'd check them out but wait until you hear their music which will blow you away! There's ten great Punk Rock tunes on this album and there's some Rock thrown in here and there which certainly adds to its charm. No wonder Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters loves this band. From the opening moments of 'Cut Strings' you know you're on to a winner and it just gets better with tracks such as the title track 'Carry On', 'Face The Firing Squad', 'Heart Of Steal' and 'Sunset To Sunrise'. The musicianship is top notch with great tunes from John Speck and Tony Vegas on guitars who compliment the wicked bass lines from Rich Tschirhart . Not forgetting the tight drumming from Ryan Vandeberghe and the vocal delivery from John Speck. Cracking album and you'd be a nutter to pass this one up! 10/10

JOHNNY FOREIGNER - Salt,Peppa And Spinderella: This is the latest single to be taken from Johnny Foreigners 2008 album 'Waited Up Til it Was Light' and before it's even released I heard that MTV have banned the video to this single because tehy supposedly breach OfCom rules on strobing, fast cutting and flashing images which may trigger epileptic seizures!!! This Indie trio have been making a great name for themselves and this single is the latest of a liist of great songs put out by Johnny Foreigner. It's great to see a with dual female/male vocals being given a fair hearing in the UK as most bands with this set up are usually ignored. However it's fair to say that Johnny Foreigner aren't that easy to ignore. They let their music do the talking and this catchy single will hopefully send them up another level. Great guitars, Great vocals and what's more a sure winner for this Birmingham based band. 9/10

LAGWAGON - I Think My Older Brother Used To Listen To Lagwagon: Wow! What a great title for a release. Funny as hell! This new Lagwagon release is their first ever EP and what a cracker it is. This is certainly the best release I've heard from these guys in a while and when you hear it you'll probably agree with me too. This kicks of with 'B Side' and it's just gets bettter with every track and some of those numbers includes the wicked 'Memoirs And Landmines', 'Errands' and 'Fallen'. Seven tracks in all and a punk rock release that will certainly wet your appetite. Lagwagon have been going for over twenty years now and how they still manage to write great tunes after all that time is beyond me? Enjoy this EP as this is release that will be bringing oplenty of joy to the masses. 9/10

THE LEGENDARY RAW DEAL - Outlaw Man: This is the third album from a side project of P. Paul Fenech of the Meteors fame. Released in 1997 this has been hard to track down and has gone for silly money on sites such as E-bay but now Anagram/Cherry Red have given it the re-issue treatment. The reason why Mr Fenech had so many side projects is that he wanted to keep the Meteors pure Psychobilly and with his side projects he could experiment more. On Outlaw Man there's a much more Rock N Roll guitar sound compared to that of the Meteors and at times there's an added Western sound thrown in for good measure. It works and why so many people have been after it as the quality of work on here is top notch. Yet you only expect the best from P. Paul Fenech and it's fair to say he delivers. My only grumble would be the amount of tracks covered on here but at least Mt Fenech covers them well. Yeah one to check out if a fan of P. Paul Fenech. 7.5/10

LEVELLERS - Letters From The Underground: I've been waiting ages for this album to come out and it's been well worth the wait. I understand it's taken four years to write but it's been a wait worth having as the band are back on top form. Kicking off proceedings is 'The Cholera Well' which is a grand opener for some classic Levellers and it's just gets better from there with tracks such as 'Eyes Wide', 'Burn America Burn', 'Heart Of The Country', 'A Life Less Ordinary' and the closing track 'Fight Or Flight'. There's eleven tracks in all and everyone of them is worthy of being on this album. Some say the Levellers haven't done that much good stuff these past few years but I'm convinced even the most cynical will enjoy this baby. 9/10

OLYMPUS MONS - Nothing's Gonna Spoil My Day Today: This London based indie band are new to me but I have to say this album isn't bad at all. Imagine crossing the indie sound with early Buzzcocks and you get an idea what this band sound like. OK not every tracks works for me but the vast majority do. I like Twelve out of sixteen tracks that feature on here. I can see why they've been able to play shows with the likes of the Babyshambles. Opening up this album is 'Martial Law' and that really does get you into the spirit of things. For me tracks like 'Too Much Too Soon', 'Follow You Down', 'Give Action Purpose', 'Let The First Time Be The Last' and 'Sell Me To The Wind' are my favourite tracks on here. This is well produced and on most part a good listen so if the indie sound is your poison go out and pick this album up. 7.5/10

OLYMPUS MONS - Let The First Time Be The Last: If you're unsure about checking out the Olympus Mons then I suggest you pick up this single first. Any how this catchy indie number should wet your appetite for more Olympus Mons music. 7/10

PENDULUM The Other Side: Pendulum's newest release The Other Side is the latest track from their album In Silico. The Aussie band have produced yet another great dance track in their own particular blend of what many seem to term progressive dance. With hints of Daft Punk and Overseer, it is easy to see why the likes of Chris Moyles and many others rate this band so highly. Pendulum have managed to combine a classic heavy drum and bass beat with a synthesised rhythm that punches you right between the eyes. The Other Side comes as a four track single with remixed versions of the track and I have been playing this and the album endlessly in the car. Loudly. If you have not heard of this band yet, check out the album for a dance extravaganza that rivals The Prodigy. 8/10

PETE DU PON - Basket Case: When I first saw the press sheet to this I was excited about this wicked Green Day song being done a little differently. So out of it's case the CD was thrown in the player and when I heard what was on that disc I really didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I just didn't see the point of why this man re-worked the song at all and I'm surprised he hasn't been hung by Green Day fans for ruining a perfectly good song in it's original format. 2/10

POPE JOAN - Hot Water, Lines & Rickety Machines: It took me a little while to get into this release as it was a little too arty for me. I guess it's one of those releases that most people will either love or hate. Pope Joan can play and throughout all nine tracks on this release you wont find any fillers whatsoever and for those who get into this Pope Joan release will really enjoy tracks such as '49 Years Time', 'Nothing Is Too Much' and 'Our Cuisine'. To give you an idea of what these guys sound like I'd certainly compare them to a harder version of Bloc Party. They've also played some high profile shows with the likes of the Fall and The Hoosiers. If you like something a little different then I'd certainly give this band a listen. 7/10

STATIC THOUGHT - The Motive For Movement: Wow! This twelve track album blew me away and it's not been out my CD player since I got it. If you're after a Punk album that has Hardcore and Rock influences then this one should be a must. Not only that but Static Thought have some well written and thought provoking lyrics which fit in so well with the music. Epitaph Records were drifting into the scenerio where most of the bands on their label were sounding almost icentical. The same can't be said of Static Thought as they just blow everything else away on that label with this album. Damn! I love and wont stop telling you how good it is. Just have a listen to tracks such as 'Third World', 'Vindictation', 'How The Get By' and 'The Reason I Breathe' and try telling me this album isn't good. You'd have to be locked in a padded cell until you saw sense. Not only do you get a great album both lyrically and musically this is also well produced. California should be proud of this band. 10/10

SWCI BOSCAWEN - Eira Gwyn: Mared Lenny and Co are back with a great Indie Pop single that should be heard by everyone! Some may grumble that this Mared sings in her native language which is Welsh so that may restrict who they get through to. However with music isn't just about all lyrics being sung in English. It's about the passion and the feeling you get from that music which is more important and Swci Boscawen give you all that and more. The title track 'Eira Gwyn' is the best number on here but 'Un Matchen Sydd Angen' is a great compliment to 'Eira Gwyn'. I really do rate this band and I'm sure you will when you hear their great Indie Pop sound. Check them out! 8.5/10

SYSTEM NOISE - Give Me Power: Got this 6 track promo the other week and only got chance to listen to it today. What you have here is an Arty/Pop/Noise band that has elements of Blondie, Fugazi, Garbage, P.I.L. and Elastica thrown in giving you something very cool to listen to. Fronted by wicked vocalist Sarah Mucho this band really do kick ass. Kurt Leege really does the business on guitars and Dave's bass lines really work well with the guitars. Keeping it all in time is Paul Pouthier on drums. Between the four they produce some of the best music I've heard this year but the sad thing they'll never be huge as most so called music lovers couldn't deal with something so hot. 9/10

TEENAGE JESUS AND THE JERKS - SHUT UP AND BLEED: For those who are aware of Lydia Lunch will know who this band are. For those not in the know 'Teenage Jesus And The Jerks' were a 1977 Punk Rock fronted by the inafmous Lydia Lunch. I expect only fans of Lydia Lunch and the Riot Grrrl scene will appreciate this great release though. It's pretty basic Punk Rock with Screamo vocals delivered in style. It shouldn't work but Lydia's personality has made it work. There's 29 tracks in all including eight from Lydias other band 'Beirut Slump'. the other tracks are taken from 'Hysteria' album which is going for silly money these days. You can hear how Lydia and Co really did push the boundaries as NYC was still stuck in the Ramones/Stooges influenced bands. Teenage Jesus And The Jerks went along way to change that and indeed pushed many boundaries which were very conservative too. If you want something that showed some balls back in 77 then check out this release as musically it's spot on and the packaging is wicked. 8.5/10

TIFFANY APAN - Poet: Tiffany Apan has written a great album with Poet and I'm sure music fans who like to go outside the box will really appreciate this one. Tiffany experiments with the sounds of Ambience, Rock and even Opera with a touch of Goth influence for good measure. There's twelve tracks in all and not one filler. Every track has been given the same love an attention and that's what makes this album somewhat special. For me personally I really loved 'Free', 'A Prayer', 'Destiny's Path' and 'Warrior(Soldier For Myself)' though I'm almost certain that you'll find your own personal favourites on this album. Tiffany Apan has an amazing voice which works so well with the music which is of a very high standard. If you're after something that doesn't confine itself musically then you really should give 'Poet' a listen. 9/10

YOUNG HOLLYWOOD - Asleep At The Switch: I have to say these guys varen't bad musicians but the style of music they play needs to have a little more imagination thrown in as it's just too predictable. Having heard this EP a couple of times now you can hear the quality of the musicianship but they do need to open their minds and put something in there which other bands in their genre haven't done. I'm sure then they'll wina few people over. This EP isn't bad and if you like bands such as Ghost Of A Thousand and Glassjaw you may just like. Four tracks in all while none of them really stood out you could actually do worse. 6.5/10
