DJ Keri is a well known DJ, recording artist and has also modelled for the likes of Playboy. With three albums under her belt and many successful shows to her name Keri has done well for herself as DJ'in is a very short career span for many involved in this industry. However Keri is regarded highly and when you hear her tunes you can understand why. I'd heard some of of Keri's work through friends when previously in the USA and Ireland and was surprised when I found her on My Space. I decided to run an interview with Keri as she's one interesting lady and here's what she had to say for herself.

Street Voice: Keri can you introduce yourself to our readers many of whom will be new to your music?

My music crosses many boundaries and usually is very easy to like. I try to keep the masses satisfied by creating all sorts of different styles, yet still keep a lot of my own personal style incorporated within the productions.

Street Voice: You're a pretty much sought after DJ so how did you get into what you do?

Merely by accident, I was a surgical nurse in the U.S.air force for 8 years and on my off duty time I used to go to parties in San Francisco where I became acquainted with a very popular DJ named Carlos Hernandez. He taught me everything i know about DJ'n and he still is an icon in the S.F. scene.

Street Voice: Are there any artists, bands or DJ's that inspired you?

I am truly inspired by Anggun, her voice lifts my spirits and makes me want to do better every time I perform. I also love George Michael, Sting, Queen, & Prince. The DJ's the inspire me the most would be DJ Tracy, Carlos Hernandez, DJ Dan, Sandra Collins. . . Too many others to even mention.

Street Voice: You've pretty much played all over the world so what countries did you really enjoy to DJ in?

I loved Spain/Ibiza and I felt very much at home in Indonesia. I have a special place in my heart for China - I could live there very easily.

Street Voice: How do the fans compare in other countries to those in the USA?

Fans here in the U.S. don't show the same enthusiasm as fans in the Far East or even Europe for that matter. Don't get me wrong . . . They are just in love with hip hop right now and are completely focused on our economy to have fun anymore.

Street Voice: To date you've also written three albums and what I can gather have been very popular so was it always a goal to be a DJ and a recording artist and run them side by side?

No, not really, I always dreamed of being a singer mostly . . . The DJ gig happened pretty much at the same time while I was learning to produce so I just went with it.

Street Voice: When you write your music what kind of things do you write about when adding lyrical content?

I write about what I know, what I am feeling, what I am going thru at the moment. About how lonely the road can be, about how much I wish I could share the time I am away from my husband/kids with them . . . Wishing they could experience the amazing things that I've seen and done. It's not a sad thing . . . It's simply just the way it is.

Street Voice: Where can our readers pick up your past recordings?

Amazon or Yahoo . . . Juno . . . I-tunes or if they really want to support me . . . Contact me directly for product . . . That way I can really get the money that the labels are not giving me and I can give the people out there a better deal on a price/product.

Street Voice: So have you any news releases planned in 2008?

I just inked a deal with Pentavision to feature my hit "Beautiful Girl" on X-box. Soon, I will also be releasing my full album out within this year.

Street Voice: If you could share a stage with one DJ and one artists who would they be and why?

DJ: Dan - because no one has his finesse or style and I admire him so much. We are the oldest of friends and he hasn't changed one bit in the last 16 years that I've know him.

Artist: Anggun - hands down . . . She is the best vocalist in the world . . .
Even better than Sarah Mclachlan (and that's saying something!!!)

Street Voice: Where does Playboy fit in to all this? Did you model for them?

Playboy is like ancient history - it's been like 4 years since I've posed for them. I wouldn't object to doing another layout for them. I still have a rocking body at the age of 37 . . . If I say so myself (lol) . . . I do playboy events all the time all over the world . . . They are fun but I would like for the world to realize that I am a musician first . . . Not just eye candy! I have a brain too . . .I am very literate (surprise!!!)

Street Voice: You're a very beautiful lady so do you still do modeling assignments?

I haven't done any modeling this year (unfortunately) i have been concentrating on wrapping up production on my album. I do look forward to doing some soon however. I still have to do press from the upcoming CD.

Street Voice: You're also very healthy looking with an amazing figure so does it surprise you when there's so many young girls who want to ditch their curves to be wafer thin?

I would never starve myself just to "fit" in with Hollywood standards . . . It's ridiculous. A woman is suppose to be curvy . . . It's what attracts a man to a woman . . . It's sensual, soft and alluring . . .Why would anyone trade that to look like a skeleton?

Street Voice: You must be one busy person so what do you do in your spare time to relax?

I love spending time with my family, watching the latest movies on DVD . . . Shopping with my kids at the mall or antique shopping at the flea market with my husband, mike. We like to watch hockey games at Phillip arena whenever we can get our schedules to match up. We know how to enjoy life . . . House party's with friends . . . Just catching up and really loving one another for who we are. It's nice . . . And it makes life bearable.

Street Voice: Are there any plans for you to come to the UK/Europe in 2009?

Well, my agent seems to think so . . . For now, all I know is my Portugal agent is working on something for next spring. My Indonesian agent is shopping me around to several cigarette sponsors so that i can do a country wide tour. Not really sure what's going to happen here in the U.S. my China agent is always working hard for me . . . He usually brings me at least 2x's a year for 6 weeks at a time. The life of a DJ can be unstable and restless . . . You just have to take it with a grain of sand or you will go insane worrying about the future.

Street Voice: So have you had a pleasant summer and what have you been getting up to?

I've been in the studio a lot. I have done over 5 songs just in the last 2 months . . . Production and vocals all by myself. It's a challenge b/c I usually have an engineer to help me with things . . . But I'm stretching my legs a bit . . . And getting my feet wet by doing everything myself.

Street Voice: What are your plans for the rest of 2008?

I intend to continue to wrap up the loose ends on this upcoming album . . . Shop it around to a label that isn't crooked. . . . Hopefully, god willing, I will have some angels looking down on me and send me some blessings soon.

Street Voice: Anything you'd like to add?

I have learned that you need to have more than just a plan b . . . You need to have a plan c too . . . B/c you never know what life is going to throw your way. So to all you hopeful DJ's and producers . . . Don't bank on your talent to carry you into retirement. Get a 401 k . . . B/c 55 isn't that far away and you will need something to fall back on in order to support your self in your golden years.

Thanks to Keri for doing the interview. Hopefully if you're not familiar with her work you should check Keri out. It's not often that DJ's are featured in Street Voice but we simply couldn't ignore a quality artist and neither should you.
