Moth Complex I checked out on My Space and really got into their music so I dropped Aoife O'Leary a few questions. You can read what she has to say on behalf of her band below.

Street Voice: Can you introduce Moth Complex to the world please?

Moth Complex is an electronic rock band based in Dublin, Ireland. I'm the singer and in the band with me are Ronan O'Leary (guitar), Damien Murphy (drums) and Eoin Markey (bass).

Street Voice: Moth Complex is a rather strange name for a band so how did that name come about?

I'm not sure why I decided on "Moth Complex" specifically. It seemed to fit with the music in some way, I suppose. I came across an idea that a "Moth Complex" describes the way people are attracted to light. And that resonated with me because it felt like that's what I wrote the songs about… about finding my way. And I had the word "moth" in my head from early on, when I was just forming ideas for songs. So, somehow, Moth Complex it stayed.

Street Voice: How long have you been going as a band and what were your initial inspiration to play the music that you do?

The band has been together for a couple of years and I was writing songs for it with Gerry Owens for a year before that. I had been in different bands before, mostly doing backing vocals, but I wasn't happy. I really wanted to do my own band and make music that fused together all the music I love. I love the way electronics can give an edge or distortion to rock and I love how rock can give a grounding and force to electronics and I wanted to toy with all of that, and to write melodies over the top of it all for my voice as a kind of through-line. I just wasn't sure how to do it!! Then when Gerry and I started working together on Moth Complex, it all fell into place. I don't remember any initial inspiration, I was passionate about doing all this as far back as I can remember.

Street Voice: Have you released any material yet and if so where can our readers pick some up?

We've released an EP called "Error 256", which has been available through our website and various stores and internet sites. It's currently sold out, but no doubt we'll have more back in soon.

Street Voice: Aoife you're the main songwriter in the band so where do you get your ideas for your lyrics?

My songwriting basically comes from my own life. I write every day and it's all about my experiences or questions or feelings or adversity overcome or whatever – all of that. It all feels very personal for me – songwriting – and every song means to me in a different way.

Street Voice: So do you get to play many gigs in and outside of Ireland?

We have done, we've played in Germany and we're heading over to the US and Canada next year, which will be so exciting! And we're hoping to get to the UK shortly.

Street Voice: If you could just play with three bands who would they be and why?

Tough question. So many amazing bands. If I could choose for Moth Complex to play with three bands, I reckon two of my choices would be: Rammstein - cause of the sheer power of their shows in every sense. I think they've broken up now, but they'd be one for definite. And I love IAMX at the moment. I saw a show recently which was amazing. I love all the electronics and the intensity and dramatic live show. As for the third band, I have a load of them in my mind (some being Nirvana, Marilyn Manson etc) but specifically, I'm not sure. I'd love to play with a band from a completely different type of musical background and with a similar energy or approach to the music as MX – something strong and intense/full-on. Maybe a rap band/performer with a real force to the music. I don't know, words are failing me. But to create a really strong, clashing kind of show.
I'd go for that!

Street Voice: You're a very hot lady so would you ever use your sexuality to promote the band more or are you just happy to let your music and lyrics do the talking?

Haha. Thankyou. And I think no. Nothing against it though! I think there's space for everything and that some women who use sexuality to promote their music do it so well. The one that springs to my mind is Christina Aguilera in the video for "Dirrty" which David LaChappelle directed. I thought that was brilliant and completely sexual. But for me that's kind of more about entertainment and image and I see myself as a singer in a band. It's the music and singing and writing and playing and all that that drives me. And the energy of the band and the songs takes me over when we're doing shows. And being in a bra and knickers or wearing nothing in a video or onstage seems to be a different kind of thing. (I'll leave that to our drummer!) I'd feel like a complete eejit! And I like my energy and attention being full-on where I want it to be, on the music. So yeah I'm all for music and I'm all for sexuality but using one to promote the other just isn't for me.

Street Voice: Outside the band what do you guys get up to?

We're pretty much music nuts. We go to see bands, watch movies, hang out. I'd love to say more exciting stuff, but I'd be lying! I'm involved with everything to do with the band – I learned music software to write the songs in the first place, I learned editing software recently and then edited the video for "Tied Up In Knots", I plan everything – video, photos, I even make my own clothes for all of that. And we're working with people in the US and Canada at the moment, so I never stop.

Street Voice: What plans have you for the rest of 2008?

We just finished the video for "Tied Up In Knots" so that's on our Myspace, Bebo and YouTube. We're redesigning our website. Releasing the EP in the US and Canada, doing more shows. And a few other things are happening too.

Street Voice: Anything you'd like to add?

Just to say thankyou to Steve and Street Voice for interviewing me and to tell everyone to check out our band -
