Current mood:Rehearsing for the play!
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities
Hi everyone.

So, I've been doing a bunch of interviews over the past couple of months, and I realized something yesterday.  I'm running out of things to say about myself because honestly, there isn't a whole lot to say.  I'm simple folk, folks.  I don't have a million stories, I don't get involved in drama, or Hollywood, or glamour.  I'm really just some guy.  If I hadn't grown up in LA, I probably would have ended up doing community theater somewhere in between my part time job, filling the Hawaiian Punch machine at the chuckle cheese factory.  So, to talk about myself in great detail is just inherently strange for me and I don't think I'll ever get used to it.

There's no need to look up every interview I've done in the past 6 months.  You're gonna start to see the same answers over and over again.  Here's really all you need to know…

-I had fun working on Twilight, Joan of Arcadia, and Stargate.
-My favorite color is blue.
-I'm a drummer.
-I like movies and music.
-Acting is my life.
-I only watch sports during playoffs.
-I used to play poker.

Other than that, there's not a heck of a lot to say about myself.  I have tons of things to say on other topics (just ask my girlfriend), like politics, but why would anyone want to hear me talk about that?  To quote Jason Bateman, "I'm just a dumb actor who didn't go to college."  So where does this leave me?  I'm lost here kids.  I just want to act, hang out, and check in with you guys every now and then.  Simplicity is the key to happiness.  I don't need anything else.

And now, with your indulgence, a rant…

Celebrity culture has gotten so vapid and arbitrary.  It seems that Hollywood has forgotten its role in the world.  The priorities have shifted so far into a corporate system of meaningless "fame," things like quality and substance aren't even in the vernacular of today Hollywood executive.  And by the way, there should be a reason for being famous.  Good marketing and white teeth don't qualify as talent (sorry LC).

Our JOB is to bring you stories that stimulate your emotional sensors in order to keep you thinking, feeling, and dreaming.  Art is an important tool in keeping us alive, connected, and always searching for truth… Within that, our role as actors basically consists of dancing like monkeys for your viewing pleasure.  This is why I don't approve of actor arrogance and a demeanor of self-importance.  You're a monkey!  Shut up and dance monkey!!  You're not more valuable than anyone else.  You should be grateful just to BE a monkey.  It's a blessing…

Anyway, my point is this, and then we'll move on.  There is a place in the world for The Hills, Tila Tequila, TMZ, and all the other forms of empty, escape entertainment.  But there HAS to be balance.  Emotionally and intellectually, that stuff is the equivalent of fruit roll ups, and who can sustain a long-term diet of fruit roll ups for breakfast, lunch, and dinner?  It doesn't work.  Somewhere along the line, Hollywood has a responsibility to stimulate brain activity and put something out into the public that isn't just a generic, moneymaking machine (i.e. Disaster Movie).  It's not just about money Hollywood!  We have a monopoly over public entertainment, and with great power comes… well you know.

Alright, enough of that…

Rehearsals for Speech and Debate are going extremely well.  Tickets are on sale now at theblank.com.  September 13- October 26.  Four shows a week, Thursday- Sunday.  Thursday and Sunday: $22.  Friday and Saturday: $28.  I'd love to see some of you there.  You can meet the cast and crew after every show.  It's going to be a blast, I promise you.

A very happy birthday to my brilliant webmaster Holly.  And a good day to all of you.  TWI-HARDS rule!!

-Michael

Mike, I think I might be a little bit in love with you. lol. Your rant was spot on and I am SO grateful for celebrities like you who have their heads on straight and don't think the sun shines out their butt just because they made a big movie or TV show. Particularly if it was a BAD movie or TV show. lol. Thanks for being such a great actor, giving us so much entertainment to escape from real life with and for being so insanely down to earth that it's almost ridiculous. :) You are a fantastic monkey (hehe) and I'm so excited to see you in many things to come. Wish I could come see your show, but unfortunately distance puts a damper on that.

Hollywood is all about the money. If you wanna act - do an independent movie or theater somewhere away from Broadway since that became the place where the big names of the hollywood come to show they're just normal people like all of us... yea, right.
So, what is there to say? Nothing, really. If you're a girl and you don't look like LC you have nothing to offer. Screw talent and good acting, where're those beautiful legs or white teeth? We don't need you. I always said that everything will turn into one big soap opera. Ten years ago I was only 9 and said only people with no lives watch soap operas, and now everything is a soap opera - from drama to reality TV and even horror movies became a bit too... soap-ish, in a lack of a better word [yes, I probably invented one].
So, Michael, there's only one thing that's left to say - well done! Well done for being able to be a part of Hollywood and not become Hollywood, well done for being just a folk like all of us and not saying "I'm Michael. I'm an actor. I screwed over 3245641 girls. I have amazing abs. I work out twice a day. Oh, and I have no brain." Well done for being the way you are and not being afraid it would ruin your career, but being happy that you are not like the rest of the young Hollywood.

All the best,
-Jelena

OH WOW! lol i agree 100% with you! the fact that you have that much to say completely disregards the stereo-type, that actors are just celebrities. They are realy people too! they have feelings and thoughts and aren't just a puppet on a stick. They only take that form when they are doing their job, because it is their job. I would definately love to come and see the show its gunna be awsome and i'm looking forward to meeting the other actors as well. Thank you for being your hilarious self and reminding us all that hollywood isn't what people think it is. : )

You know, whenever I hear a comment about a monkey dancing, my mind always goes back to the movie Zoolander....weird...

Anyway, you are very right. Money isn't everything and neither are those pointless shows that everyone seems to be infatuated with. Sometimes, I think that Hollywood is made out to be this huge deal when in reality, it never was and it never will be.

I've come to respect actors a heck of a lot more ever since I started actually researching them. For example, I did some research on Kristen Stewart. She's one heck of an actress from what I've heard and seen, so I wanted to see what was going on there. I couldn't go onto some fan site and just assume that they were right. They point of views would be completely biased. So I watched interviews, trying to just get a hint of her persona. And it kind of worked. You can tell what a person may be like by they way they stand, how they speak, just everything.

And for all those people that believe that all actors are evil, money-loving, overall horrible people, dang ye all to heck!!!

I really enjoyed your blog entry!!!

Toodles,
-Laura *..^_^.r{}

Break a leg, Mike! I'm sure the show will be amazing and I wish I could come see it, but alas, it is too far away.

I absolutely applaud you for not feeding into the Hollywood sterotype and being sucked into that pit that seems to be drowning other actors your age. For keeping your head on straight and your feet on the ground. You are an excellent actor my dear, and I truly wish nothing but the best for you, and hope you can keep doing what you love for as long as you wish.

Bravo Mike. Bravo.

I completely agree with your rant! I hope Hollywood will follow your lead and understand that our culture needs to see more plots/characters with depth and emotion (please!) before our generation, and those to follow, grow up to be a lethargic society. Major kudos to you for staying so grounded and not letting the glam of Hollywood corrupt your perspective. I can't wait to see where your acting career takes you. =)

You're right. Shows like The Hills and all that, just are so...
what's the word? annoying? stupid? shallow? Hollywood does want to make money more than anything, why else would they move Harry Potter back to July of 2009? Because families are more likely to go watch it in the summer? -_-
Lol. I kind of just added to your rant a bit.

firs of all, sorry if my english has mistakes, i'm from spain and i usually have a good level of english, but today i'm a little tired :P so sorry.
second, i love your job. yes, i'm a twiliger, but i watched joan of arcadia some years ago, and Sincerely I was charmed with this series, your paper of swot me towards feeling identified, and me converti in your great fan. I believe that you have the whole reason, and it seems to me to be noble that you admit that you are a boy who adores to act, and as it I have my envy. For my theatre also it is my life, but lamentably I was not lucky to go out in a series of success, only I am in a local theatre, but since I do what I like, conform.
I hope that you understood my commentary, and thank you for being like that

I couldn't agree more. And not only in the acting industry, but in the music industry and entertainment industry in general. They're more concerned about image and exposure then their actual jobs, which is to entertain and make good movies, tv shows, music, etc. And it's even sad that I notice this when I'm as far from the entertainment industry as you could possibly get! hehe

Like someone has already said, it's refreshing to hear a young actor like yourself say those things. The only problem is that actors like you are fewer and far between but it's a great thing to hear that you are out there!

i know exactly how you feel. i was watching that keith olbermann episode where jason bateman said that quote and he talked about viewing the show with a dictionary at his side (which i admit i have to do as well, even though i'm in college!). should you feel super-bored, i'll post my take on the subject for you to read from a blog i wrote a few months ago:

"once upon a time i wanted to be an actress. i was determined to try for success in that field as long as the work stayed fun. but eventually i realized it was no longer the job for me.

the motion picture world is not what it once was. there used to be this sense of "old hollywood" glamour that made the corruption and scandals seem second to the brilliant work that was ultimately produced. not anymore. the raw talent of those (select few) in the film industry is rarely classified as interesting enough to sell their movies. the public views celebrity charity work as a bid for attention. instead the media is concerned with the latest celebrity jail sentence or coke binge. surely there are exceptions among modern day hollywood - admirable down-to-earth givers, genuine people, and strong women i would still love to be like - but it's not the hollywood i longed to experience.

for me, a single personal realization explains why i don't want to be a movie star anymore: i've come to understand that i am a very private person. in the age of myspace and facebook, it may be hard to see how i could lay such a claim and still function as a twenty-something today, but the truth is, i value the effort of someone who works to get to know the real me. i can create a persona/profile that makes me look good, but i don't consider that any great achievement. i don't believe in on-paper compatibility. i want relationships where people have to learn my quirks the old-fashioned way: observation. i still have a bit of that very theatrical need for attention, but i'm more choosy with my audience now. bodyguards are up and protecting my dirty laundry from the paparazzi. it will take actual (a.k.a. off-screen) chemistry with someone special to elicit the serious vulnerability that is required on my part for me to learn how to be myself with someone else. i'm tired of performing. i'd rather see if i can be of some assistance to whoever's waiting in the wings."

<3 <3 best of everything to you and yours mike/ mike ;)

Michael, this blog is simply fantastic. I'd have to agree with it entirely. I have hopes that I may someday too have the honor of becoming a monkey, haha.
Anyway, I have a quote by E.E. Cummings that I think you will appreciate. It speaks volumes to me.

"A real human is somebody who feels and who expresses his or her feelings. This may sound easy. It isn't. A lot of people think or believe or know what they feel---but that's thinking or believing or knowing: not feeling. And being real is feeling---not just knowing or believing or thinking. Almost anybody can learn to think or believe or know, but it's very difficult to learn to feel. Why? Because whenever you think or you believe or you know, you're a lot of other people: but the moment you feel, you're nobody - but-yourself. To be nobody - but -yourself-- in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else--means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting. As for communicating nobody-but-yourself to others, that means working just a little harder than anybody who isn't real can possibly imagine. Why? Because nothing is quite as easy as just being just like somebody else. All of us do exactly this nearly all of the time--and whenever we do it, we are not real. If, at the end of your first ten or fifteen years of fighting and working and feeling, you find you've loved just once with a nobody-but-yourself heart, you''ll be very lucky indeed.

And so my advice to all young people who wish to become real is: do something easy, like dreaming of freedom--unless you're ready to commit yourself to feel and work and fight till you die." -E.E. Cummings
