did you know…The lead singer of the Magic People used to be the drummer in Neptune! It’s true! John Manson had been drumming for dissolving noise rock legends The Grand Island when he joined Neptune in 1999, the year that Jason Sanford presented Neptune as his MFA thesis at MassArt. He and Dan Boucher were responsible for the band’s signature rusted metal percussion for three or four years. John was getting tired of sitting behind a drum kit, though. Deep in his heart he knew that he could be the next David Lee Roth! So, soon after guitar brobdingnagian Mark Pearson joined the band, the three of them started the Young Sexy Assassins with Grand Island bassist Justin Stratman and keyboard millionaire Duncan Smith. Justin and Duncan were both giants in their respective fields of rock, but had also recently with their respective wives joined the ranks of fathers. Pretty soon Duncan stopped showing up for his rock responsibilities and was replaced by noted contemporary composer David Gerhard Utzinger. When Justin became too interested in "paternity" to be a real touring artist, John and Dave decided to form another band with the intention of a European tour first-most on the agenda before any musical ideas. Scraping the pavement for "boy band" material, they found Rev. Al Deaderick, who was living with Jason at the time. Deaderick hadn’t picked up an instrument since a traumatic piano recital in the late eighties, but he had the look and the hair that could carry a modern rock sound. Soon there was a band called Magic People getting the chic peoples of Boston excited to go out into the clubs again. The rest is Boston Noise Rock history!
