CSNY/ DÉJÀ VU

A film by Neil Young

Neil Young's new film CSNY Deja Vu comes to UK cinemas on July 18th.

Also available from July 18th on Film Flex in Movies On Demand on Virgin Media

The war in Iraq is the backdrop as the CSNY "Freedom of Speech Tour" crisscrosses North America. The film examines the band's connection to its audience in both political and musical terms, and examines the relationship between Vietnam-era anti-war sentiment and today's post-9/11 environment. A Vietnam veteran sums it all up: "It's deja vu all over again."

"One of the finest music documentaries in recent memory… a resounding success"

Time Out ****

"An exceptional rockumentary...riveting!"

Empire ****

Featuring: David Crosby, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Steven Colbert

Short Synopsis:

The war in Iraq is the backdrop as the CSNY "Freedom of Speech Tour" crisscrosses North America.  The film examines the band's connection to its audience in both political and musical terms, and examines the relationship between Vietnam-era anti-war sentiment and today's post-9/11 environment. A Vietnam veteran sums it all up: "It's deja vu all over again."

Long Synopsis:

Since their debut in the late 'sixties, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young have functioned as the "town criers" of their generation. With songs like "Ohio" and "Find the Cost of Freedom", CSNY were in the forefront of Vietnam-era protest and anti-war sentiment. Though fondly remembered for their harmonies and love songs, the band has never lost their political edge.

"CSNY: Deja Vu" finds the band heading out on their "Freedom of Speech 2006" of North America, featuring music from Neil Young's controversial "Living With War" CD. With "Embedded" reporter Mike Cerre aboard, the film documents audience reactions to the music and the band's ongoing connection with its fans, all against the backdrop of the Iraq/Afghanistan War.  The film also examines events surrounding the Tour in the crucial election season of 2006.

Songs from the tour are woven together with archival material, news footage, and audience reaction and observations, as the film examines the issues surrounding the integration of politics  and art.

About the Director:

Bernard Shakey is the autocratic Svengali behind a series of films featuring Neil Young.  His films include (Journey Though The Past, Rust Never Sleeps, Human Highway, greendale). His company name, Shakey Pictures, provides an apt description of the relationship between the director and Mr. Young.

Excellent - can't wait to see it. Was just recently listening to 4 WAY STREET and thinking how utterly wonderful you all were together ... and now with the added intellect and humor of Steven Colbert - this is a must see.

That was a great tour, Neil. I travelled over 700 miles to see it at the Hollywood Bowl. Seeing you guys made me proud to be an American (once again!). Can't wait to see the movie. I hope you include the whole show on the DVD version.

Déjà Vu is one of the greatest albums ever made, barr none! This is one of my personal favorites. To know that a documentary has been made about the creation of this album is very exciting. When is the U.S.
release?

I flew 1200 miles, in June 2006, to see this show in the town Neil grew up in. I drove the same Denver Boulevard three times in a week to see three of the shows at Red Rocks, in Morrison Colorado, the next month. The first night I hiked ten miles over the hillsides of Colorado, to make it there before the show started. Photos I took of the show, the last night I was there, are available at my own myspace page. The one constant was "Living with War" in the stereo of my car.

What impressed me most about the shows that I saw was the fact that Steven, Graham, and David would take the time to learn all of the songs from "Living with War" and play them consecutively, at the shows. There was no ego. Just love....and belief that his songs spoke for all of them.

"The Restless Consumer" might well describe all of the years since CSNY first hit the top ten charts, until today. Those of us who have loved the band since that time, can verify the fact. "Looking for a Leader" supposes that Barack Obama may be too young. As one who served under Colin Powell; I suggest that he is not. It is up to us, and to those that we can influece, to demonstrate that he is not. JERRY PAUL WALLACE NORTH PLATTE, NE.

p.s. My only regret was that Neil had his pipe organ set up at all the shows I witnessed, and never played it once. Perhaps he will at my next show.

As a male who grew up in the Vietnam era, ( I even still remember my Vietnam Draft "Lotto" Number ) this up coming tour brings back bad memories I see a lot of what is going on now that happened in the Vietnam era. ( Did we ever learn from that war? ) Republicans are still in power, a weak economy, apathy regarding the Iraq war and the men and women fighting in it ( on both sides ). As citizens of the United States of America, we are now harrased by the current Republican administration electronicly, meaning its ok to wiretap phones, search our homes, plant "live" audio bugs on our person in the name of "National Security" and Homeland Security, etc. The day the president decided to meet force with force was the day that he changed our lives forever, for we will forever live in fear. He made the wrong decision and it saddens me that he will never know, from his actions, how much pain and suffering he has caused throught the world as a result of his actions. Like all the bad people throughout history, the president will never be held accountable for his actions.
That totally sucks!!

At least I hope we learned to separate the soldier from the war this time. Whether you're pro or con, don't blame the G.I.!! I still remember the signs on some businesses, "no cats, dogs or G;I;'s".

The 1st song I learned on guitar was 'Helpless" (While I was in army). I love everything Mr.
Young has done!! Keep up the great work!!!!!

Hey, hey, my, my. Thank you, Neil. You rock! It's great to see something anti-war in the visual arts. Although there is a lot of deja vu in regards to the repeating of the Vietnam syndrome by government in the Afghanistan/Iraq genocidal debacle, unfortunately there is not the same level of "deja vu" in relation to the actions and reactions of young people today.

Whereas the antiwar movement was doubtless instrumental in bringing the Vietnam war to a close, there is no real antiwar movement today which could prevent any further genocide in the Middle-East. Already more than a million have been killed in Iraq. But where is the public outrage? Where are all the works of art from the famous which could be arrayed against this? The best we can get is John Meyer's ineffectual, "Waiting on the World to Change" - a paean to powerlessness. Sad.

I've been in regular e-mail contact with people who live in Baghdad and I can tell you that they regard us with contempt for passively allowing their country to be destroyed by the US military. And if we blithely claim that we were powerless to stop it, they rightly say "Why didn't you block Washington with a few million people who would never leave the streets till it stopped?" Our inaction and passivity has been staggering.

The USA has already been taken over by a coup d'etat. In spite of the hopes and dreams of many today, Obama will not stop this. He is already in the pocket of the power elite which controls the country. It is only we, the people, who can make a difference. But it will take masses of us. Revolution begins with US. It is WE who have to be the change. (Please listen to my song called "Be the Change" on my MySpace profile, which was a response to John Meyer's song).

Neil, you have always been an inspiration to me. I love you to bits. It's good to see you together again with CSN. Thanks for your latest film, which I look forward to seeing soon.

With love & light,

Alan

What we need to do is focus on what "we do want" instead of focusing on what we don't want. We have the capability within each of us without guns, bombs and whatever and what's more........it works.
People only need to learn universal law and to utilize what the creator gave to each and every one of us!

"Ester Hicks" describes this perfectly......

You say,"the antiwar movement was doubtless instrumental in bringing the Vietnam war to a close". I believe that the Nixon/Johnson administrations tollerated the movement, but they certainly were not instrumental in bringing the Vietnam war to a close. The only movement instrumental in bringing the Vietnam war to a close were the Vietnamese people ( THEY KICKED OUR BUTTS AND CHASED US OUT OF THEIR COUNTRY!! ). And rightfully so.

You also say,"there is no real antiwar movement today which could prevent any further genocide in the Middle-East." Do you honestly believe that both president Bushes would have listened to a modern day anti-war movement?? Not when both of them have a BIG CHIP ON THEIR SHOULDERS, and obsesed with controlling oil ( cough, Dick Cheny, cough!! ). Being in the anti-war movement, now days, means you have to deal with and be harrased by Homeland Security Dept ( America's answer to the Gestapo ). They are probably monitoring this post right now. Don't Laugh. I am fricken scared to death of Homeland Security!!!!! Yes, Homeland Security...I call that movement "Double-Talk" and a big excuse for the Goverment to do whatever the hell they want in the name of Terrorism. Yeah, being in the anti-war movment sure aint what it used to be.....in fact if you would probably find yourself stuck on Guantanimo Bay getting tortured ( an no one would ever know... ) PEACE!

Nothing makes me more happy then to see, that CSNY By Neil Young- will make people open their eyes and be aware of world politics- I guess more or less we are all aware of the issues, But being more active could help us and the coming up generations-
When I first heard way back the version of the song " Blowing in the Wind" by Neil Young could really feel it down my spine- all that Happened in Vietnam!!!! He Song gave the picture of reality!!! The version of the song by Bob Dylan was more like smoking pot, No offence please- when the war was going on I wasnt that old-
World has seen wars!!!! only those who have actually lived and suffered- watched and faught, only know that theres no winner, All losers- I grew up ( barely 6yrs old ) in 1965 with a war going on, and no one can take that horrible experience running into trenches-etc
People have suffered and are suffering more today!!!
Good Luck!
Thanks Again!!! PEACE and Smiles

Neil, I love your music but disagree with your politics. I have a problem with CSNY overlooking the several hundred thousand lives taken by Sadam and his henchmen plus innumerable number of rapes and tortures. Where was your outcry then? Or does there have to be some blame associated with America before it is appealing to your liberal fan base? I also have a problem with CSNY's total silence on the killing of the unborn. Where is your anguish when a baby's skull is crushed during a partial birth abortion. To me your band have simply become shills for the Democratic party. I attended your "Freedom of Speech" tour and saw the voter registration table for the Democratic Party. The corresponding table for the Republican party was nowhere to be found.

WOW IT IS 1:35 HERE IN LONGVIEW TEXAS AND ----JUST FINISHED WATCHIN Charlie Rose program with the humble Mr. Neil Young!!! 1). I want to be a part of the PLAN. 2). I believe in what Mr. Young -and Willie Nelson are doin, I think the content of interview/prog. was AWSOME!! If you have seen it REMEMBER IT and do something. And if you haven't please do yourself a favor and watch it-somehow get your hands on it, it was very moving, inspiring, and VERY Intellectualy sp? LOL gratifying. And then do something. 3). I also believe in " it's a bad war" and a bold but doable vision having no gas stations, and plugging your car into your house, maybe a solar ran one that gave energy back into the grid. It sounds like stuff outta the SHOCKING magazine POPULAR MECHANICS Tx humor I would dare say. I am not sure what I want to b when I grow up @ 44 but I now know what I want to be doing and a part of now. Great to see Neil Young, he looked Great and so did Mr. Rose!!! I'm very excited and and probably sound like an ass, but THAT (well cant spell definatly) would not b the first time I looked or sounded like an ass. Great stuff man, gotta find my position in the scheme of Global/ Social help. Thank you Mr. Young.
