"No one wins.  One side just loses more slowly."  -Roland Pryzbylewski, aka 'Prez' from The Wire

I can't say enough about how much 'The Wire' has inspired me as a writer.  Aside from its brilliant mix of drama, tragedy, and social commentary, I above all else admire the way that David Simon and Co. keep pushing on and outdoing themselves each season.  Despite the show not getting the credit it deserves, the writers and actors continue to elevate their craft and produce what is, in my opinion, the greatest televsion series of all time.  When asked about the show's failure on a widespread commercial level, Mr. Simon said something to the effect of:  'We've been fortunate enough to last for five seasons, and as long as you can make a living saying what you want to say, there's not much you can complain about.'  I'm paraphrasing, but that sentiment helped put alot of things in perspective for me during the making of this album.

In writing this joint, I drew on inspiration from a conversation I had at Jazzy Jeff's crib.  We had just finished recording "Whatever You Want" from his 'Return of the Magnificent' LP.  It was the first song I had ever done a full R&B vocal for and while he loved it, I wondered if people would take it seriously:

Me:  "Man, this sounds dope, but do you think people will believe it?"
Jeff:  "Dude, you knocked that shit out faster than alotta niggas who call themselves singers!  This shit is fresh!"
Me:  "Thanks, bruh...but like, do you think my fans will accept it?"
Jeff (soundin like an angry version of Jaz from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air):  "Dude.....FUCK A FAN!  FUCK WHAT PEOPLE THINK!  Nigga, do that shit for you!"

On the ride back to the crib, I thought long and hard about Jeff's words and even harder about my current situation.  It seemed like everytime I opened my mouth, I was saying something that nobody wanted to hear (c) Bunny Colvin.  My label, my family, my hometown, my 'fans,'.....no matter what me and Pooh did, it seemed that nobody was ever fully satisfied.  The only people we could ever satisfy were ourselves, so I figured, fuck it, I might as well just do me.

Me and Pooh both agreed that we didn't want 'Getback' to be a bitchfest/pity party, so we decided to use this one song to air out our frustrations and bring people up to speed with all that had happened in the past year.  (Pooh, before steppin in the booth to drop his verse:  "Man, now I see why EPMD and Tribe and all them niggas broke up......its like bein stuck in a marriage to a bitch you cant stand....")

This was one of the few songs that me and Pooh both nailed the first night and didn't do any alternate takes, so there's not much difference between this one and the album version.  The only edits in this version were made to Pooh's outro so we could make a better segue into the Khrysis-produced joint we did with Rhymefest. (We later decided to scrap the Rhymefest song in order to keep the album moving and not slow down the pacing.) In this version, you'll hear me and Khrysis' original segueway into that song.

The Bad Ass Filipino who produced this joint was supposed to send me a video to accompany this blog, but he never did.  Please send him hate mail and gas faces at www.myspace.com/illmind...lol

See ya tomorrah (c) Tribe

I had to turn the song on to leave this comment....

I feel the same way about "The Wire". That show is the best thing to ever come on the TeeVee...period.

As far as pleasing people: HA! That shit will never happen. There is no way humanly possible, due to our inescapable humanity, our nature. Ya'll niggas (hell, me too) need to continue to push on in pursuit of your own happiness, cuz ultimately nobody is gonna love you like you. Be satisfied w/your own shit at the end of the day. And if other folks end up satisfied with it too, then that's just gravy.

Mmmmm...gravy.

lmao @ Bad Ass Filipino

The segueway to the Fest joint changes the pace to abruptly so you were right for taking it out.

As a fan, music is better in general when it's made the way the artists want to make it, so in a way you doing you is doing us a favor and supplying us with good music. So keep doing you Phontigga.

What up Phonte? Actually "Can't Win for Losing"'s my favorite track on the album. But one of my favorites of all was the "Doing Me" off the Chitlin Circuit album which discusses what you're saying in this blog. Real fans understand & will grow with you. I haven't heard the song (at the moment, I'm checking after this comment), but remembering your contributions with Foreign Exchange, I doubt if you lose your real fans. But like Jeff said, do you, man. That's what got you your fans.. Doing You. Mad love to you, LB's, & all you do.

ALL TRUE TAY. Most artist would be skerred to say f@& a fan (out loud at least). At the end of the day everyone is selfish (or should be ). The reasons behind the selfishness is what defines the person.

Monalisa Is Thankful

tay you remember the cartoon about owl jolson that wanted to singa, about the moona and the june and the springa, he liked to singa, etc... u remember at the end his family realized that singin made him happy and it was something that people wanted to hear him do, so they ended up supporting him and doin the cupid shuffle... your fans and fam can feel it more when its something that YOU truly love to do, and they can also tell when you don't love it... so do what you love and sang the song like i told you to (c) ike turner (rip)

I cant speak on the wire. my cable got cut off too many times for me to keep track of it...lol

Co-Sign on THE WIRE. Best damn show period. It's a shame that it gets overlooked by the commercial public because it's so great on so many levels.

Well, I'm glad that you guys are over that people pleasing BS. If that is what you feel like was holding you guys back creatively in some way, I'm glad y'all let that go. I believe the key to doing anything new is to be honest with it and fully commit to it, no room for half-stepping!

Um...a callabo with Rhymefest was going to be on here? Are y'all going to have a GET BACK B-SIDES MIXTAPE or something? I would like to hear the songs that didn't make on this album.

-D

it's funny cause as i'm reading this i'm feeling where you're coming from. i'll never forget that night at the union when i was first introduced to little brother. but even after your first album dropped and all the promotion you guys did on the yard, it seemed to me like nobody really cared. just because you're not mainstream, (read:mtv/bet/radio) it doesn't mean that you don't deserve to be heard. good music is good music.....and as you can tell by the increase of your fan base over the years, you've got some good shit. ok, i'm jumping off my soapbox now.

Tigallo Coleman, I'm givin' you 2 kudos just for spelling "Filipino" correctly, my man!

Too many people, even those with a collidge edumacation, be spellin' it all sorts of messed up, for example: Phillipinno, Philipino, Phillippino...just all jacked up.

BTW, y'alls show in Richmond at Toad's Place was super dope! $50 show for a $15 ticket! Cats need to take notes on how to entertain a crowd and rock a show from y'all!

So, basically, us loyal LB fans are gettin' a Getback 2.0 just for checkin' your blog daily? "Shweet!" © Hova
I guess that's my return for investing in 2 copies on Getback! and I NEVER buy 2 copies of ANYONE'S album.

Lookin' forward to the 4th album and another show!

MERRY CHRISTMAS Y'ALL.....

I KNOW I'M MAD LATE WITH BOTH THE CHRISTMAS WISH AND THE BLOG....

WHEN I WAS READING YOUR CONVO WITH JAZZY, IT MADE ME THINK OF TWO THINGS:

FIRST, ONE OF THE (MANY) THINGS THAT MAKES LITTLE BROTHER DOPE, IS THE FACT THAT YOU GUYS HAVE ACCOMPLISHED SO MUCH AS A GROUP WITHOUT THAT STATUS QUO VERSION OF SUCCESS! LOOK AT YOUR FAN BASE! YOU GUYS HAVE SPARKED A MOVEMENT, AND EVERYBODY I TALK TO, THAT HAS HEARD OF YOU GUYS, SAYS Y'ALL ARE HOT. PERIOD!

SO YEAH, I FEEL JAZZ ON THAT "FUCK A FAN" STATEMENT BECAUSE, IN MY OPINION, THAT'S WHAT GOT YOU GUYS TO THIS POINT. NOT GIVING A FUCK ABOUT WHAT THE AVERAGE LISTENER THINKS IS HOT, BUT WHAT YOU KNOW TO BE HOT, IS WHAT MAKES Y'ALL HOT!

SECOND(LOL) I JUST DID A SONG WITH MY BOY AND OUR STYLES ARE DIFFERENT, SO OUR VERSES REFLECT THAT. HE LIKES THAT GANGSTA SHIT, WHILE I LIKE MORE LYRICAL, PERSONAL SHIT. BUT WHEN WE PLAYED THE SONG, HIS FRAT BROTHER ONLY COMMENTED ON HIS VERSE AND DIDN'T SAY SHIT ABOUT MINE.

AT FIRST I GOT KINDA PISSED, BECAUSE I KNOW MY SHIT WAS HOT AND VERY CLEVER! BUT THAT'S WHEN I REALIZED, THAT'S IT! I DON'T NEED NO OPINIONS, CUZ I KNOW MY SHIT WAS HOT!

FUCK THE FANS NIGGA!!!! LOL
