They call Christmas time the
greatest time of the year. For many that are prone to depression, it
is the hardest. The economy issues vastly increase the dangers. Four
out of ten will experience some form of depression this year. The key
is being proactive
What to do for you.
First of all be aware even
if you are not someone who is prone to depression, it is beneficial
to be aware of the signs. Depression awareness especially in this
social climate should be a learned by all. Ignoring the signs or
blowing off someone else who exhibits them with a platitude of cheer
up could have severe repercussions. The some of the signs are:
Abnormal change in
activities.
Over
indulgence or fixation is as much of a red light as lack of interest.
The key is that it is a change in behavior from what was the norm.
Excessive expression of
loss or worry
There
is a difference between a worrier and someone who
borderlines fear or seems to be
incessant about much to do about nothing. A dead giveaway is if they
can't explain where the feeling is centered.
Crying spells
Pretty
much it is the same as the above. Men and women share a sexist
attitude here. For women they well chalked it up to hormones.
Actually, they are dead right because depression is caused by a
hormonal imbalance. At this time you need to play it safe so no one
is sorry.
Sudden
loss or gain of weight.
Again
it is not only abnormally quick but the person will try to avoid the
subject The will probably have a severe sensitivity on the subject.
An abnormal sleep pattern
The
variations here are many. It could be a tendency to sleep too much or
the inability to sleep. An overlooked sign here is inability to sleep
past an unusually early hour and or an inability to stay awake at an
incredibility early hour at night. What people do is write off the
early evening problem as an offset to early morning rise. The red
light occurs when the person has this regardless of whether or not
they followed the pattern. The tendency is to chalk it up to the
biological clock. For instance one woman I know would not be able to
sleep past 5:30 even if she went to bed at 5:00. In fact this led to
times she would not sleep for days on end.
Paranoia
This
goes beyond sensitivity. Plus the disruption of the biological clock
concerning sleep patterns is a common known link to paranoia.
Paranoia is an indication of at least the beginning of major
disorder.
Illogical decisions or
reasoning.
A
common symptom here is assigning unreasonable blame. In fact the
person may just blame someone else for their depression. It is not
uncommon for the person who has been most active in helping to be
targeted. This will go hand in hand with other off the chart
decisions. It is almost a one plus one equals three type of logic. It
is so obviously off.
Internet addiction
We are
talking about people we take up living a life through the internet.
They literally go from an active living person to a passive person
limiting their personal intearaction to the internet. People laugh
at this but it is a very real affectation grown out of depression
.
The other side of
depression
The
commercial slogan goes something like this, “Who does depression
hurt? It hurts everyone.” That includes those that care. It also
can afflict anyone. You don't need to have a history to suffer the
illness. Don't just be there for a partner or friend. Be there for
yourself. Who would you be helping, everyone.
