(you can get the string im talking about at any fabric store...or see end of post to see how to order one.)
the basic idea of sie purple string:
-an easy way to i.d. each other as lesbians on the street or at starbucks
-wear a purple string of yarn around your wrist to indicate that youre a lezzy/lady-lover
-spread the word to your gays.
-i get to hit on you without being worried that youre straight.
-world domination.
-update: check out stephanie's comment below. she suggests that if you wear the purple string on your right wrist, it means youre single. if you wear it on your left, it means youre taken. i *heart* that idea:-)
-update 2: lots of girls have asked if they should wear this if theyre bi. my opinion is, if you are interested in other women, and want them to be able to identify you as a lady-lova, then yes, you should! if the girl at the starbucks (see story below) was wearing a purple string, and i went up to her and we started talking, i wouldnt care if she was bi because its about the conversation *we* were having. not about who she sometimes dates. to me, the purple string is more about a subtle way to i.d. a chick who you have a chance with and/OR have something in common with, than as solely a lesbian pride thing. its about BOTH, but to me, its more about the i.d. yeah, and for the record, um...no, i dont think guys should wear it (someone asked!).
the story:
last monday i was sitting at a Starbucks, sippin on a caramel frap, and waiting on someone to show up for a meeting i was having. the person ended up being about 45 minutes late (we got our wires crossed). normally, i would have been a bit impatient. a bit perturbed. try to guess why i didnt mind sitting there for 45 minutes.
yep, you guessed it: a hot girl. she was studying for a college course and she was sooo my type. so i sipped...and i stared. and i pretended not to stare. and i sipped some more and stared some more. i imagined walking up to her and telling her that she was beautiful and that the way she wore her jeans and hoodie were just perfect. and i imagined her saying "thank you!" and jumping into my arms, and us doin it in the parking lot.
but i couldnt tell if she was a lesbian or not, so i didnt even try. i never got a chance to see if she'd shoot me down. i never had a chance to maybe strike up a conversation with her and find out that she was in fact, the woman of my dreams, and vice versa. all because, there is no bulletproof sign to let us know who the lesbians are. you
could wear one of my homogirl shirts, and they
have certainly helped! but you cant wear them every day...and sometimes you have to be more discreet than that.
so in those 45 minutes, i came up with an idea that ive been kicking around for the past week. and tonight, i went to the fabric store (yep.) and im ready to share my idea with you:-)
there are kabbalah bracelets, there are livestrong bracelets...there are even *slutty before you can even vote* sex bracelets! and yes, there are gay pride bracelets...this color and that color. rainbow..and charms...and leather and all that.
but what if we had one string that united us all AND let us identify each other, in a subtle way!
i give you...
the..."But I'm a Lesbian" string bracelet (not really calling it that. havent thought of a name. this will do for now)...
yes i spent a good hour in the store finding just the right yarn for my project. and as cheesy as it may sound, i think its really cool that the people who get this will somehow all be connected...we're wearing pieces of the same string....i dont know...it warms my heart a bit.

there's a cool chick in the UK named Leanne Hurley who writes a myspace blog and has a website called The Gay Girls Guide. she contacted me recently and really likes the idea of the purple string.
Leanne put together this packaging (shown above) and is making it available for purchase for those of you who arent able to get to a yarn store. just like me, shes not making any money off of these. shes just charging what it costs her to pack and send them out to you. this is AWESOME! especially since i was getting overwhelmed with orders.
click HERE to check out her myspace blog about it, and/or click HERE to go to the order page.

p.s. tell Leanne i sent ya!
