Sorry for the lack of posting, but the blogging by phone ain't easy so I ditched it entirely..
I guess I could recap what happened in Spain, but so much went on I can hardly remember any of it myself, save as a jumble of words that would remind folks of the blurb in your high school yearbook, gibberish that only the parties there would know about, inside baseball stuff, except this:
Next to the Sala Apolo in Barcelona was a cerveceria that had a beer tap at every table, where you poured your own beers.
YES, YOU POUR YOUR OWN BEERS!!!
This is how I felt by the end of the night
The taps are hooked up to a flow meter and the totals are posted on a TV screen so you can
drink your enemies under the table keep an eye on your own consumption. Before the gig I had maybe a liter, afterwards our table drank well north of 20 liters, probably closer to thirty. Now in America this may be a lawsuit waiting to happen, but I've talked a guy who's opening a bar in Mexico into taking a look at the technology. Jeebus, did I get banged up that night.
I was supposed to be with Marah recording at studio X, owned by the biggest little band in the world, but on the last day of my drive from AZ to NJ, I was informed that the session was scrubbed because the singer from the biggest little band in the world got sick and cancelled their tour.
Q: What does this have to do with the studio? Do the members of the biggest little band in the world live in their studio like some commune?
Q: The singer in the littlest band in the world "was battling an infection". To quote Derrick Coleman, Whoop-dee-god-damn-do!! I know the type of infection is a bitch, but nobody thought of seeing a doctor, getting antibiotics prescribed, irrigating the area in question? They were on tour for almost 2 weeks prior to their cancellation, yet made zero progress in alleviating the infection? Did Dr. Nick prescribe him placebos?
IMO, something is rotten in the state of Denmark. Either the story is true and the singer is the biggest whinger in music or the singer has bigger issues than an infection that caused the cancellation.
Anyways, the session at studio X would've been cool except for the fact that I still am refferring to it as studio x and will continue to do so out of courtesy to unnamed people. But the biggest little band in the world doesn't want any of their psycho fans to know where studio X is located, or what it looks like, inside or out. So no photos, no mention of the band, no mention of marah recording @ Band Y's studio x, no shipping of gear to studio x, etc. so on and so forth.
So we wound up going up to the Bielanko estate in the wilds of central PA, bringing my mic (that had spent 6 months getting serviced, yet wasn't done when I drove up to Nashville to pick it up) some mic pre's and my old pro tools rig along with Marah's gear to record in a little hunting cabin.
A cabin in the woods indeedMuch better than any church
Christine's gone country, the country of Afghanistan
Serge & Monica stopped in on their way out to Utah and hung out for a couple of days. Monica bought Dave a Buck Owens guitar that we used on every song so far, and it sounds great. Then again, almost anything sounds great going thru a c12 and a v72, especially if the material is aces. I guess this is for more of a folky record down the pike, might as well make lemonade when you get handed lemons. The local beer store(which is a 1/2 hour away) carries
Straub Beer, which is pretty good beer that is damn near impossible to find outside a 100 mile radius from the brewery.
The band found a place to
record in Williamsburg that has a great set up, great gear and a great tracking room at a pretty good price. So I'll fly back to PHX after the Carnegie Hall gig, see my girl, bust my ass and then come back up for the session.
In even better news, as proposal I submitted ages ago has finally gotten the green light for us to proceed forward. Thanks to my cousin Lydia I've accumulated a bunch of archival footage necessary for this to work, have a rough idea of what the budget will look like both for the shoot and clearances, now I just have to finish a rough draft of the script for Mr. X to approve/edit and quickly hash it into a shooting script. It'll be a little work here and there between now and the fall when we shoot the concert. If done right, this could be something that does a lot of things for a lot of people, all of it good.
