As salaamu alaikum

what up family.. in making the acquaintance of a lot of wonderful people across the world here on mypace, i am greeted by salutations of all kinds. there is one greeting in particular that stands out the most to this brooklyn native. it is one that holds a great deal of respect to the recipient. due to my cultural upbringing, aka the streets of BK, I at one time returned the greeting with a customary and a more simple response. although i knew the intent of the greeting, hearing it was always unsettling.

with every rise & setting sun that i am blessed to witness, it is becoming hard not to properly & respectfully address this salutation. for those that don't know, i am a Muslim (i know, you heard it all before). Muslims believe that there is only one God. we do not associate ANY partners with The Almighty. Doing so is a grave sin, one that The Creator says will NOT be forgiven. If you're uncertain on the Islamic viewpoint on the oneness of God I then ask you to reference the first commandment in the Torah.

Anyway when you greet me with "peace god", it cuts me to my core. I know it is not meant to be disrespectful, in fact I understand it as a form of respect. I also know of it's origin & having knowledge of self. However based on my belief it is a title that belongs to only one, and God I am not.

I'm human and I know that habits and customs are challenging to shake, cigarettes, cursing, immodest girls and the dreaded "N" word, OH MY!!!! be that "peace god" is habitual for some of us i'll just add it to the list. either way i'm wasting the precious air The True God has blessed me with if i don't speak on it, man... to me this issue is way more important than promoting the next piece of music i might put out. let's put out this knowledge yall..

This is said in love not hate so don't take it as a slight. Just know if I return the greeting with la ilaha illa Allah (there is no God, but God) that is my way of returning the greeting in addition to sidestepping the sin. Also I don't post comments that say peace god.

If you want to know more about Islam please pay a visit to your local Mosque. There are many warm brothers & sisters there who can answer your many questions. also there are many authentic websites out there filled with information. My favorite is www.islamicity.com

peace...

Very amazing blog that you've posted. I really respect your discussion of the almighty Allah. Even though you and I have different religion and backgrounds (As a Christian, I've went through many things in life. Like young females that want to have sex with me in high school, cursing, the N' word, "B" and "H" word, rebellionious. But, I always say grace and realize that I've been born again.).

You and I are in a very spiritual journey.

Thanks for sharing this story!

wa alaikum salaam wa rahmatullah. very thought-provoking blog akhi. i see exactly where you're coming from on this one. being from the south i don't have that problem. i just don't like being the recipient of the "what up pimp" greeting. however "peace god" carries a much heavier penalty. thanks for addressing the subject. ma'salama

Asalaamu alinkum ahk.

you know, I used to be of the 5% Nation, and that really brought about my reversion to Al-Islam quicker, and made it all the more sweet. I work with a brother who constantly greets me with that, and I make sure to give an extra "islamic" greeting all the time.

I still hold some teachings from the 5% Nation with me, because there is alot of Ilm in there, that one can really build off, but there is also plenty shirk-al'Akbar as well.

and this relates to the streets, just as much as it does to hip hop, we got alot of "fashion ahki" as I like to call them, running around. Kufi's and Keffiyeh's on. Putting alot of Islamic connotations in their songs just to give them a certain appeal to the "other crowd" and what have you. It's all good if you are genuinely interested, but using Islam as a way to get over, and see success ...

well thats another story for another day.

Well stated and your reward lies with your Rabb. May Allah azza wa jal grant you the highest station in Jennah for your intentions of calling people to Tauheed (The Oneness of Allah). AMIN

Interesting viewpoint. I have a friend that not only refers to himself as 'God' on his outgoing voicemail message, but defends that title by stating that "We were made in His image, so we are all God"... not "Gods", but "God". Well obviously, a person set in his ways won't waiver, so debating his 'arrogance' was useless. At one point, I felt I was the only one even willing to debate his statements, so this blog is enlightning (as usual), very well received, and well-written. Thanks for sharing!

Well done! You've taken a very positive approach to this issue along with addressing your feelings. By stating your understanding of why things are done shows how you have grown with in yourself and your belief. You are definitely on the right path in your journey. For those you have enlightened, have no reason to walk in darkness.

Stay strong.

salaamu alaykum wa rahmatu allah ta3ala wa barakatuh,

ahh yes.. the "Peace God" salutation. The NGE (Nation of the Gods and the Earths) or 5% use that salutation all the time.. and if they aren't NGE they have learned it from the NGE.. without even knowing it.. It seems that some but not all, become warm to muslims because of the associations of Islam within our Ummah (family) and the 5%'s ideology.. so how do you show your appreciation towards their good intentions, while knowing its contradicts your beliefs?

I think you approached it... the best way i've seen.. so it's appreciated that you took time out to post it.. for those whom experience the same as you experience..

The idea the 5% use that they are God comes through knowledge of Self... although it is not the same as what was meant when it was first introduced but it is very real..

It seems that mainstream Islam as taught in the US has really dumbed down the teachings of the Prophet Salla allahu alayhi wa salaam and his example as well as the sahabah.. There are no limits to learning in Islam..

Knowledge of Self (ilm an-nafs) in arabic is very real within Islam... except that the servant remains the servant and the master remain the master although they become one.. how do you ask? through the heart.. and the soul... 3 levels... islam iman and ihsan...

in Hadith al-Qudsi Allah subhana wa ta3ala had said..

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: Allah (mighty and sublime be He) said:

Whosoever shows enmity to someone devoted to Me, I shall be at war with him. My servant draws not near to Me with anything more loved by Me than the religious duties I have enjoined upon him, and My servant continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory works so that I shall love him. When I love him I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask [something] of Me, I would surely give it to him, and were he to ask Me for refuge, I would surely grant him it. I do not hesitate about anything as much as I hesitate about [seizing] the soul of My faithful servant: he hates death and I hate hurting him.

It was related by al-Bukhari.

mashallah. la illah il Allah. The highest state a human can reach is pure and complete submission to Allah the Exalted until all that exists is a purified mirror reflecting divine light. To ascribe divinity to oneself is to ballon the ego that one must overcome to reach a state of true submission. I pray that we may all find the path of submission and peace and shine that light into the darkness that grips this planet.

Respect! Thank you for the wisdom brother! I have been a guilty of this sin eventhou i've always spelled god with a small letter meaning man and not the almighty God Allah.
You are very right and i can only respect your wisdom! La illaha ila huwa! ( none has the right to be worshipped but he )

Yeah Ali...
Definately glad you posted this as its been something unsaid for years. Watching this saying "God" being incoporated into hip hop, like many other things said and behaviours followed, it truly can be destructive to the individual.

Although we understand it's said in positivity, no one can be compared to God.

In Toronto nuff brothers refer to each other as "Kings" and while keeping ourselves on a high and positive plateau, it steers clear of the Holy One's comparison.

Spread the word King,

Peace

Hello ali.

A friend is DJ Jays which had you approve it for you.

I force it to your rose to make hoarse in the morning and can watch an article, and I am honored, and Japan thinks in the morning now.

I was weak in English, but read your article by interpretation for me hard.

I felt splendor in your way of thinking and the durability consciousness.

I will hear your splendid story and thank you.

Thank you very much

DJ Jays

A postscript-- It is hard for me to express own feeling in English. Because I am because I am not so good at English. When I let you feel unpleasant with words trainers in my English, I'm sorry.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Like yourself, this is something that I have never been able nor attempted to reconcile. My friend (who uses this greeting) and I have had many an argument about its use. This is a beautiful blog that more people should read. Many people will learn from your response to this greeting and think about what they are truly saying. I have always found any greeting referencing ones self as His equivalent to be incredibly ignorant, a violation of true belief in The Creator and calling for a serious revision in faith.

Wow masha Allah,

You did a great job with this blog. May Allah truly reward you and accept your good deeds, Ameen! So many misconceptions that we are not able to defend because we do not possess a public voice. You possess a voice that people are willing to listen to. Whether it be through a song or otherwise. May Allah subhaanahu wa ta ala give you good and bless you in this life and in the hereafter...May He build for you a home in Jannah, Ameen!

shukran jazakaalh. You set a positive example for me as a youth. I wanted to be like you tip and phife when I was coming up. I wasnt a gangster or dope boy so you guys were who I related to musically. Its kind of funny but hip hop music in a strange way helped me stumble upon true Islam and al humdullilah I took shahaddah at 19. I feel bad for todays generation...they dont have a lot of people to listen to these days that steer them away from B.S. in the music game and teach them its cool to be themselves and be diverse. You were always your self uncompromised you were always Mr. Muhammad.....A salaam a laikum rahmatullah
