In press interviews for THE SEEKER: THE DARK IS RISING, Ian has been quoted as declaring DEADWOOD's demise. Sorry to say, it appears to be true. HBO had a five year lease on Melody Ranch. That lease is ending. The sets which have sat dormant, and around which JOHN FROM CINCINNATI was filmed, are being dismantled and leased props/costumes are being returned.

It is over. That beautiful chestnut stud-horse has died, I will now stop beating it.

I once swore to live my life without regrets. I did not want to come to the end, look back at what had ensued and feel sorrow for things I didn't do nor complete. Well... when I reach that Autumn, I will have now have at least one regret. However, I salve myself with the knowledge that I did everything I knew to do in order to keep it going. I was never quiet sure if I was Don Quixote attacking that windmill or Sisyphus rolling that rock - never the less I tried, but to no avail.

I will now roll and cinch my whip, retrieve my saddle, and limp off down the trail into the waiting sunset.

For those of you who cared enough to pay attention, thank you. Maybe, someday, I will again be a part of something that plays at that level and is that good.

Speaking of - do any of you watch FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS on NBC? I just got turned on to the show via the boxset of season 1 -- it is awesome. I highly recommend it.

I am so very sad that Deadwood is gone. I got turned onto it just this summer and watched episode after episode until I finished all 3 seasons in about a month. I know, what does that say about my personal life?! But I have never seen a show as well done as Deadwood. The acting was out of this world, the scripts...unbelievable, and don't even get me started on the rest.

The television-watching world is missing what I believe to be THE BEST show of all time (that is not even the least bit exaggerated). Once I found out that Deadwood was not coming back for another season, I almost wondered why I even started watching it. But you know what.....I am so grateful that I did. I'd rather it be short-lived, than never to have lived at all.

Thank you to all of those who made Deadwood possible. It is at the very top of my "all time favorites" list, and will have to live on in my dvd player.

Good bye Deadwood. I will miss you terribly.

Deadwood got me through my Dad's death. Does that sound f'ed up? True nonetheless: my bros and I watched it start to finish, while dealing with the ugliness and sadness of disposing of him, and his possessions. Its bitterness, humor, and ultimately its hopefulness in the midst of a world of shit were exactly the medicine I needed, and as a result the show will stand as one of the more lasting influences of my life, I think.

I am sad that it's over. But I just ordered all three seasons from Amazon, so at least I'll be able to hang onto it until I wear out the laser grooves, or whatever the hell DVDs are made of.

Heartfelt hanks for being a part of what kept me sane through a messed up time...

xox and here's hoping another project ALMOST as good comes along for you soon.

Dan was not fictional.

Dan Dority left Al Swearingen's employee and took over ownership of the Bella Union (Cy Tolliver IS fictional). Dority came and went from Deadwood numerous times over the years, but became a successful businessman in his own right. At the time of his death, he owned four Deadwood establishments in partnership with others and a brewery in Cheyenne which imported all of DW's beer.

Dority was also married with children. He brought his brood out to live with him, but they didn't last long. His wife did not like the dangerous, filthy conditions and went back east with the children.

Dan Dority was murdered by Pat Casey in Deadwood in March, 1888. Casey, a fellow saloon owner, got into an argument with Dority and pulled a gun. Dority was unarmed. Casey shot him three times. Dan made his way into the street, headed back toward the Bella Union, when he collapsed and died in the muck of the thoroughfare.

His body was shipped back east at the behest of his widow. So, unlike many of the other characters from history we portrayed, Dan is not buried in Deadwood soil.

I wont, I can't believe it, a set is a set, it can be rebuilt.

Tell them to look into Old Tucson down here in Arizona, they could get it for a song.

The light might be a little different but the aesthetic of a two hour movie should be. In fact, if HBO is dropping the ball, then to hell with them, think bigger. If they arent doing anything with it, maybe they will sell to someone who will?

Go to one of the major's, why not Deadwood on 2500 screens nationwide, it would be the first transistion of an HBO series to the big screen that I know of and has a pre-established audience. Sounds like a producers wet dream to me...

Why not?

We only fail when we give up...
and isn't this the one worth fighting for?

I love Friday Night Lights, but it's one of those shows that seems to have to fight for renewal and that makes me sad.

I have no faith in the international community of "Network Exec" and/or "Show Programmer" for the overall quality of television programming is so inept, while quality shows seem few and far between. Even then, those that are really great seem to teeter on cancellation every year. Studio 60 was one of the same victims of this fate. And whoevers idea it was to do the mid-season hiatus oughta be drawn and quartered.

Anyway... I'm sad and disappointed in the loss of Deadwood, but am glad to see FNL back on the air. I'll be glad to dive into the next season. Keep up the good work Earl-- I caught you on Psychic awhile back and I'll keep my eye open for you all the other fantastic artists ala Deadwood in whatever ventures you will have to come.

Sad, sad day. So much for my plan of having a contingent of female fans whore themselves out and donate the proceeds to the Deadwood production office so as to rekindle the show...

In all seriousness, at least the whole cast can know that never was there a bad episode of the show (which VERY few series these days can boast) and it is better to have a little of something that is absolutely fantastic than a lot of something mediocre.

Thanks for your efforts and updates!

Those COCK-SUCKERS at HBO are gonna 'ave HELL to PAY once all the DEADWOOD fans get wind of the non-Existing FOURTH SEASON of DEADWOOD. I am truly disappointed. Me not having HBO for sometime due to extraordinary principals, I have been fortunate enough to watch the box set in succession. It's a sad day when semantics and politics start a fire. The Powers That Be don't know or care about good and bad.. They only care about money. It's ironic that a show so steeped in the message of importance of community would see it's "community" sucked out from under it. There have been FAR worse shows given closure. It is sad, my friend. In defense of those people, they are the ones who developed the show to begin with. While Milch made it what it was, they are the ones who brought on Milch. Were it not for Caroline Strauss, Mike Garcia, Chris Albrecht, and others, we never would have had the show to begin with. Plus, they were immensely supportive. It is unheard for a show to run over schedule like we did and not have a Suit intervene. Caroline never did because she knew what she had on her hands - a show like no other, a show for the ages.

It was Chris' decision. He was faced with a corporate mandate to cut production costs. The amount of money they spent on our show was astronomical. In our defense, you could see it onscreen. Our show looked like a big budget movie. However, money is money. Hence the axe fell on us, then it fell on ROME.

Only their current balance sheets tell the truth as to whether it a smart decision or not. Their content is known only to HBO's inner-sanctum.

As for holding on to the set, the lease was up. The absolute earliest we could possibly shoot anything was June 08. The entire industry is quivering in its boots because both the Writer's Guild and the Screen Actors Guild are saber rattling for strikes to begin when contracts are up in June 08. So... you're looking at paying a year's worth of rent on property that you won't use. Hence, the teardown.

Saddens me as a fan. Saddens me as an artist. However, "tis better to have loved and lost than not loved at all" -- William Shakespeare... or was that David Milch?

A show for the ages? Close Earl, if the fourth season had gone ahead it definately would have been, unfortunately now it is and always will be, an untold story. It may well have been an extremely expensive program, but as you say Earl, it showed, you could see every cent on the screen! I think HBO would have been surprised at how well rewarded they would have been with a fourth season.

To see the elephant - "This phrase entered the American glossary in the mid-1830s but became particularly associated with the California gold rush. It originated with the tale of the western farmer who hitches his team and drives to town to see the circus and on the way encounters the parade of exotic animals led by the elephant. The farmer's terrified horses buck, pitch, and overturn the wagon. How was the show? asks the man's wife on his return. 'Didn't get to the circus,' he replies with a crooked smile, 'but I've seen the elephant!'" (The American West - An Interpretive History by Robert Hine and John Mack Faragher, 261).

I got an email today, in regards a previous posting I made, thought I would share:

Hi Salvatore,

I'm french and I read today on the myspace of W. Earl Brown that you write that HBO will can save Deadwood if they change the place of the set.

So, I ask you : Is there any chance for HBO to think about that ?

Thank you for answering me, please.

I wish you a nice day.

Lilly

My response:

I sure hope so Lilly,

I have been to Melody Ranch and the Deadwood set, it’s not that big of a place or that difficult to re-create if the will and the money exist to make it happen.

And to answer your question, yes there is a studio in Tucson, Arizona called Old Tucson and it is currently changing hands, has been down on its luck for years and really needs the boost that a production like Deadwood could bring it.

My offering to Earl and my hope that David Milch might be reading, is that they should think in a different, larger context. David is a genius, his Opus: "Deadwood" and the rightful place for it to end is on the big screen.

It is, and I truly believe this, the best venue for Mr. Milch's style of writing, it fits him to a "T" more than that, it gives back to him twice what he puts into it...that's rare, really rare.

So many movies get made in Hollywood on untried and many times unsuccessful attempts at material. Here, we have a situation that any studio/producer would dream of, a built in audience and a tried and true cast/screenwriter/director.

Mr. Milch of course would have to be on board and from what Earl mentioned, he isn't at this point. I get it, he wants a break and bad blood exists between him and Ian McShane. That would have to be cleared up. It can. It should, it must…

“The only sin is shallowness” –O.W.

My wish is for a good producer, with the right connections, to negotiate private funding/locations and a third of the production costs (a worthy project to undertake during a looming strike?). Convince the actors to sign letters of intent. Secure distribution and one third of the funding through Warner Brothers (Time Warner, they own HBO) and partner with a third studio to defray costs and infuse some fresh energy into a stale situation.

I can only hope as I see that others do, that whatever personal, transient and in the final reckoning, unimportant issues that exist between those individuals for whom this magnificent work of art named DEADWOOD has paused can see through the eyes of themselves in their final moments looking back and wondering what might have been, then *snap* wake to realize a new day has dawned where Posterity still waits with pen in hand...

And she likes a good ending :)

I do know. It was never about money. For Ian. For David. For any of us. The show was so expensive because it was massive in scope and because, the way David works, it is impossible to stick to a shooting schedule.

Also, there is no feud between Ian and David. There were hurt feelings and misunderstandings, yes, but no feud. Now, everyone is on the same page about what happened. At least it ends without bruised egos. It wasn't David's fault nor Ian's. It was a decision made by the network head (who is no longer at the helm) who felt, at the time, like he had to take drastic measures to cut costs.

There is no way to "take it elsewhere." The intellecutal property rights are owned by HBO. David tried to find outside funding to underwrite the show, but it was too late.

I totally agree with you Al. We must keep the pressure on HBO because I think that it is our last chance to save Deadwood. If all of us take part in the action you explain in your previous post, well, it can work and maybe it will save Deadwood but all the fans must take part in that. I repeat, we must keep the pressure on HBO because we lose nothing if we do that.

About Showtime, I want to know if it would be possible cos if it would be possible, so Deadwood will save. It is a very good question. Someone have an idea about that. Maybe, we will ask that to Showtime or someone else can do that.

If you take the full-page Variety, I will taking part in that.

It doesn't appear as if David has entirely thrown in the towel. I'm sure he'd much prefer seeing the show end on his own terms. So... maybe, somewhere, sometime, it'll be rebuilt.

That time is nowhere in the near future.

Everything I've done in the past year and half, has been done with my eye on DW's return. I weighed every opportunity against how it might affect my returning to those muddy streets.

Not anymore. I can't. Whatever happens, happens. IF DW returns and I can be a part of it, I will. But I can no longer arrange the rest of my life around the slight possibility of its return. Hence, my whip/saddle/sunset metaphor.

I lament the untimely death of Deadwood and sadly second all of your emotions. I remember feeling bummed after the series finales of the West Wing, Six Feet Under, Buffy/Angel but these shows had longer runs and it was easier to swallow their ends…Deadwood’s lifespan was too short indeed. And like these shows (in my opinion), Deadwood became that rare pioneer of programming…the one of a TV kind that seems to blur the line between lasting literature and novel film and almost creates its own genre. Something you realize when you are trying to convince someone to check it out...you can’t really compare it to anything else and some people just shrug, “I’m not really into Westerns” (or politics, funerals, slayers, spells and vampires with souls as it were) and you just have to say, “this show is amazing, you have no idea, trust me, you’ll love it”. Although, it’s not for everyone, my mother would think she was in hell and would not get it :)

And like all the shows I’ve loved before, the writing/acting is absolutely brilliant (and rich with delicious culture detail/historical Americana) and the characters make us look at ourselves a little harder (or lighter) by ever bothering or stimulating our sensibilities while at the same time capturing what drives our common instincts, conflicts, compassion and, of course- the hallmark of Deadwood-our need for community.

Long live the camp in our hearts and minds (and DVD players). We can only hope, as television producers consider their next best investment, that they hear and heed our grief and praise of the beloved Deadwood and continue funding and supporting such unique and compelling programs.
